International cooperation INTERNATIONALITY STRENGTHENS CORE ACTIVITIES There is a great number of international activities within education as well as research, development and innovation. A student has comprehensive possibilities of participating in international projects in his or her field of study. Courses are developed in cooperation with international partner institutions.

Besides the five degree programmes in English, there are courses in English also in the following fields: International Business, Business Administration, Business Logistics, Communication and Media studies, Tourism, Fine Arts, Health Care, Information Technology, Chemical Engineering and Maritime Management.

Regional internationality is strengthened with research projects in cooperation with enterprises, and by recruiting international students as trainees in the Satakunta region. Every year, close to 300 students participate in exchanges in Europe, Asia and the United States. There are many exchange students coming every year i.a. from the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Ireland, the UK, Russia and China. Measured with the number of trainees going abroad, SAMK is one of the leading higher education institutions in Finland.

PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENTS SAMK has concluded two strategic partnership agreements with which we build a new kind of deeper cooperation. With Hogeschool Zuyd in Maastricht, The Netherlands, and Dundalk Institute of Technology in Ireland, we develop extensive educational cooperation, innovation projects, as well as teacher and student exchanges. Close cooperation with partners is also developed in the networks of different fields of study e.g. with intensive courses and jointly agreed international modules.

SAMK distinguishes itself from other universities of applied sciences as a research and entrepreneurship-oriented university of applied sciences. The focus areas of the activities are based on the policy of the Ministry of Education and Culture as follows: • Knowledge provided by highly developed units of higher education • Smooth and quick transfer from the education to the labor market • Competitiveness, welfare and effectiveness through research and innovation activities • Cooperation between units of higher education

Research and Innovation Activities for Industry and Commerce Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) has a key role in innovation activities and in promoting entrepreneurship and internationalization in the region. SAMK cooperates with approximately 300 corporations / communities annually and has over 100 partner universities abroad; mainly in Europe, East Asia and North America. SAMK’s Enterprise Accelerator has already produced over 230 knowledge-intensive enterprises. SAMK works in close cooperation with the University Consortium and development organisations of the region. The key areas in SAMK’s strategy comprise the future innovations in energy, resource efficiency, innovative services and processes, welfare expertise, student entrepreneurship and maritime cluster. The Research Program has been carried out at SAMK since 2010. It is connected to other research, development and innovation activities in the regional, national and international networks. The program has highlighted the multidisciplinarity of SAMK in a creative way and it has given rise to new openings and high risk projects. Four Research and Competence Centers were established in 2013 on the basis of the results of the Research Program: Energy ++, Accessibility, Welfare Technology and Computational Intelligence. Two Centers will be established later: Resource Efficiency (including water and waste water) and Offshore Technology.
