I have no questions and certainly no answers - just gratitude for the amazing influence you’ve had on me. After spending an afternoon reading about your company, your people, and your mission, I can honestly tell you that you have connected with me on an emotional level. I appreciate your soulful approach to inspiring others. It was so refreshing to read about Lowa’s environmental and socially responsible practices, and the content under the “Lowa Technical Details” was especially intriguing. Based off your web page, and all I have read regarding Lowa, my belief in companies setting out to “do good” was certainly reinforced. Wa ndered up through the icefall in the light mountain boots, very quick and We believe in Polyurethane (PU) for midsoles. It’s a terrific shock absorber, rebounds well, has a long life and is durable. A PU midsole will last longer on the trail and offer better comfort throughout days and miles of use. You will get two to five times the performance life compared to molded EVA midsoles. PU, whether we cement it to the boot like on a Backpack boot or inject it as on an ATC shoe, has very little manufacturing waste and is a much cleaner product to work with.

We use EVA when light weight is a primary design factor such as in the Vajolet GTX or Terek GTX. These boots are intended for those who need to travel light and fast. Our Edge™ midsole is a double molded EVA where the material is more dense than a normally molded EVA midsole, with more durable and stable sidewalls. Most importantly, the surfaces are prepared for gluing using a non-toxic UV treatment and not the typical chemical bath. These midsoles are made in Italy and cost more. But, with added durability, lifespan and reduced impact, we think you will find them well worth the investment.

And the 8000 meter boots are great - certainly the warmest and best fitting I have worn, snug in the heel, a real bonus and a first in any pair I have ever worn. This moisture management system keeps feet dry, protecting you against blisters and hot spots. A series of perforations or holes inside the boot’s cuff lining allows heat and moisture to back out through the holes. Moisture is pulled away from the foot, evaporating while you walk.

We are one of the few bootmakers that continues to use undyed soft glove leather as a lining material. We do so because many hikers and backpackers prefer the incredible custom fit, comfort and long-life that a high quality glove leather lining provides. Although it requires a longer break-in period, once it is broken-in, it forms closely to the foot and retains foot shape far better than synthetic linings. It can also absorb twice its weight in moisture by wicking sweat off the foot, making it much cooler than synthetic linings.

Anatomically-contoured for a natural flex that cradles the foot in comfort and promotes a faster break-in time. A LOWA exclusive. The four main features of the “C4” Tongue noticeably increases walking comfort: 1. asymmetrical padding (thicker towards the outside of the foot) 2. recessed ankle areas (inside higher than the outside) 3. flexible curved inset towards the inside of the foot 4. softer edging on the upper end

TPU inserts are integrated in the PU midsole. These harder inlays support the foot in its natural roll-off motion while giving the sole more structural stability. The positioning of the TPU inlays gives additional support to the cut-away heel edge and also results in improved traction and stability when going downhill.

LOWA’s FreeFlex forefoot design holds the foot closely, yet reduces the strain across the toes when the foot is flexed, especially during downhills. We achieve this exceptional comfort by using special to-the-toe lacing that allows for less pressure along the instep. We combine this lacing with a graded seam around the lacing that allows the upper material to settle lower down, thus alleviating pressure across the toes. Plus, the flex ridges in the ultra-soft underside of the tongue allow the tongue to settle in place without the laces exerting pressure on the instep.

Dear LOWA, From minute 1 my world changed. It was though they were made specifically for my feet, ultra comfort. This comfort stayed with me throughout the summer. I walked over 2, 0000 miles in the summer of 2007. I sufffered some shin splints and was forced to hitch some. I made it thru Ca, Az, the S.W. corner of Utah, So. Co and into W. Kansas. From there I went to central Kansas, to Greensburg, a town that almost had been wiped out by a tornado on 5/4/07, for a few weeks and did about a hundred hour’s worth of volunteer work. I then joined another Peace group west of Peoria, Illinois and walked with them for 5 week’s thru Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and into Washington, D.C. The LOWA shoes were on my feet about 95% of the summer. They DID NOT EVER break down and except for the normal abuse that I put upon shoes they held up fine. The
