Andrew McLeod

R. E. FISHER

Andrew began his career in New York City after leaving a marketing position at Donna Karan New York. Mostly self-taught, he concentrated on shooting fashion and built an impressive roster of magazine and advertising clients. Then, in mid 2009, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he is also frequently commissioned for portraits in the celebrity and music world. His still life work was originally conceived for personal and fine art projects, but clients liked the fresh approach and started to ask for it. This month’s collaboration with stylist, Brian Primeaux, took Andrew’s polished snap-shot approach to tell the eco-friendly, day-in-the-life story, “Green Day”.

Mr. Fisher was born and raised in Southern California and currently resides in the Los Angeles, Hollywood area as a freelance writer, editor and entertainment reviewer. His love of and knowedge of the film industry has made hime the go to person for film noir. He has had an interesting and controversial career. With his editing expertise Mr. Fisher has lent his considerable talents to Satellite magazine. REFisher01@yahoo.com

GREEN G

oing green is certainly all the rage, but choosing where and what to buy and eat is one of the most powerful actions left to us as individuals. It can have an immediate effect on our community’s viability. We like to think that our actions can have an effect—for good—in the world, but often the choices we make seem far removed from our desired result. Driving fewer miles and switching to more efficient light bulbs makes sense, but by doing these are we really challenging the status quo? As you consider how to substitute more eco-friendly purchases for traditional ones, however, consider that a major part of sustainable living is simply getting by with a little less.

William Montalvo “Live simply that others may simply live.” ~ Mohandas K. Gandhi

Cotton covers 2.5% of the world’s cultivated land, yet it accounts for 25% of the world’s insecticide market and 10% of global pesticide sales, making it the most pesticide-intensive crop grown on the planet.

D

irect from Wellington New Zealand comes kowtow’s incredibly stunning latest collection “Law of Tangents”. With an eye predominantly on design, the labels 9th ensemble is a group of carefully created organic garments inspired by mathematics, how it corresponds with nature and then translates into fabric. Wavering between tailored and draped design, each piece has been inexplicably engineered into an object of dramatic form. Without the assistance of vivid colours or brightly printed fabrics, the garments hold their own through pure pattern magic. Clearly holding a torch for sustainable design, the team at kowtow have several write ups on their site dedicated to educating 0 0 5

consumers about the situation in 3rd world countries, where western markets are blatantly taking advantage of cheap labour in adversely substandard working conditions. Their philosophy of being aware of what is truly going on in the world encourages consumers to purchase wisely through turning their heads to a slave trade economy. A complicated cotton process is also exposed on the site, with extra kudos towards the designers for crediting the labour of their respective suppliers. A true example of fair trade and eco friendly design, kowtow is one label deserving of genuine credit. Go their now to support their amazing work. KowtowClothing.com

he Nestrest is made of an especially strong Dedon fiber (4 cm wide, instead of 2 cm), guaranteeing a sturdy and solid weave with excellent properties: it shelters those within, allowing them to look out while preventing outsiders from seeing in – a perfect feeling of security! Creators of the Nestrest, an innovative new hanging pod woven from supersize strands of Dedon Fiiber, Daniel Pouzet and Fred Frety are two of Paris’s most intriguing design talents. Close collaborators of JeanMarie Massaud, with whom they have forged new ways of working and approaching design, Daniel and Fred bring a rich diversity of experience to each project they undertake, alone or in a team.

graduate of UP4 (Paris-Charenton), Daniel collaborated with Philippe Starck on large-scale architectural commissions before joining up with Jean-Marie. He has since worked on projects ranging from Renault’s architectural identity to the groundbreaking Chivas stadium in Mexico, all while touring the world for three years with his young family. A graduate of Paris’s prestigious ENSCI industrial design school, Fred worked with Marc Berthier, then with Werner Aisslinger, before joining up with Jean-Marie and Daniel in 2004. He has collaborated with them on projects ranging from bathroom fixtures to yachts to a sustainable village in the Philippines.

ffset Warehouse is a social enterprise and the first UK online retailer to bring together all the elements needed to create ethical clothing and interiors. Offset Warehouse provides all the information and products you need to be ethical in the world of fashion and design. They are the only online portal to bring together a wide range of ethical fabrics, a haberdashery, garments and resources to make it easy for you to be ethical.

To encompass the widest variety of ethical products, we retail items that are recycled, by-products, reclaimed, organic, fairtrade, sustainable and from co-operative initiatives. They also offer textiles that have been printed ethically, using natural dyes, azo-free dyes, and natural bleaching techniques. It’s all about making it easier. One of the biggest obstacles to being ethical in the world of fashion and interiors is sourcing the fabrics, services and products! |

It’s also about doing the right thing. All of Offset Warehouse’s products are socially or environmentally responsible. So every time you purchase something from their website, you can feel good about doing something for someone else! Inevitably, given the current fiscal climate (politely described as “challenging”), some leaders and big businesses will try to weasel out of environmental and social justice commitment or scale back previously “ambitious” plans to become low carbon. If you like, this is the opposite of greenwashing but just as pernicious.

