Dear Fitness Leaders! On behalf of the 2016 SaskFit Committee, I would like to invite you to an energetic weekend of professional development. As always, we strive to bring you some of the industry’s top presenters. This year’s Conference brings you a variety of workshops from innovative presenters in the areas of core training, HIIT, cycling, nutrition, aquatics, older adult and much more. Helen Vanderburg will kick off the event with a Fusion Fitness PreConference on Friday and deliver the Keynote Address ‘Fuel your Passion’ on Saturday morning. In addition, we are excited to host a full day Tether training for our Aquatic leaders on Sunday. I would like to profoundly thank our sponsors, volunteers, as well as the wonderful SPRA staff who without their continued support we would not be able to continue offering this amazing Conference. SUNDAY NOVEMBER 6, 2016 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. P5 - Aquatic Tether Training Course Presenter: Judy Cudrak

The Aquatic Tether Training Course is designed to complement the SPRA Aquatic Exercise Specialty certification. Tethering is an aquatic program that allows participants to hitch onto a stable object, such as a lane rope, to create a form of dynamic resistance offering an environment where intensity meets simplicity. This course will be dedicated to all tethering formats, including both a general and a deep water running approach. Leaders will be introduced to tethering movements and concepts that will appeal to a variety of aquatic exercise groups. This training will educate, inspire and reveal an easy to follow formula that will leave your participants feeling challenged and invigorated (a manual and tether is included with the course). This course was developed by the Provincial Fitness Unit of Alberta. Note: This is not a certification course.

Using the principles of water and current research, learn how to create a safe and appropriate cardiovascular shallow water workout that utilizes no equipment.

102 - Hoop Play Presenter: Katelyn Selanders

Hoop Play is a safe, simple, low-impact and high-intensity fitness program that inspires participants to feel good in the body they have right now! Hooping burns as many calories as running (400+ an hour) and is comparable to group bootcamp in terms of heartrate and oxygen consumption (American Council on Exercise). As a bonus, all of the moves target functional core strength, balance and stability while challenging mental stamina! In this class, we’ll use handcrafted adult fitness hoops from Solstice Hoop Play to get a full body workout, and participants will learn a variety of Hoop Play moves.

103 - Step it up! Presenter: Kristen Cutting

Think step was just an ‘80’s thing? Step is a great way to tone your lower body, build cardiovascular endurance and learn some fun and effective choreography! Join Kristen for an energizing and fun workout to start your day!

104 - Rein in the Pain: Moving through Chronic Pain Workshop Presenter: Dr. Nancy Guyurcsik and Dr. Susan Tupper

Over 22% of the SK population suffers from chronic non-cancer pain. This number represents a significant audience who require unique approaches to help them begin and maintain an exercise program. A University of Saskatchewan and Saskatoon Health Region research team has been investigating how to support those with chronic pain to begin or maintain physical activity. Key findings of this research were the need to work directly with fitness providers to develop materials and training to: (a) support chronic pain self-management during physical activity and (b) help people with chronic pain stick with being regularly active.

In this session, we will share the findings of our research and seek your input on: ■ The physiology behind pain and the role of physical activity ■ The psychological tools that people need to be regularly active with pain ■ How fitness leaders can provide quality and safe environments for people with pain and foster pain self-management during physical activity ■ Next steps in terms of potential training and education for fitness leaders Help us to determine the best training and education that will assist you to enable chronic pain participant to be active.

105 - Group Cycle: Refresh and Share Presenter: Mimi Lodoen

This session includes a quick refresh on bike set-up, postural and safety cues and setting the tone for the class. Come prepared to share your favorite cycling drill with the rest of the group. Those who are interested will have approximately 3 minutes (time permitting) to share how they incorporate the drill in their own classes. Discover how to integrate weight-bearing aerobic movement patterns with functional strength movement patterns to create a total body, all-inclusive conditioning class that helps active boomers defy the ageing process by strengthening heart and muscles, boosting metabolism, building bone density, enhancing mind-body connection and much more. 204 - PiYo LIVE Presenter: Jacqueline Tuffs

PiYo® LIVE combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility of flowing yoga movements. Stepping out on your own and building a business is both exciting and frightening at the same time. With solid planning, preparation and practice you can take away the fear and focus on what you need to accomplish. In this workshop you will learn the levels of the business development pyramid. Get practical ideas within each stage of business development. Answer key questions to build your business and begin to develop and write your business plan.

Are all your deep water classes looking the same? Could your participants perform your class without you? This exciting workshop will help you infuse new energy and challenge to your deep water classes. Come prepared to try new drills, intervals and races to suit every level and learn how to effectively lead a class with limited pool space.

