P3 – Building Strength in your Fitness Classes North West Leisure Centre (NWLC) Presenters: Mimi Lodoen and Kimberly Willison
Are you challenging your participants enough with the strength portion of your classes? Not sure how to plan and execute resistance training with appropriate and successful cues? This 8 hour course will cover a variety of topics including: Fundamentals of Strength Training, Equipment Based Strength, Functional Fitness, Combination exercises and Class Design. Learn the most effective ways to use the few minutes you have in your class to help your participants build lean muscle and increase their metabolism. Recognize proper postural alignment and safety cueing and how to put it all together to build strength in your classes. A variety of portable equipment will be utilized and a strength training manual is included.
P4 – Chair Yoga U of R – Dance Studio Presenter: Marisol Molina-Smith
* Prerequisite: Basic Yoga Teacher Certification with two years of leading Fitness yoga classes. Hey yogis! If you are interested in broadening your yoga skills to your beautiful aging pupils, then this workshop is for you. By attending this workshop, Marisol will guide you through beneficial techniques to extend your basic knowledge to provide a specific strength, balance, flexibility and pain relief program. Learn how to modify yoga poses to accommodate older adults in all levels and there will be ample opportunity to practice teaching what you learn in a safe, encouraging and non-judgmental environment. Health issues and fundamental knowledge about how the body changes with age will be reviewed. Broaden your teaching skills in a fun and
practical way to give you the confidence and knowledge to provide a service to those in your community who would benefit from Chair Yoga.

Over 22% of the SK population suffers from chronic pain. These individuals have a desire to be active but require unique approaches to help them begin and maintain an exercise program. A University of Saskatchewan and Saskatoon Health Region research team has developed this workshop on supporting those with chronic pain to begin or maintain physical activity. The key is to ensure fitness leaders understand chronic pain and have the tools to address it in their programs. Key learnings include: ■ The physiology behind pain and the role of physical activity ■ Myth busters on chronic pain and exercise ■ Psychological tools people need to be regularly active with pain ■ Tools/tips to provide quality and safe environments for people with pain and foster pain self-management during physical activity (Approved by SPRA for three CEC’s)

Every day we are seeing more and more postural deficiencies in the individuals coming into class. As we watch the next generation come up it is apparent that this trend is not improving, in fact it may be getting worse. We are in a unique position to help those that come to our class. This session will help you to understand the posture of our members and how we can efficiently and effectively guide them into a better posture.

No, it’s not what you think! This workshop is about time management in the gym. You’ve heard it before ‘I don’t have enough time to work out!’ Well, we know with all the HIIT protocols today you don’t need to spend hours at the gym in order to achieve results. Chocked full of great ideas, this session will provide you with four different 30 minute cardio, strength HIIT workouts using nothing but body weight. So next time you go to the gym, we suggest you BYOB!

This workshop will provide nutrition-related guidance to active women in their 40’s - 60’s, to assist them in staying healthy through and after their menopausal years. Topics that will be covered are: hormonal and body changes from our 40’s - 60’s, dietary strategies for weight management carbs, proteins, fats – how much do you need cholesterol levels and heart health calcium, vitamin D and bone health, are supplements needed?

A lunge is a lunge and a bicep curl is a bicep curl right?? Why then are these exercises more impactful in some classes over others? It all comes down to thoughtfully structuring your class and your ability to teach and cue technique effectively. Learn concepts around set performance and how best to sequence exercises most effectively as well as how to fine tune your cueing. Take your muscle conditioning classes to the next level and walk away with a toolbox of tricks trainers use to get the most out of their clients.
Join Jessica in this innovative and dynamic session based on current research on resistance training. You will be provided with the tools to design and deliver creative resistance training combinations to keep your participants moving while allowing their body to engage in active recovery. 502 - Yoga for Athletes Presenter: Jessica Power Cyr
Join Jessica for a strong and athletic yoga practice that will draw out the athlete within you. Perfect flowing sequences that challenge balance, strength and stability await you; all linked with mindfulness of movement, breath work and finished off with an empowering yet calming series. The workshop will review what yoga is including breath work and several standing and seated postures. We’ll put it all together with tips on design and delivery of your Yoga for Athlete’s class. Realize your full potential using very little equipment. Discover new and creative ways to achieve a full body workout. This session will show fun and intense ways to move in all three planes, combining facets of strength training, metcon, martial arts and yoga. You will leave this session feeling incredibly stronger and more mobile. It is everything your participants and clients need, while giving them the workout they want.
504 - Coaching the Interval Grind Presenter: Lynne Skilton-Hayes
Make uncomfortable your new comfortable! That’s what we tell our students they need to do if they want to reach their goals. So how do we ensure they do this when they come to our cycle classes? This HITT (High Intensity Interval Training) workshop will teach you the intervals to do just that. As well, you will learn how to use your music to coach resistance and pace and how to coach around RPE or ‘feel’ in the moment in order to ensure your students find their ‘uncomfortable’. You’ll make purposeful connections with your students that empower them and make them realize they are stronger and capable of working harder than they think they can.
505 - Healthy Lifestyle Change Presenter: Cynthia Rodgers
People fail to adopt healthy lifestyles even when inundated with proven facts. Humans tend to mold these facts to fit their own world view. Changing behavior this way does not work because facts and information do not alter our participants’ views on health. Yet creating great learning experiences required for behavior change in the moment is a relatively easy task. This session will provide you with the information and tools necessary for creating environmental conditions in your class that promote and support sustained healthy lifestyles.

