P.A.’s Shantel Kalika makes NASCAR debut at Wyant Raceway Darren Steinke Saskatoon Express rowing up in a racing family, Shantel Kalika always envisioned herself trying the sport at the highest levels. The 28-year-old Prince Albert product will advance her goals when the NASCAR Pinty’s Series makes its annual stop at the Wyant Group Raceway just north of Saskatoon. Kalika, who is in her eighth season racing at the local Saskatoon track, will make her debut on the NASCAR circuit, taking part in the two 125-lap main event Pinty’s Series races. She will be the first female driver from Saskatchewan to compete on the NASCAR Pinty’s Series. “The atmosphere and the excitement around it is obviously going to be huge,” said Kalika. “I just feel obviously blessed to be able to actually have the first one be at my home track. “Wyant Group Raceway is a phenomenal track. The grounds that they have there are immaculate.” The two-day race event is set for July 24-25. The action on July 24, which starts at 7 p.m., features 75-lap main event races for the local pro truck class and the sportsman class and heat races for the TA071517 Tammy

The action on July 25, starting at 6 p.m., includes the two 125-lap NASCAR races as well as a feature race from the local super late model class, which is expected to run 75 laps. The super late model race takes place in between the two NASCAR races. The Pinty’s Series is a minor league circuit that prepares drivers to compete one day at NASCAR’s top level — the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Kalika is the daughter of Ben Busch, who has been racing across Western Canada in various classes for the last 28 years. Growing up in Prince Albert, Kalika’s weekends often consisted of getting home

from school and accompanying her family to an out-of-town track on Friday nights. After a weekend of racing, the family returned home late on Sunday night, and it was back to school on Monday. These days, Busch is the crew chief on Kalika’s team. Kalika’s pit has a big family presence as her mother, Sandy Busch, and husband, Casey Kalika, are part of her pit crew. “Everything about racing has always been in my life,” said Kalika. “It is what I grew up knowing.” Kalika calls her father her hero and said he has been the biggest influence helping her along in racing. She said she wouldn’t be where she is in racing without her father.
“If I look back at every single thing that I have learned up to this point for racing, I’d have to say he is the one that taught me it,” said Kalika. “When you have a mentor like him and somebody you can trust that much, it is obviously pretty cool. “We have a really, really good relationship.” Kalika has experienced her share of success at the Wyant Group Raceway. She raced in the local pro truck class during her first seven seasons and won the class points championship in 2016. Besides the points title, Kalika was named the fan favourite driver in 2014 and 2015. (Continued on page 6)

erhaps it was because we could not imagine perching on a rocky ledge deep inside a flooded cave for 18 days. Maybe it was the youth and innocence of the trapped boys, in a Columnist remote and harsh location. Likely it was the potential of tragic death by lack of food, asphyxiation, drowning, infection or any of a myriad horrible ways to die. Ultimately, it was at least partly the colossal rescue effort that drew possibly every eye on the planet to the drama unfolding around 12 young Thai soccer players and their coach, caught underground while spelunking by a weather event in the middle, more or less, of nowhere. In the mornings at home, news of the boys was the first thing we talked about. This story had us in the grips of a great thrall, shared by, say, six or seven billion people. Each morning, for longer than two weeks, everyone everywhere was asking everyone else if they had heard anything new, about 12 boys they’d never heard of on the other side of the world. It connected us. It amazed us. It had us all cheering for the same team: the Wild Boars, the little soccer team from Thailand. Now, they’re out and recovering. I’ve never been so damned amazed in my life. What a rescue story. They got them all, and probably because of a massive international effort that showed us Earthians at our very best. Clever. Co-operative. Caring. There were 13 foreign divers who joined the five Thais in the cave. An expert Australian cave-diving medic, Richard Harris, who cancelled his holiday plans to travel to Thailand, and 17 Aussie police divers. Thirty-six U.S. rescue personal. Six rescue specialists from Beijing. And 110 Thai Navy Seal divers, including one who died, trying to figure out how to save the boys. It’s at times like this when I do not understand why we members of the human race can’t always behave so well. This coming together rescue, as with so few things, shines the brightest light on our response to adversity. We’ve also seen it happen after earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes and mine disasters. And then we turn around and fight in

