Innovation key to Saskatoon economy New Chamber president Jason Yochim weighs in on real estate, the economy, and an Uber moment
Joanne Paulson Saskatoon Express rom farming to big business to real estate, Jason Yochim has learned a lot about the Saskatchewan economy over the years. As of May, Yochim – the CEO of the Saskatoon Region Association of REALTORS™ (SRAR) – will spend a year as president of the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce. It won’t be a year without challenges, but he’s excited about the task. “To me, it’s humbling,” he said in an interview. “I have a great deal of respect for the board that I’m part of, and the leadership that’s there, and the expertise – the diversity of it. I take that seriously. “I always try to look down the road and see what’s coming, what are we dealing with in this community, how can we better prepare for it, how can we work better with our stakeholders – our membership, and (levels of) government. “I think change is rapid and we have to make sure we’re responsive to the change and not get too comfortable as an organization. We really need to be attuned to the challenges that our members face ... I think we really need to keep those communication lines open. You can get comfortable pretty easily.” There was indeed some comfort during our decade-long boom, but Saskatoon and KK071120 Karen the province have seen a downturn over

With the economy still struggling, what does Yochim see coming in the next year? “That’s the million dollar question, as to what, economically, will happen,” he said. “But we’re in for a challenging year or so. “When resources come back, particular-

ly oil, it won’t be the same as it was in the past. We can’t rely on it as we used to. “The nice thing about Saskatchewan and Saskatoon is we have a very entrepreneurial, innovative, creative type of businessperson. We see a lot of industry that quietly goes under the radar, doing really cool things as far as innovation and manufacturing and R&D go. We need to
be sure we’re capitalizing on that, so when we develop new things, we’re not exporting the manufacture somewhere else. “That diversity, it’s here.” Yochim points particularly to the food, agriculture and health sectors as places where Saskatoon can innovate – indeed, is innovating – and make a difference. A: While for some, scattering can be a simple solution, it warrants careful consideration. As there’s often no formal marker to represent the person, sometimes families can later experience a deeper sense of loss. For more information, contact Greg Lalach, Manager: 306-244-2103

Willie Desjardins takes Saskatchewan work ethic to NHL Vancouver coach to golf for prostate charity in Saskatoon Ned Powers Saskatoon Express illie Desjardins is a National Hockey League coach with a positive outlook. In mid-June, Desjardins lost a Saskatchewan friend and assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks, Glen Gulutzan, who signed as the new head coach of the Calgary Flames. “He’d been in Vancouver for three years, two on my staff,” said Desjardins, calling Gulutzan “a good coach, an even better person, who will take a winning attitude, structure and different experiences on which the Flames can build. “When we go head-to-head against the Flames, neither of us has a distinct advantage because we know what each other can do. But in today’s style of hockey, most of the pre-game planning usually depends upon that advance knowledge scouts now supply to the coaches.” Most of all, Desjardins is happy for Gulutzan. His signing now increases the number of Saskatchewan-raised coaches in the NHL to five, which is one-sixth of the league’s head coaching population. Gulutzan was born in The Pas and played junior hockey with the Moose Jaw Warriors and Saskatoon Blades. Desjardins and Gulutzan are in a unique company which also includes Todd McLellan with the Edmonton Oilers, Mike Babcock with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Dave Tippett with the Arizona Coyotes. Desjardins doesn’t think the Saskatchewan performance chart is accidental. “Saskatchewan has a rich hockey heri-

tage. We got there by playing outdoors in the winter, by travelling long distances to play games, by the sacrifices our parents made for us. We found out it was never an easy path to take. We learned to appreciate our roots and our heritage.” Unique, too, is the fact each one of the five has worn University of Saskatchewan Huskie colours, some until graduation days, some for shorter periods. Desjardins is returning to Saskatoon on July 19 to participate in the Driving Fore Prostate Golf Classic at the Dakota Dunes course. He will be joined by special guests Bryan Trottier, long-time star of the New York Islanders, George Reed, the legendary Saskatchewan Roughrider fullback, and Andrea Menard, the versatile actress-musician. A year ago, $108,090 was raised and given to the Leslie and Irene Dube Urology Centre of Health at St. Paul’s Hospital. Desjardins, who likes golf well enough to own a course at Cypress Hills, considers this visit a chance to give back to Saskatchewan. “Todd McLellan was the guest last summer and he told me it was a great experience. Prostate cancer is such a worthy cause. One in six men is directly affected, and it not only affects the men themselves but their families. The tournament raises money to buy equipment and certainly increases public awareness,” said Desjardins. For Desjardins, hockey has been an amazing journey through minor, junior, national team and professional systems, as well as providing an opportunity to play in the Netherlands one winter and coach in Japan in another.

