2 SATARA ACHILLE IN COLLABORATION WITH SABBA KEYNEJAD AND SHERIF MAKTABI
THE BRIEF
THE RELEVANCE
PROBLEM
The selfie has recently been added to the Oxford Dictionary. It has been named as word fo the year by Oxford Dictionaries. It’s a fad that started from the introduction of the smart phone and the front facing camera. In 2013 the selfie had gained so much momentum throughout the English language. The Selfie is relevent for the modern day, how can we use this way of taking a photo and change the way people are taking selfies? Can we disrupt the selfie system? Making a tool to make the selfie relevent and add context. Selfie is defined by Oxford Dictionaries as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website”. The selfie has no context. What is the need for a selfie if you have no idea about its context? In this project we wanted to explore the ways that we can give context to the selfie. It’s highly relevent for today as millions of people take selfies every single day, and alot of people have a lot to say about them. Whether they believe that it changes their opinion on someone or whether they are necessary. People enjoy voicing their opinions on platforms such as twitter and facebook. However their is yet to be a platform for people to express their opinions visually. What if their were a platform that was exactly like twitter and facebooks status culture, however using images and video instead.

DEFINITIONS
PERSPECTIVE
Perspective, in the context of vision and visual perception, is the way in which objects appear to the eye based on their spatial attributes; or their dimensions and the position of the eye relative to the objects. There are two main meanings of the term: linear perspective and aerial perspective.
DUAL PERSPECTIVES
Well a dual perspective can be describe a novel framework for the design and analysis of online learning algorithms based on the notions of duality in constrained optimization.
SOURCE: http://uk.ask.com/question/howto-define-dual-perspective
SELFIE SOURCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selfie
A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone. Selfies are often shared on social networking services such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Tumblr. They are often casual, and are typically taken either with a camera held at arm’s length or in a mirror.
DRAMATURGY
Dramaturgy is a socialogical perspective commonly uses the nature of everyday human social interactions. It derives from Shakespeare where the audience SOURCE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dram- imagines themselves as directors ovseriving what goes on in the theatre of everyday life. aturgy_(sociology) In dramaturgical sociology it is argued that the elements of human interactions are dependent on time/place and audience. Erving Goffman believes that the self is a sense of who one is and dramatic effect emerges from the immediate scene being presented.
EXQUISITE CORPSE
Exquisite corpse, also known as exquisite cadaver (from the original French term cadavre exquis) or rotating corpse, is a method by which a collection of words SOURCE: https://docs.google.com/documen or images is collectively assembled. Each collaborator adds to a composition in t/d/1P02vJsRhZvEYGBYQoAMCXK sequence, either by following a rule (e.g. “The adjective noun adverb verb the adjective noun,” as in “The green duck sweetly sang the dreadful dirge”) or by fM6-QPg9yTc1ZBQYPj11g/edit being allowed to see only the end of what the previous person contributed.

LIMITATIONS
QUESTIONS
- what is a limitation? - what does it look like/how does it feel? - how can limitations be breached? - do limitations enhance creativity? if so, why? - when can limitations be too much? Can it cripple an idea? - making the most of very little, finding the beauty/make something useful out of very little. - how does it change? - does it affect social engagement? - how can you make something exclusive?
LIMITATIONS BOOSTING CREATIVITY
Giving someone a tool, and doing something else with it. Creativity out of a tool that limits the user. Are we setting boundaries and leaving creativity in there hands? are we the enabler? Or do we want to create an installation commenting on limitation. Can limitations be useful? Negatives of too many options. What are the benefits of limitations? Providing a tool using limitations to encourage creativity.
EXAMPLES DIGITAL

longer the afterthought camera that it’s been for so long.
I’d never want to just put the same camera on each side. I’d rather optimise each camera for their roles, and treat them with an equal intellectual process. Selfies are a very different imaging environment. The nice thing there is that we always know what the range of someone’s arm is, so we can tune the camera for that setup by using things like an ultra-wide lens and digital correction.
‘SELFIE’ NAMED BY OXFORD Selfie can be traced back to 2002 when it was used in an Australian online forum, DICTIONARIES AS WORD OF according to Oxford Dictionaries. 2013 SOURCE: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk24992393
Judy Pearsall, editorial director for Oxford Dictionaries, said: “Social media sites helped to popularise the term, with the hashtag #selfie appearing on the photo-sharing website Flickr as early as 2004, but usage wasn’t widespread until around 2012, when selfie was being used commonly in mainstream media sources.” Selfie was added to the Oxford Dictionaries Online in August, but is not yet in the Oxford English Dictionary, although it is being considered for future use.
THE GREAT SELFIE DEBATE: IS IT EVER OK TO TAKE PICTURES OF YOURSELF?
A recent study revealed that sharing too many photos of yourself online has a big impact on your offline relationships, making you far less likeable.

