Welcome, may I introduce myself? My name is Sascha Elzinga. At the moment, I am a third year Spatial Design student at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). In my practice as Spatial Designer I am looking for specific and remarkable topics from which I can create a conceptual plan. With the resulting concepts I try to broaden existing frameworks or create new ones. Thorough research I see as an essential part of my practice. I am constantly looking for the aesthetics of the present and future and try to approach these with each project. In addition to architecture, I am captured by designing objects, furniture, autonomous works and photography. I implement these passions into my work.

IN MEMORIAM The city of Schiedam, with its ports, sloshing water, lovely homes and peaceful clanging fascinated me. How was that possible? I was always discouraged to go there but it proved the contrary at that moment. Though, the city that shined in the summer daylight, knew many other sides. It was the number of disgruntled residents, hard working tradesmen, vacant buildings and a lack of students, resulting in a city that is stuck in a daily grind. This concerns the present, but the past knew similarities. Prosperity, labour and new emerging markets created overconfident situations for the city. Workers worked 15 hours a day and found their solace in that what was such a relief: Gin. Gin did forget all the worries, brought good fortune and an escape from the present. At least, for a moment. The drunkenness brought anger, incest and domestic violence. This dark period was known as Black Nazarene. Schiedam wants to forget this past, but “misses” it on the other hand. The residents of Schiedam are very interested in a certain part of the past, but always tend to / need a different part of the history in addition to it, namely all the negativity that the Gin production brought to the city. Nevertheless, this Gin industry not only has been negative, but also created the “Golden Age” for the city. With this project I wanted to create awareness for the fact that what had happened was an important period for Schiedam. Important, because after this, the city grew and learned from its mistakes. With the demolition of the characteristic working-class houses, there is no visual memory left considering the theme. Even though, nowadays there is a great need to make this history visible again. The monument leads the visitor through the landscape to the core of this miss. This core consists out of a wooden structure, which was created by the reconstruction of the foundation of an working-class house.

HYPERMOBILITY CENTRE In 1967, when the Hypermobility Syndrome (HMS) was brought to light in the medical industry for the first time, it was defined as the presence of musculo-skeletal symptoms (mostly pain) in otherwise “healthy” people. Now, almost half a century later, we know that there are 7 types of Hypermobility. When the Hypermobility Syndrome occurs, we speak of a missing gene that causes the attachment of connective tissue muscles and joints. This with flexible joints, dislocations (constantly moving joints), bone fractures and chronic pain as a result. A striking aspect to the Hypermobility Syndromes is that most patients probably do not even know that they are hypermobile. At least, until something happens and they start to get pain for the first time. It was the lack of a Hypermobility Centre for the 7000 Dutch patients, the relatively unknown syndrome and the ignorance of many resulting in my opinion that there needed to be a special centre. It offers patients the opportunity to dive deep into the information about the syndromes, so that a specific form of“acceptance” emerges, and offers interested people an educational and interesting way to get acquainted with Hypermobility Syndromes. This information centre will be enhanced by a Proprioception Centre, which gives the visitors a complete new look at the human body and the processes that take place within it. A visit to the building should enhance the individual experience and realization how our human body is functioning. Because patients with the Hypermobility Syndrome are not familiar with the principle of proprioception (which is the sense of the placement of the parts of the human body), are often clumsy and bumping into other things what results in subsequent complaints, feel and explore yourself is the main target.

POLDER CHAIR “Every mode of production has an embedded code of ethics, which inevitably is influenced and has an impact on its context. The context presents limitations but also unique opportunities for production.” This particular assignment started with my home(town) as the centre, which was the source of the production of a piece of furniture. The characteristics of the Polder Chair are based on the longlasting traditions and cultures of the ground that I’m living on. The territory of Barendrecht is inhabited by an ancient culture since 4900-3500 BC, which is called: The Swifterbantculture. Since then, Barenrecht has always been an agricultural village. Until approximately a century ago. In this time span the tradition has been pushed away by “Utopia”. The traditional agricultural existance of Barendrecht is of great importance to show people nowadays how this lifestyle looked like. The city is moving and claiming parts from the (traditional) polder landscapes to fulfill the dreams of expansion. The consequences could be catastrofical if this process keeps going on and on. Where is the awareness of space and time?

REMISE VASE

REMISE VASE The design of the Remise Vase is based on the qualities of the material. Rubber is as well in a figurative as in a literal way a material that is flexible and versatile. Because of that, there were many opportunities in the field of usability and product development. In my design I wanted to push the boundaries of the material and combine these with contemporary production methods as 3D printing. The stratification of the vase refers to both the environment and the building of the IAFFR and continues its round shape yet geometrically. As an sustainable addition, the PLA in rubber form is also biodegradable.

“Beards & Suits helps you as a creative entrepreneur to be stronger and more successful in practice.� The business station is a (currently quite anonymous) place at our school where students are welcome to learn more about entrepreneurship. The main goal is to increase the exposure of this station and to transform their space into an inspiring, new place. To make this space attractive for Willem de Kooning Academy students, Leisure Management students and business there needed to be an inventive and referring concept. I created the Business Arena, where one can openly pitch, debate, discuss, work in multidisciplinary teams, work inside spaces for meetings and use an open, shared space where actual plans come to life. The arena can not only be understood literally, but also as a metaphor. To create the feeling of an arena, I wanted to implement characteristics of ancient arenas. Because of the fact that there was a budget linked to the assignment, I used existing resources within the Business Station and the identity of the Willem de Kooning Academy with its black, yellow and white colours. I found out that I could create a chariot by transforming and reconstructing a bin. This chariot could be compared with an pulpit, a place where the attention goes to the speaker.

INTERSECTION SCULPTURE This sculpture is derrived from a personal story that I wrote. It was the result of a talk I had with Indian Architect Siddartha Das (Siddartha Das Studio / New Delhi). The theme of the object is the word force. Force symbolizes an operation, exercise or destruction. Power, which is inseparable from force, is in fact an invisible principle, but when this is expressed on an object, it will become visible. It is a tear in a boulder, a bent fencing, a dent in the metal, a polished gemstone, ebb and flow. I was touched by these thoughts and started creating. The longer it took, the more I could thought about the purpose: It were the shadows that left their contours on the other layers, touched and formed the metal. It was an intersection of forms, lines, light and darkness and seemed to be an explosion of thoughts. It was that what I was looking for.