with great values. We still stay in touch.” He played in The Netherlands, coached at the University of Calgary, in Japan and with the Canadian national team. He came to the Saskatoon Blades as a mid-season replacement in 1997-98, “and enjoyed my time with Jack Brodsky and Brent McEwen but I had bought a new home and had young children in Calgary and I wanted to go back there.” When he signed with the Medicine Hat Tigers, he took a team that had missed the Western Hockey League playoffs five straight years and built it into one that won championships in 2003-04 and 2006-07. The next great experience in Saskatoon was in 2010 when he coached the Canadian team at the world junior championships. (Continued on page 4)

Desjardins was “one of those boys who grew up in the cold rinks” in Climax, a Saskatchewan community with a population of 82 at the time. He was on the roster of the Moose Jaw Canuck juniors by the time he was 14. He also played junior hockey in Swift Current and Lethbridge. A big turning point came with his arrival on the University of Saskatchewan campus, where he played and was the captain in his final season – 1983 – when the Huskies won the only Canadian college title ever in their history. “There were so many good years there. We reached the Canadian final three straight times, twice losing in the last minute of the finals. The third time, we took a 2-1 lead into the third period and won, 6-2. When you lose in overtime, you don’t forget it. The biggest thing is that when you coach a team for your country, it is the most amazing feeling.” Desjardins became an assistant coach for the Dallas Stars in the NHL for two years, then coached their American League farm team, the Texas Stars, when they won the Calder Cup. offices. Pittsburgh and Vancouver were contenders for his services. When Pittsburgh called, the prospect of working with Sidney Crosby was attractive, “but in the end, there were a number of reasons I wanted to go to Vancouver, a management team I knew and getting my family back to the familiarity of living in Canada.” He’s had no regrets in Vancouver, although missing the playoffs is never any fun. “When I got the job, the first thing I did was fly over to Sweden to make sure the Sedin brothers were happy. They are great hockey players and it’s exceptional to work with them. Some consider us to be
in a rebuilding mode. I think the Sedins are amazing and still have lots of gas in their tanks and we need to find a good winger to match them,” said Desjardins. As a well-travelled man, he has “enjoyed every place I ever played or coached” and says he expects any of his teams “to skate and compete, play hard, which is the Saskatchewan way, and we’ll be fine.” Tee-off time for the golf tournament is July 19 at noon. The bonus for those who register a team in golf can also register a child in Kids on Ice the day before at Schroh Arena. Thirty or more young players, from 10 toKaren 14, will go on the ice with KK071116
Desjardins, Trottier, Curtis Leschyshyn and others. Murray Hill is chair of the tournament this year. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in late 2012, was one of the first patients to follow the pathway in the Urology Centre, and is anxious to give something back. “The diagnosis and the care made me realize that, although I was very lucky to be diagnosed early, many men aren’t. Once I got back on my feet I decided to dedicate myself to raise as much money for the Urology Centre as possible. For my three years on the golf committee, it’s been personal for me.”

valley for future generations of Saskatchewan people to enjoy. There seems to be a public misunderstanding that the MVA shut down the interpretive centre because of the provincial budget cut to MVA funding. Have you ever been to the interpretive centre? It was small, very dated and had limited hours of operation. It was reported that the centre had 14,000 visitors annually. In reality, 14,000 visitors a year is not much considering many of those visitors would be school groups using it as a gathering spot to commence a nature hike to explore and learn about the flora and fauna of the South Saskatchewan River, or the public looking for restroom facilities. A decade ago the MVA wanted to relocate its administrative offices to River Landing and build a swishy new centre. The tens of millions of dollars being contemplated for that project were not to be had, and I wonder if it was the cost of the administrative offices, not the interpretative centre, that stalled that initiative. However, the space still exists and the MVA is stellar at fundraising, so perhaps down the road the authority will re-open an intriguing interpretive centre that will capture the imagination and support of the public. Come to think of it, if only half the