What is the matter with us? What is it about beautiful humanity that goes missing at so many other times? Why do we respond with passion and compassion when nature tries to bite us, but we’re compelled to bare our teeth when another human entity comes for us, or even if we only perceive a threat? We can only love one another, work together, if there’s an exterior risk? I guess so. ****** I have to admit I was shocked when Greyhound announced last week that it would stop serving the Western Canadian provinces. Every route will be stopped, for passenger traffic and freight, in October — apart from one in B.C. And that one connects to the United States. Maybe I shouldn’t have been quite so surprised. After all, our own Saskatchewan Transportation Company was shut down in 2017 due to low ridership. That situation was a bit different, since STC was a Crown corporation; but the reasons were similar. But I was. I figured Greyhound, to the extent possible based on their routes, would pick up at least some customers from STC; and because the company tended to run buses to larger centres, it would be fine. Apparently not. I bemoan this development. Students, seniors and young women particularly are at risk without decent bus transportation service. Some will hitchhike with potentially disastrous consequences. Seniors will not get around to visit family as much, putting them at greater risk of loneliness, isolation and boredom — and those are, socially and emotionally, very bad things. Not everyone can drive. Not everyone can afford a car. Not everyone can fly to their destinations; I mean, how do you get from here to Kindersley, for example, by plane? Hire a crop duster? What can you do, though? Greyhound is a business. They have to pay employees, maintain buses, fill them with fuel. Maybe one of these smaller-vehicle services will figure out how to make it happen, faced with a complete void of paid ground transportation. Or maybe we as a society need to look at how people get around, and figure out affordable ways to keep people moving. Safely.

The Saskatoon team knew, going into the final, that they would be one of the top nine Shell Eco-marathon participants in the world. Three of those were finalists in the internal combustion engine (ICE) category, including SaskPoly’s car; three were battery/electric; and three were hydrogen fuel cell powered. The team competed in the urban concept vehicle section of the competition (the other section was prototype) which meant the cars had to be roadworthy. The qualifying rounds, though, were nerve-wracking. In the first attempt, on the 13th lap of a 15-lap race, the car’s chain broke. The team fixed it, but it happened again, on the identical lap, on the second try. They only had two attempts left, and had to nail them both to even qualify to win. After the team came together and executed a thorough check of the car, Markwart climbed in for the third attempt and made it, along with the fourth. space directly in front of the grandstand stage. Already on sale have been some group packages, one for 15 seats in a section and another for 30 seats in a section. “We want to provide an option for the concertgoers who either can’t or don’t want to stand in the long lineups. With the Johnny Reid concert last year, the lineups were really long.” If customers are in an after-party mode, especially on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances, Kuzma has another option available at the Kicking Horse Saloon, which is just north of the grandstand in an open-air licensed space. Signed for a Thursday show at 10:20 p.m. is Lisa Moen, a rising star as a Canadian singersongwriter who appeared at halftime at a Saskatchewan Rush professional lacrosse game this year. Signed for Friday are The Northern Pikes, the Saskatoon originals with Jay Semko at the helm. And in terms of who might be remembered as the ultimate party band, Doug and The Slugs will be on the saloon stage on Saturday. Carly Rae Jepsen (Wiki Photo)

(Continued from page 3) telecast of the game between the Riders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Thursday night concerts are part of the Canadian Football League’s desire to build younger audiences for their games. April Wine is this year’s classic rock act, with an Aug. 11 appearance date. The Canadian rockers invented themselves in 1969, starting hitting the charts two years later and have released 20 albums. The band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2009, and its last appearance at the Ex was in 2005. Kuzma said the challenges with acquiring grandstand talent get harder each year. Some of the concerns come with the difference with American currency, but some with the fact that acts aren’t committing as early as they once did. She said the Ex has good working agreements with agents on both sides of the border. The Ex is introducing some new ticket policies this summer. Concerts are free with regular gate admission. But for $25, people can acquire prime seating in centre grandstand sections or they can gain admittance to a standing-room only

