MAHAVIR BHAGWAN The Embodiment of Love Leaving Asthik-gram Mahavir proceeded in the direction of Shvetambika town. The trail to this town passed through a dense and desolate forest. When some shepherds saw Mahavir entering the forest they shouted, "O Monk, stay put for a minute. This is a dangerous trail. There is a black serpent with venomous gaze on this trail. His hissing and gaze burn plant and trees. Even flying birds and standing humans drop dead. Please leave this trail and take a different route." Mahavir heard this fear filled call of the shepherds. With a serene smile he raised a hand as a gesture of assurance. With firm steps Mahavir went near the snake-hole. All around human and animal skeletons could be seen. There was not a single green leaf as far as the eye could see. Close to the snake-hole was a delepidated temple. Mahavir stood in the shade of this temple and started his meditation. After some time the giant black serpent came out of its hole hissing fiercely. It had seen a human being after a long time. The man was standing firm and fearless with closed eyes. The serpent was surprised. It looked at Mahavir with its venomous red eyes. Like flames from a ball of fire, its poisonous eyes emitted waves of venom. It hissed awesomely. But all this had no effect whatsoever on Mahavir. The serpent was astonished, "Till today every man I came across has been consumed by my first venomous hiss and this man stands still, absolutely unmoved." The serpent glanced at the sun and once again focused its gaze at Mahavir and hissed at him with renewed anger, but in vain. It slithered from the line of the expected fall of the body and than with all its force sank its fangs in Mahavir’s toe and injected all its venom. It drew back and waited expectantly again in vain. The angry serpent, vexed further by its failure stung Mahavir twice again. All its three attacks were wasted. Mahavir stood undisturbed. The serpent was astonished to see milk oozing out instead of blood from the spots where it has stung on Mahavir’s toe . Bhagavan Mahavir was standing unmoved. His face was glowing and on his lips was a charming smile, like a blooming rose. His eyes reflected the inner compassion.
The serpent continued to stare with surprise. Confused by its failure it was lost in its thoughts. Involved in his spiritual pursuits, Mahavir uttered din his deep and tranquil voice, " O Chandakaushik ! Open your inner eyes. Be calm and remember your past life. do not inject venom of anger in your life. Rise above the deadly poison of anger. Mahavir opened his ambrosia filled eyes. When the serpent met his gaze, it felt as if a wave of peace and tranquillity had engulfed its inner self. It appeared that its venom was slowly vanishing. It was lost in deep thoughts. Its dormant memory started unfolding and it acquired Jatismaran Jnan. Incidents from its past two births surfaced in its memory. It realized that it had suffered excruciating pain and degradation due to extreme anger and acute attachment during those births. The heat of repentance melted its vices. Its spirit embraced enlightenment and mind became tranquil. It touched the pious feet of Bhagavan Mahavir and resolved, "O Lord ! Now I will not look at any one at all throughout my life. I will not eat anything. I will not drink also. I will just put my mouth in the hole and lie still in the shadow of your feet. I will now at one for all my sins committed during the last three births and improve my future."
Knowing that the serpent had become harmless, throngs of people started arriving from nearby villages. They worshipped the serpent-god by offering milk and sweets. But the serpent was lying, keeping its hood in the hole, in meditation without even a trace of movement . Swarms of ants were attracted by the sweets. They started stinging the serpent. But the serpent tolerated these afflictions with equanimity. It silently took the last vow (fast unto death). It tolerated the agony of hunger, thirst and the stings of ants. Its body became almost perforated, but it did not react at all. After fifteen days it died and was reborn as a god in the Sahasrar dimension. Quashing of the Flames Once, leaving Shravasti, Shraman Vardhaman was going to Haliddug village. On the way he saw a large banyan tree. finding it suitable, he went under it and started his night meditation. It was winter and a cold wind was blowing. Gaushalak was also following him. As Gaushalak could not tolerate the piercing wind, he shifted to the other side of the tree. After some time some wayfarers also stopped under the tree. They collected dry wood and started a fire to cook food. They spent the night there and kept the fire burning. The fire slowly spread and reached the spot where Mahavir was standing. Gaushalak shouted a warning. But Mahavir had no Early in the morning they broke camp and went away. The fire was left burning. Slowly it spread and engulfed the surrounding dry twigs and leaves gathered under the tree. The wind was blowing in the direction of meditating Mahavir. The fire slowly spread and reached the spot where Mahavir was standing. Gaushalak shouted a warning. But Mahavir had no awareness besides that for his soul. He was unmoved by the heat of the approaching flames. He was busy quashing the ultimate fire, the fire of rebirth. The flames reached him and scorched his feet. Even this acute pain did not reach the depth of his tranquillity. After some time the fire subsided on its own. Torture by Kalahasti Leaving Chorak village Mahavir arrived at the out skirts of Kalambuka village. This village was ruled by two brother, Megh and Kalahasti. Although they were landlords and chieftains. they were still involved in unlawful activities like looting the neighboring kingdom. Tying them with ropes, he tortured them inhumanely. When he still could extract no information from them be