people in this city of 250,000 souls donated $10 a year towards an interpretive centre, it would generate $1.25 million to be used for the centre’s current annual operating costs of $250,000 and provide money to slowly improve the facility. (And I mean donations, not taxes to be diverted into a black hole!) For the provincial government to even suggest that the MVA is an urban park, to be funded by Saskatoon taxpayers, is insane. Saskatoon citizens certainly enjoy the use of MVA offerings, and it is a major tourist attraction for the city — which is why the city contributes to its cost. But it was created by a previous provincial government to be used and enjoyed by all past, present and future residents of Saskatchewan. Our city has made more than its statutory contributions to the MVA over the past 40 years and the authority has tremendous public support, but we cannot absorb the total cost of a provincial conservation zone that extends well beyond city boundaries. The provincial government would do well to remember this as it “reviews” the MVA’s future. In the big scope of the provincial budget, the MVA funding is a minor amount of money for a major amount of support from Saskatoon and Saskatchewan residents. Skip the dishes, but don’t skip the MVA. ehnatyshyn@gmail.com

HOT SAVINGS COOL DEALS! New condos proposed for Market Mall property
T
he Market Mall property will soon take on a new, multipurpose life if the City of Saskatoon approves rezoning and discretionary use applications. The mall’s owners, Fishman Holdings North America, plan to build two condo towers with 444 residential units as well as an underground parking garage with 774 spaces. Fishman has engaged RBM Architecture Inc. of Saskatoon to design the projects, with Lilia Buza as the project architect. Principal architect Paul Blaser said if the zoning approval is given, he expects to be in the ground next spring. The project would be under construction for 30 to 36 months. “It is a process that is happening across North America, where legacy retail like this is being reinvigorated, redeveloped, with residential and other components, to have that sort of great multiuse site…to DC071185 Darlene

create that live-work-shop urban lifestyle,” said Blaser. “Just like Market Mall, the legacy retail is well connected to public transit. You can live here, do your shopping, take care of all your needs and get on a bus. With bus rapid transit… you can take it downtown to work.” The condos will not be built specifically for any demographic, added Blaser. They will be appropriate for all age groups and family types. Blaser noted that Market Mall was the city’s first indoor mall, and will be the first to bring in the new multi-use residential concept. He’s very pleased to have the contract. “We’re thrilled, and particularly we are thrilled working with Fishman Holdings. They’ve been very visionary; it’s the first to happen in Saskatoon. They want this to be something special for Saskatoon, and it’s been a great collaboration.”

