Making music, Martin Janovsky style

Martin Janovsky arrived in Canada from Czechoslovakia more than 30 years ago. (Photo by Sandy Hutchinson)
here has always been music in the homes where Martin Janovsky has lived. Janovsky, who is considered one of Saskatoonโs most accomplished and versatile pianists, has only been surprised by one thing. He never dreamed that his events on musical stages, usually as a professional, would occur on two different continents โ Europe and North America.

Janovsky grew up in Czechoslovakia, a nation torn by political turmoil and some warfare from the Second World War onwards. It was in 19831984 that he and his wife, Jana, began applying to leave the land where they grew up. Janovsky trained at two musical institutions in Prague, the Conservatory and the Academy of Music. โEven though we were married, we were not allowed to
leave Czechoslovakia together. One could leave, the other had to stay. We caught a break at a time when Jana was visiting in France and I was playing on tour in Norway. I went to France immediately so we could begin the process of getting political asylum status,โ he said. โWe were at the Canadian consulate, making inquiries and answering all the questions. One official, recognizing that we were both musicians, asked why we wanted to leave all of this and go to Prince Albert in Saskatchewan. Personally, I didnโt have much knowledge of what
Canada was about. Jana told the consulate she had a brother in Prince Albert and thatโs where we wanted to make our future. โI couldnโt speak English at the time. I could speak my native Czechoslovakian language, a little French, was almost fluent in Russian and my education elective was German. โIt wasnโt long before we were on a flight over the Atlantic, direct from France to Winnipeg, and then came the shock of flying to Prince Albert on a Cessna, which carried only four or five passengers, and (Continued on page 7)

Signing Libby Epoch like โwinning the lotteryโ
Darren Steinke Saskatoon Express o say it was big when the University of Saskatchewan Huskies womenโs basketball team signed Moose Jaw prodigy Libby Epoch might be a bit of an understatement. โWe felt like we won the lottery, when Libby committed here,โ said Huskies head coach Lisa Thomaidis. โIโve seen her play since probably about Grade 8. โI remember hearing of this kid in Moose Jaw, and I needed to watch her play. I think she was probably playing with girls that were older than her at the time and was just really being impressed with her poise and just her basketball IQ. We worked really hard to get her here.โ The five-foot-seven point guard from Moose Jawโs Peacock Collegiate came to the Huskies after helping Canadaโs junior womenโs national team win silver at the FIBA Americas U-18 womenโs championship in July 2016 in Valdivia, Chile. Last July, she rejoined Canadaโs junior womenโs national team and helped the squad earn a bronze medal at the FIBA U-19 Womenโs Basketball World Cup in Italy. She said the chance to be a member of Canadaโs junior womenโs national team was beyond priceless. โIt was incredible,โ said Epoch. โI honestly never thought it would happen to me. โIt was a dream come true. To be able to travel to South America and Europe, it was just out of this world. I learned a lot from that, and it really helped me develop as a player.โ Epoch joined a Huskies team that had come off winning the U Sports national championship in March 2016 and graduated guards Laura Dally and Kelsey Trulsrud and forwards Dalyce Emmerson and Taya Keujer. Due to those key graduations, the Huskies were expected to go through a rebuilding year. Helping lead a young Huskies team, Epoch started out of the gate. She played

