football and was a team captain, “I decided to run for the Students’ Representative Council and was elected. It was part of the process of giving.” Hockey was a character-building exercise and established his framework for team work. He played on the Saskatchewan hockey team at the Canada Winter Games held in Saskatoon in 1971. “Most teams stayed in Athletes’ Village at the old Eaton’s department store, which was a real innovative approach to the housing. We thought we’d being staying in our homes, but we stayed at The Bessborough.” Atchison played one season with the Saskatoon Blades, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins and played three years of professional hockey.
