SATAKUNTA UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES (SAMK) SAMK is a multidisciplinary, internationally oriented university. It offers education and skilled labour as well as research, development and innovation activities for the business sector. SAMK is located on the west coast of Finland; by the sea and the river Kokemäenjoki. The campuses are located in Pori, Rauma, Huittinen and Kankaanpää. New SAMK Campus Pori was completed in spring 2017. The facilities are situated in the city centre next to the bus and railway stations. SAMK Campus Rauma has also been recently renovated and it is located close to the harbour. Satakunta University of Applied Sciences is a limited liability company which is owned by the municipalities and local organizations. SAMK has received several top positions in student satisfaction when quality of teaching among all universities of applied sciences has been measured (National Student Survey, AVOP). SAMK also has the highest graduate employment rate outside the Metropolitan area (Statistics Finland).

INTERNATIONAL CAMPUSES Students may study or do their practical training abroad – or go international at their own campus. There are yearly about 300 foreign students from almost 60 countries at SAMK. Most foreign students come from France, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Britain, Russia, China and Vietnam. SAMK has over 190 international partner universities all over the world.

SERVING THE EMPLOYMENT MARKET AND BUSINESSES SAMK has yearly about 300 student projects together with companies and organisations. Research and development and other innovative activities are carried out in research groups and projects. The focus areas of research include digitality, automation and robotics, marine cluster, tourism business and participation, inclusion and welfare and accessibility.

EVOLVING STUDY ENVIRONMENTS – Some Examples Hands-on with companies All students can develop their entrepreneurial skills in environments supporting entrepreneurship. In these settings the students’ intrapreneurship is developed in cooperation with over 100 companies and communities annually and over 500 students study in them. For example Soteekki service centre offers well-being services for companies, communities and individuals by students. HILL, the learning platform SAMK has developed HILL, an online lecture system and e-learning environment, together with international partners. With HILL, students are given an opportunity to learn and be guided everywhere, regardless of their location. Technology laboratories Engineering students carry out a significant part of their studies in laboratories by performing practical exercises. For example the automation laboratories include e.g. advanced robotics, machine vision, simulation, PLCs and control systems. The modern laboratory with state-of-art equipment and experts is also utilised by companies.

SATAKUNTA Satakunta, the oldest historical province in Finland, is located on the southwest coast of Finland. The total population of the region is about 224,000 in 8,000 square kilometres. The regional centres are the city of Pori and the city of Rauma. The cornerstones of economic life at Satakunta region are energy production, heavy engineering, offshore, process industry, ports and logistics and diversified food industry. Water elements dominate the region; pure environment attracts residents and visitors. Satakunta is known for its lively culture and numerous summer events.