Offset Warehouse’s Fabric Shop and Haberdashery aims to present an ever-growing range of ethical fabrics, materials and trims.

0 1 1

To find these things yourselves, takes a huge amount of time and research. Offset Warehouse makes it easy by doing it for you.

The best defence against such weaseling, when commitment to a better planet is more important than ever, is mass engagement and enthusiasm for new and better ideas, campaigners and their projects. And the Observer Ethical Awards are all about enthusiasm. Each year this is reflected in the fact that the general public vote in their thousands for the people and ideas you think make a real difference. OffsetWarehouse.com

The newest version of Stella Sheer ditches the heavy white rhododendron and replaces it with icier notes of green apple and lemon. Apples don’t usually partner all that well with warm Persian rose, but in this case, the blend seems to work, thanks, perhaps, to the woody amber base. An ultra-modern floral, it’s slightly overpowering at first but dries down into something warmly wearable. In keeping with McCartney’s long-term commitment to the environment, the roses – the main ingredient – are organically grown. StellaMcCartney.co.uk 0 1 3

ive your next afternoon picnic at the park an elegant Japanese twist with Wasara‘s biodegradable tableware. Designed to be fully compostable, the line eliminates the need to wash up after the party, throw away lots of plastic packaging, or carry heavy dishes back home after a sunny al fresco event. Conceived by top Japanese creative director Shinichiro Ogata, these sets of cups and plates are made of a new mix of tree-free biodegradable composite materials: bamboo, reed pulp and bagasse (an agricultural waste byproduct). Wasara tableware replaces plastic and wood pulp disposables while bringing an ephemeral beauty to your table by accentuating every dish you serve. In practical terms, they’re suitable for cold or hot foods, oil and waterresistant, can be stored in the fridge, and are microwavesafe. They fit comfortably in the hand, providing an elegant texture and sturdy quality that is unique in the field. Wasara tableware is responsibly manufactured near the source of its raw materials at an ISO 9001 & 14001 certified factory. The company is currently in talks to develop sustainable tableware solutions for airlines and cruise ships, and they have been honored with many awards including the Good Design Award, the All Design Awards and the Asian Award. Off course, using disposable products on a daily basis is not the most environmental, or even economic, choice you can make, but every once in a while an occasion pops up when Wasara’s good, green Japanese design is sure to shine. Mitsubishi i

The 2012 Mitsubishi i feels more stable than most small cars, especially when cornering. The engine delivers some punch at low speeds, but tops out at 81 mph. With a range of 75 miles on a full 12-hour charge, the i’s unabashed EV persona may not be for everyone, but Mitsubishi has delivered an efficient around-town vehicle in a simple, if strangely distinctive package 0 2 0

M

eet The Greenest Vehicle of 2012. Shortly after being named the EPA’s fuel economy leader2, the 100% electric Mitsubishi i was recognized as “The Greenest Vehicle of 2012” by the American Council for an Energy- Efficient Economy. Thanks to an astonishing 112 combined MPGe, this EV is the most efficient car in production—beating the Nissan Leaf and, well, every hybrid or gas car in America. The Mitsubishi i is the most affordable electric vehicle in the entire United States1. And considering there’s a host of federal and state tax incentives for EV drivers, it’s never been easier on the budget to own an electric car (and especially this one) than it is right now.

I

fun. The 100% electric Mitsubishi produces zero on-road emissions. It doesn’t have a gas tank, emits no CO2, and releases no exhaust fumes. So clearly, there’s no need for a tailpipe. But we’re pretty confident you won’t miss it. An 8-year / 100,000-mile limited battery warranty. We repeat. Eight whole years. Offering more than just peace of mind, the Mitsubishi i’s impressive battery warranty sends a clear message to the automotive world that EVs can (and should) be held to the same quality standards as their gas-reliant counterparts.

Green. In all of its five colors. Featuring remarkable technology from bumper to bumper and a bold, unique style, this is one EV that’s guaranteed to show your true color.

Safety first. With six airbags3 and our unique RISE body design. The Mitsubishi i’s world-class six-airbag3 system includes roofmounted curtain airbags, while its unique RISE body adds additional protection. RISE technology features a sophisticated, impactsmart design that helps keep you safe and sound.

No gas. No tailpipe. Just good clean

ALL I OWN

othemburg-based photographer Sannah Kvist created a collection of photographs entitled “All I Own” where Swedish students were pictured with sculptures made from all their possessions. The result makes us question what we really need for living, if we are buying too much crap, and if it’s true that less stuff leads us to more freedom. “All I Own” was inspired by Kvist’s own experiences – she moved to 0 0 21 4

|

a flat in Stockholm in a truck full of stuff, then left the city with just an IKEA bag with her computer, camera, and a few clothes. She says that people born in the 80’s — like the ones on her project — are the first generation of Swedes that are less well off than their parents. Many people she knows change houses frequently and don’t own property, yet they are commonly described as selfish and materialistic by their elders. SannahKvist.se