ordered them, to be taken to his elder brother, Megh, for further torture and interrogation. Shackled like criminals, They were produced before Megh, who felt as if he was looking at a known face. He suddenly recalled that once he had seen prince Vardhaman at the court of king Siddharth. This shackled spy seemed to have an uncanny resemblance with the prince. He came closer and recognized that the person in bondage was none else but prince Vardhaman who had become a Shraman. He fell at the feet of Mahavir and, with tears of repentance in his eyes he begged to be forgiven. When released Mahavir resumed his journey. Among the Aborigines It was the fifth year of practices of Bhagavan Mahavir. He moved into the Radh (or Ladh) country. This area was also known as Vajra Bhumi or Shubhra Bhumi and was inhabited by scant and scattered population of rustic aborigines. Gaushalak also followed Mahavir wherever he went. The people of this area did not know anything about ascetics and their ways. They stared in astonishment when they saw a naked person standing like a statue at godforsaken places. When they did not get any response or even reaction on shouting at him, they would get irritated and hit him with sticks, lances, bones and stones. Some on his body. Shraman Mahavir equally tolerated all these tortures and continued his advance toward purity. He wandered from one place to another and once in a while came across small villages. Not so very often he would enter a village to beg food and mostly got dry and stale food. However, most of the time he went without any food. People would curiously stare at him and wild dogs would pounce on him and bite. For their crude entertainment, the aborigines would pick up Mahavir and throw him on the ground. Mahavir spent almost five months in that area during his first visit. Once again, during the ninth year of his practices, Mahavir returned to this area for about six months.
WANT A MUSICAL CAREER??
“Music expresses what cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”. Who doesn’t love music? But, for those to whom music is the only and absolute passion, a career in music is that one thing that can further mould their raw talent. This article continues the on-going series “After 12th”. Once you finish school,if music is your set career option, this article might prove helpful in understanding what it takes to to pursue and and settle for a fulfilling career in music. The first step in analysing the term, ’Career in Music’ is to understand the fact that it involves not only the art, but also the science behind it. One has plenty of options once they decide to enter this field. A few of them are composing, software development, arranging, music teaching, performing professionally, sound editing and recording, virtual reality sound environment creation, music production and radio jockeying. Teaching: Music teachers have always been in demand.Be it in schools, colleges or in private. With the economy booming and reality shows like Indian Idol and Star Voice of India capturing the fancy of TV viewers, a lot of youngsters are now keen to learn the art of music. In fact, a increasing number of aspiring students are increasingly taking private lessons for beginners in order to make additional pocket money. One great advantage of teaching music privately is that the working hours are very much flexible, only a few hours every week. Sound Recording and Editing: With the Indian filming industry at its peak, another popular option for music lovers is sound
recording and editing. A good sound editor often deals with intricate electronic equipment. Hence, this brings an addition requirement of training in audio science. The growing hype in the gaming culture among youngsters has brought forth various options in the sub-field of virtual reality sound creation as well. Production/Direction : Those pursuing Production and Direction will learn about the creation and production of recordings of music and how to successfully complete recording projects that are typical of those found in contemporary professional recording and production environments.Second only to singing (popularity-wise), music production and music direction are extremely viable options. There are a growing numbers of opportunities in the television as well as film industry. However, the competition is also mindboggling and it may take time for one to make a mark in the industry. Radio Jockey :
Not entirely technical, radio jockeying as a career has gathered steam over the last few years owing to the phenomenal growth of the radio industry in our country. The triumph of every radio station largely depends on its radio jockeys (RJs). An RJ must have in-depth knowledge of the various genres of music to be able to keep the listeners hooked on to the radio station. Apart from putting up the shows and playing music, the RJ also gets to interview celebrities, conduct contests held by the station as well as provide information on current news and facts on simple things around us. Says Dakshin Adyanthaya, who has worked with a famed radio station as a campus reporter a few weeks ago, “An RJ is required to be spontaneous and have good command over the language”. Music Therapy : Quite unlike conventional careers, Music Therapy is starting to slowly gaining recognition as an important science of healing. According to
Harendra Khurana, who is a musician and music therapist. Human beings tend respond to different types of sounds in different ways. Hence, such sounds can be used to provide therapy to the various people who suffer from physical pain, mental illness, high stress, depression, etc. This field is believed to receive a huge following in the up-coming years and may soon offer excellent career opportunities for those who believe in the concept. Other worthy options include becoming a music business attorney, musicologist, music reporter, arts administrator and architectural acoustic consultant . Among these options, music reporting is increasingly gaining prominence with most agencies, magazines, newspapers and music channels hiring music reporters to combine the knowledge and passion for music with those of designing, writing, editing and even hosting shows. Simply music:
