SESSION DESCRIPTIONS SESSION OPTIONS Saturday, November 2 Session 102

Session 203

Join us for a Rise & Shine Yoga class featuring variations of Sun Salutations. Sun Salutations match your inhalations and exhalations with the movement of your body, you connect to the rhythm of your breath and develop your inner focus, a perfect way to start your day! The class will be co-taught by Shirley Berthelet and Leanne Parsons of BreatheMoveBe.

So many of us have become disconnected from our bodies, and run on ‘auto pilot’ - it’s time to reconnect and rediscover the joy of movement! In this workshop, Janelle will speak about her journey from living with restriction and rigidity to flexibility and flow, and how this has influenced the way she now approaches movement and leads classes. As Nia has been an integral part of this shift, she will lead participants through a Nia class, which incorporates the energies of martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. This class is meant to free your spirit, focus your mind, and stir your emotions, all while having fun in ‘YOUR body’s way!’

As Leaders in the fitness industry, we impact members, other instructors and even those we just come in contact with for a moment. How do you influence people around you? What light do you want to build, share and leave? How do you maximize your impact?

Session 201

Session: Noodle RX (Shallow/intermediate pool) Time: 9:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. Presenter: Jenni Lynn Patterson-LaCour

This low-impact noodle workout will rotate through a series of anchored and grounded lower body movements that challenge the legs without impact on the joints, as well as explore various body positions and exercises that target the upper body and core using a noodle.

Session 202

Session: Engage Your Core Time: 9:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. Presenter: Lynne Skilton-Hayes

The core is all the joints and muscle groups between our neck and knees. I think we can agree that when many instructors or trainers’ cue ‘engage your core’ they mean engage your torso muscles or abdominals. By cueing this way, we are neglecting to cue key positioning for the shoulder girdle and pelvic girdle – key players in the core in addition to our torso muscles. So, are we confusing our students as to what the core really is? This workshop is designed to fine tune your cueing of ‘the core’ and fill your toolbox with a load of multiplanar exercises that effectively and specifically target the shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle and everything in between.

Session: Reconnecting with Our Bodies Time: 9:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. Presenter: Janelle Fettes

Session 204

Session: Best of Social Media in the Fitness Industry (Lecture) Time: 9:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. Presenter: Cheslea Champagne

Backed by recent research, case studies and guidance, this session covers all the top tricks and hacks for getting the most out of Instagram, Facebook and more. Discover the best new features on each Platform, best times to post, best content for engagement, best strategies for follower growth, best hashtag hacks, best idea for attracting leads and sales, best time-saving tricks and more!

Session 301

Session: S/WET Deep (Deep Pool) Time: 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Presenter: Jenni Lynn Patterson-LaCour

Take deep-water exercise to another level with S’WET Deep. Learn to incorporate Pilates, Tabata, Boot Camp, core strengthening, water running and more in your deep end to get students working harder with no impact to their joints.

Session 302

Session: Urban Poling Time: 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Presenter: Jessica Lewgood

Get Moving with Urban Poling! Personal trainers, physiotherapists, activity coordinators and fitness enthusiasts (and their clients) love Canada’s #1 Nordic Walking Poles! Urban Poling offers two styles of poling to meet everyone’s needs! Get a sneak peak of how Urban Poling is a fun fitness activity for individuals of all ages and fitness levels and how ACTIVATOR poles are being used extensively in all continuums of health care!

Session 303 Session: Lighting up the Butt Time: 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Presenter: Suzette O’Byrne

While Gluteal Amnesia (or ‘dead butt syndrome’) may sound like a spell that Harry Potter learned at Hogwarts, it’s a very real condition—and often prevalent these days, thanks to our sedentary lifestyles, jobs that tie us to a desk or hamstring heavy exercise like running. This condition happens when the gluteal

muscles become lengthened and desensitized and won’t generate much force when you try to engage them. This workshop will focus on exercises and muscle balancing that will restart and light up the gluteus muscles. Finish with some releasing poses to ensure you also know how to butt out.