But, taking a look at our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, we can’t help noticing that everyone seems to be at it. Not forgetting the scores of celebrities, from Rihanna to Harry Styles, who have a penchant for posing in selfie snaps.

ANALYSIS
ADDING CONTEXT TO THE SELFIE
What I want to question in this project is whether context can be added to “the selfie. Would it make the Selfie more acceptable? Would it reduce the risk of people disliking you outside of social media? If dual perspectives were to be added to the selfie, would it be more acceptable to take them? Do we remember occassions better when we can have a reaction to what we have just taken a photo or video? Opinions and comments have become a way of giving people a voice on social networking platforms, could that be added to a visual platform? I want to challenge the selfie and challenge the way people see the selfie. There are a lot of opinions on it negative and positive. What if a tool was made that made people think different about selfies.

COLLABORATION
COLLBORATION WITH SEX AND GLASS
Sabba and I were working in the library when we started speaking to Sherif Maktabi about a website he was making called Sex and Glass on Friday afternoon. This website was at the early stages of going viral. We asked him what the next stages were for him and the website and what he was going to do with it. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do and planned on leaving it. We spoke to him about this idea and realised that they could be closely linked. We decided to collaborate that evening. This meant we had to work very fast as we wanted to launch this product off his website which would most likely be getting media attention on the Monday morning following this conversation. Although Sherifs website was about viewing different perspectives during sex on google glass. Very few people have Google Glass, so we suggested making a product for the masses and producing it on iOS.

DEVELOPMENT
COLLBORATION WITH SEX AND GLASS
After making this decision to collaborate, we had a marketing plan for this App but had to work extremely fast to keep the audience interested. Our deadline was a week. Often viral websites peak for a few days and their is a decline in interest. We had to work fast in ensuring people would download this App. To keep the interest of our audience we created a blog to post our developments of each stage. http://glanceapp.wordpress.com/

OUTSOURCING
JOURNEY
When it came to outsourcing to a developer, we initially searched on Twitter for developers residing in the UK so that we could set up face to face meetings. However, this was very difficult and the cost of developers in the UK were completely out of our budget. After searching for freelancers in the UK we decided to start searching for them overseas on freelance websites such as “http://www.freelancer.co.uk/” and “https://www.elance.com/” and “http://www. guru.com/”
REQUIREMENTS
Our requirements for the job were: Objective-C iOS A developer that speaks English To be able to communicate easily over skype.
INTERVIEWING PROCESS
Once we had some job applications in, we started to interview each developer or team over skype. Giving them information on what is involved in our project. 1. Description of the project and what it entails 2. View their portfolio 3. Ask them whether they are usually on time with jobs and whether they had examples of when and why they were late for deadlines. 3. Question about milestones and how they work with milestones. 4. Ask them how they have dealt with bad clients in the past. 5. Ask them whether they have any projects on at the time and whether they will be able to manage their time with another project. 6. Give them a deadline and ask them whether they will be able to complete the job in time.
MILESTONES
For our initial build we outsourced to a developer in India. Unfortunately, he didn’t manage to complete the job and we made a decision to find another developer that could complete the job to our tight time frame. The second developer we got on board was from Moldova. Extremely competant and in our budget. For our initial milestone we asked for a work model, without UI but the ability to access both cameras at the same time. This proved difficult and impossible as both front and back cameras cannot be accessed at the same time. To solve this problem we decided to change the experience of the App, recording one side of the screen first and the other side second. Our next milestone was to stitch these two videos together and play simultaneously. After this was completed we sent across our designs. After that had been done we sent him our initial UI designs. After this was completed we decided to publish it on to the AppStore. This was very early and in retrospect a little premature.

