THE BRIEF
THE BRIEF
Design an alternative “Yearbook” for the class of 2014 - a place, a media, a treasure box, an amazing wonderful lasting tribute, for all your experiences, moments, memories, and personal connections during your time at CSM. The nature of you YearBook is totally open and this brief asks you to completely re-consider and re-invent the concept (format, media) of the College Yearbook. Does the Yearbook offer networking or interactive possiblities, like FaceBook? Or does it remain a physical object, a treasure printed piece, a book or magazine or other physical artefact, with tactile and physical qualities and with perhaps unexpected new content? Does it ‘map out’ with information graphics all your personal connections, friends, groups, mentors, peers, over the last 3 years? Inform about, and share, the nature of the relationships? Does it offer possibilities of grouping certain individuals or groups according to personal cariants? What media best serves the aim of your concept? Also really consider your intended audience. What is the user-experience like? Is it an open ‘public-action’, or a closed, private members club? This Yearbook project is about personal identity and group identity. It’s about communicating each individual’s, as well as collective personality. How can you create a system that is coherent as a whole, whilst still allowing for each student to express their own unique identity? Balancing personal and group identity. Through which means do you portray ‘your year’, really express the uniqueness of its identity, the personalities and inform about the human connections and networks? Does photography, typography, graphics, or illustration play a role in branding your personal and social identities?
PROBLEM
A problem I feel is really relevent is that networking on social media and networking sites is very static. Networking should be dynamic and on the move. Many sites mean that interactions with individuals stay within the screen. How can a more dynamic networking system be introduced? Can we use technology as a tool for this and change the way people are interacting with screen based technology and social media sites?

NETWORKING
DEFINITION OF NETWORKING 1.
connect as or operate with a network. “compared with the railways the canals were less effectively networked” BRITISH broadcast (a programme) on a network. “the Spurs match which ITV had networked” link (computers or other machines) to operate interactively. “more and more PCs are networked together” 2. interact with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts. “the skills of networking, bargaining, and negotiation”
SOCIAL NETWORKING
The use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to one’s own.
STATISTICS
The use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to one’s own.
SOURCE: http://www.smartinsights.com/ mobile-marketing/mobile-marketing-analytics/mobile-marketingstatistics/
ANALYSIS: Statistics show that the use of smartphones and such technology has increased dramatically. It has become a vital insturment in society. With a problem like I stated before , it seems essential to use it as a tool to encourage networking in a different way. 2

FACE TO FACE COMMUNICATION SOURCE: http://articles-junction.blogspot. com/2013/08/advantages-anddisadvantages-of-face-to.html
FACE TO FACE COMMUNICATION
Advantages of face to face communication in business are. 1. Effective communication Face to face communication is effective as it includes facial expressions also. 2. Instant feedback Face to face communication gives instant feedback. Doubts and misunderstandings are cleared on the spot. So immediate feedback. 3. Informal and direct Face to face communication is simple, direct and informal. The impact of face to face communication increases because of Participation and team spirit. 4. Confidential In face to face communication, all secret and confidential matters are revealed to the trusted person privately. 5. Delicate situations Face to face communication is very useful to handle delicate situations like strikes by employees, rivalries in groups, tensions in a family, etc. 6. Useful for interviews Face to face communication is used to a good advantage in job interviews, general interviews of public figures and also for on-job-training
Disadvantages of face to face communication in business are. 1. Unsuitable for some people Face to face communication may not be suitable for people who are nervous or poor communicators. 2. Unsuitable for large audiences Face to face communication is not possible to establish a proper rapport with a large group, through face to face communication. 3. Unsuitable for large organizations Face to face communication is unsuitable for large organizations as they have branch offices located at different places and even in different countries. 4. Not accountable Face to face communication is difficult to hold someone responsible or accountable for something spoken face to face. 5. Low legal and reference value Face to face communication is oral; no written records are kept so it cannot be quoted in the court of law. 6. Poor retention by listener In face to face, the communicator can speak at the rate of 100 to 200 words per minute, while the listener’s brain can process about 600 to 700 words per minute. The result is that the listener’s mind wanders and he does not grasp all the message of speaker 4

MY ANALYSIS ON COMMUNICATION LIMITATIONS
LIMITATIONS IN COMMUNICATION
How can you limit communication to boost creativity?
WAYS OF LIMITING THINGS
- Colour - Time - Money - Quality - Sleep - Detail - Characters in words - Punctuation - Sound - Colume - Speed - Height - Length - Objects/Possessions - Pixels - View finder - Time on Social Media - Space
ANALYSIS:
After analysing the different ways of limiting things, I wanted to refine my thinking. How can limitations encourage face to face interactions? The most appropriate solution to this seemed to be time. If people are limited to the amount of time they have to exchange something, it adds a slight pressure to meet up and exchange.
- Number of characters in messaging. - Muffled sounds. - Language barriers - Time limits