One gets to learn the nuances of various genres of music, be it vocal or instrumental, in a wide range of categories and genres. Careers include being a performing artist, studio artist, free lancing or being a part of a band/forming one. The Right Chord: While not all the careers mentioned above need any prerequisites or academic achievements, many employers generally prefer freshers with a diploma, some degree or a certificate in the concerned area or field. This is especially true for those who aspire to pursue highly technical careers such as audio engineering where training in facets like capturing sound, mixing, recording, copying and editing and reproducing sound using electronic and mechanical devices is crucial. INSTITUTES: Some of the institutes, colleges and universities in India offering degree and/or diploma programmes in music include:
Bangalore University Bengal Music College University of Calcutta Bharatiya Sangit Mahavidyalaya (Gwalior) Government Music College (Indore) Ramjas College (University of Delhi) Annamalai University and Institute of Correspondence Education (University of Madras) offer a Bachelor’s degree in music in the correspondence mode. One should also understand the difference between a college of music and music in college and opt for the right one. While there are many universities dedicated purely to music outside India, a study of Indian contemporary and classical music becomes possible in colleges offering music as one of their courses. The campuses that stand numero uno in music studies are the Berkley colleges of Music, Boston and Valencia, Spain. Their courses include songwriting, technicalities in the music industry, Liberal Arts, Music Business/Management, Professional Music, Music Education, Music Therapy, Composition, Contemporary Writing and Production, Electronic Production and Design, Film Scoring, Harmony, Jazz Composition, Music Production and Engineering and several other flexible short-term programs. Personal motivation, the ability to work in a team, talent along with technical expertise, Confidence with showmanship and the ability to work under deadlines are crucial skills required to succeed in the music business. Performers and RJs need a dynamic personality. Musicians and Singers need a specialized knowledge of music theory. With sound knowledge and knowledge for sound, one can safely tread this career just as thousands before them have!
CONSTELLATION JAR Because of my love of the stars, when my daughter was little, I purchased her anight light that shines stars all over her bedroom walls. After seeing a few light-filled jars on Pinterest, I had an idea to fill a jar with the constellations — and I was able to do it using items I had around the house!
Use the awl to poke holes for the constellations. Mine are not accurately placed, it is only a small strip of aluminum after all. I included Hercules, the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper, Draco, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Orion, Cancer and Gemini.
I connected the constellation dots with a silver Sharpie to make them easier to spot.
What you’ll need: - a wide mouth jar – The jar needs to be wide enough to fit the small click light inside. A pickle jar works great. a disposable cake pan small click light, like these -an awl - scissors
Cut a strip of the cake pan long enough to fit around inside the jar and tall enough to reach to the very top of the jar. Use a spoon to brandish out any writing or crinkled parts.
Fill in the other space with more holes. Make the holes smaller than the ones used to make the constellations because it will set the constellations apart.
Roll the aluminum sheet until it fits snug inside the jar. Hold the circle in place by cutting two tabs and folding them in opposite directions.
Put the encircled aluminum sheet inside the jar. Turn the click light on and place the it inside. Top with the lid. I spray painted my jar lid. It’s looks nicer and smells less like pickles.
Take into a dark room and enjoy. The night sky in a holdable form. I connected the dots below so you can see them too. The Little Dipper, the Big Dipper, Draco and part of Orion.

educational information: ["dumb little man" research *.edu]. Advanced search If you can't remember any of these operators, you can always use Google's advanced search.
But instead of just typing in a phrase and wading through page after page of results, there are a number of ways to make your searches more efficient.
Definitions Use the "define:" operator to get a quick definition. [define:dumb] will give you a whole host of definitions from different sources, with links.
Some of these are obvious ones, that you probably know about. But others are lesser-known, and others are known but not often used. Use this guide to learn more about, or be reminded of, some of the best ways to get exactly what you're looking for, and quickly.
Calculator One of the handiest uses of Google, type in a quick calculation in the search box and get an answer. It's faster than calling up your computer's calculator in most cases. Use the +, -, *, / symbols and parentheses to do a simple equation.
Either/or Google normally searches for pages that contain all the words you type in the search box, but if you want pages that have one term or another (or both), use the OR operator -- or use the "|" symbol (pipe symbol) to save you a keystroke. [dumb | little | man]
Numrange This little-known feature searches for a range of numbers. For example, ["best books 2002..2007] will return lists of best books for each of the years from 2002 to 2007 (note the two periods between the two numbers).
