MIKE NGUYEN FotoMN.com Our cover photographer Mike Nguyen has always surrounded himself with talented artists and people. Mike Nguyen began to shoot whenever he could, as a hobby only four years ago. Working with the right people, publications, talented designers, stylists, hair/make-up artists, editors and agency represented models has been a key roll in his success as a fashion photographer.

BENJO ARWAS BenjoArwas.com Benjo Arwas was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. After spending 5 years in the army he grew a deep appreciation for life. Thirsty to experience the world, he began traveling. It was during these explorations that Benjo first picked up a camera and struck by its power; he bought it and began documenting his travels. Years later, his deep sense of awe and respect for a photograph’s power has not diminished but continues to motivate his creations. Colors, textures, culture, and traditions guide his eye to capture Inspired by light, fashion, and the beauty of human beings, Benjo intends to make the fantasies playing in his imagination real through his lens. European influence, good music, nature, and hours of surfing resonate in his images creating emotion, motion, and personality. For Benjo, it always circles back to the human being, the personalities and the community. His shoots involve a variety of people, all with different opinions and different values. It is through this melting pot of individuals that the world is what it is, and by embracing our differences we embrace the beauty of the world. Before each shoot Benjo speaks with his models saying “just be yourself, everybody else is already taken,” a reminder that is their personality and their soul that is what he hopes to capture, so that for a moment in time the person is truly on the lens of his camera. “It’s not hard work when you love what you do.” Currently living in Los Angeles, California, he continues learning about his art at Brooks Institute of Photography.

CARLA PIVONSKI CarlaPivonski.net Carla Pivonski is a New York City based photographer specializing in beauty and fashion photography. Beauty

T

hey say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, which means that different people possess different standards of beauty and that not everyone agrees on who is beautiful and who is not. With that said, you may not agree with what we consider beauty and we welcome that.

“Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.” ― Dorothy Parker ““Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” ― Confucius “There is no exquisite beauty… without some strangeness in the proportion.” ― Edgar Allan Poe “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” ― John Keats “Beauty is not caused. It is.” ― Emily Dickinson “Happy girls are the prettiest” ― Audrey Hepburn “Just because you are blind, and unable to see my beauty doesn’t mean it does not exist.” ― Margaret Cho “Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical.” ― Sophia Loren

In this our January/February edition of Satellite, we conduct reviews and offer analyses of new and popular products with stories shot by Benjo Arwas, Carla Pivonski, Diane Long, Mike Nguyen and Veronica Duszynski along side our music and art features. Enjoy!

nfluences of nearby Scandinavia are apparent in Crème de la Crème, a fragrance and beauty care boutique that opened late last year in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. The boutique is one of about 170 shops and restaurants that occupy the new, award-winning Panorama shopping centre, one of the largest and most expensive shopping malls in the Baltic countries. The store’s physical concept is by the Lithuanian Plazma architects and specifically architect Evelina Talandzeviciene. Light-colour wood, scarce furnishings, simplified lines and subdued edges create a feeling of weightlessness and free-flowing space. We especially like the shipping-crate look of the central counter and the plywood-esque walls. They lend an

air of impermanence and industrial chic to the simple, sophisticated boutique that stocks such perfume brands as Comme des Garçons, Anrdèe Putman, Nasomatto, Mona di Orio, Annick Goutal, Juliette Has a Gun, Escentric Molecules, Miller Harris and Acqua di Parma. Felt-covered Tom Dixon lamp shades and tone-on-tone floor and wall materials add to the organic ambiance of the space...reminding us of fields of rye, and forests of birch and fir. Crisp lighting on the merchandise and simple wall units for display allow the fragrances to take up most of the air space. Unstuffy. Simple. Clean. CremeDeLaCreme.lt

EMERALD Emerald Green is Pantone’s Color of 2013 Pantone has announced that emerald green will be the color of 2013, which means expect to see about a million new shades of emerald green released in cosmetics and, well, everything else next year. Here are four favorites to the tune of emerald green.