Kalika adds “buzz” to racing event
(Continued from page 1) he is driving a Chev Monte Carlo in the local sportsman class this season and has won two of the first three main event races. Kalika is aware she is helping pave a path for more women to be involved with a traditionally male-dominated sport. And she loves interacting with her fans. “I always care,” said Kalika. “We see all the little kids that are there. I always want to go and talk to them and be able to make their kind of dreams happen.” The idea of racing on the NASCAR Pinty’s Series took root during a trip to Ontario about three years ago. She test drove a NASCAR car at one of the local tracks and put up some fast lap times. Since that time, Kalika attempted to make the logistics come together to take part in a NASCAR Pinty’s Series race by purchasing a car and acquiring sponsorships. Everything came together this season. She will participate in the Saskatoon races and the NASCAR Pinty’s Series race on July 28 at the Edmonton International Raceway in Edmonton. “Right now, I am kind of at the top of my game,” said Kalika. “We have a lot of support from our sponsors. “My family is obviously behind me — my husband and my parents. The stars were aligning. “It is obviously the highest level in racing that you can go to in Canada. It is the next step.” Matthew Shirley, manager of marketing and corporate development at Wyant Group Raceway, said it’s awesome that Kalika will make her NASCAR debut at her home track. Shirley believes Kalika’s presence will add some extra buzz to what is the annual “Super Bowl” event for the local track.
CELEBRATE
70 YEARS SASKATCHEWAN’S FIRST 24/7 365 MONITORING AND RESPONSE CENTER
Commissionaires North Saskatchewan has been providing highquality, cost effective security services to clients for more than 70 years, and have grown and adapted to meet the changing needs of Saskatchewan businesses. We are now embracing the latest technology with a Monitoring and Response Center, giving you more flexibility to manage your security risks.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER:
24 hour monitoring in real time Mobile Response team ready to be dispatched Follow your set protocols and procedures Reduce damage costs and insurance premiums Respond to false alarms Improved safety and security of your staff Protection of your assets • Building interior and/or exterior • Vehicle compounds • Warehouses • Construction sites and equipment • Parking lots and Parkades Our team of trained professionals can provide LIVE monitoring of your alarms and security cameras, and dispatch a Mobile Patrol unit to investigate suspicious activity or notify Police of crimes in progress. Theft and vandalism needlessly deplete your bottom line with unexpected loss of product or damage to your facility. Cameras alone only allow you to view what’s already taken place, but with round the clock visual monitoring of your property, criminals can be caught in the act, or stopped before damage is done. You can have peace of mind knowing Commissionaires are looking out for you and your business, where ever you need it.
This year’s races won’t be able to benefit from any extra hype of having 18-year-old phenom Cayden Lapcevich out at the track. Lapcevich won the Pinty’s title as a rookie in 2016 and finished third on the circuit last year. He won the Saskatoon stop in 2016, when it was one 250-lap race. Last year, he finished third in the first feature race and won the second feature race. The Grimsby, Ont., product couldn’t get the sponsorships and financing to run on the NASCAR Pinty’s Series this year. Shirley said Saskatoon’s NASCAR races will feature veteran D.J. Kennington, who has made at least six starts this season on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, and a number of other good drivers. The only big change from a year ago will be the fact the twin NASCAR main event races are 125 laps in length this year as opposed to 100 laps last year. Shirley doesn’t think the extra laps will make too much of a difference to how the NASCAR teams approach those races. Last year, Shirley raced in the late model main event race that occurred between the two NASCAR races. While he doesn’t plan to drive this year, Shirley thought the first run of the new format last year went off without a hitch. “I thought it went by really smoothly,” said Shirley. “I was in late models for that in between, and I thought we put on a great show. I heard nothing but good things coming from the fans regarding it.” Shirley is expecting more of the same this year. “It is going to be a good show no matter what.” (You can see more of Darren Steinke’s work in his online blog stankssermon. blogspot.ca.)
Canadian Corps of Commissionaires – Northern Saskatchewan Division is celebrating their
70th Anniversary
Commissionaires is Canada’s premier security company, offering a unique combination of integrity, experience and innovation. For more than 90 years, Commissionaires has protected people and property across Canada in the private and public sectors. Commissionaires is a private, not-for-profit Canadian company with the highest retention rate in the industry, currently employing more than 21,000 people. Commissionaires are a well-trained, diverse team of all ages, primarily composed of former military and RCMP. Commissionaires was founded in Canada in 1925 following the First World War when there was no social safety net for soldiers who, upon completion of their service, found themselves without employment. Commissionaires was created, first in Montreal, then in Toronto and Vancouver to look after these men and women and provide them with transitional or permanent jobs, primarily in the security field. In the early years, these jobs most frequently involved guarding government institutions. From 1925 to 1948, Commissionaires expanded all across Canada. There are now 15 divisions representing all the provinces of Canada and three territories.
SECURITY GUARD SERVICES
Uniformed guards can be posted at your facility day or night. Perimeter foot patrol and inter-nal building checks as scheduled or post a Commissionaire at your entrance as a concierge to monitor access control.