close to 32 minutes a night and averaged 8.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game. With Epoch quarterbacking the offence, the Huskies finished 15-5 in the regular season in 2016-17 and won the Canada West Conference championship. The Huskies finished sixth in the U Sports national championship tournament. On an individual front, Epoch was named to the U Sports all-rookie team. She excelled in the classroom, being named to the U Sports Academic All-Canadian team. Epoch has helped the Huskies jump out to an 8-0 start in the Canada West regularseason start and jump up to fifth in the U Sports Top 10 rankings. Epoch is averaging 7.8 points per game, 5.5 rebounds a game, 5.9 assists per game and 2.3 steals per game. Away from the court, the 19-year-old is becoming a regular when it comes to speaking on behalf of the overall Huskie Athletics program at community engagements. She handles those situations with such ease you almost forget she is still in her teens. โI guess I just got asked to do one thing, and it led to another,โ said Epoch. โIโm pretty comfortable speaking, and I hope I speak pretty well on behalf of my teammates and represent us well. โIt is really important to me to be able to be a role model for younger generations and just to show the community what we are all about, and how we can lead.โ Epoch played all sorts of sports growing up in Moose Jaw and took up basketball in Grade 2. She started to think it was possible to play basketball at higher levels when she became a member of Saskatchewanโs provincial team program in 2011. It also helped that she loved the sport. She credited her high school coach at Peacock Collegiate, Renee Verge, on being the biggest influence in helping her along in the sport. โI think my high school basketball coach was a really big mentor for me, not so much even for basketball but just for in

life in how to be a role model and how to be a leader,โ said Epoch. โThat really helped me.โ When it came time to pick a university program to play for, Epoch had a lot of reasons to lean towards the U of S. One was the fact Thomaidis, who is the head coach of Canadaโs national womenโs basketball team, was the Huskies head coach. Epoch was going to join the team at the same time junior national team teammate Summer Masikewich made her way to the Huskies. The academic offerings were a huge drawing card, but an intangible sealed her decision. โWhen I came on my visit, it was just a feeling with the girls,โ said Epoch. โIt was like one big family. โThe community supports it so well, and that was great. Of course, the coach and the coaching staff is world class, so you canโt beat that.โ Thomaidis said Epoch is coming into her own this season when it comes to pushing the play in transition. โShe is a tremendous student athlete,โ said Thomaidis. โShe checks all the boxes, when youโre grading a player. โShe is someone who is a high academic achiever and who is an excellent athlete and someone who is involved in the com-

munity and speaks well and has high moral standards and ethics. She is extremely intelligent. โYou can see that on the floor, but she is also a very high-achieving student. It is every coachโs dream to have the kind of player like she is, as a person.โ Epoch wants to play as long as she can, but said her focus is on enjoying her time with the Huskies. โIt is hard to look too far into the future when so much of the present is here at U of S,โ said Epoch. โI just want to work really hard here. If good things happen after, then I will go to that.โ (You can see more of Darren Steinkeโs work in his online blog stankssermon. blogspot.ca.)

We still have on the table the active transportation plan, which last year was pegged at well over $200 million, although it would be spread out over several years, if all goes according to plan. Letโs not forget the library board, still dreaming of a new downtown structure estimated between $80 and $100 million. Yes, I know the library sets is own budget, which is approved by council; but it is still added to our tax bill as a city-owned facility which taxpayers financially support. It was reported earlier that at yearโs end the cityโs debt would be more than $400 million. That is $400,000,000! The cityโs debt ceiling is roughly $550 million. Even with some federal money, these three projects alone will cost roughly $500 million over the ensuing years. Add to that other necessary capital spending and we could be heading to the billion-dollar debt mark. According to the 2016 census, the census metropolitan area (CMA) population is 295,095, while the cityโs population base is 246,376. It is only the cityโs population base, that being the number of people who actually live within the city boundaries, that pay property tax and, of course, not all of them pay taxes. That is a lot of debt for a small prairie city located in the heart of a stagnant provincial economy. The police budget increase looks to be about 3.25 per cent, but it doesnโt include the hiring of new officers even though our
city has the second highest crime rate in the province that boasts the highest crime rate in the country. However, it does include a new police airplane. And the province is providing $4.8 million via a grant for the city to hire 43 new officers to fight targeted causes of crime. (What do we do with these 43 officers if the provincial grant dries up?) Meanwhile, council is moving full steam ahead on a user-pay garbage collection utility in order to remove the current waste collection costs from the budget, which is good for councilโs budget dilemma. It is not so good for taxpayers who will still pay taxes that used to include waste collection, plus an additional separate fee on a utility bill. All the while the Grim Reaper of garbage wanders the landfill scything away at the $126-million cost for closing and opening another landfill. At the same time, administration is advising council there are major shortfalls to parks and bridges. Snow clearing/removal remains a hot issue for many residents together with a long list of other services and amenities. The roadway rehabilitation is an ongoing expense, and Remai Modern art gallery will continue to bleed us dry over the years to come. It would seem council got the message that taxpayers do not want their services cut. Can we get the message delivered that the boom is over, boom spending has to be curtailed, and taxpayers need relief from annual five per cent mill rate increases? ehnatyshyn@gmail.com

