institutions including Yale and the Architectural Association. The directors are closely involved in the design of all projects which are managed by a project architect or leader in close contact with the client. Soft Hercules is a stool cast from foam rubber - the soft squishy stuff that is usually used to make stress balls. The bust of Hercules, usually something solid both in its material and the culture it represents becomes unexpectedly soft, deforming a recognizable object into stranger shapes when it is sat on. It uses the plasticity of rubber to suggest a more uncertain and doubtful state. S fat.co.uk

eflection of Mineral is a 480-square-foot (about 45 square meters) residence located in downtown Tokyo’s Nakano ward. Designed by architect Yasuhiro Yamashita, Reflection of Mineral has received wide architecture and design media attention and numerous international awards. Depending on viewpoint, the house looks like a bulky camper van about to take off. Or it seems to be the result of a giant’s frustrated attempt to fashion a house from a square box. Realizing that the site is too small and the wrong shape for his house, the giant just stuffed the house into the site by force. The whimsy of this beautiful residence is a big part of its charm. At the same time, the house is also
an elegant expression of modern Japanese minimalism, and an example of brilliant use of a sparse site, a requirement in the tight space of downtown Tokyo. Also beautiful is the way in which the interior appointments — the lines of the bathtub, the curves of the waste bins, the wavy length of the utilitarian shelves — respond to the lines of the building. This makes the interior seem larger and much less boxy than one would assume from the outside. Yasuhiro Ymashita who was born in Kagoshima in 1960. He established Atelier Tekuto in Tokyo in 1991. raham and Brown know what walls want walls prefer pattern. They don’t want to be lifeless, plain and boring. They want to be wrapped in pattern and smothered in art. If wallpaper is the stuff that surrounds you, then it should be beautiful to look at, tactile and personal to you and your home. Dressing a wall with wallpaper and wall art gives you the opportunity to personalize your space to reflect your inner mood. Different walls respond to different decoration. The Graham and Brown team have over 60 years experience identifying the latest trends and designing wall decoration to satisfy all your wall needs. The magnificent Skulls wallpaper design reflects Barbara Hulanicki’s mischevous side. ronic, that Madonna co-writes and directs the story of a complex, controversial and stylish woman in England. It sounds vaguely familiar.
W./E.
I went into the screening room apprehensive, I was expecting to be disappointed again after her 2008 directorial debut of “Filth & Wisdom”. I have to admit “W.E. “, is a beautiful and lush film about the romance between American Divorcee Wallis Simpson and King Edward the Vlll. The pressures of society and royalty hinder this love story, which eventually transcend even the royal family. After Edward abdicates the throne to marry Wallis they are exiled from England and royal life to live out the rest of their days in the South of France, never to be part of the royal family again. This film has the potential to be everything you want in a film but the dual stories of a present day women named Wally Winthrop her tumultuous marriage do nothing but interrupt the story you really want to see, Wallis and Edward. Andrea Riseboroughs performance was very good but there were hits of confidence in her performance that came off as arrogance, which I don’t think, was ever intended for a person playing the most hated women in England. Regardless the movie is an intriguing look at an S | 16 | January 2012
elusive women and a love story. The attention to detail, styling and production make this film stunning to watch. Madonna has finally stepped into a genre of film she knows something about, fashion. Thank you Ms. M now only if By Rose Cefalu someone would do a movie on Daphne Guinness. W.E. is a beautifully crafted, passionate tale about the search for true love in the modern world, viewed through the prism of one of history’s most fabled romances. The year is 1998, and Manhattan is abuzz with anticipation about the upcoming auction of the estate of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. But the auction is far more than a diversion for Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), a transplanted Southerner trapped in an unhappy and abusive marriage. Transfixed by the exquisite artifacts of the Windsors’ lives, Wally becomes obsessed with the love story of Wallis Simspon (Andrea Riseborough), the chic, charismatic American who captured the heart of King Edward VIII (James D’Arcy). As she learns more about the sacrifices Wallis made in choosing to be with Edward, Wally finds the courage to follow her own heart and create her own happiness. S WE-Movie.com

At only 23 years old, he has managed to build up an impressive folio that includes work with clients such as MTV, Nike and Cartoon Network. Fallone’s stance is simple —”I love type and design, and I particularly like when both are present” — and evident in much of his work. He is
inspired by Japanese animation and comic books that also triggered his ’illustration-design rollercoaster,’ and his pieces are beautifully crafted and extremely detailed. he 21st Monaco Yacht Show, where Numptia was hailed as one of the highlights among the 100 top meaga-yachts from around the globe. The vessel launched in April in Genoa, after a three-year building process. It was completely custom-built for an unnamed Italian-born American businessman who wanted it for his multi-generational family. Numptia features lavish rooms for up to 12 guests and includes an impressive master suite, a VIP suite, three queen-size double cabins and one twin stateroom. The owner’s suite includes a bedroom, TV area, reading room, his and hers dressing rooms and

a bathroom with a solid-marble bath. Numerous common areas, sundecks, a spa deck plus crew accommodations and all behindthe-scenes space complete the spacious picture. Two specific things about Numptia have attracted the interest of the yachting world. Every aspect of Numptia was custom-created with the highest, most exquisite quality
of design, materials, craftsmanship and functional performance. Even in the megayacht circles, this kind of grandeur and obsessive attention to quality and detail are rare. The other unusual aspect is the fact that the owner selected a relatively unknown shipyard, Rossinavi Yachts of Viareggio to build it, and a littleknown designer Salvagni Architetti of Rome to design the interiors. Working closely with the owner, Achille Salvagni combined modern sensibilities with touches of traditional luxury to achieve a timeless feel of well-being. Every piece of furniture, every surface treatment, every doorknob and hinge was custom-designed for Numptia. Silk carpets woven in Tibet, solid marble in the steam bath, quartz floors in the galley, and an oval dining table covered in riveted alpaca nickel silver are just
a few examples. Exterior design of the vessel was completed by Design Studio Spadolini of Florence. Numptia is available for charter through Burgess for about $646,000 per week, and for sale for an undisclosed price, rumored to be around $85 million.