River Landing “huge for this city”
(Continued from page 1) he food sector is crucial in a world with a growing population; agriculture is a massive sector for Saskatchewan; and in health, baby boomers are always seeking the next great health or life-saving thing.
The rural-urban connect Yochim grew up in the Unity area, and stayed on the family farm until 1983. The two main things he learned from farming were a good work ethic and the importance of community, and he brought those values to the city when he moved here to work for Northern Telecom. “They were big at that time. It was a good eye-opener to big business,” said Yochim. In 1986, he got into commission sales full-time, starting in life insurance and then going into commercial printing. Printing, he learned, was not his calling, but he did stick it out for four years. “One day I was printing letterhead in frustration for a real estate brokerage and I said (to the broker), ‘if I work this hard in real estate, can I make a living?’ He said, ‘when do you want to start?’ I said, ‘as soon as I get my licence.’” He obtained his residential real estate licence in 1993, and after several years of making that his career, he moved on in 2006 to the provincial government doing commercial leasing, acquisitions and dispersals. Then Harry Janzen called. “Harry Janzen actually called me out of the blue, and said ‘we have this position called manager of member services. It’s to help me in my role and I’m just curious if you’d have any interest in that?’”
JW071103 James
Janzen, the former SRAR CEO, was already ill when he hired Yochim, and he passed away in November, just two months after Yochim started. Yochim uses this analogy to describe how he felt. “It was like farming with your father. Something tragic happens, and now you’re in charge, and you’ve never done the decision making but you know how the process works. Suddenly, you’re the one everybody comes to for the answers, direction, leadership – and you have to step up. You have no choice. “That was my experience at that time.” Yochim has found himself grateful for the “great people, great staff, and great support from within the business community,” and five years later, Yochim loves his job – the greatest job in town, he says. “I really like developing people, whether it’s my staff or the membership,” he said. “I see potential in people and I hate to see wasted potential. If there’s something I can do to help people achieve what their maximum potential is, I’m all about that. “I seem to be able to see what’s on the horizon. I guess that’s part of being a CEO, is vision. Often people don’t see as far as you do, as leader, and they have a hard time accepting what you’re putting out there. And, sometimes, you’re wrong.” Real estate and the Uber moment Speaking of the horizon, Yochim says real estate will have an “Uber moment” not unlike the taxi and travel industries have – where people take the initiative to research products and services, and make decisions, on their own. “I think real estate is starting to see some of that. I think we’ll survive and do
well, but we have to be aware of what is coming and prepare ourselves, and do our best to build our value proposition. “Real estate agents, their value in the transaction is in their expertise. What changes in the Uber moment is the consumer has access to information, like any other industry. They want to sit in bed with their pajamas on, and their iPad, do their research on line – what’s available, what’s my home worth, everything. “But they still need the REALTOR™ to come into the transaction and relate it to their home, in their neighbourhood, in this market.” The availability of information has changed when the REALTOR™ comes into the transaction. “Once, you’d call the Realtor, have a meeting, and go through the information. Now, they have all that research done, and then they call the Realtor. “That’s how we buy. As consumers, we want to be empowered. The REALTORS™ that will do well will market themselves in that arena where they can access those leads online.” Today, the Saskatoon real estate market continues to contain fairly high inventory levels, as it has for at least two years. It’s affected by new construction in the condo market, and even a large number of existing condos – especially the apartment style, Yochim said. “The existing market of resale homes isn’t too bad. We do see about a nine per cent decrease in sales volume, year over year – which isn’t horrible considering everything happening economically out there. “In any market, any home will sell if it’s priced to market. What you can’t do is speculate like you could three years ago.
DC071106 Darlene
Consumers are educated; they know what that home should sell for in that neighbourhood in that market, within a range. If you try to exceed that, they’re not going to buy.” Prices are inching down a bit – a couple of per cent – as the inventory gets absorbed, which could take a year to two years, and “we won’t see any pricing changes upward until that happens,” he said. The life balance Yochim has little free time, and when he does, he doesn’t golf – except in networking tournaments. He does enjoy working with his hands, particularly doing renovations involving everything from carpentry to electrical wiring. Yochim also has a full family life. He and his wife, Jackie, have three children – two sons and a daughter. Their eldest son, Josh, recently graduated with a Commerce degree and is joining Deloitte; he is married to Marie. Second son Jared presently works at Chel Salon, and their daughter Jenelle is going into Grade 12. “It’s nice to see my kids here, having the opportunity to stay,” said Yochim. It’s not just the economy that keeps people, including young ones, here, added Yochim. City amenities are important to developing a city’s quality of life, and therefore he’s behind the recent developments at River Landing, including the Parcel Y hotel and condo development, and the Remai Modern Art Gallery. “River Landing is huge for this city, including the art gallery,” he maintains. “You only have to do a little bit of travel to realize that stuff like this is important.”