Eco-car meets all Shell’s tough guidelines
phase, said Esquirol. They often looked to the more experienced top teams for tips, but found that even they sometimes didn’t pass. “They were crazy good, and they just couldn’t pass the tech,” he said. The drivers also were tested for various things, including the ability to get out of the car within 10 seconds, just in case. They also had to weigh a minimum of 154 pounds or 70 kilograms. Ultimately, Team SaskPoly measured up to every guideline. The entire team went to London for the event. Shell paid for eight of them, and SaskPoly helped by sending the other three. Markwart and Esquirol said they were grateful for the help and support provided by their school and their faculty leaders. Plus, the experience in London was incredible. Everyone was smiling, helpful and co-operative, said Esquirol. “We made a lot of friends out there. It was good.” Later, he revised that view. “Awesome.”
(Continued from page 4) builder of the frame, noted that there was another special feature to the SaskPoly car. “Almost 100 per cent of the competition use a one-gear system, so our car was unique with an eight-speed transmission,” said Esquirol. “We could get off the line and up to speed relatively quickly.” The car, which travels at about 40 kilometres per hour at top speed, also had more fuel aboard that most of the vehicles with 54 millilitres; the others had in the 30 mL range. In building the car, the team learned a great deal about composite materials, the frame having been built from carbon fibre hockey sticks, and 3D printing. Markwart was skeptical about the 3D printed shell but it performed “almost flawlessly,” he said. The car also had to meet a stringent and long list of guidelines insisted upon by Shell, from the size of the door on in. If you failed any of them, “you’re going home,” he said. It was quite an achievement for their car to even make it through the testing CT071604 Carol

Titus a disturbing, adult puppet show Shannon Boklaschuk Saskatoon Express his is not a puppet show for children. That’s a message emphasized by Will Brooks, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan’s artistic producer, about the festival’s new show Titus A. puppet revenge. The production is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy Titus Andronicus and was created in partnership with puppet builders Crispi Lord and Kristi Friday of Stumped Productions. With direction and production design by Brooks, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan is billing the show as “the most violent and bloody tragedy every performed at our festival,” noting dismemberment, disembowelment and cannibalism are brought to the stage using carefully crafted rod puppets in a small tent in a corner of the festival site. Since puppets are the focus, there was the potential to be silly and ridiculous with the show – but the team went in a totally different direction, said Brooks, who describes the story of Titus as “all about the cycle of war and the cycle of revenge.” “In the end, we decided to do a version that’s much more adult and disturbing and sort of really poignant in terms of contemporary politics and that kind of thing,” he said. Brooks said Lord and Friday – who are well known for their work with Wide Open Children’s Theatre – had been talking about doing a puppet version of Titus Adronicus for about 18 years. Brooks had also wanted to do a puppet version of the play when he took on the artistic producer role at Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan. “It was sort of this really weird kind of kismet thing,” he said. “So we ended up getting