Quotes If you want to search for an exact phrase, use quotes. ["dumb little man"] will only find that exact phrase. [dumb "little man"] will find pages that contain the word dumb and the exact phrase "little man". Not If you don't want a term or phrase, use the "-" symbol. [-dumb little man] will return pages that contain "little" and "man" but that don't contain "dumb". Similar terms Use the "~" symbol to return similar terms. [~dumb little man -dumb] will get you pages that contain "funny little man" and "stupid little man" but not "dumb little man". Wildcard The "*" symbol is a wildcard. It's also useful for finding stuff only in certain domains, such as
Site-specific Use the "site:" operator to search only within a certain website. [site:dumblittleman.com leo] will search for the term "leo" only within this blog. Backlinks The "link:" operator will find pages that link to a specific URL. You can use this not only for a main URL but even to a specific page. Not all links to an URL are listed, however. Vertical search Instead of searching for a term across all pages on the web, search within a specialized field. Google has a number of specific searches, allowing you to search within blogs, news, books, and much more: Movies Use the "movie:" operator to search for a movie title along with either a zip code or U.S. city and state to get a list of movie theaters in the area and show times. Music The "music:" operator returns content related to music only.
Unit converter Use Google for a quick conversion, from yards to meters for example, or different currency: [12 meters in yards] Types of numbers Google algorithms can recognize patterns in numbers you enter, so you can search for: Telephone area codes Vehicle ID number (US only) Federal Communications Commission (FCC) equipment numbers (US only) UPC codes Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airplane registration number (US only) Patent numbers (US only) Even stock quotes (using the stock symbol) or a weather forecast regarding the next five days File types If you just want to search for .PDF files, or Word documents, or Excel spreadsheets, for example, use the "filetype:" operator. Location of term By default, Google searches for your term throughout a web page. But if you just want it to search certain locations, you can use operators such as "inurl:", "intitle:", "intext:", and "inanchor:". Those search for a term only within the URL, the title, the body text, and the anchor text (the text used to describe a link). Cached pages Looking for a version of a page the Google stores on its own servers? This can help with outdated or update pages. Use the "cached:" operator. FIXED OR NOT FIXED ?
press conference regarding spot fixing.
It is raining fixes not sixes. The spot fixing scandal has changed the lexicon of the game. The A to Z of cricket:
E Evidence, that’s what the cops claim they have in the spot fixing scandal. From laptops to phones and hotel rooms, it is all on the radar in the murkiest cricket controversy ever, which makes other sports scandals look like it was once famously said: a teddy bears’ picnic.
A And it is not yet over, and there is more to come. And there are more matches under the scanner. And some ex-Ranji players are involved and there are so many skeletons rattling in the cricket closet… so say the cops, not a figment of this reporter’s imagination. So don’t dismiss this as: hey media puts masala and has a field day.
F Fixes not sixes is the mantra on the cricket pitch right now. Shots that breach the fence or sail into spectator stands are not the signature tune. Today, it is jhapaaak fixing, fixing, no jumpin’ silly, silly ya… let’s see all those ex-cricketers and chocolate boys shakin’ their hips to that one. Because you know as well as Shakira that hips don’t lie…
B Bookies, are what comes to mind, certainly not bat and ball. On the run, with the police hot on their heels they have given rise to the debate about whether betting should be legalised. Credited too, with giving cricket it’s biggest WTF moments. And that WTF stands for What The.. and the third word rhymes with duck.
G Go-betweens, links or conduits, these now seem to be the keys to the plot. Now, some ex- Ranji players are being probed for acting as links between cricketers and bookies with their roots in the mafiaso. All this while the owners, some of the richest men in India seem oblivious to everything. Police want to get the go-betweens and make them sing like canaries.

IPL KI MOTOR CHALI POM,POM, POM: Rajasthan Royals cheerleaders perform at Jaipur on May 12, 2013 C Cronje’s shadow falleth long in these turbulent times. The fallen South Africa captain who first put the spotlight on fixing, died in a helicopter crash some years later. Yet, it seems the fallen idol’s lessons have not been learnt. If dead men could speak one would hear Hansie Cronje saying: it’s just not worth it, guys. D Delhi Police seems to have stolen a march over all the others by pinning down the culprits in the hi-octane drama unfolding on the cricket pitch. More Ds tumbling out of the closet -- dark, deadly and dangerous and hmmm.. we’re not talking about Clark Gable and Gone With the Wind. This has become a game of the Dons and we do not mean Don Bradman. Incidentally, another ‘D’ out there. NEERU KNOWS IT ALL: Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar addressing a
Political jhaapak jhapaak jumpin’ jumpin’ GILLY, GILLY YA: Activists from India’s Rashtrawadi Shiv Sena shout slogans as they demand the banning of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket tournament during a protest in New Delhi on May 17, 2013. Police said that they had arrested three cricketers including Test bowler S Sreesanth, for spot-fixing. Eleven bookmakers were also arrested in connection with the inquiry. While the nation is still reeling in shock and a feeling of betrayal persists, people are cynical about political parties trying to make capital of the controversy and professing concern on behalf of the Indian spectator. H Honeytrap. Well show me the money, honey and show me the honey, Mr. Money. Bookies with their faces in shadow, spoke about how t’was easy to lure players with those jumpin’ jhapaak hormones with models. One thought that honeytraps were something out of Mossad novels. Well, honey, the game’s up, the players trapped. Go buzz elsewhere, right now.