303 - Body Force Presenter: Michelle Felzmann

No equipment, no problem! Body Force is designed to produce high intensity training through exercises using only your body weight. Exercises are sequenced together to get your body to work as one unit through all planes of motion. Working through total body exercises is the most efficient and effective way to train. Learn how to train hard with just your body!

304 - Booming Opportunity: Motivating Older Adults to be More Active (Lecture) Presenter: Maureen Hagan

Fitness and physical activity feels good at any age but less than 20 percent of the North American population exercises enough to reap the benefits associated with regular physical activity and this statistic declines with age. Every day for the next 17 years, 10,000 Baby Boomers will turn 65, the 'senior' population will double and the 'oldest old' (85+) will become the most rapidly growing segment of the elderly population. Motivating this population will require personal trainers, group exercise instructors and fitness professionals in general to re-look at how they program, market and advertise, sell and service this growing segment of the population. Seven significant principles of training will be presented along with a case study from one of the top 'age-friendly' cities in Canada.

A lot can happen in a minute. Join this workshop and find out how affecting a minute of training can be when you use the ‘on the minute’ HIIT training technique. This workshop builds in personal, partner and team challenge to energize your high intensity training workshops. Come away with fun new exercises to inspire your clients.

Building a functionally strong body for the best years of a persons' life requires you to train muscles with purpose for movement that matters. Training muscles for performance in daily activities, both routine and unexpected means that the strength gained will be helpful for protecting the body form age-related loss of strength, function and energy. In this session, you will learn about training principles based on a pyramid of training followed by a workout that will introduce you to functionally designed exercise progressions that will serve both a group exercise instructor or personal trainer's needs. Maureen will share her secret weapons to being in the best shape of her life at mid-50, so whether you're a boomer or want to get a head start on preserving your youthfulness, be sure to come out and learn these training principles and healthy aging strategies

High Intensity Interval Training has found its way into every workout modality. Here we explore why these training systems show proven results and how to fold them into your indoor cycling rides. Express classes are what’s happening, but step in 30 minutes can be challenging to teach, especially if you love choreography. Learn different strategies to create fun, choreographed 30 minute step classes that will wow your participants.

503 - All Body Conditioning - Back to the Basics Presenter: Maureen Hagan

The best exercise programs do not need to be complicated to be effective. They just need to be built executing the fundamental principles of exercise utilizing body weight, primal movements and a functional and progressive approach. Maureen will share ten of her favorite all body conditioning exercise sequences that provide you with all body conditioning workout appropriate for all levels of participants. This session will provide both new and seasoned instructors with a refreshing overview of effective training principles and exercise progressions.


504 - The Symmetry of Cycling Presenter: Judy Cudrak

Stand up, sit down, go fast, go slow…what creates an effective, safe class? In this workshop, we will examine the newest research on cycling tempos and alignment and create cycling drills based on physiology, symmetry and safety. Be prepared to cycle and sweat, while coming away with new drills to motivate your class!

505 - Tools to Optimize Nutritional Health While Maintaining Pleasure in Food (Repeat session) Presenter: Brooke Bulloch, RD

Eating well is not just about ensuring we get the right balance of whole foods - most of us know we need to eat more fresh vegetables and fruit! A huge part of eating well is understanding our relationship with food, recognizing barriers that make it difficult to eat well, and gaining insight as to why and how we eat. This short presentation will have participants recognize barriers around food and healthful eating, understand how the food environment might be affecting why you eat (ie. what drives your food choices), as well as understanding how you eat with discussion around mindless versus mindful eating. Finally, Brooke will cover a few tips on what to include as part of a healthful way of eating. Hint: it’s what to make room for as opposed to a growing list of ‘bad’ foods to avoid!

No matter what age you are at some time in your life, more than 80 percent of the population will experience back pain and or injury. The risk for chronic back pain increases as you age - find out why. Learn how to observe ‘postural types’ and how to help correct postural faults and imbalances with exercises that improve mobility, stability and functional strength that will ultimately lead to better posture and a healthy back long term. Discover a practical training approach for developing a better back's program, fitness class or personal training exercise repertoire adaptable for all ages.

602 - True Sculpt Presenter: Michelle Felzmann

HIIT is all the rage right now! But what about total body conditioning and all its benefits? True Sculpt will bring back the focus on a full body workout without the pain! Use the music to drive the program and learn how to combine exercises to transition easily from one to the next to keep the flow and constant workout. Instead of killing yourself with HIIT, work hard and enjoy a full body conditioning class.

