Why Architecture?
“What attracted me to architecture is the need to Understand the different cultures of this world. The People, the ideas, the concepts, just how people live is so important to know. You cannot design just to design because it just looks cool. Understanding the reason from the first stroke of a pencil until that last brick is set in place is what I get excited about. We have to design for peoples sake, it is an expression of our everyday lives. Architecture is as alive as each breath we take, it is our past, present and future. Having healthy architecture i believe creates healthy people, and having healthy people creates a reason for people to believe that architecture is not a mere box to sit in, but something to make their lives a little bit easier. -Sasha Nicole Garcia

SHELTER PROJECT World Visions held a contest that involved designing a disaster shelter that would house families who lost their homes for a temporary to long term residence. We wanted to get away from just the tarps that usually are handed out for cover, we wanted to design something that could be respected as a home and people would appreciate more . Hosted by John Brown University in Arkansas where we traveled down to participate at the end of the semester. Throughout the semester each student designed different ideas, which came down to two in the end that actually got built by our hands. We had to research and build each part piece by piece. We all had different roles. I was in Charge of the programming of the shelter and how multiple could be set up in a group. I also did the Photoshop work for the shelter different locations.

STAIR PROJECT We had to construct a staircase for our structures class demonstrating how tension and compression work. I had one side of the tread in tension by having the tension member, a suspended rope, come from the ceiling and the other side of the tread in compression by the compression member, a structural pole, coming from the ground up to the tread.
LIBRARY
For this Project we had to design a public Library Space and a community space for the residents of Geneva Illinois. The age of the digital and written word was part of what we had to design for. The site is off a river with a drop off of about a gradual decline from 10’ to 0’ when the land hit the river. My inspitation came from the landscape, there where the rocks were stacked on top of each other that cascades down the slope and there was this huge tree that was the center point of the site. The Library space made out of different woods and the interior floors cascaded down in an a big open space divided into thre floors, an adult section, ditgial section, and a children’s section. just likethe slope of the land and for the community center portion of the building it was stacked like the rocks that were stacked and embedded in the soil.

COMMUNITY CENTER | Tropical This Project we focused on Minimal systems. We had to design a community center for Tropical climates. We had to consider the different cultures, materials that would change for each location, and where we got our influence from for the specific location. I chose to a panel system for an easy set up. For the tropical location in Gambia, Africa I chose to have a series for bamboo panels and louver panels to lock into place with each other. The material is lighter because of the hotter climate. The louvers can be opened and closed When needed. the outer and inner walls are movable to make bigger spaces or open it to the outside. I could be transformed into a concert stage to accommodate this lively culture and their musical festivities. The Culture is very lively, there are many different markets, music festivals, and a very close knit community. I got my inspiration from the different flowers of each different location, I broke down each flower petal and derived a floor plan from there.

EUROPE SKETCHES | Spain and Italy After my Junior year at Judson University we have a summer sketching and watercoloring course in Europe. We spend a month traveling in Italy and Spain. ASCENDING FAITH CHAPEL This Senior Project we had to Design a 1000 seat chapel that served Judson University on campus and it could be used by the surrounding Elgin community. I had to reasearch and plan where to have the building would be. I was part of the programming team that decided and researched what should go into This type of building. It is split up in the the main worship space with all the other functions and rooms wrapped around it. The worship Space took the shape of my concept of God not having corners, he has an all emcompassing exsistence. I made the spaces feel like an intamate hug, having a sense of security in the circular plan.