together and realizing that neither of us could really figure it out on our own but, if we did it together, we probably could – and it’s worked out really well.” Brooks said Lord and Friday have been building the puppets for two years. In total, the show features 45 puppets and numerous puppeteers, including Friday, Jenna Berenbaum, Sarah Bergbusch, Mackenzie Dawson, Carol Greyeyes and Kenn McLeod. Brooks describes Titus as a “beautiful play” that is also “violent and horrible and kind of ridiculous at points.” “It’s this really sad commentary on what people do to each other and how we just keep hurting each other back. We can’t seem to stop doing that.” The puppet show includes violence, sexual violence and sexual content and is recommended for ages 16 and up. Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan has posted a warning on its website that states the show “may trigger deep emotional responses due to the subject matter as well as the dynamic and vivid nature of puppetry.” “There’s a lot of death and a lot of violence. There’s also a sexual assault right in the middle. It’s a hard-to-watch piece,” said Brooks. “I think it’s going to be quite painful for people, and certainly anybody who has issues with those trigger warnings probably doesn’t want to watch it in the first place,” he added. “It’s not a play that takes you through a journey and then leaves you in a hopeful place and tells you the world’s going to be OK.” Titus A. puppet revenge opened on July 12 and runs until Aug. 19. festival runs July 19–22. The 2018 lineup includes more than two dozen groups, including well-known and much-loved bands such as The Sadies, The Garrys, Big Dave McLean and many more. Also on the bill is The Missing Children’s Choir, a Saskatoon band featuring Troy Hudson (vocals, guitar), Jay Metheral (bass, vocals), Peter Abonyi (guitar, vocals), Guy Perrin (guitar, vocals) and Fabian Minnema (drums, vocals). The group has been together for about a year and describes its sound as “honest, simple folk and roll.” Minnema said Ness Creek “is a great place to introduce new songs and ideas to people” and to “get in touch with other musicians and other artists.” “Everyone is happy, and happy to listen and enjoy,” he said. “The best part of Ness Creek for us is the fact that it’s safe for everyone; everyone looks out for each other and it’s nice to be able to stroll around at any time of the day or night and feel welcome – and the fish tacos.” Minnema believes the audience will respond well to The Missing Children’s Choir because the band has a lot of energy and that energy is “contagious.” “Troy’s lyrics are interesting and humorous, so people will want to listen to the story. And, with all our influences musically, it’ll be hard to stand still through the hillbilly boogie-woogie we bring in our show.” For more information about the Ness Creek Music Festival, go online to nesscreekmusicfestival.com. ***** If you’re looking for entertainment that’s closer to home, Saskatoon’s annual A Taste of Saskatchewan festival is back for its 23rd year. The food festival will run July 17–22 in Kiwanis Park and will feature 30 local restaurants serving up some of their favourite dishes. As well, A Taste of Saskatchewan has a lineup of more than 55 bands and performers offering country, rock, reggae, salsa, jazz, pop and Celtic music. In addition, there will be daily chef competitions and demonstrations. The Western Canadian Watercross Association’s jet ski racing is also returning to the South Saskatchewan River in front of Kiwanis Park on July 21 and 22, as is the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Masters. The elite basketball event was a big hit last year and will take place in conjunction with A Taste of Saskatchewan in the city’s downtown area, just one block away from the food festival site. For the past 10 years, A Taste of Saskatchewan has attracted more than 100,000 visitors annually. For more information about the event, visit the festival website at tasteofsaskatchewan.ca.

U of S graduate lands role in The Handmaid’s Tale
A
By Shannon Boklaschuk University of Saskatchewan alumna who recently appeared in The Handmaid’s Tale describes working on the hit television show as “amazing.” Alana Pancyr, who studied in the College of Arts and Science’s Department of Drama, played the character Ofwyatt in the first episode of the show’s second season. It was originally released on April 25, 2018. “She has a really rebellious back story,” said Pancyr (BFA’13) of the fictional character. “I don’t want to say too much to spoil anything, but she basically serves as an example of what happens if you rebel.” The Handsmaid’s Tale is a highly acclaimed show based on the best-selling dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. The plot depicts a totalitarian society of the future that forces the handmaids—fertile women—into servitude. In the episode in which Pancyr appeared, the pregnant handmaid Ofwyatt is imprisoned and shackled. The Hulu show stars Elisabeth Moss, who received the award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series at the 2017 Emmys. In total, The Handmaid’s Tale was nominated for 13 awards and received eight Emmys, including the award for outstanding drama series. Other stars who have appeared in the show in recurring roles include Joseph Fiennes, Alexis Bledel, Max Minghella and Samira Wiley, with guest appearances from Marisa Tomei, Clea DuVall and Oprah Winfrey, among others. Pancyr, who was born and raised in Saskatoon, said she was “over the moon” when she found out she would have a role in The Handmaid’s Tale. “I was pinned by casting and my agent and I were waiting a week to hear back— TA071606 Tammy
this was the same week the show won so many Emmys. I wasn’t sure the role was mine until costuming sent me an email to set up a fitting,” she said. Pancyr said working on the show was an amazing experience—“probably my best day on set to date.” “When I was getting my makeup done, Elisabeth Moss swung by to introduce herself; I couldn’t help thinking how nice that was,” said Pancyr. “It’s another world working on a show like that; they wanted rain outside the windows, so every time they called action the rain would pour down the glass. Everything becomes totally real; I got to work with a great costuming and prosthetics team. Also the director, Mike Barker, has been one of my favourites to work with yet. We got a quick rehearsal before shooting and it was thrilling to get introduced to the set, her (Ofwyatt’s) bed, her treadmill and the idea of her captivity. “I was really locked into my chains, but they were so on the ball about unlocking me between takes. Despite the fact that the show looks very unforgiving, it was a very comfortable day on set. I also got to work with two talented, kind and generous Emmy Award-winning actresses, Elisabeth Moss and Ann Dowd, who are both incredible, so I was pretty thrilled when I went home that day. It also just made me love acting all the more. Every time I get to be on set and they call ‘action’ and I get to perform, there is no greater feeling for me.” It certainly seems Moss believes the future is bright for Pancyr. Moss tweeted to Pancyr after The Handmaid’s Tale episode was shot, stating: “Your performance in the show was so brilliant and we all admire you very much for sharing that brilliance with us. Look forward to watching your career flourish!”

