nowing we can’t leave home without our macbooks, Maison Margiela created the ultimate laptop case for the upbeat refined men we all are. Carrying on their shearling endeavor, they did another shearling lined hard leather case, this time aimed at protecting your laptop in style. Easy to move around by means of an adjustable shoulder strap, the case also delivers the Maison’s own stationary, bespoke card holder and pencil. Up to the usual Made in Italy quality standards, it features a deep brown premium leather which was specially moulded in order to boast a seamless rounded surface that, together with other hand finished details and a shinny metal zip, make this laptop case a truly oustanding piece.S www.MaisonMartinMargiela.com

loyd Cole was born on January 31, 1961. He is an English singer and songwriter. During the early eighties, he was the lead singer of The Commotions. In 1984 the band released their debut album, Rattlesnakes. The group produced two more albums, Easy Pieces and Mainstream. The group disbanded in 1989 and Cole relocated to New York to record with various artists, including Fred Maher, Robert Quine and Matthew Sweet. The band recorded six albums. As a solo artist, he produced two acclaimed albums, Lloyd Cole in 1990 and 1991’s Don’t Get Weird on Me Babe. Cole continued redefining his sound with Bad Vibes (1993). In 2000, his contract with Universal Records was terminated. After a 10 year period working as a solo artist, Cole teamed with a younger generation of New York musicians under the name The Negatives. Cole has also released solo albums on smaller independent labels such as Sanctuary Records. As a solo artist, Cole has released 15 albums. In 2004, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of Rattlesnakes, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions reformed to perform a one-off, sellout tour in the U.K. and Ireland. Lloyd released the album “Broken Record” in September 2010. It is more of a band effort than recent solo releases. The musicians playing on the record include Fred Maher, Joan As Police Woman, Rainy Orteca, Dave Derby and Blair Cowan. S

David Lyre
A
fter the release of his widely received and critically acclaimed debut EP ‘In Arms’, David’s Lyre – brainchild of multi-instrumentalist, singer/ songwriter/producer Paul Dixon – is announcing his new single, ‘Hidden Ground’, due for release on 24th October through Hideout Recordings. ‘Hidden Ground’ is an achingly beautiful single, understated and yet daring in its approach. Paul’s unique voice floats over the top of his folk arrangements and dubstep rhythms. It’s a unique position, taking some of the best elements of original British music over the years and distilling it into a musical world all of his own. A real step forward, ‘Hidden Ground’ offers a snapshot of what the David’s Lyre debut album will sound like, and is a compelling statement moving forward. Having previously toured the UK with Chapel Club and remixed the likes of Marina And The Diamonds and Everything Everything, ‘In Arms’ has defined David’s Lyre as an original and exceptional act, an act whose music can’t be tethered to just one genre. Previous single ‘In Arms’ was Nick Grimshaw’s Single of the Week and Paul and his band performed the EP live at Maida Vale to startling effect – David’s Lyre will take their stellar live performances on the road for a series of UK dates this autumn. nomie Belle’s Inky Drips drops in Oct. This 4-song EP centers around the track “Inky Drips” off her upcoming record The Crush, which releases in Nov. “I grew up in your prototypical American suburb,” Anomie Belle explains. “The manicured lawns, strip mall parking lots, chain stores, and massive expanses of cement and housing developments depressed me. I chose the moniker Anomie Belle to speak to the decadent alienation of the American dream. Growing up, music became my outlet. Bored by video games and dollhouses, I plunked away on my parent’s piano for hours at a time, teaching myself to play blues riffs and writing little pop songs.” Once Anomie Belle figured out how to multi-track record she studied guitar, drums, voice, and audio engineering, and continued to play classical violin in orchestras throughout. She spent four years working as a studio musician, chamber violinist and producer in Madrid, New York, Buenos Aires, Glasgow and Amsterdam. When she returned to the United States, Anomie began concocting her eloquently sultry, sexy style, drawing upon the multitude of genres that had surrounded her. Anomie Belle’s dark, introspective and sensual electronic music has been garnering much attention since her debut in 2008, and she is back with the provocative new single Inky Drips. anciful chefs and diners need not continue. Jon Liow’s Lean Dish is a minimal, function-focused design that feeatures two subtle ridges raised just high enough and spaced apart enough to support toasty slices of your choice. The concept was inspired by food running together, which not all eaters are into. Instead, the ridges prevent food from touching the other items on your plate. S

uster is a Melbourne-based Australian furniture brand, operated by four sisters with Dutch heritage, hence the name Zuster, Dutch for “sister.” The sisters are all directly involved, contributing different strengths: Wilhelmina McCarroll is the designer, Meika Behrendorff handles sales and events, Katrina Myers is in charge of manufacturing and logistics, and Fleur Bouw management/pr. As daughters of Melbourne craftsman and homebuilder, Meyer Sibbel, the sisters come to the Dutch design sensibility, European style and impeccable craftsmanship by blood. For the past 15 years, the Zuster sisters have created hand-made, bespoke, contemporary European wooden furniture for both residential and commercial clients. The clean lines, perfect detailing, purity of design and focus on the qualities of wood make their furniture timeless and adaptable to changing requirements and environments. The craftsman’s obsessive attention to detail is reflected in each piece: subtle shadow lines, seamless timber butterfly handles, carefully matched grains that showcase the wood and work with the proportions of the piece. There’s also folkloric whimsy in some of the turnedwood pieces, especially in the stout little side tables that look like squat candlesticks, and in the tall, spindly candlestick-like corners of an otherwise clean-lined bed. Both items are part of Zuster’s newest collection, Sabrina. S

Legend & Myth By Damien Hirst
A
rtist Damien Hirst presents the anatomy of mythical horses, currently on display at the Chatsworth House in England.
Tapping into every child’s darkest nightmare, two life-sized sculptures by Damien Hirst, entitled “legend” (the pegasus), and “myth” (the unicorn) find a home at English tourist attraction “Chatsworth House” until October 30th. Part of an annual exhibition called “Beyond Limits”, the works of art depict the legendary horses as being flayed down the middle, exposing their visceral musculature and bones, quite like something you might encounter in a Harry Potter anatomy class. The fantastical aspect of the creatures is somewhat debunked by putting their inner workings and anatomy on display, and in Hirst’s words: “In a way, science brings religion down to earth, and to cut open mythical creatures and expose them as no different than mortal horses is somehow still magical. It’s kind of like exploding a myth to make it real.” S damienhirst.com chatsworth.org October 2011 | 25 | S