Milani Green Safari Shadow Eyez Milani Green Safari Shadow Eyez is an emerald green with subtle yellow undertones. Milani’s Shadow Eyez formula is touted to last for twelve hours and be waterresistant and crease-proof. The texture is creamy enough to enable easy application without tugging or pulling on the skin of the lid, but it’s obviously not so creamy that it slips and slides and gathers in the creases. The color is buildable and doesn’t turn or feel waxy as you go back and forth to ensure a really even layer of color. It has good pigmentation in one pass, and it can be opaque without much effort or product. It sets in about twenty seconds, and it’s blendable enough that you don’t have to feel super hurried to get the job done. MilaniCosmetics.com Zoya Holly POLISH Holly is a luxurious emerald green with lighter green shimmer. Really rich and decadent–opaque in nearly one coat. Very Christmas-y green. The formula on the shimmery shade is beyond phenomenal. I don’t know if I’ve ever used such a perfectly applying polish before. Each coat is extremely pigmented, but the consistency is fluid and flowing without being watery nor thick. Zoya.com NARS Misfit Eyeshadow Duo NARS Misfit Eyeshadow Duo is described as a “rich

emerald green” and “shimmering ecru”. The lighter shade is a pale yellow beige with a mostly matte finish, but it has a really soft, silky texture with a buttery, dense feel. The darker shade is a greenish-teal; it’s a little tealer/bluer than emerald green, but it’s very close. It has more of a matte color base with pale gold shimmersparkle on top. It’s the closest shade I have to Jealousy Wakes, which is greener; I think if you wanted more of a teal and found Jealousy Wakes too green on you, then Misfit would be more up your alley. Both shades have excellent color payoff, and the two pair well with each other. There’s a good amount of contrast, so you can take it from light to dark and everything inbetween. Misfit wore for nine hours without fading or creasing. NarsCosmetics.com inglot #385 MATTE EYESHADOW 385 is a subtly, cool-toned, medium-dark green with a matte finish. This is a really soft matte; it has a really buttery feel to it, where you can feel the powder loosening as you swatch. Its not particularly powdery, though it’ll kick up a little dust if you are heavy handed with your brush. A little product goes a long way, so there’s no reason to jab at the eyeshadow with a brush. The softness and give allows it to apply smoothly and evenly; there is no patchiness or drag with it. Lasts for eight hours. InglotCosmetics

MONARCHY Disintegration featuring Dita Von Teese After seeing Monarchy perform at Coachella in 2011 Dita Von Teese started tweeting about them. The first one was “Currently listening to Monarchy and Cut Copy. What music are you listening to that doesn’t suck?”. They began emailing. Dita described herself as a “super-fan”, and she invited Monarchy to DJ at one of her private events in London in October 2011. They chatted for an hour. It’s late December 2011 and Dita invites Andrew from Monarchy to spend five days over Christmas with her and her friends, staying at her flat in Paris. Less than 24 hours later, Andrew is stepping off a plane in p.

Charles De Gaulle airport. These invitations don’t come every year. The days consisted of private tours of Musee D’Orsay, dinner up the Eiffel Tower, the circus, Crazy Horse, and Christmas day with the likes of Diane Pernet, Ali Mahdavi, Mr Pearl, Catherine Baba and Eric Szmanda along with various other designers, artists and a dominatrix. It was during those Christmas days that the idea was hatched for Dita to feature on a Monarchy single. It would be the first time she has provided vocals on a release. Returning to London, Andrew and Ra wrote a track for Dita called ‘Disissue

J A N U AR Y- F E B R U AR Y

integration’. It’s a song about losing the self in a moment, in a love affair, in a partner, drawing from a metaphor of “le petit mort”, that post sex moment where the mind goes blank, as a symbol of the larger loss of self in a relationship. The track meshes jazz influenced melodies in Dita’s breathy Marilyn Monroe-esq delivery with hard electronic production, and Ra’s soaring vocals for the chorus response - and a “church of synthesizer” breakdown. Energetic, experimental in parts, and emotional, it is both classic and current. MonarchySound.com no.