City’s investment in Remai not “exorbitant”
Question: You seem to think the Remai Arts Centre will serve Saskatoon well and therefore have defended the exorbitant cost associated with it, despite the fact many people will not be able to afford the entrance fee. Also, the Meewasin Valley Authority trail and environs are free to the public and promote healthy activity, and the library system is also free to Ask the promote literacy to everyone. Why not provide Meewasin with money directly through taxes as you have with the libraries — our money coming from us taxpayers for the benefit of all instead of a few as with the Remai Centre? Mayor Atchison: The question is filled with a lot of inaccuracies. Let’s break it into segments. The first part was the “exorbitant cost” of the gallery. The city has approximately $30 million invested in the Remai Modern Art Gallery. The renovation costs for the Mendel Art Gallery would probably be very similar in 2016 dollars. We are getting a state-of-the-art facility that will be able to house any – and I mean any — international exhibition that any art gallery could have. We can have it right here in Saskatoon. The parkade is a separate cost item that will finance itself in the years ahead. The city had to grant some money to get it going and make it viable, but we have gone to an outside source to operate it. For the Remai Modern, the wonderful gifting of Ellen Remai and all the other donors have made a substantial difference, along with the province and the federal government. So we have about $30 million invested in it. If you look at the reports saying it is $100 million, I ask you, if someone said you could have a $250,000 home for $75,000 would you think that is a good deal? I think more than likely you would say that is a pretty good deal for you. You can use that same analogy with the Remai Modern. As for the entrance fee, the gallery AS071104 Aaron itself on the main floor is free to everyone.
If we have these international exhibitions that cost tens of thousands of dollars, those will be on a separate floor and there may be – but not always – an entrance fee. So to say there is an entrance fee is incorrect. As for the Meewasin Trail, that is another misstatement from this person. The city is putting in almost $1 million a year right now towards the Mayor MVA, plus approximately another $1.8 million in kind to the MVA. The City of Saskatoon will continue to fund the MVA. We have a linkage committee between the University of Saskatchewan, the Province of Saskatchewan and the City of Saskatoon that will be meeting over the next few months to see how we can resolve some of these funding issues. It is exceedingly important to keep the MVA. I didn’t go out and do a bike ride and a marathon for no reason – it was to bring attention to the MVA. The MVA has raised $100 million, and $82 million of that came from sources other than the City of Saskatoon. I think that is a pretty darn good deal for our citizens and we need to work hard to keep the MVA. Question: I would like to know why you don’t go to bat for the Meewasin Authority in getting the provincial government to keep supporting it. Mayor Atchison: We certainly are going to bat and we have been going to bat. If you look at five other cities in the province, they received zero funding for their parks from the provincial government in this last budget. We were at least able to keep ours intact at this point and we will be discussing and negotiating with the province. We prefer to do business quietly rather than making a lot of noisy public pronouncements and sabre rattling. Frankly, that doesn’t get the job done. Did You Know? Last year, visitors to the Gordon Howe campground in Holiday Park spent the equivalent of 12,100 nights there. (Have a question for Mayor Atchison? Send it to editorial@saskatoonexpress. com. Please put “mayor” in the subject line.)

used to go to one of those big box gyms to spin, but I found it wasn’t for me. I was just someone in the class, just a number, kind of thing.” After spinning in her basement for hours and hours, Hertz had an epiphany of sorts. If a regular spin class wasn’t for her, surely there would be others who have the same opinion. Maybe it was time to strike out on her own. She went to British Columbia to receive some training from an expert in the industry and brought back enough information to get 518 Circle Drive East 306.652-6474 www.amishheirlooms.ca

started on her new business venture. At this point, Hertz was all in and started to scout out locations around Saskatoon – places that would have enough parking for her clients. She kicked tires in the Stonebridge and University Heights areas before locating the perfect spot beside Bliss Fine Foods at 1002 Broadway Ave. “It was very important that I find the right space with parking. This is it,” Hertz said of the 1,800-square-foot area she was able to get her hands on. After three months of renovations, it was go time. “This spot has been great.” Hertz brought in a master trainer from Alberta who provided the right kind of education she could impart to the lifeCYCLE clients. “(The trainer) goes across North America helping out trainers – to get better and to want to learn more.” She spent some time looking for the right staff and now has 13 qualified instructors. She thinks there is a chemistry and bond among the staff that is second to none. LifeCYCLE has been in operation for about a month, and though her staff, she offers interesting and fun spin classes. For instance, there are weights that can be put on the 25 bikes she has in her gym to make it a little tougher. “We do a lot of fun things. We try to engage every single person here,” said Hertz.