TECHNOLOGY REPLACING PERSONAL INTERACTIONS http://www.ashtoncollege.com/ theimportance-face-face-communication/
SOCIAL INTERACTION OUTSIDE OF DIGITAL MEDIUMS
In today’s digital age one can go almost an entire day without actually interacting with people. This statement can resonate in both your personal life as well as your professional life. People rely too heavily on the convenience of emails, text messages, and social media. While you cannot deny the importance of all of these platforms and how they have revolutionized the business of communications, you must not negate the importance of face-to-face communication. The problem that lies with digital forms of communication is that it is highly impersonal. Moreover, trying to make your digital communications seem more friendly or personalized runs the risk of being misinterpreted or viewed as unprofessional. Miscommunication is one of the biggest causes of inefficiency and work-place conflicts. Many of these issues can be attributed digital communications and the way they can be interpreted.
MY OPINION
Digital platforms have made it easier for people to stay connected. Facebook for example has connected millions of people who would not otherwise be without Facebook. In this project, what I want to challenge is the personal interaction between people and professional people using a digital platform as a tool. Face to face interactions are just as important as digital interactions. Arguably, we are loosing these personal/professional interactions with the increase of social networking. What if there were a social network that connected people and encouraged face to face interactions. Statistics show that app usage is growing more and more, which proves to be an ideal platform to use.
AT WHAT COST HAS TECHNOLOGY REPLACED PERSONAL INTERACTIONS?
Technology can be turned off, however as technology and smart phones are so integrated into society why not use them as a tool to creating personal interactions.

MY ANALYSIS ON COMPETITORS
POSITIVES: You can follow as many people as you like. The hierarchy is how many people follow you. This hierarchy encourages people to come back and play twitter as a followers game. NEGATIVES: Twitter “trolls” are uncontrolable, or atleast twitter seems to not be sharp at controlling what is posted by them. It is very easy for people to make fake accounts.
Its about your profile, what you look like, what your friends look like, where you go, who your with. Friends are not a demonstration of power, its in (how cool you look). Profile build incentive, whats the reasion we have networks. We need to create a need. You need to have a digital profile. You have no followers, why not, all cool people have lots of followers.

OLD CONNECTIONS : Getting connected with your old college friends or old customers is another advantage, you always get news about their whereabouts. INCREASE SOCIAL NETWORKING : Using LinkedIn helps you increasing your social networking with various people across the globe.
ANALYSIS
Networking is a mobile experience. One that cannot be done sat behind a screen. What if linkedin were to be more mobile. Linkedin is bulky and impractical for networking. It keeps people behind their screen rather than getting people to interact face-to-face. Linkedin is the most used site for professional networking, however it is very static. It doesn’t change the social interaction people have that drastically.

REFINING MY THOUGHTS
A networking app that connects professional people via location. We want to connect professionals who are well connected with those who aren’t so, via location. Location makes meeting up to networking easier. If you are within a miles radius of someone, you’re more likely to meet up than if you were half way across the world.
PROBLEM
How can we appeal to the well connected?
SOURCE: Forbes
Forbes advice on networking: Even the biggest andmost powerful people in the world have something they’d like help with. Too many people never reach out to those above them due to the fear that they wouldn’t be able to offer anything in return. But you have more to offer than you realize: write an article or blod post about htem, share their project with your community, offer to spread their mesage through a video interview with them. Give real thought to who you connect them with to benefit their goals. If it turns out you can’t be that helpful, the gesture will stand out.

IDEA
FORMULATING AN IDEA FROM MY FINDINGS
A NETWORKING APPLICATION THAT CONNECTS PROFESSIONAL PEOPLE IN YOUR LOCATION. Networking is an active experience, not one that requires sitting down behind a computer. We propose is to eliminate the hierarchy in networking and bring all professionals together based on location. (work, events, talks)
WHAT WE WANT:
Make networking a positive social experience New outlook on how we perceive networking Eliminate the hierarchy Connect people based on where they are Encourage people to network through people they know Offer easy initial interaction and encourage face to face interaction People that you closest to are on the top of your location findings
HOW ARE WE DIFFERENT FROM LINKED IN?
We connect people in location We are a mobile application mobile We encourage messaging We keep networking simple We not an online CV We are focused on networking We recommend people to build your network We are a contacts list/network. Light on information/data Do not see anyone’s connections profile privacy
WHAT IT DOES: CONNECTING PEOPLE
Show people in your location that you know. Shows people in your location that you know through people. Recommended connects through past location history. Recommend friends. Shows all the people in the location.