POP UPS 1.
BUG LIST OF THE FIRST BUILD
Every time a user is recording a video, he must tap and hold to record for both timelines. He cannot switch between timelines until user filmed first on both red and blue. (So that the done button appears). If user taps the red button and does not hold, a small pop-up says “Tap&Hold to Record”. If users taps and holds to record less than 2 seconds, the app will record the extra time automatically. When the button is released, the borders will flash blue for 1 second, and the button becomes blue at the same time. If user taps blue button and does not hold, same as above.
BUGS
Once the user recorded enough on both, red & blue, then the user can switch between timelines by tapping with no pop-ups appearing.
2.
Remove bug that saves several videos once we click save.
3.
Make the info bar (battery, time, signal) disappear
4.
Borders flash red or blue when moving from one timeline to another. ex: moving red to blue, borders flash blue for 1 sec. moving from blue to red, borders flash red for 1 sec.
5.
A camera flip button, to switch from back to front facing camera. Implement no change policy once a video has been recorded in one of these cameras. ex: if you record in front facing on blue, you cannot change.
6.
New design for “save”, “replay” and “discard” screen with just different layout and sizes.
7.
A white flashing ticker at the end of the bar. showing which timeline you are recording on and how much you’ve recorded.
8.
A small transparent line showing the minimum required recording time on the timelines.
9.
A transparent overlay to be placed behind the screen of “saved to camera”.
10.
Built in photo gallery, there will be a gallery what the user can click on to see all the glances they have recorded.

OUTSOURCING
For the second build we outsourced to a team of developers in India. We posted this advert on freelancing websites: We have an app called glance video, here is the link: http://www.glanceapp.info/ We are looking for a talented IOS developer to make some UI changes to our app. Changes follow: Remove bug that saves several videos once we click save Make the info bar (battery, time, signal) disappear Camera flip button UI image Updates. White flashing ticker at the end of the bar. showing which timeline you are recording on and how much you’ve recorded. (we will provide design.) A small transparent line showing the minimum required recording time on the timelines. (we will provide design.) A transparent overlay to be placed behind the screen of “saved to camera”. (we will provide design.) Pop-ups once user does press and hold to save. We will provide more information over Skype. We only hire developers that speak english.
TECHNICAL UPDATES FOR THE SECOND BUILD
1) after a while of installing the app, the viewfinder only shows black. The flash can be turned on. I took some video in this state. Clicked done and it the flash was still there. 2) when the record button is tapped, we want the video to simply move to the second color (ex:red to blue). What is happening is that it’s recording a few seconds of video. - more info please, I dont understand what you mean. 3) “video has been saved to camera roll” with white opacity background after save. - can you please elaborate this one ? When user selects save, we want it to show “saved to camera roll” for 3 seconds.

No change between timelines. 6) If you press X - Deletes entire footage and you go back to the start. 7) Two positions for two buttons. Disappears after recorded and new button position appears. 8) Consider changing the blue colour.
ANALYSIS
To see updates in what the developer had been working on we used a program called Test Flight. This enabled us to beta test the builds. After each test we would write down and send a list of improvements to the developer. It was vital in seeing exactley how our app would look in the AppStore and enabled us to test it out on friends and get an instant response from them.

Cindy Gallop contacted us through Twitter and took a big interest in what we were working on. Her interest is to reinvent the way society see’s sex. She is an inspirational female and gave us a huge amount of advice and insight into her life. After meeting with her she had invited us to New York to talk at Social Media Week in New York in February 2014. This was very exciting for us. However, at this point we were in conflict with whether we wanted Glance to be associated with sex. At this stage we were considering marketing it for people of all ages so that it could be used by anyone. Sex was not the route we wanted to go down and felt that Glance had developed far away from Glass and Sex. We started redesigning the Glass and Sex website which would be turned into the official Glance website.

At the 2009 TED conference, Gallop launched the MakeLoveNotPorn web site in a 4-minute TEDTalk that the TED blog described as “one of the event’s most talked about.”[5] The goal of MakeLoveNotPorn is to provide more realistic information about human sexuality than that provided by hardcore pornography.[5] She later published a TED Book, Make Love Not Porn: Technology’s Hardcore Impact on Human Behavior.[11] MakeLoveNotPorn.tv launched in August 2012, a video sharing site designed “to make #realworldsex socially acceptable and socially shareable.”[12] 52