“We try to get to know every single person who walks through the door. I don’t want to create a cliquey place.” There is no such thing as a beginner class, Hertz says, as she insists clients go at their own pace regardless of experience. And every instructor is aware of what kind of experience each person in the class has. “We want to make it as comfortable as we can for everyone.” For instance, one unique spin on her classes is that halfway through each session, the instructors take a minute to slow things and listen to a gratitude track. “A huge thing to us is spinning with the beat of the music. When we’re working in sync with each other, it can be very empowering.” There are classes for everyone, Hertz stresses, including a unique Sunday offering where instructor Jenna Kobiela runs Soul Sundays every second week. “(The class) is empowering, inspiring and soul searching. It’s a motivational class focused on what is good for the soul.” Hertz is not standing still. She strives to keep things fresh and lively and is always looking at new ideas. “We always want to make people feel welcomed here.” For more information, visit www.lifecyclespinstudio.com/. I
t was a beautiful Canada Day long weekend at Waskesiu. The main beach was packed with people, even moreso than normal for a sunny, hot day in July and August. Paddleboards glided through the swimming area; we even rented one of our own once we figured out where everybody else was renting theirs. Apparently paddleboarding is the new jet-skiing, which is fine by me Columnist — it’s a hell of a lot quieter and far less obnoxious. Anyway, as we were sitting on our little patch of sand, suddenly a series of loud pops erupted nearby. It sounded a bit like someone was bursting balloons, or setting off fireworks. In fact, it was mere milliseconds between hearing the sounds and my brain registering the comparison to fireworks before my stomach dropped to my sandals, because I assumed my family and I were about to get shot. It’s true, right? Every time we hear about a crazed gun-wielding maniac terrorizing a crowd (a rather routine occurrence in modern-day 2016), the media stories always quote a bystander or survivor shakily recounting that he or she thought there were fireworks going off nearby. I wasn’t the only one who figured a terrifying death was on my doorstep. People all over the beach popped up, like gophers out of their holes, peering anxiously in the direction of the sounds. In fact, it got eerily quiet on the beach as everyone around us stopped what they were doing to figure out what was going on. Turns out there was a gun-toting fool on the beach at Waskesiu that day. He was about four feet tall, blond, wearing an expensive pair of board shorts and an air of entitlement. Slowly he was marching through the playground, calmly gripping his handgun in both hands, probably like he’d seen on TV, and was methodically pointing the barrel at kids and adults alike, before pulling the trigger and moving on to his next strike. It was a cap gun — an extremely realistic looking toy handgun which this young gentleman was aiming and firing at perfect strangers on the monkey bars, occasionally pausing to reload another roll of his red paper strips of ammunition. “Well, that’s inappropriate,” muttered the woman behind me as she settled back into her beach chair and picked up her book, giving it a vicious shake to get the sand out from between the pages. Others shook their heads or looked at each other in amazement as the moment passed and everyone got back down to the business of relaxing. “Where are his parents?” I heard another nearby beachgoer ask. I couldn’t keep my eyes off this kid, because the cool detachment he showed as he pretended to shoot total strangers dead was…creepy. Fascinating, but creepy. Where were his parents, come to think of it? I also couldn’t help but think that if this kid pulled this crap in the city, or God forbid in the United States, a hundred SWAT cars would have already been on-site getting ready to take him down. If this kid was black and pulled this crap in the States…well, we all know how that would end. Then I realized that his parents were right there the whole time, metres away from where their son was playacting a massacre. When he paused his imaginary carnage long enough to run over to them, he was enthusiastically high-fived by what appeared to be a number of aunts and uncles. How is this OK? Am I the only parent in the world to think that, more than ever, toy guns are completely wrong and unnecessary? Even though a toy gun can’t actually hurt someone, the act of a pointing a realistic-looking and sounding fake gun at other people is disturbing. It was disturbing before mass shootings became the go-to of terrorists everywhere, but it’s even more disturbing now. Yes, I know. The kid could have been using his thumb and forefinger, or a tree-branch, or his sister’s Barbie doll, to do the same thing. Except it’s not even close to the same thing. I’m pretty sure most people are not going to rise up in momentary horror believing they’re about to get shot because some kid is making “Pew! Pew!” noises and pointing a stick. I’m also not talking about a kid pretending to hunt, or use a gun for reasons other than killing innocent people. I don’t know if they make fake long guns, but I’m sure plenty of kids run around pretending to shoot deer. Fine. I’m not anti-gun, so save your cards and letters. I’m not going to call for a ban, because I hate bans. I’m just going to ask for common sense. When the entire world is on edge over gun activity, find your kid a new toy — preferably one that doesn’t prompt him or her to emulate mass murder, and that’s a hell of a lot quieter and a lot less obnoxious.

It can take a lifetime to find freedom reedom. It seems like this is something I’ve been looking for all my
life. I went from a residential school to being one of the 1970s Scoop children to countless so-called foster homes, groups home and finally into crowbar hotels. About the only sense of freedom I recall was growing up on a Northern trap line. I thought aboutDarlene freedom many DC071147
times during the Canada Day weekend and also into American Independence Day. It’s been decades since I’ve been locked up. It took many years to realize I can now do anything I’ve dreamed of. I can do anything I want without someone telling me what to and when to do it. There are many things I used to dream about while confined, and many of those things I’ve done.