ANALYSIS: For the profile page we wanted it to be minimal and only contain essential pieces of information. We questioned whether a photo was necessary, however decided that if their were to be a face to face meet up, it is important to know what someone looks like to identify them in a crowd. We initially struggled with the amount of white space we had, and our colour scheme didn’t make the app look exciting and intriguing for the user. 20

ANALYSIS OF IDEA AND DEVELOPMENT SO FAR
The idea that technology can encourage people working together. Connects people and encourages a face-to-face meet up. Meeting new people. Encouraging collaboration, encourage networking. An exchange of intellectual property. It’s free and easy and enables you to build your network, and improve your face to face networking skills. So far it does not show how the location bring people together. There needs to be more ways we can use it. Is it a everyday tool or only for some days?
WHY DO PEOPLE WANT THIS - to build their circle, for when they need help APP? - what people are up to - live address book
You can’t see who other people are connected to. It’s about a lot of one on one business relationships. A live business card which is a simple and clean adress book that is more than a phone number but less information than facebook and linkedin and other social networking sites.
SUCCESSFUL DEVELOPMENTS IN UI DESIGN
It became difficult to design a coherant and strong brand for the app without having a name or start of the identity. It was difficult to pick a colour scheme without a concept or name to link it to.

ADDRESS BOOK
NETWORK ADDRESS BOOK
Currently, most people have many different address books: their email accounts, their mobile phone, and the “friends lists on their social networks. A network address book allows them to organize and manage all of their address books through a single interface and share their contacts across their different address books and social networks.
ONLINE ADDRESS BOOK
An online address book typically enables users to create their own web page (or profile page) which is then indexed by search engines like Google and Yahoo. This in turn enables users to be found by other people via a search of their name and then contacted via their web page containing their personal information. Ability to find people registered with online address books via search engine searches usually varies according to the commonness of the name and the amount of results for the name. Typically users of such systems can synchronize their contact details with other users that they know to ensure that their contact information is kept up to date. Examples of online address books include GlipMe, AboutOne, Evercontact, NexusPad Plaxo, Telnic,Unyk, conXt, and WikiWorldBook.

VISUALISING NETWORKS
BEE’S
ANALYSIS: We wanted the concept of networking to be the heart of the identity. Bee’s are a great model for networking so it seemed to fit our concept nicely. We began to look at the visuals of a honey comb rather than the bee’s themselves. We thought about each comb representing a user and the more and more users we get, the larger the honey comb grows. We thought about ways we could visualise loyal users by darkening the colour of the comb. The older the comb the darker it gets so we thought this would be a ncie link. 36

HONEY BEES: A GREAT MODEL FOR NETWORKING
Definition of pollinate: To transfer pollen from a stamen to a pistil; fertilization in flowering plants.
SOURCE: http://etiquettepage.com/ communication/a-great-modelfor-networking-honey-bees
Without bees and butterflies, no pollination. Without pollination, no flowering, no honey or corn. Pollination helps both to co-evolve. Definition of networking: To meet people who might be useful to know, especially in your job, but also in social life. Many business and professional meetings set aside a time for “networking” during which attendees chat and exchange business cards. But often that time is too short for people to make meaningful connections. Then it becomes a “meet and greet” that resembles “hit and run.” I’ve come to believe that effective networking requires pollination, which adds something of value to both participants. The pollinator gets a reward such as nectar for pollinating the plant. Four ways to pollinate are to: share your useful ideas and new perspectives validate people with your respect and enthusiasm be curious and learn about others help people connect with those they don’t know.

CONTEXTUALISING COMB
WHO?
Rather than looking at professionals as a whole, we thought it would be better to look at a certain industry to start with and grow with the success of feedback from that industry. As we Sabba and I are both from a Design background we thought it would be a wise step to aim this app at the creative industry to start with. Collaboration is very important in this industry and means a lot to me as a practitioner. Making this app ideal for this industry.
WHERE?
Ideally this app would be used in conference situations, or in creative hubs. Central Saint Martins would be a great example of a place it would work within, not only encouraging face-to-face meet ups but also cross course collaborations.
WHY?
Throughout my process on Comb, I have maintained the same opinion on solving the problem of static networking. I feel Comb challenges the use of technology.
