Servant NEWS Revisiting Burun di Two years later, the St. Andrew’s Water Well is built and flowing thousands of miles away in Africa
In 2008, the St. Andrew’s community became intimately aware of the water needs of the tribal communities in the tiny central African country of Burundi through SAS parent and coach Gilbert Tuhabonye, a native of Burundi. We learned that most people in this country spend 40 percent of each day walking an average of six miles to collect water from rivers and creeks (that they also share with farm animals), that they use for bathing, washing, and drinking. Thanks to the amazing $50,000 school-wide fundrais-

“The villagers often say that angels came to them,” said Tuhabonye. “They could never dream of getting any assistance for this from the government. But people from America—St. Andrew’s families—came together and helped bring their water—clean water—close to home. Now the villagers can work. Now their children can attend school. Now they won’t have to suffer due to an inadequate and unhealthy water supply.” During the 2008–09 school year, St. Andrew’s students participated in a year-long, student-driven, schoolwide community service project to support the Gazelle Foundation’s efforts to bring desperately needed clean water to Burundi. The Austin-based Gazelle Foundation, of which Tuhabonye is a founder, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit established in 2006 that implements charitable efforts to improve life for people in Burundi and offers assistance to children

Harvest Bowl
Servant news
Once again the St. Andrew’s community provided an extraordinary contribution to El Buen Samaritano’s food pantry through the Harvest Bowl competition with St. Stephen’s. For the seventh year in a row, St. Andrew’s won the Harvest Bowl, bringing in 19,904 items of the grand total of 25,904 collected from both schools. St. Andrew’s 4th, 10th, and 11th graders brought beans; 9th and 12th graders brought rice; 5th and 8th graders brought canned soups and canned vegetables; 1st, 2nd, and 7th graders brought cereal; and 3rd and 6th graders brought oatmeal and applesauce. The real winners, of course, are the more than 1,000 people who receive this food from El Buen Samaritano, an Episcopal mission in south Austin for the Hispanic working poor. Executive Director Victor Azio said that our donations will feed El Buen’s clients for an entire year. Last year, we learned that some people who came to the food pantry received even more than they needed for their own families so they were able to invite guests to share their dinner; for at least one family, it was the first time they had ever been able to do so. Our contributions have thus not only given people food in their stomachs, but dignity in their lives. All of this has happened because seven years ago, while working at El Buen for the summer, Upper School student Sara Taube noticed that the food pantry was completely bare. It was Sara’s idea to have a food drive competition with St. Stephen’s to fill the pantry, and the rest is history. The success of the Harvest Bowl competition is proof that one person can indeed make a difference in this world. Thanks to everyone who contributed toward continuing Sara’s vision and to Chris Martin, SAS director of community service, for coordinating the successful drive.

And in creating a habitat for butterflies, we also create new habitat for other small invertebrates and a variety of reptiles and birds. This year we are hoping to add a shallow-water feature, and will be applying for certification as a schoolyard wildlife habitat and a Monarch Waystation.” At the Middle School, students supplement classroom work with class trips to the Big Bend National Park and to a marine biology facility in Key Largo, Florida. The trips, which combine fun and learning, can have far-reaching effects, as one current sophomore at the Upper School attests: “I still remember my fantastic Middle School experience. The eighth grade trip to Big Bend was a blast, and the seventh grade trip to Key Largo was inspiring—in fact, I hope to continue learning about underwater ecology on my Junior Experience [in the Galapagos Islands].” This year, St. Andrew’s has teamed up with Ecology Project International to offer an experience like no other. Students will be able to conduct biodiversity and juvenile Galapagos tortoise monitoring