I Investigation, is the I-word right now. Everything’s up for investigations from bowling to batting to fielding. Every gesture is under scrutiny. One day, maybe even the stumps will be checked for hidden stacks of cash, hawala money by the underworld spill out as a ball breaks the stumps. Ooh what a sight that would be but nothing would surprise us anymore. J Jiju Janardhan and Jupiter, one can almost envisage a publishing house coming up with a book like the Giant Book of Bookie Names something like the Giant Book of Baby Names which parents-to-be pore over. This one can have names like Pydhonie Petro and Mumbai Metro and something Anil Dubai or whatever. Amusing and imaginative, who thinks of these?

K KKKcricket bhi kabhi clean tha -- Suggestions for Ekta Kapoor’s new serial which can have all the ingredients, suspense, young men with female companions (ahem), crying mothers and fathers crying foul. Let’s have a new kind of disclaimer to this cricket soap: All characters in this serial are not fictitious. Similarity to real persons is purely intentional and certainly not co-incidental. L Lawyers are working overtime these days to prove client innocence. Legal eagles soaring over that cricket pitch claim that the charges would be difficult to prove in a court and confessions could be said to be made under duress. To think before, all one needed was to learn the laws of the game. Today, players come armed with lawyers and protection clauses. Earlier, the only protecion a player had was the groin guard. No wonder critics say cricket has been a lot of b…s. M Money, money, money it ain’t so funny in today’s cricket world. It is raining lakhs and crores on players who, it seems just can’t get enough of the cash. These greedy guys for who nothing is enough, need to read some poetry like: O what a tangled web we weave; when first we practice to deceive.
Bookies’ boy? S Sreesanth bowls during a training session at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Indian police have widened their probe into spot-fixing after the arrest of three players and 11 bookmakers. Sreesanth meanwhile dropped names of political heavyweights after being detained by the police and even threw his mobile at the police, reports stated. Talk about going copwardly mobile N Nupur Mehta and N Sreenivasan, they make such an incongruous pair, the former a model used to lure players while the latter the president of the powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Today, though nubile (or otherwise) Nupurs are the bait for our boys in blue, like that cliché goes, while the Sreeni needs to become a tough meanie. O Overs were going for R20, 40 or 60 lakh like the cops said and that’s a huge amount of moolah for half-a-dozen deliveries. Till right now, it looks like the bowlers are the only ones caught up in the fixing business. Yet, let’s not count out anything as of now, with the plot still unfolding YJNK -- You Just Never Know. Cricket is a game of gory uncertainties. P Paaji (Sherry) and other experts on the panel, it won’t hurt to speak the truth sometimes. Yes, yes, we know the IPL gives you the bread, butter and the jam but let’s face it: jumpin’ jumpin’ don’t quite cut it any longer. We need one of those famous shaayris by Sherry Paaji on the fixing phenom and we can say bah, bah, instead of wah Q Quiet and no leaping around, one is tempted to say, when you see those cheerleaders still having the courage of their contortions singing and dancing at the shots. We said courage of their contortions and not convictions as, not even those blondes- just-wanna-have-fun-babes, look very convincing these days. R Rajasthan Royals, not looking too royal off late, or loyal really with three players in the dock for spot fixing. Owner Shilpa Shetty needs a long yoga session to see off all the stress this has brought on. Husband Raj Kundra would benefit with a soul searing, heart-baring interview to the
press. Owners, your team players say they have SOS - Sold Our Souls to the highest bidder.
THAT NAILS IT: A laptop, diary and an iPad belonging to bowler S Sreesanth. The gadgets were recovered from a Mumbai hotel and produced at a press conference by the city’s police. Even the taint is electronic in a hi-tech age. Pic/ Bipin Kokate S S Sreesanth, what can one say about the bowler who threw a mobile phone at the police, dropped political names and tried to brazen out from being picked up by the cops? The perennial bad boy of Indian cricket, maverick, twisted talent has a new label to his name: that of cheat. This one’s going to stick for a long, long time. T Tears flowed freely, as cricketers broke down and cried as the police grilled them. Sreesanth cried and Shivaji Park local Ankeet Chavan, was crying too. In a more innocent world, players cried during retirement. One remembers Dilip Vengsarkar crying after Mumbai lost the Ranji Trophy. Columnist Shobha De had termed it sexy. Today, boys cry at police grillings. Hmmm. Grilled on a barbecue fired up by the rage of a nation. U Underworld casts its ominous shadow on this IPL. Suddenly everything is not about googlys or slips and gullies but about gangtas. Dubai-based ones at that. Holding guns to cricketers’ heads. Threatening them with: ‘hit a six or we fix you’ or whatever they say. Players and assorted individuals, quakin’ in their cricket boots. Weird is the word. V Villains, all ye who cheat the world. So, who says the IPL is for cricketers? Till now, it looks like the perfect stage for cops, bookies, mafia bosses, conduits, links, henchmen, yes men, mess men and women whose vital stats matter more than the numbers on the scoreboard. All of them crawling out from the rotten woodwork that is this league. W Who needs spy thrillers these days? The police apparently went on a high-speed chase in order to nab Sreesanth, through the streets of Mumbai
ending up at Carter Road. Speeding cars, sirens etc. etc. the operation was called Operation Marine Drive U-Turn. Move over John Le Carre. We have a rocking plot at the IPL. X Everything is XXX like they say in those only for adults movies.. cricket is moving towards dangerous territory. Big money and babes are now the bywords in a sport which used to be a gentleman’s game. Gentiiiiilman? Who are you kidding? Starlets and models maketh this one for the censors scissors. Bas kya? Y Y are we watching this anyway? So, that technically does not start with a Y in fact, but, just like everything seems twisted in this game, anyway, why can’t we take a little license with letters? With faith fading like a pair of worn out jeans, the spectator is wondering whether he has been made something that rhymes with tutiya. Yes, he has. Z It is cricket’s zero hour. After so many allegations, evidence and pages that seem right out of a spy novel rather than a cricket match, is there anything left to salvage for this game? Clean up quick or soon, the only fans left will be the ones whirring on the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) office ceiling.