One of the things I used to think about was hitchhiking around. When I was a teenager, my buddies and I would hitchhike to major cities to attend rock concerts. This was probably one of my best memories as an adolescent. A few years back, I had the entire summer free. Since my partner at the time had to work, she suggested I take the time and do something I’ve always wanted to do. I rolled up a tent and all the camping supplies I would need to hitchhike all over Northern Saskatchewan and intoDarlene Alberta. I started off in DC071129

Saskatoon, and within a few hours I was in Prince Albert. I continued to go north until it was nearly dark, and that was when I set up my first camp. I didn’t carry a cellphone but I did take along a small battery-operated radio for news and weather, and the occasional Johnny Cash song. I met so many wonderful people along the way; some even invited me to their homes. Of course, I politely declined and they understood after I told them my story. It wasn’t long before I left Saskatchewan and went into Alberta. There again, I met people from all walks of life. One man, around my age, was having such a good time with me he wanted to get his camping supplies and come with me. I told him I was a lone wolf. By the end of the summer I made my way back to Saskatoon, once again ready to take on the world. I kept a journal of my adventures and the people I met. Sometimes I read the journal and remember what an incredible time I had. However, hitchhiking isn’t something I would suggest. There were a few times I had to refuse a ride because I could smell alcohol coming out of the vehicle. These days I find the best prison, one with walls that seem to reach for the stars, is the one I built around myself. This is a tough one, because it’s something I didn’t realize I had built. But, brick by brick, this is just another prison I can walk out of. I’ve done it before, and maybe one day, with the help of the Creator and the belief in myself, I will find that personal freedom. All the world’s a circus Midsummer goes “over the top”
Joanne Paulson Saskatoon Express ick Bottom is a tough character to play. Ridiculously confident and hugely self-aggrandizing, the lead role in A Midsummer Night’s Dream’s “play within a play” mixes up his words, like “odious” for “odours.” He knows all, yet knows nothing. He’s a terrible actor, and thinks he’s wonderful. Here, then, is the contradiction: It takes a good actor to play a terrible one. Therefore, Joshua Beaudry, a king of Shakespearean comedy in these parts, is ready to take him on. “Bottom is the unofficial leader of the group (known as the rude mechanicals); he’s the one everybody turns to, to hear his pearls of wisdom…and I use the term wisdom loosely,” said Beaudry in an interview. “There’s a slight tinge of insecurity to his desire to always thrust his opinion in; he’s always worried that he won’t be seen as the most important. When other people have opinions or express concerns, he always has to be there with an answer.” A Midsummer Night’s Dream (MND) is this year’s comedy at the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan festival… and funny it will be, promises Beaudry. Perhaps, ridiculously funny. “The performance style (of the mechanicals) is quite different; they are terrible. And I wanted Bottom to be terrible, but in a good way,” he said. “We’re going over the top with our performance.” Beaudry doesn’t want to give too much away, but will say that Bottom “is fearless. KK071112 Karen
N
He wants to prove that he is worthy of his stature, his position.” MND is a complex weaving of three groups of people: the lovers, the fairies, and the mechanicals. Magic complicates the various relationships and there are the usual and many misunderstandings. S on S is known for its unique stagings of Shakespearean plays, and Midsummer this year is no different. “The setting is a sort of a circus world so it’s very unconventional,” said Beaudry. “(It’s) like the mechanicals are almost circus freaks. Our makeup is not clownish, but very dark, with extended lines,” he adds, drawing on his face with a finger. The ideas for makeup flowed after Beverley Kobelsky weighed in with her concepts. “Beverley gave us a whole bunch of photos she put in the dressing room, with the makeup she wanted us to have – like pictures of Alice Cooper,” said Beaudry, laughing. And then, there’s The Roving Show. This is Beaudry’s baby – created and directed by him; although when that is suggested, he says it’s “partly mine; mostly Shakespeare.” “I’ve edited down The Tempest to about a 45 to 50 minute show,” he explained. “I had this idea; it didn’t quite work out that way, but before casting was done on Midsummer Night’s Dream, I thought whoever was playing the mechanicals could also play the mechanicals in my Roving Show. It didn’t work out that way, because it wasn’t all men playing the mechanicals.” (The Roving Show plays on the same nights

Right: Joshua Beaudry (Photos by Joanne Paulson.) as J. Caesar, an all-female cast, so it required an all-male cast.) “But I kept that notion of modern-day mechanicals who come down to the site to participate in A Midsummer Night’s Dream…and aren’t accepted into the festival, so they do their own rogue show off site. “Seeing as they weren’t really prepared, they use whatever they can find in their truck to do the show.” Envision, for example, a hockey stick serving as Prospero’s staff. “The beginning of our performance, in a way, is open to anyone coming to see J. Caesar. We take people all long the river here, in this general area.