Four Seniors Honored as National Merit Semi-finalists; 14 named Commended scholars The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) — a test given in October, which serves as an initial screen of over 1.5 million entrants each year — and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements. Semi-finalists named in each year’s Merit Scholarship competition show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The 16,000 semifinalists selected this year from over 22,000 high schools are the highest scoring entrants in each state and represent less than 1 percent of each state’s high school seniors. St. Andrew’s is pleased to announce that James DelVesco, Meredith Stark, Katherine Van Leeuwen, and Colin Vanderburg were named National Merit Semi-finalists, and will continue in the candidate field for National Merit Scholars to be awarded in the Spring of 2011. In addition, 14 St. Andrew’s seniors were named Commended Scholars. These Commended students placed among the top three percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2011 competition by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Congratulations to Stephen Barron, Rachel Bishop, Travis Bishop, Bryant Bowyer, Caroline Crichlow-Ball, Colin Feo, Ryan Greenwell, Charles Hoff, Nathaniel Holland, Justin Ingram, Virginia McBride, Rita Ostrander, Austin Tedesco, and Sebastian Villarreal-Levy. They represent some of the most academically talented students in the country, as is demonstrated by their outstanding performance in the highly competitive program.
Three excel as National hispanic scholars In 1983 the National Hispanic Recognition Program was created to identify outstanding Hispanic/Latino students. This year the program is recognizing 5,000 of the 200,000 qualified students who took the PSAT examination in 2009. This represents the top 2.5 percent of all Hispanic/Latino students who completed the National Test. St. Andrew’s is proud to recognize Christina Stull, Sebastian Villarreal-Levy, and Parker Rivera.

West Side Story Runs for Three Sold Out Shows
Cast and Crew:
When tryouts for the fall 2010 musical began last May at the Upper School, it was hard to imagine topping 2009’s Les Misérables performance. But, flush with success, the directors and cast looked forward to their next challenge: Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s West Side Story. “When [music director] Warren Dickson and I were discussing musical titles, I naively thought, ‘What can be harder than Les Misérables?’” said drama director Rick Garcia. “I got my answer — West Side Story! It’s a shame audiences don’t see the rigor our performers have displayed in preparing for the physical demands of this musical. Bruises, sore muscles, dehydration, and pain accompanied song and character to build this show. I am impressed with our students’ commitment and desire to succeed.” For many cast members, this was their first experience with dance. They were indoctrinated and guided by professional choreographer Natasha Davison, a St. Andrew’s parent who teaches and choreographs in the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Texas. She kept as close to the original Jerome Robbins choreography as possible. Leading roles were played by Peter Steinbach (Tony), Allie Zodin (Maria), Conor Keelan (Riff), Caroline Crichlow-Ball (Anita), and Parker Rivera (Bernardo). Faculty members John Pomeroy, Doug Booth, Rich Mischinski, and Rob Leacock also made appearances in the show, adding a professional and comical element that delighted the audience. All three shows sold out. Special thanks to alumnus Taylor Smith ’07, a graphic design student at the University of Tulsa, for designing the large banners that hung behind the stage, as well as the posters, programs, and t-shirts for the show.

sixth graders charm audiences with
Christmas Classics In December, the sixth grade performed two shows to ring in the holiday season. The first was a beautiful all-girl production of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in the outdoor amphitheater with the sixth grade percussion classes, led by Darrel Mayers, providing wonderful accompaniment. An all-girl cast might have had the Bard of Avon spinning in his grave, but they did a great job working with the poetic language and playing characters from jesters to royalty to drunkards. The second performance was the quirky play The Best Christmas Pageant Ever which was held in the chapel. Guest faculty and first and fifth graders completed this ensemble cast. It was a hilarious and poignant way to begin the Christmas season. Both plays were directed by Lower School drama teacher Aimee Zivin.

Alumni compete against varsity teams for CRU bragging rights
SAS alumni also came back to play over the Christmas break. Alumni vs. varsity boys’ basketball and soccer games were held at the Upper School to see who would reign supreme. On Sunday, December 28, player/coach Carter Cowan ’10 headed up the alum team consisting of “Big Shot” Nick Belisle ’09, “Dunkin” Josh Duncan ’07, Alex Taube ’09, Ben Haggerty ’09, Sam Klatt ’09, Ryan Bishop ’09, Andrew Brown ’10, Will Rice ’07, Trey Axe ’05, Grant Wilson ’09, Jake Boxberger ’09, Matt Johnson ’10, Walker Wroe ’08, and Alec Garza ’10. The alums ran the “run-ngun” and “stall” offenses using a shuttle system of players on a three-minute rotation and it led them to prevail over the varsity with a 65-55 win. Former SAS soccer stars, a couple of faculty members, and even a few alums who never actually played soccer, while students at St. Andrew’s brought their A-games to the Alumni Soccer Cup on January 3. Greg Burciaga ’07, Carter Cowan ’10, Alex Grimm ’10, Ernesto Camacho ’10, Ty Carper ’10, Michael Petrick ’10, Matt Johnson ’10, history teacher Richard Kriese, Declan Fitzsimons ’08, and coach/history teacher John Fitzsimons all did their best to compete against a top-notch varsity team. In the end, the alum team lost 1-4, due to technical difficulties, a shortage of manpower, or perhaps because they were a bit out of practice, but certainly not for lack of heart — look for a rematch next year! No matter who won or lost, it was good to see so many alumni back on the Southwest Parkway campus.