Expo 86 dates opened many doors
(Continued from page 1) landed on what wasnโt much better than an open field.โ That was the welcoming sight of Canada for the Janovskys. Since then, they have just let their music speak for itself. Life for the Janovsky families in Czechoslovakia was hardly kind. Their parents and grandparents saw the Germans overrun their country during the Second World War. Equally disturbing, and perhaps worse, was the 1948 series of events where the Communists arrived to join forces with the Czech socialists and confiscated businesses and farms. Janovskyโs grandfather lost his farm, which was turned into a co-operative, and was thrown in jail for five years. Janovsky was 10 years old in 1968 when the Russians came in full force, and he remembers his mother listening to the radio and crying that war was coming again. The draft age in Czechoslovakia was 18, but Janovsky didnโt have to go into the armed forces until he was 21 because he was a student. By 1982, he was out of the military services and whetted his musical appetite by playing at Alambra, a major Prague club, and getting some international contracts with big bands touring in Germany, Denmark and Norway. โMy dad, Josef, had a gift on the piano and a great ear. My brother, Peter, eventually went into business and to this day, he keeps playing cornet and guitar,โ said Janovsky, who returned to Czechoslovakia in 1991 for a visit. Once Janovsky settled in Prince Albert, he taught at music schools and then got double billing at the W.K. Restaurant, playing dinner music as a solo artist and later introducing the band, HipCheck, to the dancing crowds. Soon he was working clubs in both Prince Albert and Saskatoon. In 1986, he, Duff Robison, Mick Gratias and Brad Johnstone became the house band for a six-month stint at the Saskatchewan Pavilion at Expo 86 in Vancouver. There were chances to see international acts like Tower of Power, Miles Davis, Kool and The Gang and B.B. King, all entertainers he admired, and a chance to work with some Canadian acts for the first time. One of them was Henri Loiselle, the Saskatchewan opera singer, and after working at Expo 86, they formed a performance partnership that has continued for 30 years. Janovsky has also played the keyboard AS120405 Aaron
for the Saskatoon Fireside Singers at their Christmas concerts for more than a decade. In his first performances, the Fireside orchestra was usually three or four players, but will be up to 16 players at this yearโs concert, Christmas Memories, Dec. 21 and 22 at TCU Place. โMarilyn Whitehead has built the Christmas shows into something which is totally first class and professional. The singers rehearse well in advance, and Bonnie Nicholson, the pianist and our group leader, pulls us together just in advance of the concerts. Some are Saskatoon-trained musicians who come home for the holidays and are only too happy to help. Moving to TCU Place gave us a lot of benefits in sound and staging,โ he said. Christmas is a busy time. He just did A Christmas Classic with vocalist Trevor Wingerter at The Bassment, plays at the clubโs Pianothon on Dec. 8, and will lead his orchestra in a Jan. 13 performance, also at The Bassment. For what he calls his big band, Janovsky enlists Sheldon Corbett, Barrie Redford and Kevin Marsh on horns, Kyle Krysa, Doug Gilmour and Rich McFarlane as the rhythm section and his wife, Jana, and Kathryn Schulz as vocalists. โI do all the arrangements for the night and thereโs no better feeling than working with a big band, where all the players are so inspirational for me.โ Heโs also in the middle of a five-week stint where he and some friends play Sunday brunches at The Luther Care Village Bistro. He also has the ability to mix comedy into his routine. He also teaches in his own studio. And over the years, he has recorded four CDs with his orchestra and composed music for special events, including the 1988 opening of Saskatchewan Place and the 1989 Jeux Canada Summer Games. His two sons are also active in music. Jan, 38, works as a musician and teaches lessons in Sherwood Park, Alberta. His younger son, also named Martin, 32, works as a pianist in Saskatoon. Janovsky is proficient at anything he plays, including the standards, ragtime or Latin stylings. He considers Rhapsody in Blue, the Gershwin masterpiece, as a favourite. He can deliver the 20-minute version or he can shorten it up wherever the demand is. โAfter playing it once, Roy Sydiaha talked me into playing it at University of Saskatchewan graduation exercise. Gershwin music is dear to me. Iโm honoured to play it on any occasion.โ