603 - POWFit Presenter: Brandy-Lee Maxie

POWFit is Powwow inspired fitness that incorporates different dance styles and moves into a fun and safe fitness routine. Take the spirit of the Powwow and share it through fitness, while also respecting the sacredness of ceremonial dances. Focus is on contemporary Powwow dance styles.

Do you lead Older Adult fitness classes or would like to make your regular group fitness classes more fun? Are you feeling like they have become dull and boring? In this interactive session we will look at a variety of functional movements, patterns and exercises that will challenge your participants mentally and physically. We will use a variety of inexpensive equipment that will add some ZIP to your fitness classes.

702 - Step to Strength Presenter: Michelle Felzmann

Revive your step workout! By integrating challenging strength exercises to rev up your intensity you will create a workout that is beyond boring! Your participants won’t have time to look at the clock! This session will take you through intervals of challenging yet attainable choreography and intense body weight exercises.

703 - ‘Length and Strength’ – Can You have the Best of Both Worlds Presenter: Jana Danielson

What if you could create an experience for your participants in a class or personal training session that gave them improved joint range of motion, organized spinal movements, flexibility, core strength (including pelvic floor focus), posture and strength? Seem too good to be true? In this session, we will focus on the magic of eccentric muscular movements, Jana will explain and have you experience this in your own body so you can get it into the bodies of your participants.

The perfect way to wind up a great weekend of fitness. Stretch out your sore muscles while you center your body and mind with an all level yoga class. Namaste.


Session Presenters

Brandy-Lee Maxie

Brandy-Lee is from the Whitebear First Nations and has created the Ab Original Health and Fitness magazine, of which the main focus is Indigenous communities. She is the creator of POWFit, a full body fitness workout, to create a niche in the fitness industry for Indigenous fitness leaders and delivers POWFit to facilities across Canada. Licensed POWFit trainers are currently being trained in Winnipeg, Newfoundland and Saskatchewan.

Brooke Bulloch, RD

Brooke Bulloch is a Registered Dietitian and owner of Food To Fit, a nutrition consulting company in Saskatoon. Brooke earned a B.Sc. (Nutrition) from the University of Saskatchewan. Her experience base ranges from acute care, community health, population health promotion, and long term care within Saskatoon Health Region and she has been in private practice for 4 years. Brooke and her team of dietitians, strive to deliver a practical, holistic nutrition practice with focus on sustainable outcomes for clients. The team supports a variety of individuals and families with focus on sport nutrition, gastrointestinal health, eating disorders, weight loss, mindful eating, vegetarian eating and meal planning.

Candace Jones

Candace became hooked on Group Fitness after the birth of her second son in 2005. The energy of the instructors and the group helped her lose almost 90 pounds. Since then she has moved on to inspire others as a SPRA certified group and aqua fitness instructor adding cycling and yoga certification also. Candace motivates her participants by encouraging them to listen to their bodies while pushing past the barriers they may have set for themselves.

Dr. Nancy Gyurcsik

Dr. Nancy Gyurcsik is a Professor in the College of Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan. Her research expertise is in promoting physical activity among adults with chronic pain.

Dr. Susan Tupper

Dr. Susan Tupper is the Coordinator of Pain Strategy and Research for the Saskatoon Health Region. Susan has been a licensed physical therapist for 24 years and has a PhD in Community Health and Epidemiology.

Jacqueline Tuffs

Jacqueline is the owner of Jacqueline Tuffs Fitness, group fitness professional and educator as a Master Trainer for Beachbody LIVE. With over a decade in the fitness industry and 20 years as a professional coach working with athletes, she believes that experience helped prepare her to guide, support, motivate people all of ages and abilities. Jacqueline holds over 20 fitness certifications including SPRA Fitness Leader Certification. She teaches at her studio GET JACQUED in Kindersley and is married with two children.

Jana Danielson

As the owner of Lead Pilates, Cycle & Fitness and Lead Integrated Health Therapies, Jana has worked to create a unique business devoted to providing clients with the latest trends in health and fitness and then integrating them with health services of Chiropractic, Sports Medicine, Massage, Naturopathic Medicine, Reiki and Reflexology. Jana went from teaching Pilates out her basement studio to being the owner of Lead’s state of the art 9,000 square foot facility.

