2022-23 ANNUAL I M PAC T REPORT

FROM THE HEAD Dear St. Andrew’s Families, St. Andrew’s was founded with love, a desire to create servant leaders in the world, and a mission to fulfill the potential of every student. Our core values of community, spiritual foundation, high expectations, caring, celebration and humor have buoyed us since 1952 and will continue to pave the path forward to excellence. At the heart of any great school is the faculty. The importance of that sacred relationship between a student and teacher cannot be overstated. Our St. Andrew’s faculty inspire curiosity, encourage deep thinking and reasoning, emphasize good character development, and remain consistently devoted to our students’ success across all four pillars. Time and time again our alumni remember our teachers…what they learned from them, how they felt as students, and ways in which our teachers went above and beyond to love them and prepare them. We prepare our students for success not only in college, but well beyond. Taking care of our students begins with hiring, retaining, and taking excellent care of our teachers. Along with our vision for expanding our campus and growing our programming and student body, we are raising endowment funds to support teacher compensation and benefits as well as student financial aid. We must make certain we are taking care of the most important reason we exist, people, in lasting and sustainable ways. This is accomplished through raising endowment funding to assure support for both students and faculty in perpetual, sustainable ways. This is a pivotal moment in the life of our school. We’ve had many, many milestones in our 71-year history. What began as a small West Austin 1st-6th grade primary school has grown into a vibrant K-12 Episcopal School with amazing potential ahead. We know there is more to be done, and we have tremendous faith in this community to realize our vision.

The next five years at St. Andrew’s, as we build, with your help and support, our new Athletics Complex and Student Union, our new Middle School on Southwest Parkway, and our new Lower School Complex, will change the trajectory of our school forever. These plans were thoughtfully curated, with our students as the central focus, and will enhance each of our four pillars - Scholar, Artist, Athlete, Servant - in unimaginable and measurable ways for all students, K-12, for generations to come. Our future is bright! We have good work to do. I remain very grateful to this community, and generations of families before you, for creating the spaces and opportunities for St. Andrew’s to ready our beloved students to go out into the world to lead purposeful lives that contribute to making the world a better place for all. Our graduates are prepared; they are thoughtful, kind people who think openly and critically, and they are doers. They fill me with optimism for the future. May God continue to bless all in our St. Andrew’s Episcopal School community. Faithfully,

Melissa Grubb Head of School

A L I F E LO N G C O M M U N I T Y I am a lifer here at St. Andrew’s. This school has been my second home, full of people I consider family, for the past twelve years. St. Andrew’s has made me the very best version of myself, and I know I would not be who I am today without this place and, especially, this community. So, the question, “What does St. Andrew’s mean to you?” makes me pretty emotional. It is hard to find a school that constantly promotes all walks of life and St. Andrew’s accomplishes that through the four pillars: scholar, artist, athlete, and servant. I have been able to try so many different things because I was lucky enough to have opportunities presented to me over and over again. I got to participate in Technical Theater, while also being a two-sport athlete for four years at the high school. I served our community as a Bridge Advisor and a Peer Mentor. On top of all of that, I had a lot of fun through clubs. For example, I learned how to ride a unicycle when I was in second grade. St. Andrew’s has pushed and challenged me as a student and while I love the academics, the clubs, the arts, and the sports, what makes this school so great is the community. Growing up surrounded by such amazing teachers and coaches who pushed me and always believed in me was a completely invaluable experience. I can think of so many people in this community who have made an impact on me, but the first person that comes to mind is Coach Kristen Benjamin. As an incoming eighth grader, I had only ever had three basketball coaches, and one of them was my father, so I was pretty apprehensive when I heard that I would have a brand new coach for my last year of middle school basketball. Leading up to the first practice, I constantly questioned if she would like me, if she was going to be a good coach, and if she was going to be fun. After that very first

practice, I knew that she was going to have a huge impact on me as an athlete. When the news broke that she was going to be the varsity coach at the high school, I was ecstatic. Five whole years with my role model. The notion that I had after that first practice was partially correct. Coach Benjamin had a huge impact on me as an athlete, but she has also made me the best possible version of myself off the court. She taught me how to be selfless, how to be positive even while facing adversity, and most importantly, she taught me what it really means to be a part of a team. The best part about St. Andrew’s is that there is a Coach Benjamin for everyone on campus. I can say this confidently because that is just the kind of community we are. I know that even when I graduate and say goodbye to being a student here after all these years, I will always have this community to fall back on, as will every student that goes through St. Andrew’s. GROWING IN STRIDES We caught up with sisters Claire '34 and Ella '34 Tate and their parents Lauren and Drew to talk about their first year at St. Andrew's. Lauren and Drew, What's your favorite part about the Lower School? Our favorite part of the St. Andrew's Lower School is the supportive community of teachers and parents. This was our first year at SAS and what we were immediately so impressed by is that Ella and Claire’s teachers had a genuine care and interest in who they are, not just as students, but as individuals. After our first parent-teacher meeting, it was very clear that each of their teachers knew their unique strengths, areas of growth, and just overall personalities and temperaments. Beyond that, we have truly felt as if their teachers and the staff at SAS care about Ella and Claire and want them to be successful. Another thing we love, and one of the main reasons we chose St. Andrew’s, is that we feel that SAS nurtures the whole child - academically, spiritually, socialemotionally, creatively, etc. To have a school where creativity and the arts are just as valued as academics has been so great for our daughters. Claire and Ella, what's the part of the day you most look forward to when you go to school? Claire: Seeing my teacher when I first walk in the classroom and seeing my friends. Ella: And when I see Ms. McCoy (Claire: Same, same!) because she makes me really happy. Because I always come in and she has a smile on her face. Claire: Yeah, she's always very nice. Ella: She's just really kind. Lauren and Drew, how have you seen Claire and Ella grow during their time at St. Andrew’s? Ella and Claire have grown immensely this year at St. Andrew’s, most notably in academics. We came into this school year after a year of kindergarten where we continuously heard “they’re behind, they’re behind, they’re behind”