Get in the Spirit of Broadway
roadwayโs Spirit of Christmas event will take place Dec. 7 in the Broadway Business Improvement District (BBID). โSpirit of Christmas is an annual event in the Broadway District with late night shopping, draw prizes, live music, caroling and Santa comes for a visit,โ said DeeAnn Mercier, executive director of BBID. โThis evening is a great time to shop local at stores and purchase from local artisans with great deals throughout the district, and itโs a time for Broadway to come together and celebrate the season.โ Santa Claus will be walking up and down Broadway Avenue handing out gift cards and presents from Broadway stores. Many businesses have specific promotions and events they will be showcasing, including a night market at One Yoga, live music at Starbucks, and free community screen-
ings of Indigenous films and digital art at the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Broadway Theatre will be featuring Vegas Vacation a Rez Xmas Story (remount) by Curtis Peeteetuce, a live comedy theatre presented by Gordon Tootoosis Nฤซkฤnฤซwin Theatre every evening from Dec. 6 through Dec. 9. Join Zula, Clare and Sihkos as they head off to Vegas for a Christmas vacation, to hopefully catch a glimpse of Tom Jones and play the biggest game of bingo ever. โBroadway is always family friendly,โ said Mercier. โSanta will be giving out gift certificates and posing for pictures with the young and young at heart, and hopefully the ice will be ready for skating behind Ecole Victoria School.โ Mercier adds that many of the wide variety of restaurants and pubs in the Broadway district will have their holiday menus available.
SPCA hopes to find a home for every pet
T
he Saskatoon SPCA has launched its 2017 Home for the Holidays campaign, but this year with a twist. Through an online video, the Saskatoon SPCA hopes to inspire Saskatonians to make the holidays merry and bright for 200 homeless pets currently waiting to find homes. โThere is no more wonderful gift to give a homeless animal than a caring family and a warm home,โ Saskatoon SPCA executive director Patricia Cameron said in a news release. โThe holidays can be a great time to adopt, since many people have time off work and school and have more time to spend with each other and with their new companion animals. โThere is a misconception that a pet is a poor choice of gift, but research shows that
pets given as a gift are actually less likely to be relinquished than pets acquired by individuals themselves. The main thing is to check with the person to ensure they want a pet and what kind of animal fits their home and lifestyle.โ Every Saskatoon SPCA pet adopted comes with four weeks of free PetPlan pet health insurance, a microchip for identification, vaccinations, and spaying or neutering. That is a value of more than $400. Animals available for adoption can be viewed at www.saskatoonspca.com. To watch the video, please visit https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ksml1uqrDZg. To sponsor, donate, or adopt, visit www. saskatoonspca.com or call 306-374-7387 to find out how you can help animals in need.
New ultrasound will help women facing cancer diagnoses Laura is a young mother of two. On Motherโs Day in 2015, she found a lump in one of her breasts. Laura went for an ultrasound and mammogram but both were inconclusive. She was sent to Saskatoon City Hospitalโs Breast Health Centre for a biopsy and learned she had a tumour. A scheduled lumpectomy became a mastectomy because the cancer had spread. Almost a year later, Laura had a second mastectomy. Following surgery, she developed an infection and contracted e coli. She spent several weeks in the hospital. Laura is now fully recovered but she wonders if things could have been better. For her and 40% of women who, like her, have denser breasts, an Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) is ideal. Thatโs why sheโs asking you to support the purchase of an ABUS through Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation. The ABUS can take an image of the entire breast in just three scans. In many cases, itโs better than a mammogram or an MRI because it images tumour tissue better. Radiologists can provide quicker, more accurate diagnoses and start effective treatment plans sooner. Thatโs crucial when dealing with cancer. Donations will be matched by Cherry Insurance By supporting the ABUS, youโre not only changing lives, youโre saving lives. Please give today. You can donate directly at SCHFdonate.com, your SGI CAnADA broker by phone at 306-655-8489 (1-800-603-4464), or in person at the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation office, next to the front entrance of the hospital. Behold: the SSO presents its 87th Messiah
Shannon Boklaschuk Saskatoon Express tโs been described as Saskatoonโs longest-running holiday tradition โ and itโs back for another year. The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will present Messiah, the Baroque-era oratorio, on Dec. 15 and 16. Composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel, it has been a holiday staple for centuries. Joining the Saskatoon Symphony Chorus at Knox United Church will be soprano Chelsea Mahan, alto Lisa Hornung, tenor Spencer McKnight and bass Matthew Pauls. โItโs fascinating to me,โ said SSO executive director Mark Turner, when asked what compels audience members to return year after year. โThereโs a line in Messiah that one of the singers gets to sing that says โBehold, I tell you a mystery.โ And every time I always think that thatโs Handel trying to give us a little โLook, Iโm going to tell you a mystery and itโs going to captivate people forever.โ โThe music is so incredibly well-written.โ Turner added that Messiah has โso many memorable moments in itโ that itโs akin to The Nutcracker or White Christmas. The Messiahโs Hallelujah Chorus is particularly well known by modern audiences. โItโs just one of those pieces that instantly makes us think of the holiday season,โ he said. Turner said 2017 marks the 87th year that the SSO will present Messiah. The two concerts will also mark the 105th year that Messiah has been performed in Saskatoon, since the first performance by a choral group took place in the city in 1913 at Third Avenue United Church. While the music and the soloists will be the same at both of the upcoming concerts, the Dec. 16 concert will have a twist:Aaron it is the sing-along Messiah event. AudiAS120413
I
ence members who wish to participate will be invited to join the SSO and the Saskatoon Symphony Chorus as part of a mass choir of about 400 voices. It will be the fourth year for the sing-along concert, and people have responded well to it in previous years. โFor the musicians, for the staff, itโs almost always our favourite concert of the entire year โ and the reason is, is because thereโs so much excitement for people who want to come and sing,โ said Turner. โItโs never as big a crowd. Itโs a slightly smaller crowd, and the crowd that does come is a mix. Thereโs some people who come to sing, and they are there to be part of the experience, and then there are people who come and watch โ because it is a full performance of Messiah,โ he said. โSo itโs remarkable because thereโs all sorts of research done about the incredible effect that singing in a choir has on us as a society. And the community and the experience and the thrill and spirit in that room is so exciting at the sing-along.โ During the sing-along concert, audience members who wish to participate will be seated near the front of the room, closer to the orchestra. The balconies and the back of the main floor will be for people who wish to view and listen rather than sing along to the music. Turner said Handelโs Messiah is performed so frequently worldwide that it is โunquestionably the most-performed piece of music ever written.โ In Saskatchewan, for example, there are two performances in Saskatoon and one in Regina. Larger cities, such as Toronto, have seven or eight different performances with multiple nights each, he said. โIt is universal,โ said Turner, noting the SSO will continue to present Messiah into the future. โThe music is too good.โ Handelโs Messiah is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Dec.
On Dec. 15 and Dec. 16 the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will present Messiah. (SSO Photo) 15 at Knox United Church, located at 838 Spadina Cres. East. The sing-along event will take place the following day, on Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $37 to $44 and can be purchased on the SSO website at saskatoonsymphony.org. The SSO is encouraging audience members to purchase their tickets early, as the event sells out.