Allegro means ‘fast and lively’. In Aqua Allegro, the focus is on stamina and strength using movements similar to what can be found in an allegro section of a typical ballet class. Using choreography combinations to music, the body is challenged to perform familiar aqua fitness movements with a twist.
602 - MIIT (Moderate Intensity Interval Training) Presenter: Jessica Power Cyr
This is the next installment of Intensity Interval Training. Research is supporting that MIIT workouts can create similar results as HIIT workouts but with less adverse effects on the body. Less injury = less exercise drop out! Jessica will lecture on the research findings; quickly review the energy systems and work and rest ratios, finally taking you through a challenging yet comfortable workout that you can apply to your client base. Take your training to the next level.
603 - Functional and Fun Fitness Presenter: Kimberly Willison
Do you lead Older Adult fitness classes or would like to make your regular group fitness classes more fun? Are you feeling like they have become dull and boring? In this interactive session we will look at a variety of functional movements, patterns and exercises that will challenge your participants mentally and physically. We will use a variety of inexpensive equipment that will add some ZIP to your fitness classes.
604 - Spin Out Loud Presenter: Robin O’Grady
Create a fun challenging class all about the music. Build playlists to take you on a realistic ride, whether it’s at the Tour de France or in their own backyard. Everyone will be riding, singing and immersed in the power of song almost forgetting what a challenging class they are receiving…almost.

The session will incorporate current/updated research plus utilize the vital information from muscle assessments to create more effective, efficient and beneficial programs for your participants. A healthy body is a strong body that can function without injury, and the skills you learn in this session will ensure your exercise programs are building strength, improving function, and reducing injury risks. Learn how to apply your enhanced knowledge and skills in innovative and inspirational ways. Jess will review myofascial lines, planes of movement, mobility, motor control and functional pattern-

All the intensity without the impact! Plan your bootcamp class with the active aging population in mind. This class will include easy-onthe-joints moves with an effective warm-up and cool-down, leaving your participants feeling great! Modifications required to meet the needs of the active person over 50, focusing on range of motion, joint care and more will be incorporated.

Want to try something new? How about Chair Yoga? Experience this adaptive way of introducing a gentler but challenging form of yoga to those clients that are looking for balance, posture, strength and the benefit of the breath. The class will also have an introduction to meditation and its benefits.
12:00 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. 801 - Myofascial Yoga Presenter: Laurie Idema-Wood
Join Laurie Idema-Wood for a post workout recovery! This is a fantastic complement to your yoga practice or fitness program. Release tension, create balance, help to prevent injury and ease your tired body. Learn self massage techniques utilizing a small ball followed by the corresponding yoga pose to affect the muscular and fascial systems. Reduce delayed onset muscle soreness, maintain optimal muscle function and mobilize dysfunctional tissues. This class is about self-care, relaxation and promoting health within the body. No yoga experience is required. A small ball will be provided, which you can then take home for personal use. Bring your own yoga mat. Those with joint replacements or those with medical issues where skin is sensitive to pressure, are asked to consult their doctor before participating.

