01| POST-GRADUATE MASTER’S WORK 1.1 [Choreography] Robotic Behavioural Fabrication The research is focused on the reaction and adaptation of the fabrication process in response to material and how its unexpected behaviour can influence the design process. A continuous loop between design and fabrication is proposed in opposition to traditional linear ways of production. The process is enabled by the use of a Kinect scanner, a UR-10 robotic arm and software developed in processing. The concept Choreography is taken from the artist and choreographer William Forsythe who proposes the use of external forces to guide dancers in reaction to them and not pre-defining their movements. In this way, the project defines an initial toolpath which changes overtime in reaction to the emergence provided by the material after every scan. Video Link: vimeo.com/252818932 PROJECT

01| POST-GRADUATE MASTER’S WORK 1.2 Foster + Partners | UAE Pavilion Ceiling Proposal - Grasshopper Assignment The assignment consists on re-imagining Foster+Partners UAE Pavilion for the Milan Expo 2015 actually being located in the UAE instead of Italy. The more open areas of the canyon will now include seating, places to rest, but will need shading from the intense sunlight in order to be useable in the UAE climate. The task was to design and model a simple shading idea using Grasshopper. The strategy for the assignment was to create a ceiling geometry that could merge with the original design, not looking as a supplement. The original curves of the pavilion were used to create an inverted dune by lofting them and controlling the peak of it and the size of the grid cells. The size of the cells‘ openings are controlled by their distance to the peak curve, allowing direct natural lighting into the walls’ patterns while providing shading to the seating areas.

02| PROFESIONAL PRACTICE 2.1 Patisserie Shop La Verite Patisserie shop is located in a new food market in Lima. The market designers have defined the exterior of the counter and are providing a metal framework at both sides of the space. The design concept was to create an atmosphere of elegance, innovation and handcraft at the same time, reproducing the craftsmanship and detail level of the desserts served. A third metal frame was added at the back and the three of them became the canvas for the patterns simulating he preparation of mousses and creams. Software was created allowing the client to play with it and be part of the design process. To simplify the fabrication and reduce costs the pattern is defined by a 2D array which changes height by location, then each element is mapped to a predefined height and colored, producing only five types of elements. These elements are made of pinewood with a section of 1” x 1” and are attached into a CNC milled MDF board.

02| PROFESIONAL PRACTICE 2.2 Urban Regeneration Proposal Paz Soldan Square Paz Soldan Square is located in one of the most important intersections of Lima`s financial district. It is surrounded by Camino Real financial and commercial development, Virgen del Pilar church, Casa Moreyra (historic building) and El Olivar Park. The traffic volume and geometry makes it a very dangerous space for pedestrians. The local council has open a contest of ideas to renovate the plaza and improve its connection with El Olivar Park. The proposal extends the contest objective, taking into account not only the existing space available but reshaping the geometry to generate a safe place for pedestrians and reduce pollution. The strategy consists of reducing intersections and creating cycle lanes connecting the financial district with mass transport station. By changing the geometry, more public and safer space is created. In the center of the square a semi-open pavilion shaped as a secret garden is created as a reminder of the park that is a few blocks away. The concrete floor and bench is mixed with optic fibre and connected to LED lighting, replicating the respiration pattern of the trees. PROJECT

02| PROFESIONAL PRACTICE 2.3 Mixed Use Building In Chorrillos Located in the district of Chorrillos, this mixed use building contains three typolgies which include commercial area, offices and a residential apartment. The building is divided into two sections. The first one is the cafeteria and the other is divided into office areas and a residential apartment. On the right side of the plot, the cafeteria is located with a corner entrance. The ground floor has a double height entrance space and an open kitchen at the back of the counter. The dining room is on the second level, with street views over the entrance space. The restrooms are also located on this level. The reception for the second block is situated in the middle of the building site. This block contains three office units on the second and third level and a residential apartment on the fourth level.

02| PROFESIONAL PRACTICE 2.4 Country House In Cañete Located in the Cañete valley, the “L” shape plot is the result of the combination of seven properties. The house is located at the “L” intersection. The strategy used was inspired on republican courtyard houses, reducing the footprint and maximizing the views to the exterior. The house opens to the entrance pathway on one side and to the great garden on the other. The entrance pathway ends at the garage and a courtyard next to it serves as a foyer for the house and the garden. On the right side of the house a cube is subtracted from the volume creating a courtyard for the guest rooms, laundry and games room. A pathway connects this courtyard with the pool deck and barbecue. On the second level the master’s bedroom volume is extruded over the garden. The other bedrooms have views over the entrance hall and over the courtyard. At an intermediate level the private living room is located dominating the interior space with views over the main living room and the entrance pathway.

02| PROFESIONAL PRACTICE 2.5 Golf Club - GYM Located at the east of Lima, Los Andes Golf Club is a country club with an old infrastructure and poor facilities for families. After an initial conversation with the directors, a set of interventions were defined. These ones included a new service building, the exzzsion of the existing lockers room, a children playground and a new gym. After the analysis of the existing infrastructure, we determined that the best approach was to use the same materials which were predominantly wood and stone. An empty open space on a terrace facing the pool was defined as the best location for the gym. Due to the direct sun radiation into the main façade, a wood lattice was developed over the rotating panels allowing for the temperature control of the space. The lattice cage forms the main space of the gym while it attaches to two stone volumes at each side, one for the toilets and the other for a golf bags deposit.

02| PROFESIONAL PRACTICE 2.6 Beach House In Punta Negra Located at the top of a hill in the beach district of Punta Negra, the house has views of the ocean from the third level. The project is excavated from the hill, opening in its interior through the entrance pathway, allowing natural lighting in all the spaces. This pathway connects with the second floor. On the right block a guestroom, family room and the service area are located. At the left side the living room and dining room connects visually with the kitchen which is located on the third level. The kitchen is connected through a bridge to the right volume where a two level terrace with a pool and barbecue area opens into the exterior. On the top of the left block the master’s bedroom and another guestroom are located, both connected by an open terrace.

03| UNDERGRADUATE WORK 3.1 Thesis Project - Mixed Use Building The Jesuits Company want to rent half of the property they own next to Fatima church and the sea coast. In this property they have some facilities including housing, meeting rooms, funeral parlours and library. They aim to divide the plot into two independent blocks for the developer to build a hotel in one and reallocate their facilities in the other half next to the church. The aim of the project is to combine both units into a single building, giving as a result more open public space, a better integration with the church and the street, while clearly differenciating both units accesses, and the reduction of typical rear facades. Most of the ground floor has open facades with the exemption of the volume next to the back facade of the church, where the kitchen and the ramp to acces the parking facilities are located. This volume works as a joint between the church and the project. The distribution of the building is to provide as much guestrooms with views to the horizon as possible and to mantain the scale of the church and the zoning limits which are twenty storeys at one side and seven at the other.