n her column on Page 5, Tammy Robert writes about the incident in Yorkton involving a AAA Midget hockey player who was dressed down by his coach. The coach used expletive after expletive during a meeting with the player, which was recorded. The 16-yearold player and his parents unwisely held a news conference to voice their concerns with the coachโs comments. Tammy used a paragraph from the coachโs speech with both the expletives in and the expletives out. What a difference in the tone. Generally speaking, I donโt have a problem with swearing, but clearly the coach went too far. Would it be appropriate for a teacher or boss to speak this way to a student or an employee? Swearing is part of hockey culture, one big mouth on talk radio said, trying to justify the actions of the coach. The big mouth (who will go unnamed as not to promote him) talked about the kid being soft and running to his mommy and daddy with hurt feelings. His belittlement was way out of line. โข Former sports reporter/analyst Marty York, on Gregg Zaun being fired for inappropriate behaviour: โDonโt know about Zaun, but Iโll tell you this: most male pro athletes have been guilty of inappropriate behaviour toward women.โ Itโs probably part of hockey culture, right? โข From Janice Hough: โOpen note to guys planning to apologize for past sexual harassment. Weโll be a lot more likely to believe you if you do it before you get caught.โ โข From TC Chong: โRIP Jim Nabors. Your legacy lives on with Gomer Pyle Arbor Memorial