“And it’s amazing, because we rehearse in different locations by the (former) Mendel. We tend to pick up quite a crowd, who watch a scene or two.” A Midsummer Night’s Dream runs in repertory with J. Caesar until Aug. 21 in the tent on the riverbank; The Roving Show also runs the same nights as Caesar. Mondays are dark. For tickets, go to www.shakespearesask.com.

Front seat passenger comfort was excellent. Seat adjustments are the same on both sides of the car, making the passenger seat just as comfortable as the driver’s seat. Back seat space with me in the front is a bit limited and I wouldn’t want to sit behind someone my size on a long trip. On a personal level, getting in and out of a twodoor was cool up until kids needed car seats; then it was four-door time. (Continued on page 18) Oh hey, you’re looking for the legal, right? Take a look, here it is: Vehicle(s) may be shown with optional equipment. Dealer may sell or lease for less. Limited time offers. Offers
Ironically, the time I spent in the “base” model I didn’t know that I had been deprived of luxury. This C class handled the curves and pot holes (Saskatchewan is not the only province with pot holes) of our trip from Quebec City to Chicoutimi with ease. On this trip I was paired up with Regina Chan of Autonerve, Canada’s first and so far only Chinese automotive publication both online and in normal print. This meant being able try out seating positions other than the driver’s seat.

he new C class has been a bit slow in making it across the ocean. It is just arriving at dealers now while other versions such as the AMG model will be here this fall. Other Mercedes products for 2017 are also facing some delays due to the increased scrutiny given to all brands by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This delay means that instead of Autozone having a couple of hours in three or four different C class models, I got to spend two days and over 600 kilometres in both the basic and not-so-basic 2017 C class coupe. MSRP for the C class starts at $48,100, but when you add a few of the luxuries that Benz is noted for, the price steps up to around $56,000 depending on the comforts you can’t live another moment without.

New Mercedes an awesome drive
M
(Continued from page 16) ercedes Benz has that covered as well; the new sedan will be along in a couple of months. Except for a couple of design variations to accommodate having four doors, the coupe and the sedan are the same. The big differences are under the skin, such as when you step up for the AMG versions with V8 engines with over 500 horsepower and a nine-speed G-Tronic automatic transmission. Behind the steering wheel at last! The driver’s seat may be the same as the passenger seat, but with that steering wheel in front of you and the pedals on the floor, it is at least 10 times more fun to be in. The 2.0 turbo motor (241 hp and 273 ft. lb. of torque) and the seven-speed automatic with 4-Matic AWD makes this car an awesome combination to drive. You find yourself wishing for a bit of inclement weather, just so you can test out some of the electronic driver aids because the car is so solid and so easy to drive. Our wishes were not granted, but we did see snow in June in Quebec… it was the residue of snow left over from the ski hills. On roads that were gently undulating, filled with corners with short passing zones, Chan and I found out that the car was very comfortable with good lateral support. Seat cushion length seemed perfect for Chan and a touch short for me. That put my right foot on the throttle at a slightly odd angle that took a few minutes to get used to. The C class also has a normal Mercedes throttle tip, which means you need a bit more push on the pedal at the start to make things happen. The flip side is that you have better throttle control and turbo lag is minimized. Speaking of push, we both found that when getting close to the limits, the nose would gently start to push out giving us plenty of warning that the nose was about to go away. It still meant that nearly all the tight 20 kph corners were taken at significantly higher speeds. Yes, you can take this Benz to the opera house and be totally comfortable in your tux. Just remember Mercedes has a hidden side that is best explored in a T-shirt, jeans and sneakers. This is the side that will let you set up for and carry a constant line around that corner with the suspension soaking up road imperfections. It is the side that lets you get safely by the mundane motorists on roads with short passing distances. It is the side that when you go for groceries, you are going to take the long way around… say, to Chicoutimi, PQ.