Jill Hubick

Jill graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Today Jill is proud to be a Registered Nurse and Certified Respiratory Educator with The Lung Association. She also has a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and received distinction for her double majors (Fitness and Lifestyle and Adapted Physical Activities) from The University of Regina. She is passionate about health and fitness and is qualified to teach a wide variety of fitness programs such as Dance Fitness, Zumba® Basic 1 and 2, Zumba® Toning, Turbo Kick, Physique and Namaskar Yoga: Basic Asanas. Jill finds ways to share her dance and fitness talents for good causes. She has led and instructed for several fitness fundraisers such as Zumba® for Lung, Relay for Life, Bust a Move for Breast Health and Fitness for Fort McMurray to name a few.


Katelyn Selanders

Katelyn Selanders, BA, BSW/RSW, SPRA Group Fitness Leader, independently designed and created the Hoop Play fitness program. She and her partner co-own Solstice Hoop Play, a Saskatchewan-based independent business that manufactures adult fitness hoops. Katelyn first developed the Hoop Play program while living and studying in Saskatoon and now her 2-day Instructor Certification program is recognized by fitness units in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia! Kimberly Willison

Kimberly came to Saskatoon after getting a degree in Recreation Studies from the University of Manitoba with a minor in Kinesiology and an Option in Aging. She has been working for the Saskatoon Health Region as a Recreation Therapist since 2000 and for the Forever…in motion program since 2008. She has been teaching fitness classes for over 20 years and is a SPRA certified Fitness Instructor and Trainer in Group Fitness, Aquatic Fitness, Strength Training and Older Adult modules as well as a Master Trainer of Urban Poling.

Mark Robson

Mark Robson is a certified Executive Master Trainer and graduated from the Australian Institute of Fitness, with honors in 2008. Mark has a strong sporting and mixed martial arts background and has been working within the fitness industry since 2001. He continued his education as a Master Trainer in fitness, obtaining dozens of additional certifications including Kettlebell, Fitness-Kickboxing, Indian Clubs & Steel Maces, Bosu, TRX, Resist-a-Ball, Lebert Products and much more. Mark’s workouts are challenging yet fun, incorporating full body movements that are functional for the body and practical for real life. He also has an extensive background in Nutrition and Wellness. Mark is also a published Fitness Author and continues to write many magazine articles today.

Mimi Lodoen

Mimi is a SPRA Course Conductor in Exercise Theory, Group Fitness, Aquatic Fitness and Group Cycling. She has been a fitness enthusiast for her whole adult life and has been teaching since the 80’s so she has seen the fitness industry change several times throughout her career. She works for the Saskatoon Health Region as a Healthy Workplace Educator, working to provide supportive environments, programs and services for its 14,000 employees.

Kristen Cutting

Kristen’s fitness career began in 2008 at the YWCA teaching a Cardio and Sculpt class on Friday mornings. Dance was my passion growing up and I found that group fitness classes were a great transition after I stopped dancing. After participating in a variety of fitness classes for several years, I decided I wanted to try my hand at teaching and I’ve never regretted that decision.

Helen Vanderburg, BPE, is owner of Heavens Elevated Fitness Club and Fusion Fitness Training™. With over 30 year of experience in club management, program development and motivational speaking she brings a wealth of experience to her presentations worldwide. She is the recipient of many industry awards, including the 2015 CanFitPro Presenter of the Year, 2005 IDEA Instructor of the Year, and an elite athlete as a former World Champion synchronized swimmer and honored member of the Sports Hall of Fame. Certifications: AFLCA, CFP, ACE, Pilates, E-RYT Yoga certified.

Judy Cudrak, B.Sc., B.Mgmt., is an AFLCA Master Trainer in Aquatic Exercise, Group Exercise and Resistance Training and a YMCA Training Educator. She is a Keiser National Trainer, a Fusion instructor, and a certified Level 1 Ashtanga yoga instructor. She has been an exercise leader for over 32 years, and brings her passion and love for fitness to every class and course she teaches.

Maureen Hagan is a global ambassador on the benefits of exercise and living well, is vice president of program innovation for GoodLife Fitness and CanFitPro. Mo, as she is known in the fitness industry is a licensed physiotherapist, a Physical Health Educator and has been recognized for her work in fitness that spans three decades; named as one of Canada’s 20 Most Influential Women in Sport and Physical Activity (2014) and most recently awarded IHRSA ‘Woman Leader’ of the Year in honor of Julie Main. Mo is a published author and a regular contributor to consumer magazines and on-line publications including the Huffington Post.

Michelle Felzmann is a highly accomplished fitness leader with over 20 years of experience in the fitness industry. Michelle is a Bender Ball master trainer, TRX Master Instructor, host of “The Look” Fitness video series and an international fitness presenter. Michelle specialization lies in strength, metabolic conditioning and core training classes and is a CEC provider in Calgary.
