STUDENTS A Bachelor’s degree can be completed at SAMK either in youth education, which takes the form of full-time studies, or in adult education, in which case the studies can be completed in addition to a regular job by way of multiform learning. Applications for a Master-level degree programme can be submitted by those with work experience of three years after completing the Bachelor’s degree. The degree may be complemented with professional specialisation studies, which are available in various fields. Studies can also be completed at SAMK in the form of open studies. This way, it is possible to gather ECTS credits for future degree studies.

ONLINE LEARNING TOOLS ARE USED ACTIVELY Moodle is an open source online learning environment which was introduced at SAMK in 2008. It is now an established supporting tool for instruction. The most used functions of Moodle are learning exercises, distribution of learning material, discussion areas and the examination tool. Almost everyone at SAMK is using Moodle: approx. 6,500 students and 500 teachers. Moodle is used during almost all courses as a supporting tool for instruction. The most frequent use takes place during normal working hours. During peak periods, approx. 10–12 pages are downloaded per second, i.e. 600 pages per minute and approx. 36,000 pages per hour. The daily average is 3.3 pages per second, i.e. 11,880 pages per hour.

New areas are also being introduced. The suitability of the Second Life environment for instruction is being tested and suitable areas of use are sought. The use of online negotiation programs is steadily increasing, as they enable simultaneous studying not bound by place. Social media tools, blogs, wikis, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are used during several courses.