Pancyr’s acting career first started to bloom at the U of S. She looks back on her time at the U of S with fondness, noting her undergraduate training gave her the confidence to move to Toronto and “try taking acting on as a real job.” “My professors were really excellent
and taught dedication to your craft, which is what you need to sustain yourself. They also always went above and beyond, often taking time out of their regular hours to answer my questions as I prepared myself to go,” said Pancyr. (Continued on page 12)
I LOVE HIM BUT NOT HIS DRINKING
Dear Lianne, I have been with my live-in boyfriend for the past 5 years. I love most of him so very much. When he drinks he becomes someone I don’t like nor know. He says the most vulgar things, embarrasses me and makes me hate him. He is awesome unless he has booze. I’m not living my life like this anymore. I’m in my 50’s and I know pickings are slim and we actually have a perfect life
until he starts drinking. It isn’t an everyday thing it is just each time he has one drink it ends up being 12 drinks and a guy I don’t want to know. How can I get Pete to stop drinking? – Rosemary Dear Rosemary In life there are certain situations you can control and others that you can not. In this situation you can control what you will tolerate and what you will not. Pete sounds like a classic
alcoholic who is a Jekyll and Hyde type when he is drinking. You can not get him to stop drinking. That will need to be his choice. The question to ask yourself is, will you tolerate this? The answer is either yes or no. If your answer is yes you will tolerate this then you know what to expect. If the answer is no then there are some steps you will want to consider. You can seek out an Al-Anon support group to help you deal with life with an
alcoholic. You can let Pete know you will no longer tolerate his drinking and need an answer from him as to what he intends to do about it. If he is unwilling to address the issues you will need to start a plan to separate. I would suggest speaking to a lawyer. Yes, you are a lady in her fifties and competition in the dating world is out there but that should NEVER be a reason to stay in a dysfunctional relationship.

were to follow Spadina all the way down to the Mendel. Yes, we had forgotten that a festival was on and parts of Spadina were closed. The detour would take them down Fourth Avenue and smack into onelane traffic and cordoned-off bike lanes. However, if you were smart enough to convocate from our university, you should have been smart enough to wend your way through the maze. Although the main arteries seemed in good shape, driving in the residential areas looking for old haunts drew commentary on the poor condition of many of our residential streets. And traffic flow, along with finding parking downtown, wasn’t easy, especially with festivals happening. But it does make me wonder what will happen to retail businesses when either First or Third Avenue is converted into bus-only lanes, further slowing traffic and causing more loss of parking. Or when Idylwyld forfeits a traffic lane to a bike lane. Every retailer knows that customer convenience is essential to support a thriving business and customer convenience seems not to be a top priority for today’s city gurus. Of course, as we “old-timers” tend to do, taxes were discussed and eyebrows raised when comparisons were made between our property taxes and those of other large cities. I didn’t know if this was because of an economy of scale or better management, but each of those cities offered about the same services as we get and seemingly at a better price. All in all, the city looks pretty good and it was a good exercise as a resident to step back and look at our city from a visitor’s perspective. Aside from the city centre events we have stadiums, the auditorium, museums, and the Forestry Farm and Zoo to name but a few. For the best part we have many of the amenities of a big city but still maintain the charm and warmth of a small town. ehnatyshyn@gmail.com AS071607 Aaron
Pancyr found passion for acting at U of S
(Continued from page 10) “The work I did in those (undergraduate) years really taught me to respect myself as an artist and take my work personally but also professionally. The work I did was mainly in theatre, but I found a pretty seamless transfer to film after my studies. I have had to shift more with time, since the film industry just works at a much faster pace.” Pancyr said moving to Toronto was “a bit of a learning curve” for her and there was definitely an adjustment period. However, artistic communities “are much the same wherever you go—supportive and welcoming,” she said. “I was lucky to fall in with a great group of actors and acting coaches who took me under their wing. It’s a lot of running around, and failing and getting back up,” she said. “The city is expensive, so keeping yourself afloat while staying open for 24-hour notice of auditions from your agent and casting can be a challenge. I’ve sort of found my way now and a balance, but it took a few years.” Pancyr encourages other artists to “dream big” and find the strength to pursue what they love. She knew acting was her passion as a student at the U of S, where she appeared in Greystone Theatre productions such as The Love of the Nightingale. “There was nothing better than spending my whole day studying acting, voice and movement and then putting it into practice every night in a show for a month,” she said. “I loved that lifestyle; that’s why I knew I could do this the rest of my life.” (Shannon Boklaschuk is a communications coordinator in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan).