THE TAINTED HERO – SREESANTH
Early years Sreesanth was born to Shanthakumaran Nair and Savithri Devi. He has one elder brother and a sister. His brother Dipu Santhan owns a music company in Kochi and his sister Nivedita is a television actress in Kerala. His brother in law, Madhu Balakrishnan is a famous South Indian playback singer. Sreesanth initially was a leg-spinner in his childhood, modelling his action on India's leading Test wicket-taker Anil Kumble, who was to become his Test captain. However, his habit of bowling yorkers led him to convert to fast bowling, after being encouraged by his elder brother. Following in the footsteps of fellow Kerala fast bowler Tinu Yohannan, who earned selection to the National Cricket Academy in 2000, Sreesanth was selected for the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai. He then made his firstclass debut against Goa in the 2002–03 domestic season, claiming 22 wickets in seven matches in the Ranji Trophy and winning selection for South Zone in the Duleep Trophy squad in the same season. He was selected for India-A side in a tour match against the visiting New Zealand side at Rajkot. He claimed one wicket in twelve overs after being restricted with a hamstring injury. He also missed five Ranji Trophy games in that season, although he still travelled with the side for away games. This led to rumours that an astrologer convinced him to take a break from competition to preserve his longevity in the sport, which Sreesanth categorically denied, maintaining that he was training only to regain his fitness. In November 2004, Sreesanth entered the record books when he took a hat-trick against Himachal Pradeshin a Ranji trophy game. He was selected to
represent India B in the Challenger Trophy in October 2005, a domestic limited-overs tournament. He performed impressively in that tournament, earning the Man of the Series award and being the leading wicket taker (7) with the third best bowling average. This led to his selection to Indian team for the home ODI series against Sri Lanka. ODI career Sreesanth was given the new ball in the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Nagpur. After being punished early by Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya, Sreesanth returned to claim his first two ODI wickets at the end of the match. He was left out of the team and was later recalled for the fourth, fifth and sixth ODIs as coach Greg Chappell tinkered with the line-up. He was retained in the squad but did not play in the 5 match series against South Africa, but played all five matches in the tour to Pakistan, recording a haul of 4/58 in the fifth ODI against Pakistani cricket team in Karachi. A good home series against the England in April 2006, in which he claimed 10 wickets at an average of 16.3, including a career best 6/55 in the final match at Indore (in which he was awarded the man of the match award led to him subsequently being awarded a BCCI contract, in the C-grade in May. His disappointing economy rate led him to be left out of the ICC Champions Trophy squad of 14, with the beneficiary being R. P. Singh. He made an unexpected come back to the blue squad due to the injury to Ajit Agarkar later in the tournament. He was also out of the Indian ODI team for the England tour. In the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Sreesanth was selected due to injury to Praveen Kumar. He was expensive in the first game going wicketless at 53 runs in 5 overs. He was selected in the final where he gave away 52 runs in 8 wicketless overs. Test career Sreesanth was selected for his first Test squad in the home series against England in March 2006, in place of Zaheer Khan. He claimed 4/95 in his debut appearance in the 1st Test in Nagpur, where he opened the bowling with Irfan Pathan. He was ruled out of the second Test in Mohali due to illness, but
recovered and captured five wickets as well a 29* with the bat in the Third Test in Mumbai. With the axing of Pathan, Sreesanth became India's leading pace bowler on the tour of the West Indies. He missed the second Test due to an injury but managed to claim his best match figures of 5/72 in the 4th Test in Kingston, Jamaica. Sreesanth's most significant performance to date in Test cricket was his role in the first Test of India's 2006 tour to South Africa at Johannesburg. After losing the limited-overs series 4–0, Sreesanth produced took 5–40 in a display of pace and swing to help dismiss South Africa. This performance helped to bowl South Africans out for just 84, leading to first Indian win on South African soil, for which he was named man of the match. Again, Sreesanth's emotional antics, which have led him to be regarded by some commentators as eccentric, were frequently noted. He was fined after breaching the International Cricket Council's advertising logo policy, and also for "conduct contrary to the spirit of the game" after sending off Hashim Amla after dismissing him.