without much regard for their strengths, or feedback in regards as to how we could be better supporting them. From the start of their year, Ms. Torres and Ms. Van Rooyen have been incredibly proactive in identifying what it was that Ella and Claire needed, as far as literacy support went, and got them into a group with Ms. McCoy. From there, we saw them grow and thrive, and even better than that, they were happy to be in a group where they felt supported without the energy of “being behind” or “needing to catch up”. This had a domino effect in other areas, where they began to feel confident in themselves academically, which has been such a gift! Claire and Ella, how do you feel when you come to school in the morning? Claire: The first day of school, I felt kind of nervous to come in, but now it feels like I'm ready to go to school. Ella: I feel really happy, but sometimes kind of sleepy. I come into school with a smile and ask what we're doing today. When I come in, I like to do my reading because it's really cool how you can just learn to read the words as you go along. It's really interesting. How have you seen Claire and Ella be supported by faculty? This has been huge this year, and we cannot express our gratitude for the support we have felt this year. Ms. Van Rooyen, Ms. Torres, and Ms. McCoy have been huge supports to our entire family this first grade year. It truly has felt like a collaborative effort between us and their teachers to get them the support that they needed in order to thrive this year. From the getgo, Ella and Claire’s teachers identified a need for extra support in reading, and set Ella and Claire up to meet with Ms. McCoy for literacy rooms. And when we all sat down to meet in January, all three supported us in seeking out testing for dyslexia, down to providing resources and contacts. And when we got their official

dyslexia diagnoses weeks later, they were supportive in setting up a temporary solution so that they could get support immediately and finish out their first grade year with Academic Language Therapy. We truly feel as though we have a collaborative support team who all share the same interest - to see Ella and Claire thrive and grow academically, while also nurturing and supporting their strengths. Ella and Claire, Tell me about your teachers. Ella: My teacher Ms. Torres is really nice and whenever I come in the room, she always has a smile on her face, and she says good morning to me. And whenever I'm scared of a word, she helps me which makes me happy because she's really nice to me. Whenever I feel sad, she gives

me a hug, and she's super duper adventurous, and really caring. I had another teacher, Ms. McCoy, and she is super nice when I come in. She always teaches me about vowels and consonants, and glued sounds and tricky word parts. And she's so nice, I just love her so much. Claire: My teacher helps me, like sometimes I don't know what to do, but she helps me and always knows what to do. She's such a nice teacher. She's also very caring, and she also has a son, and I think that's just great. My teacher is really nice, she's really good. I also have another teacher, Ms. McCoy. She taught us to write our names in cursive, and how to make letters in cursive.

CALLING IN THANKS Hi, I’m Jack Dial, an 8th grader here at St Andrew’s, and the student body president of the Middle School. Ever since I came to St Andrew’s in first grade, I have always been surrounded by amazing people in the St. Andrew’s community. I have met so many friends that I will continue to be friends with for the rest of my life, and so many teachers who have not only taught me their subject to the best of their ability, but life lessons that are fundamental for middle school, high school, and beyond. Along with that, I have had so many coaches who have impacted my life in so many different ways, by making me better athletically and also a better person. These teachers, coaches, and members of the St. Andrew’s community have taught me discipline and perseverance, and have welcomed me into their community. It is for these reasons that I

feel obligated to give back to my community every chance I get. Each year, there are a multitude of donors who make a contribution to the St. Andrew’s Fund. This helps sustain the best possible environment for me and my peers. I am forever grateful for these donors contributing to the community and enhancing the experience of students and teachers alike at St. Andrew’s. Therefore, every year when given the opportunity, I sign up to call and thank these generous donors for their contribution to the school. I hope I will get to talk to you during this year’s calls! WE CAN DO MIRACLES Twenty-nine years ago, my wife, Melissa, and I first set foot on St. Andrew’s 31st Street campus. It was a small school in size, but large in its vision for the future. The minute we met Head of School Lucy Nazro and the dedicated faculty and staff, we realized the huge impact this little school had on its students and their families! Melissa, a former elementary and special ed school teacher, instantly knew that St. Andrew’s was a special place and that we should be a part of it. Thus, after anxious weeks of waiting for the acceptance letter, our sons (Trey '06 and Alec '10) became “lifers.” We are blessed that the lessons learned at St. Andrew’s carry on with them, even today.