2018 Honda Touring Accord
I
JW071605 James
2018 Honda Touring Accord a perfect fit
Charles Renny can’t say ignore all the other Accord models. But after driving the Touring version with the 2.0 litre four, I found a car that fits my body size and my attitudes nearly perfectly. The Touring 2.0 version is at the top of the heap and goes for slightly more than $40,000, including freight and dealer prep. If you want an extended factory warranty or a trim protection plan, the sticker price will go up. Before I go any further you should know that my mother had a first generation Accord for many years and that when the Saskatchewan government decided that I was old enough to terrorize the streets of Saskatoon, this was my set of wheels! When I drove that car, I really got to drive it. The handling was so much better than any of the Detroit iron that it became a bit of fun to tempt others of my age to try and follow me around a corner. Getting in and driving the 2.0 T was like a flashback. Yes, there were plenty of differences, starting with the size. This 10th generation Accord is cavernous when compared to the original, but quite average in today’s mid-sized car world. The Accord is distinctive without being obvious. A casual observer may find a similarity in likeness to various BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi models. The interior is all Honda with a large, fully electronic instrument cluster out front, a centre stack that holds all the Stereo/ HVAC controls and a console that succumbs to modern driving attitudes by having a couple of cup holders in it as well as (gasping sounds) the push button controls for the automatic. Adjustability of the driver’s 12-way power seat with memory was effortless. It took just a few seconds to get myself into a comfortable driving position. The passenger seat took even less time since it is a four-way power adjustable seat without memory. Here is my one serious complaint about the 2.0 touring. My wife hated the lack of adjustability in the seat. If she isn’t happy, the car isn’t going to make it to my driveway. For the dollars that it would cost, Honda should at least offer this as an option and find out what the take rate would be. I bet it would be higher than they think. Since I make the payments, back seat space isn’t really a concern to me, but my tall and skinny son says it is fine. In addition, putting in a child seat and therefore my grandson was reasonably easy. I was able to do the twisting and manoeuvering to get him into his seat without the need for a chiropractor. Trunk space is close to cavernous, swallowing a couple of hockey bags with only a slight bit of effort. This would indicate that there is enough room for the necessary baggage that accompanies a two-year-old. Back at the other end and in the car by myself, ready to put the DOHC, i-VTEC, turbocharged four (252 hp and 273 lb.ft. of torque) and the 10-speed automatic through their paces, the grin started to get bigger. If you leave the transmission in normal mode, shifts are done “normally” and at reasonable rpm. There is a bit of turbo lag coming off a start, but once on the move, shifting is soft with you barely noticing the move to the next gear. Select ECO mode and the shifts are still soft, but occur at lower engine speeds. ECO mode, depending on your driving style can save up to 10 per cent on in-town fuel economy according to estimates. Activating the “sport” button changes the whole demeanour of the Accord. Shifts are controlled with the steering mounted paddle shifters. The actual shifts are very crisp and quite noticeable. Steering seems to become a bit more precise as does throttle control. The driver’s seat does hold you in place so that the new found cornering speeds are still comfortable if somewhat in excess of the speed limit. Stopping ability is still the same: impressive. The large four wheel discs provide plenty of stopping power and haul the Accord down faster than you think while maintaining a great pedal feel. The chassis is stiff enough that there is no darting or weaving under really hard braking, which makes for some impressive late braking before corners.