[18] He was also involved in a highly-publicised confrontation while batting against paceman AndrÊ Nel. Nel delivered a series of fast balls at Sreesanth's upper body and after Sreesanth ungainly evaded one delivery, taunted him by gesturing to his chest, indicating that he felt Sreesanth was lacking in courage. On the next ball, Sreesanth gave him the charge and hit the ball straight over the bowler's head into the stands for a six. He then whirled his bat in enthusiasm and danced down the wicket, making fun of Nel and performing a dance. Later, Sreesanth said that he would not repeat anything of the sort, since he could be suspended for violating the code of conduct. Even though he went unpunished for the Nel incident, he was fined 30% of the match fee for running towards Hashim Amla after picking up his wicket, and wearing a branded garment under the jersey. Sreesanth courted controversy once again during the fourth day of the second test of India's 2007 tour to England at Trent Bridge. He was fined half of his match fee for deliberately shoulder barging England captain Michael Vaughan whilst walking
back to his mark. He also bowled a beamer at batsman Kevin Pietersen, which the latter had to take drastic action to avoid. Sreesanth however did immediately apologise afterwards. After the match he said that the ball had slipped from his hand. Soon afterwards, he bowled a no-ball where he overstepped the crease by roughly 2 feet (0.61 m), leading to speculation it was deliberate; the delivery was a bouncer to Paul Collingwood. Former England captain Michael Atherton called for Sreesanth to be banned for the Pietersen beamer, saying that Sreesanth could not control his on-pitch emotions. After leaving out of the Indian team for about a year and half, Sreesanth was called back to play the home Test series against Sri Lanka in November 2009. Sreesanth played the second Test in Kanpur and picked up five wickets in the first innings, which helped India win the match by an innings and 144 runs. Sreesanth was awarded the Man of the Match for taking six wickets in the match. After the match, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni praised him as one of the best bowlers of reverse swing. World Twenty20 Championship, 2007 In September 2007, Sreesanth joined the Indian team in South Africa for the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup following his omission for the one-day series in England. Although his performance in the tournament lacked consistency, Sreesanth managed breakthroughs at critical junctures that were vital to his team's success. During the semifinal match against Australia which India won, Sreesanth got the vital wickets of the Australian openers Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden. The latter proved to be decisive in turning the match round in India's favor. In the final against Pakistan, Sreesanth proved expensive with the ball, but became the centre of Indian celebrations as he held on to the catch in the last over that ended Pakistan's innings and made India World Twenty20 champions. Indian Premier League Sreesanth is currently associated with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. In the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008, Sreesanth became the second leading wicket taker in the
tournament after Sohail Tanveer, claiming 18 wickets. Sreesanth appeared only in the second half of the 2009 edition of the IPL. He could not play the initial matches of the season owing to a stress fracture. He left Kings XI Punjab after the 2010 Indian Premier League and signed for Kochi for the 2011 competition. He signed for Rajasthan royals for the 2012 competition. But he didn't play in 2012 due to injuries. With his spotfixing controversy coming into light during the 2013 IPL competition, Rajasthan Royals terminated his contract. Altercation with Harbhajan Singh
Spot fixing allegation and arrest On 16 May 2013, the Delhi police arrested Sreesanth and two of his Rajasthan Royals teammates, Ajit Chandila andAnkeet Chavan from Mumbai, on charges of spot-fixing during IPL 6. Jiju Janardhan, another key figure accused of spot-fixing, is reported to be Sreesanth's cousin and an under-22 Gujarat player. On 17 May 2013, Sreesanth confessed to spot-fixing. Police reported that Sreesanth was drunk at the time of his arrest and thought he was been arrested for being drunk. When the Delhi police team intercepted him, he was reportedly accompanied with a woman in a SUV outside a five-star hotel inCarter Road Promenade, Mumbai. Sreesanth, and the two other players accused of spot fixing, have had their Rajasthan Royals contracts suspended while their inquiries are pending.