Carla Coulson, R.D.
Carla has been working as a Registered Dietitian for 23 years. She owns Personal Best Nutrition Consultants Corp with her business partner Thomas Hamilton. Carla delivers nutrition education through various mediums within her private practice, as well as through her part-time role as a Certified Diabetes Educator at the Diabetes Education Centre in the General Hospital. She is a Sport Nutrition consultant for the Sports Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan and has worked with thousands of athletes throughout Southern Saskatchewan. She provides consultation for her private practice clients out of Level 10 Fitness.
Kimberly Willison
Kimberly came to Saskatoon after getting a degree in Recreation Studies from the University of Manitoba with a minor in Kinesiology and an Option in Aging. She has been working for the Saskatoon Health Region as a Recreation Therapist since 2000 and for the Forever‌in motion program since 2008. She has been teaching fitness classes for over 20 years and is a SPRA certified Fitness Instructor and Trainer in group fitness, aqua, strength training and older adult modules as well as a Master Trainer of Urban Poling.
Laurie Idema-Wood Cynthia Rodgers
Cynthia has worked with at-risk youth and has been a conference presenter on motivation and behaviour change. She has published numerous newspaper articles, newsletters and journals and is pursuing a writing and fitness career. She currently teaches fitness classes and helps others create the necessary neurophysiology required for permanent well-being.
Jill Hubick
Jill graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and also has a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Regina. Today Jill is proud to be a Registered Nurse and Certified Respiratory Educator with The Lung Association. She is passionate about health and fitness and is qualified to teach a wide variety of fitness programs.
Jocelyn Blouin, MSc.
Jocelyn is a PhD student in the College of Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan. Her research focus is on psychosocial factors important for adults to adhere to exercise for well-being, health promotion, disease prevention and selfmanagement.
(B.P.A.S.)(C.S.E.P.-C.E.P.)(C.S.C.S.)(R.M.T.)(M.T.A.S.) Registered Massage Therapist/ Exercise Therapist Laurie has been teaching fitness since the 1980s and training instructors since the 1990s. She has a Kinesiology and Massage Therapy Degree and is also a Certified Exercise Physiologist, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Yoga Instructor. During the day, you can find Laurie at her small business Body Connections Fitness & Massage Therapy where she specializes in postoperative orthopedic rehabilitation. During evenings and weekends, she partners with the community to offer various fitness classes and instructor trainings. In her spare time, Laurie enjoys lifting weights, hiking and biking with her family.
Mackenzie Marchant, BHK
Mackenzie is a Master of Science graduate student in the College of Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan. Her thesis research involves the psychological processes underlying behavioural exercise maintenance.
Marisol Molina-Smith
Marisol has a degree in Recreation Studies and a B.A. from the University of Manitoba. She is an Exercise for Older Adults SPRA Fitness Leader and Course Conductor and has led specialized older adult exercise classes for over ten years. She is a Yoga Alliance Certified Yoga teacher, leading Senior’s Yoga, specializing in Chair Yoga, for the last eight years. Currently she is employed with the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region as a Health Educator (Forever…in motion and Live Well with Chronic Conditions programs) and Educational Director with the Regina Therapy Recreation Association Executive. Her passion is to motivate aging adults to become more physically active!
Milena Ehr
Milena is a fitness enthusiast and found her love for fitness and drumming in POUND®. Milena moved to Canada from Venezuela in 2016 and has been playing drums since she was 11 years old. In 2013 she started teaching Zumba, and since then she has always been looking for new challenges and different ways to motivate her students.

Shane is the Director of Health and Fitness at the YMCA of Regina. His passion for fitness and movement quality helps him strive to learn more each and every day. He is a Certified Personal Trainer and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from the University of Regina. Kirsten has worked in the fitness industry for over five years. Ashley Bishop
Born and raised in British Columbia, Ashley spent the first ten years of her career working as a professional dancer in Vancouver BC, a choreographer for Wyndham Resorts in Cozumel, Mexico and a featured performer for Carnival Cruise Lines. She is a certified Ballet Teacher (RAD), Personal Trainer (ACE) and a Group Exercise Instructor (AFAA/AEA). Now Living in Northern California, she is a fitness instructor by day, and a ballet instructor by night. On weekends, Ashley travels around the continent teaching a variety of workshops for fitness instructors. She is a Continuing Education Provider for ACE, AFAA and AEA, an Aquatic Training Specialist for the Aquatic Exercise Association, and a Zumba Jammer™ for Zumba Fitness®. Ashley absolutely adores teaching, learning and sharing knowledge with others.
Jessica Power Cyr
M.Sc., B.Sc.Kin. CSEP-CEP, CSEP-CPT IE, ACSM-CES, AFLCA Trainer, FMS Level 2 Jess is a fitness and mind body guru, leading industry educator, programmer and public speaker. Jessica brings a wealth of information, charisma and personality to each session making them fun and easy to learn from. You’ll never walk away bored from one of her session and you WILL learn something new or change your perspective on something old. Jess is fortunate to be working closely with industry leaders at Mount Royal University, University of Calgary, and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology to provide you with industry trends that are safe and effective. Lynne Skilton-Hayes
Lynne is the Fitness Program Supervisor at the University of Guelph where she is responsible for the programming of hundreds of programs for students, faculty, staff and community. She is a Canfitpro and ACE certified group fitness instructor and Master Personal Trainer. Lynne holds a B.SC. degree and brings over 22 years of education and experience to the fitness industry. She is an International Fitness Presenter/ Educator, Matrix Master Trainer, GSTC TRX trainer Canfitpro Pro Trainer and Woman of Distinction Nominee in 2016 and 2017. Lynne has done work for television, print and videos for online curriculum for IDEA Fitness Association.
Robin O’Grady
Robin began her career in health and wellness in 2003. Since then Robin has been dedicated to teaching health and fitness and her contagious energy and positive outlook has ensured she excelled in all areas. Along with being a passionate Group Fitness Instructor, she owns O’Grady Consulting, helping individuals and groups with Mindset Coaching. Additionally she runs an annual apprenticeship program, mentoring new instructors into the AFLCA. Robin has become a regular Presenter and Educator at facilities and conferences across North America and is proud to be a Certified Mindset Coach, Master Trainer for Lebert Fitness, Bender Ball and Assistant Trainer for the AFLCA. Robin is a dedicated educator and with her positive energy and radiant smile Robin’s sessions are always uplifting and inspiring!