what was needed. I was honored and humbled to be asked to serve on the Board of Trustees. Over my twelve-year tenure, I served as Chair of two Expansion Committees, Vice-Chair and ultimately Chair of the Board. During this time, the 31st St. campus gained a Middle School, a new Gymnasium, a Library, and a new Chapel. The Southwest Parkway campus saw new classroom construction, athletic field improvements, the rise of a new Performing Arts Center and the acquisition of 98 acres of land. All of this was made possible by generous donations from countless parents, alumni, teachers, administrators, and friends of the school.

Once we joined the St. Andrew’s community, it became our extended family and a very important part of our lives. The boys thrived in an environment that nurtured its students’ mind, body, and spirit. Melissa and I attended countless chapel services, sporting events, concerts and plays along the way. We were continually amazed at the passion the faculty and staff had for ensuring that our boys experienced the gifts of “scholar, artist, athlete and servant.”

As St. Andrew’s continues to look to its future, I am honored to again be asked to serve on the Board of Trustees. I look forward to meeting and working with what I consider, “new” members of our St. Andrew’s family.

We decided long ago to give back to this Community that had taken us in. We volunteered our time and contributed to the Annual Fund, Capital Campaigns and Financial Aid. There was never a question of would we serve, but of

And as Lucy Nazro kept telling me, “Together We Can Do Miracles!” Silver Garza St. Andrew’s Board of Trustees Parent of Trey '06 and Alec '10

Sebastian and friends

COMMUNITY TIES I am now concluding my first year at St. Andrew's as a freshman. I have found it is easy to assimilate to the likable community St. Andrew's has formed. As someone who went to a similar school to St Andrew's for middle and lower school, I have grown fond of having such a close-knit community. I have taken many after school activities and clubs that allow me to connect with this wonderful community. For example, soccer helped me get introduced to a couple of sophomores that I still talk to this day. Further, the school organizes community events across the grade levels, making the grades feel more connected. Another thing that's helped me is having an older brother, who is currently a sophomore. He has introduced me to plenty of his friends and teachers. The teachers at St. Andrew's are all driven and caring individuals. As previously mentioned, many know me, but don’t teach me yet—they still say 'hi' and greet me with a smile. In the classroom, my teachers are hardworking, ensuring that the students learn. Many give up their free time to meet with you regarding a difficulty you are having. I don’t have a particular favorite teacher, but rather have several for whom I am grateful. For example, Ms. Tran who is my History 9 teacher. Due to her having a teenage boy, she finds ways to connect with us all in a very positive way that makes the class feel fun. Another teacher I need to mention is Mrs. Hendrickse. She is my

Algebra 2 teacher and her passion for the class can be seen in many lessons. Teachers have become a fundamental part of my life at St. Andrew's, as they are the ones who guide and shape us into how we act as adults. Student life at St. Andrew's is another unique feature that I have enjoyed so far. The free blocks allow you to get work done or meet with your teachers. This encourages students to do after-school activities and have more free time at home. I also enjoy the variety of clubs and classes offered. It really allows students to pursue or explore subjects of their interest. I plan to do this next year by doubling up in math and taking an aerospace engineering course offered during my free time. I have come a long way since I began my St. Andrew's journey, and I look forward to what's to come. Sebastian Moreno Class of 2026

GUIDING LIGHTS As I sit to write about my experiences at St. Andrew’s, names are what first come to mind. Chris McCoy, Susan Kemner Reed, Veronica Putney, Nathan Michaud, Hur Shiu Webb, and Malia LaMond were all, and some still, members of faculty I had the pleasure of interacting with during my time at St. Andrew’s. In high school, I felt like all of these people were not just teachers, but guideposts. I was encouraged to make decisions, take chances, and learn about myself without realizing how valuable that was until leaving. Depending on where you choose to further your education, you may not get those valuable interactions with faculty. These advisory relationships are unparalleled on the road to adulthood. For me, St. Andrew’s was a place

filled with people who cared, people who wanted the best for you, and perhaps most importantly, would also let you fail. To fail is to learn, and they knew that fact. As an alum, I’ve had the pleasure of coming back as an artist mentor working with high school students. It is inspiring to take part in this process as well as to realize that I was once in their shoes; watching them learn and being a guide for them, just as the staff of St. Andrew’s was for me. Early in the 2023 fall semester, we lost two beloved members of our St. Andrew's Community: former Head of School Lucy C. Nazro and SAS parent Chris Sanders. Many generous members of our community reached out to make donations in their memories, and we will be featuring the impact of that philanthropy in our 2023-24 annual report.