On 25 April 2008, following the victory of his Kings XI Punjab's victory in the Indian Premier League over the Mumbai Indians at Mohali, Sreesanth was slapped under his eye by Harbhajan Singh, the captain of Mumbai. The incident came to light as Sreesanth was caught by TV cameras sobbing inconsolably on the field before the presentation ceremony. Sreesanth later downplayed the incident saying he had no complaints against Harbhajan who was "like an elder brother" to him. Harbhajan's team had lost their third consecutive match when he apparently reacted violently to Sreesanth's approaching him and saying "hard luck". The IPL banned Harbhajan from the remainder of the tournament and prohibited him from collecting his salary after finding him guilty. The BCCI launched a separate investigation into the incident and decided to ban Harbhajan for five ODIs, deeming him to have broken the code of conduct in his national contract. In Australia earlier that year, Sreesanth stated that he would maintain an aggressive attitude on the cricket field, "Sreesanth's way is to be aggressive. Sreesanth will always remain Sreesanth."
Warwickshire In August 2009, Sreesanth signed a deal to play for Warwickshire for the remainder of the English season. Official warnings Sreesanth is noted for his exuberant and emotional behaviour, especially whilst appealing for and celebrating wickets. He has been warned several times for indiscipline both on and off the cricket field, and frequently fined for violating the player conduct guidelines of the International Cricket Council. In October 2009, the BCCI issued a final warning to Sreesanth that any repetition of his code of conduct violations might result in drastic actions such as a ban from domestic the Kerala Cricket cricket.[36] Subsequently, Association also issued a final warning over repeated violations of their code of conduct after Sreesanth failed to turn up at the Kerala Ranji Trophy team camp in Kannur. In November 2009, however, after more than 18 months of omission from the national team, Sreesanth was recalled to the Test squad for the first two matches against Sri Lanka.[38] He replaced Ishant Sharma for the second Test in Kanpur, where his five wicket haul in the first innings of the match earned him the Man of the Match award and helped India to win the Test match by an innings and 144 runs.
REVIEW ISHKQ IN PARIS
an invigorating honesty in the way the couple discuss love and the twist in the pre-climax saunters in slickly. The build-up to the climax, coupled with the mature execution of the written material, keeps you hooked.
is yet another addition to the new-age, urban setting love tale. The film is significant because, besides its theme, it marks Preity Zinta's tryst with film production, besides signaling her return to the big screen after a hiatus. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to the romantic fare BEFORE SUNRISE [Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy], ISHKQ IN PARIS also brings back memories of LONDON PARIS NEW YORK, which released a year ago. Needless to say, ISHKQ IN PARIS is different from the above-named films in terms of story development and execution.
On the flip side, the writing meanders from stimulating to wishy-washy. There are times when the film tries to be different from movies of its ilk, but doesn't really thrive. Sure, it begins with a bang, but it continues to taper as it moves forward. The director uses melodrama to depict anxiety and trauma, but the trouble is, haven't we watched it all in movies earlier?
When an entire film centers on first getting acquainted and then going separate ways, it puts enormous pressure on the storyteller to make every sequence vital. He/she needs to glisten relentlessly. Even accomplished writers/directors find it most demanding to portray a couple falling in love and drifting apart within a few hours of meeting each other... Prem Soni does have a tough task on his shoulders to depict the wobbly relationship between the protagonists.
The DoP [Manush Nandan] endeavors for a certain look and feel and which he maintains all through. The stunning locales of Paris and Prague augment the visual impact. The soundtrack [SajidWajid] is wholesome, with the composers coming up with tracks that capture the mood of the love story. 'It's All About Tonight' is racy, while 'Kudiye Di Kurti' is foot-tapping and the presence of Salman Khan acts as the icing on the cake. 'Saiyaan' is melodious to the core.
Prem borrows the attitude from BEFORE SUNRISE and BEFORE SUNSET films, but he makes sure he affixes those delicate touches that appeal to the Indian cineastes. Since the film is chatty in nature, there are times when weariness sets in and the lines seem contrived [the first hour is strictly okay!], but, eventually, this one springs a pleasant surprise!
What makes the performances work is that the characters are bona fide and credible. Preity is exquisite in every frame. Her eyes emanate genuine warmth and her performance is captivating. It's great to see this supremely talented actress back in top form! Rhehan too infuses energy into his role and compliments Preity at every level. He looks perfect for his part and carries his part with poise and composure.
ISHKQ IN PARIS narrates the story of two strangers, Ishkq [Preity Zinta] and Aakash [Rhehan Malliek], who meet on a train from Rome to Paris and end up spending an evening in Paris. Sparks fly, the two share some wonderful moments before they go separate ways... only to meet again!
Isabelle Adjani is good enough in the few sequences she appears in. Sanjay Lafont doesn't get scope. Shekhar Kapur shines in the songsequence. Chunky Pandey is up to the mark in a cameo.
What goes in favor of ISHKQ IN PARIS is the vibe and the chemistry between its lead actors. The love story has its moments, the humor is subtle and believable and the writers [Preity Zinta, Prem Soni] make sure they spike the narrative with energetic episodes and clever lines. There's
On the whole, ISHKQ IN PARIS is a decent fare, but its fate depends on word of mouth completely, for the film to carve a niche for itself. The delay in release [the promos had been on air for quite some time] coupled with lack of strong face-value might mar its prospects!
