WHAT you HELP MAKE HAPPEN
St. Andrew’s is a place where students are encouraged to explore and grow. They feel like a valued member of our community because of the supportive environment that surrounds them.
One place where this support is most emphasized is in athletics. Unlike students at other schools, St. Andrew’s students aren’t forced to specialize, giving them all the more opportunity to succeed.
One student who has succeeded immensely in athletics is Elle Garcia ‘22. A lifer at St. Andrew’s, Elle cites athletics as one of the most integral parts of her experience here.
Elle has been captain of the cross country and track teams for the past two years, and has served on the Athletic Council all four years at the Upper School. This February, she signed her letter of intent to run track at Rice University.
But Elle says the most remarkable part of her sports career hasn’t been her accomplishments on the track, but the relationships she’s developed with her teammates and coaches.
“Some of my closest friends have been my teammates throughout the years. You have to trust that your best friends are always going to be there to support you at the end of the run, no matter how it goes, because we love each other, and that’s genuinely true,” says Elle.
Donor support like yours ensures that St. Andrew’s has the resources to give students like Elle opportunities to succeed in athletics. This success can lead to direct achievements, like Elle’s college career in sports, but it also gives students confidence, teaches leadership skills, and strengthens our community.

STUDENTS reflect ON SERVICE
Two families from Afghanistan moved near Luke (8th) and Cole (7th) Willis this winter and the boys and their family ran a successful drive in the middle school for materials for them. Here are their reflections:
Cole: “Over 4 weeks, we helped two refugee families by: starting a drive for clothing and supplies, gathering and sorting the donations, delivering supplies, playing with the kids, writing an article for our neighborhood newsletter, and communicating with school about the drive in chapel and emails.”
Luke: “We helped two refugee families who moved into our neighborhood by playing with the kids, organizing a clothing and food drive and telling people at school about it, writing about it for our neighborhood newsletter, delivering toys and clothes over several weeks. I feel like me and my family helped in a very big way. these families had nothing and they needed help. I really hope that we made their lives a little bit easier.”
We want to thank the Middle School students and faculty for your donations to our clothing and toy drive for the Saide and Mohammadi families, refugees from Afghanistan living in our neighborhood. Thanks to you, all 17 children (and the 18th arriving any day) have at least one pair of shoes, warm jackets, several changes of clothes, toys, books and school supplies. They also each have a backpack, which arrived just in time for them to finally start school this week.
The kids are all really polite and cute and fun. We’ve enjoyed getting to know them and being able to help them out. Thanks again to all of you for making this possible.

Several years ago, our amazing K/1 art teacher at the time, Bri Berkowitz, led the students in an MLK/DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) reflection project titled Everyone Deserves.
The students were tasked with thinking of a basic human right that they believe everyone deserves but not everyone in the world currently has. The First Grade team loved the project so much that they kept it even after Bri moved on from teaching art.
Here are a few examples from this year’s Everyone Deserves.
