Calligraphy is an art form in which beautiful handmade texts are produced for various purposes. Satakunta University of Applied Sciences is the only University in the Nordic countries that provides extensive calligraphy studies. The teachers of these courses are all internationally highly-valued calligraphers. Shorter courses are available at Open Studies.

Timetable The Symposium begins on 12th June at 9.00am. Workshops will begin on 12th June at 12 noon. You may take part in a maximum of two workshops. The workshops run simultaneously so participants can attend either workshop C, or select one from each of the workshops included in A and B. Every workshop will take only 18 participants. Book early to avoid disappointment. The official language of the Symposium is English. All classes will have a facility for some of the content to be translated into the Finnish Language.

Workshop A, 2 CR | 12–14 June 2015 Workshop B, 2 CR | 15–17 June 2015 ICON GILDING TECHNIQUES (all levels) In Orthodox icons, as in sacred arts of many other religions, gold symbolizes divine presence, glory, spiritual light. This workshop will teach you some main Icon gilding techniques. All these techniques can be used for personal projects and applied in you calligraphy practice. In theory and in practice the gilding techniques studied will be the following: • mixtion- or oil based gilding on different materials, with the groundings: wood, stone, metal • bole-/ burnished- / water- / spirit gilding with groundings on wood • detail / ’assist’ gilding on wood and paper • gilding of glass with the cold method • producing and use of the aquarel gold colour
ALEXANDER WIKSTRÖM IS AN ICON PAINTER, TEACHER AT THE VALAMO LAY ACADEMY SINCE 1999. HE TEACHES GILDING COURSES (WITH ALL THE DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES) ABOUT EVERY SECOND OR EVERY THIRD YEAR; COURSES ALSO IN THE MURAL PAINTING TECHNIQUE AND IN THE STAINED GLASS WORK. ALEXANDER HAS ICON PAINTING STUDIES BOTH IN FINLAND AND AROUND THE WORLD, HIS MENTORS ARE MANY WELL-KNOWN ICON PAINTERS, SUCH AS JUSSI SALORANTA AND PETROS SASAKI, FINLAND; NUN MACARIA, YUGOSLAVIA (BYZANTINE MURAL PAINTING), PRIEST MONK LUCAS ON ATHOS, GREECE. HE ALSO HAS MADE SEVERAL JOURNEYS FOR STUDIES TO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AND PLACES, AS IN RUSSIA, GREECE, CYPRUS AND CRETE. HIS GILDING STUDIES: PROFOUNDLY SELF-TAUGHT IN THE DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES WITH MUCH WISE ADVICE AND SOME COOPERATION WITH THE GILDING MASTER RAIMO SNELLMAN.

VEIKO KESPERSAKS Workshop A, 2 CR | 12–14 June 2015 Workshop B, 2 CR | 15–17 June 2015 THE OPEN WORKSHOP (all levels) This open workshop is for students who want to experience the creative atmosphere of the Calligraphy symposium without attending structured workshops. Students can work on their own projects throughout the workshop at their own pace. A tutor is available for help and advice for the duration of the workshop but there will be no formal teaching.
VEIKO KESPERSAKS IS A LEADING SCANDINAVIAN CALLIGRAPHY SPECIALIST AND LETTERING DESIGNER. HE HAS BOTH BA AND MA IN CALLIGRAPHY FROM ROEHAMPTON UNIVERSITY IN LONDON. CURRENTLY HE IS SUBJECT LEADER AT THE CALLIGRAPHY DEPARTMENT AT SATAKUNTA UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES, FINLAND. HE HAS TAUGHT WORKSHOPS IN JAPAN, USA AND THE UK. HIS CALLIGRAPHY STUDIO CLIENTS INCLUDE UNIVERSAL STUDIOS, BBC, HARRODS AND LOUIS VUITTON AS WELL AS MANY OTHER INTERNATIONAL CORPORATIONS.