OLGA

Olga returns for more lustful adventures with a colorful cast of characters by Ellen von Unwerth

O

lga is back! After a first foray with Bettina Rheims for the 2008 limited edition smash hit The Book of Olga, now she teams up with Ellen von Unwerth for The Story of Olga, a photographic narrative tracing the journey of a young widow, Olga, who after the death of her wealthy, elderly husband, is overtaken by an insatiable lust. She searches for love only to find it in the arms of an unlikely source, far from the riches and extravagance to which she is accustomed. It is Olga’s quest that makes this fairy tale highly antitraditional: she is a heroine who is not afraid of her lust, and it is her sensuality that leads her to the happy ending she so desires. Set in a glorious château, replete with all the trappings of wealth and glamor, this collaboration between Ellen von Unwerth and Olga Rodionova brings to life the enviable luxury of both fairy tales and modern desire. Von Unwerth’s team of artists on this project include London born Anna Trevelyan, a young stylist who creates a unique and eye-catching fascinating style that is dark, beautiful, provocative, and sexuallycharged, and French master set designer & prop stylist extraordinaire Fabienne Eisenstein, who is responsible for creating the pagan rituals and extravagant dinner scenes at the château. The first Olga book sold out in record time—hurry if you don’t want to miss this chance to call Olga yours! Taschen.com

n the Dallas Contemporary’s largest gallery space, Nutcrackers consists of 18 life-size interactive sculptures of women surrounding a pedestal holding one ton of Texas pecans. Each prefabricated female mannequin is mounted on her side in an odalisque position and has been retooled to function as a nutcracker. Visitors interact with each sculpture by placing a pecan in the mannequin’s inner thigh, then pushing down the upper leg to crack open the nut so they may eat it in

the gallery. Inspired by nutcrackers depicting female figures - And in particular one found on the internet of Hillary Clinton - These interactive sculptures embody the two polar stereotypes of female power: the idealized, sexualized nude female form; and the too-powerful, nutbusting überwoman. The work also serves as a prompt to action, encouraging the viewer to transgress the traditional viewer-artwork boundary and complete the work by participating in it.

Some of Rubell’s notable previous projects include Old-Fashioned, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The de Pury Diptych at the Saatchi Gallery, London; Icons, at the Brooklyn Museum; Creation, for Performa, the New York performance-art festival; and, since 2001, a yearly breakfast project in the courtyard of the Rubell Family Collection in Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach. Chanel Beauty Spot

B

eauty spots have long been considered one of the most attractive features of the female face. To compliment Karl Lagerfeld’s “Versailles in a Socialist France” themed collection for Cruise 2013, global creative director for Chanel make-up Peter Phillips and his team applied interlocking Cs to the models’ faces. The iconic black velvet details were a striking contrast to the pastel blunt cropped wigs and the pink eyeshadow and blusher. Following a long-standing fascination with the treatment of eyebrows in fashion, the Satellite team are excited about the revival of the beauty spot. Its popularity can be traced back to the 18th century, when women would draw their own with eye pencil or apply false silk or velvet patches known as “mouches”. In the 1950s, Marilyn Monroe’s beauty mark became one of the actress’s most defining features; the same, decades later, for super model Cindy Crawford, Madonna and Natalie Portman. Medically, beauty spots are generally melanocytic nevus, more specifically the compound variant. They are usually symmetrical in shape and measure no more than a centimeter. In Greek mythology, the gods were said to be jealous of those who looked too perfect and hence created a small dark mark on their faces, just to disturb their perfection. LUNA ROSSA Housed in a superbly modern flacon Prada’s latest offering is all about freshness. But not in a predictable, sparkling citrus top note kind a way. Instead, it’s all about spearmint, clary sage and lavender which lends it a slightly soapy floral feel with a sharp, aromatic freshness. Easy to wear and good for evening but even better for daytime. CANDY I love sophisticated, rich-smelling scents and wasn’t expecting to like a scent called “Candy” - Stripper perfume, anyone? - But I did. It smells fun and decadent, with heavy notes of caramel, and drys down into sophistication as if someone had dropped that caramel into a glass of champagne. It may be too delicious for work, but if you want the person next to you to feel like licking you, I’d go with this. Prada.com

authentic Americana to the world market. Designed and manufactured exclusively in the USA, the line is a broad redefinition of American identity that speaks an international language. By graphically combining universal iconic elements of American culture, both historical and contemporary, The RED The WHITE The BLUE embraces the spirit of fashion with a pioneering attitude that’s fresh and optimistic.