Didnโt mean to offend anyone about Shania Twain, but way too much makeup and should have dressed conservatively. Apologies.โ โข A note to the Calgary Stampeders from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: โWhen Steve Smith scored in his own net to interrupt the Edmonton Oilers dynasty, not a single player threw him under the bus.โ I am sure it was the same last week, when Kris Russell of the Oilers fired one into his own net, costing the Oilers a point or two. โข From Torben Rolfsen: โShania Twain on a dogsled? Next year Nickelback in a canoe.โ โข As much as I hate to write it, my ranking of NHL teams would have the Maple Leafs in the top five. โข Hough, on Tony Parker returning to the court last week to an ovation from Spurs fans: โI wonder if Vince Carter also sent him a text โ โWelcome back young man.โโ โข Two observations from Randy Turner of the Winnipeg Free Press, after a swap of newspapers between Torstar and Postmedia resulted in almost 300 layoffs and the closure of 34 papers: โ1. The @WinnipegNews isnโt perfect, but weโre a locally-owned independent paper
and strive every day to serve the community where we live. That matters; 2. Paul Godfrey sucks.โ โข Hough, on the Ford EcoBoost 400 NASCAR Cup Series finale having the lowest ratings in raceโs 19-year history: โMust have been all those black drivers kneeling.โ โข From Rolfsen: โI thought flopping during the World Cup draw show was a bit much.โ โข Jack Todd of the Montreal Gazette, on the Argonauts winning the Grey Cup: โJim Popp will be floating on an ego cloud tonight.โ โข I wonder if the lawn chairs for the Argos parade will remain in place for the Leafs. โข From Hough: โCongratulations to the Argonauts, winners of the CFL championship. Few sports fans think the Argos could actually compete with NFL teams, though they might be two touchdown favourites against the Browns.โ โข From Rolfsen: โPeople are excited about Tiger Woodsโ comeback, but he has to use his putter to fish the ball out of the cup.โ โข From Chong: โBest one-liner of the year courtesy of late night TV in a fake interview with Melania Trump: โWhat would be your dream job?โ Melania: โSingle mother.โโ โข This is the most exciting week in sports for me. Every four years we get to watch the best curlers in Canada compete for Olympic berths. Iโm thinking Brad Gushue and Rachel Homan would be our best two Olympic reps, but as my mom always says, curling is a slippery game.