Session 304

Session: Yoga for Athletes (Yfa) Time: 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Presenter: Shirley Berthelet and Leanne Parsons

YfA applies the practice of yoga to an athlete’s anatomy using the practice as a tool to complement the student’s sports and athletic experience. A yoga practice designed around the specific issues of an athlete brings balance and symmetry to their bodies-builds awareness and is an integrated approach to strength, flexibility and focus. YfA classes and workshops will concentrate on the application of the third and fourth limbs, Asana (postures) and Pranayama (breath awareness and control). YfA answers the questions; How does yoga fit into an athlete’s training program? What are the benefits of a yoga practice to athletes?

Lunch Break and Fitness Fair Time: 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Session 402

Session: Kettlebell Swing Clinic Time: 2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Presenter: Jodi Barrett

Join Kettlebell Kickboxing Canada as we discuss the importance of the hip hinge and how to properly engage the glutes and how it benefits your back during many activities. As most equipment, when not properly used can cause injury, one of the most misused, misunderstood and most efficient and effective training tool is the kettlebell. Join us today to learn how to properly execute the kettlebell swing, which is beloved for its hinge. We will not only learn how to execute a proper Full Mobility Swing, we will look at the most common faults and fixes!

Session 403

Session: Load Up Your Step Time: 2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Presenter: Lynne Skilton-Hayes

Experience this step interval format designed to challenge your cardiovascular system and the strength and endurance of the lower body. Easy to follow athletic step combinations with intervals of lower body strength exercises creates a total lower body blast of a workout. Return to your club with a Monday morning ready class that will give your classes an intensity boost and give your participants the results they crave. You’ll walk away (not easily!) with loads of ideas that can be applied to your current muscle conditioning or step classes.

Session 404

Session: Keiser C3 – Create, Coach, Cycle Time: 2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Presenter: Suzette O’Byrne

Knowing how to put together a successful class takes new ideas and a fresh approach. In this session, learn how to create interesting ride profiles, discover tips on playlist selections and more importantly, uncover training methods on how to ‘coach’ your riders to individual success. Empower yourself and your rider’s with coaching and training skills that will take your rides beyond the basic.

Session 405

Session: Nutrition - “From Restriction & Rigidity to Flexibility & Freedom - Finding Peace with Food & Our Bodies” (Lecture) Time: 2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Presenter: Janelle Fettes

Today, maybe more than ever, the simple act of eating can be confusing and overwhelming. We have been taught to fear certain foods, and told that following a specific set of rules will be the answer to everything we desire, including the ‘perfect body’, and therefore, the ‘perfect life’. Janelle Fettes, a dietitian who focuses on positive body image and intuitive eating, will bring us back to simplicity.

She will share about her own personal journey living with food obsession, eating disorders, and body image distortion, and how she was able to heal these relationships. Janelle will discuss the current science around diets, weight, health, and she will encourage participants to assess their own personal and business practices with this new knowledge in mind. Be ready to shift the way you look at food, health and body size!

Afternoon Break and Fitness Fair Time: 3:15 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Session 501

(Ski, Jack, Tuck, Kick, Hop/Levels/Impact Variations). Work together in teams to brainstorm on how to build the best class for your wave warriors!

Session 502

Session: Stretch, Lengthen, Release Time: 3:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. Presenter: Suzette O’Byrne

These three components are not often integrated together and can lead to minimal benefits, injuries or simple soreness. Investigate the current research on stretching and how to functionally incorporate it into your classes. Learn simple techniques to help your participants feel open, balanced and relaxed without the injuries and delayed onset of muscle soreness.

Session 503

Session: Tabata GX!! Time: 3:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. Presenter: Laurie Idema-Wood

More is not better! Better is better! Stuck in a training or weight loss plateau? This is for you! Boost your metabolism, maximize results and transform your body and lifestyle. Bring your sweat towel, yoga mat, and water bottle. This class is a game changer.

Session 504

Session: H.I.I.T. the Rhythm Ride (Cycle) Time: 3:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. Presenter: Lynne Skilton-Hayes

Do your participants work as hard as they should be in a H.I.I.T. class? Many clubs still don’t have computers on the bikes, so without the feedback right in front of them, how do your participants know they are working as hard as they need to? Learn how to get the most out of your students by learning to use music as a tool rather than just having it play in the background. You’ll work through H.I.I.T. drills and lots of different type of cueing/coaching designed to challenge your participants and thus, enhance the results they get from your cycle classes.

Join this Chair Yoga session and discover how you can combine these methods and poses to all your exercise classes.