Rock the Endowment! The Austin Music Hall was alive with incredible music and fun at St. Andrew’s Concert for the Endowment, featuring Bob Schneider and his orchestra. A crowd of more than 600 St. Andrew’s families and friends gathered on Sunday, November 7, for good food, great music, and fantastic live and silent auctions. Bob Schneider, an Austin music icon, played an amazing set that included songs from his current album, Lovely Creatures, and other favorites. He lived up to his legendary status as a fantastic entertainer, with most of the St. Andrew’s crowd up on the dance floor! Annual concerts such as this underscore the school community’s commitment to increasing the St. Andrew’s Endowment Fund, and also help to raise awareness of its importance. The Endowment Fund is composed of gifts intended to supplement scholarships, teaching chairs, departments, and sustaining funds for programming and facilities. This year’s concert netted almost $220,000. A very special thank you to our many sponsors and to concert co-chairs Mary Ann and Ben Frishman and Pam and John Myers and the entire concert committee for making this event such a great (and fun!) success.

Why does St. Andrew’s need an Annual Fund? As with all independent schools, tuition and fees do not cover all the costs associated with operating a firstrate educational institution. St. Andrew’s Annual Fund represents approximately 6% of St. Andrew’s operating budget and is a very important $675,000 that is needed each year. So far, 312 out of 690 St. Andrew’s families have participated. Please consider a gift – of ANY SIZE – to the Annual Fund. And remember that Annual Fund contributions are tax-deductible! Annual Fund contributions in the past have subsidized the purchase of new computers, new classroom supplies, new athletic and fine arts equipment and materials, kept our campuses safe and clean, helped our teachers reach their full potential with professional growth opportunities, and more. We hope you will consider a gift to St. Andrew’s Annual Fund. Pledges are being accepted NOW; final payments are due by June 30, 2011.
Grandparents, we need your support too! All grandparents of St. Andrew’s students are invited to take part in their grandchild(ren)’s education at St. Andrew’s by becoming a member of the St. Andrew’s Grandparent’s Club. All grandparents who contribute to the Annual Fund are automatically members of the St. Andrew’s Grandparents’ Club. As a member of the St. Andrew’s Grandparents’ Club, you will receive special recognition at Grandparents’ Day (on April 20 and 21) and all Grandparents’ Club members receive invitations to special St. Andrew’s events throughout the year. Whether you live close by or across the country, you can be an active participant in your grandchild(ren)’s education. Please support the Annual Fund today and make a difference in the lives of your grandchild(ren) and all students at St. Andrew’s! 46 • St. Andrew’s Episcopal School • www.sasaustin.org

2009-2010 Annual Fund The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of giving at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School and it is the first and most important gift the School asks of parents, trustees, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends. The Annual Fund subsidizes technology, athletic, and art needs, classroom supplies and equipment, and other important programs at St. Andrew’s. Every gift, large and small, makes a significant difference in the life of our school. ST. estate philanthropy: the Bailey Society St. Andrew’s Estate Philanthropy Program, The Bailey Society, is St. Andrew’s recognition society for all individuals who have named St. Andrew’s as a beneficiary of their estate plan*. It is named in honor of the late Bishop Scott Field Bailey who was present to “turn the spade” at every groundbreaking in the history of St. Andrew’s until his death in 2005. As a founder of the school, and a pillar of both the Episcopal Church community and the St. Andrew’s School community, it is fitting that St. Andrew’s planned gift recognition society, The Bailey Society, be named in his honor.

The school’s commitment to this program is demonstrated in the amount of money distributed each year to students, as well as the amount of funds raised for financial aid from the school family. In 20092010, $1.3 in financial aid was distributed to St. Andrew’s families. The main vehicles for financial aid fundraising are the Family Fair and Spring Fest, two fun community events held each spring, which traditionally net at least $300,000 for the financial aid program (less than 1/3 of the amount distributed). In addition, a portion of tuition proceeds is given annually in financial aid to encourage and support socioeconomic diversity.