MS. FANCY FALLS FOR MR. NOT SO ORDINARY
Dear Lianne, First of all I would like to thank you from the top, middle and bottom of my heart!! When you tried to match me with Lou, I was aghast. I was married to a CEO and you presented a guy with a run of the mill job. Initially I said NO! Your staff said not to be surprised if I got a call from you. If you remember, you did call and pointed out that you were matching hearts not careers. I thought , my goodness you didnโt
listen to me about who I wanted to meet. You explained that my history has had me dating all sorts of men who treated me as if I was beneath them. You stressed that your hope for me was to find someone who treated me as a treasure. Lou had been happily married for thirty five years. His wife passed three years ago. He speaks of her with the utmost respect. I canโt believe that I almost passed up on this amazing man. Never in my life have I been
treated like this. We talk. He cares. We listen to one another. He puts me first. He is complimentary and helps around my home. He respects my opinion. We are planning a vacation and talking about spending our lives together. My message to everyone out there is trust the matchmaker. What I was doing did not work. With your persistence, I have now met the man of my dreams. Who ever knew that this is the way it is supposed to be! I owe it all to you. โ Estelle
Dear Estelle, I love hearing stories like yours. I do remember how resistant you were to the thought of Lou. I did have to twist your arm to talk to him and Iโm sure glad you trusted my expertise. You did have a history of always looking for and dating men with titles rather than substance. You are a very attractive woman and seemed to be treated as a showboat rather than a person. I wish you and Lou all the happiness in the world. You both so deserve it.

Dear Carolyn, For the easiest garlic butter recipe, stir together 1 cup softened butter with one tbsp. garlic powder. For garlic butter with a kick, try the following recipe. Into a bowl stir together one cup softened butter, one tbsp. minced garlic, one tsp. garlic salt, one-quarter cup grated Parmesan cheese, one tsp. Your Family Christmas The hottest toys this holiday season
C
hristmas and Chanukah may be celebrated toward the end of the year, but at the annual New York Toy Fair, the season for thinking about toys begins in February. This popular convention unveils the industryโs hottest trends and toys, attracting more than 1,000 exhibitors. The Toy Fair, and recommendations by toy and game industry experts around the world, like Dr. Toy and The Toy Insider, help cement which toys are likely to end up on kidsโ holiday wish lists. For those shoppers who fell behind the curve and missed out on last yearโs break out โHatchimalโ hit, the following figure to be the most coveted items for this year of giving. โข Lego Boost: Lego continues to reinvent itself, offering add-ons to its popular building brick model. Lego Boost takes advantage of the STEM trend by enabling children to build and code any of the five models of building sets. These include a cat, robot, guitar, rover, and building machine. Or, they can use the pieces to create their own designs. The models work with an app and can be coded to make different motions and sounds. โข Melissa & Doug Scientist Role Play Costume Set: Melissa & Doug is widely recognized for its high-quality wooden
games sets and puzzles, but the company also delves into imaginative play costumes. This scientist role-play costume includes a beaker, a test tube, a lab coat, experiment cards, and other ingredients necessary to fuel interest in the sciences. It can be a welcome addition to any dress-up collection. โข Nerf N-Strike Elite: Nerf brand has been popular for decades, and the company continues to churn out popular items for boys and girls. The N-Strike Elite series has a number of incarnations to tempt sharpshooters. Nerfโs new AccuStrike line is designed to improve accuracy with specially crafted darts that sail straighter than the original darts. โข CollEGGtibles: Building upon the Hatchimal craze of last Christmas and early this year, Spin Master offers an addition to the very popular collectible toy niche. CollEGGtibles are much smaller than Hatchimals, but are equally fun. Smaller eggs hatch to reveal various colorful critters inside. Kids are apt to want to collect them all. โข Pie Face Sky High: Hasbro keeps reinventing the Pie Face game, their runaway hit from 2016, which was awarded โGame of the Yearโ by the Toy Industry Association. In the Sky High version, one
player hits a lever with a mallet, hoping to deliver their opponent a face full of pie cream. These are just a handful of the industry favorites that could be the hot picks among children for holiday gifting this year. Also, keep an eye out for FisherPrice Movi, anything Star Wars, FurReal friends, Shopkins, and much more. Learn what kids are hoping to find nestled under the tree AS120403 Aaron this holiday season.