CHERRELL AVERY Workshop A, 2 CR | 12–14 June 2015 CONTEMPORARY GILDING (all levels)
Workshop B, 2 CR | 15–17 June 2015 SHINING SURFACES, LAYERS AND LUSCIOUS (all levels)
Create eye catching surfaces on paper to complement your lettering in this experimental workshop. Learn how to produce brilliant effects with metal powders, paints and imitation transfer metals. Then gain confidence gilding with transfer gold leaf and acrylic size. You will explore techniques of colouring and layering gold and metal leaf and find out how to prepare the surface for writing on as well as having a go at writing in gold (chrysography).
This workshop will guide you through a variety of simple techniques in which to utilise gold and metal leaf to write with, on and incise into. Try out laying gold on painted backgrounds and oil pastels and experiment with writing on and into the surface with different writing tools. You will learn techniques of distressing and layering different metal leaf and using positive and negative shapes with your calligraphy.
Use your new skills to create a paper book jacket and bind all the techniques you have discovered into your own unique sample book.
Be inspired by examples of Renaissance and modern art to design a small piece of work combining golden backgrounds, decorative motifs, colour and text.
CHERRELL AVERY, FSSI, FCLAS, IS A PROFESSIONAL SCRIBE AND LETTERING ARTIST FROM LONDON. SHE HOLDS A BA HONS. DEGREE IN CALLIGRAPHY AND HAS CONTRIBUTED TO A NUMBER OF PUBLICATIONS. SHE HAS BEEN FEATURED IN MAJOR UK NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES. CHERRELL HAS TAUGHT IN ADULT EDUCATION COLLEGES, MUSEUMS INCLUDING BRITISH LIBRARY; MODA; ROYAL ACADEMY OF ART; ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL AND HAS PARTICIPATED IN COMMUNITY MULTIMEDIA PROJECTS. SHE WAS CALLIGRAPHER IN RESIDENCE AT THE V&A MUSEUM, LONDON, IN 2012. HER LETTERING ART IS REGULARLY EXHIBITED AND IS IN PRIVATE COLLECTIONS AROUND THE WORLD.

KLAUS-PETER SCHÄFFEL Workshop C, 4 CR | 12–17 June 2015 MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES OF ILLUMINATION (improvers) This workshop will start with the preparation of quills for writing on parchment/vellum and paper with different types of inks. We will look at pre-industrial pigments, how and from what they are produced (minerals, metals, plants and animals). During the workshop we will explore watercolours, tempera and gilding techniques. By completing several exercises, students will learn how to use watercolours and tempera, how to mix different colours and will be given some useful recipes. We will use metal point nibs and quills during the workshop to do some practical work such us drawing of white vine initials, different gilding techniques and ”paintings”. Also we will try three-layer painting with different brushes and colours according to medieval recipe books. By the end of the workshop students will complete an illumination project (with some gilding) of their choice.
KLAUS-PETER SCHÄFFEL IS BASED IN BASEL, SWITZERLAND. HE BEGAN HIS CAREER AT THE ANDREAS SCHENK SCRIPTORIUM, STUDYING CALLIGRAPHY, HERALDRY, COLOURING AND ILLUSTRATION, TAKING DRAWING LESSONS AT THE BASEL ART SCHOOL AND FROM ANDREAS BRENK, FRANCE. FOR SEVERAL YEARS HE WAS THE MAIN SCRIBE FOR THE “ST. GALLER WALDHANDSCHRIFT” PROJECT, AND RECEIVED INSTRUCTION IN PALAEOGRAPHY BY THE SWISS HISTORIAN DR. BEAT VON SCARPATETTI (STIFTSBIBLIOTHEK ST. GALLEN). HE HAS WORKED FOR THE SWISS PAPER MUSEUM AND AS A PAPER MAKER. HE RUNS HIS OWN WORKSHOP FOR MANUSCRIPT BOOKS AND ILLUMINATION. HE IS A TEACHER FOR WRITING AND PAINTING TECHNIQUES AT THE SCHOOL FOR RESTORATION AND CONSERVATION, BERN, AND ALSO FOR THE ADVANCED STUDY CENTRE, BASEL UNIVERSITY.

a) On Saturday, Monday and Tuesday evenings there will be a talk given by one of the lecturers teaching at the symposium. All lectures are free of charge.
COURSE FEE Workshops, materials and meals. The course fee is determined by the period of study in the scale, as follows: • Workshop of 2 credits is 20 EUR. • If you register for two x 2 credit Workshops at a time or Workshop of 4 credits is 40 EUR.

There will be an additional materials fee of • 30 EUR per 2 credit workshop. • 50 EUR per 4 credits or two x 2 credits workshops. The materials fee covers photocopying, demonstration costs and some papers and ink or color, pigment or gold leaf. (The Open workshop does not include materials).

PAYMENT The Finnish participants: will be sent a bill by post. The Foreign participants: will be sent billing details by e-mail.
On the Sunday evening of the Symposium there will be an optional visit to see final BA work of Riitta Harjunen on glass walls and doors in the upper level of the Comprehensive School of Pohjanlinna followed by an evening meal (extra cost). This is an ideal opportunity to socialise with other students.
