elcome to the opening of our twelfth edition. Opening meaning, this issue is only a teaser for what’s coming next. All I can say is the ideas are revolutionary! As we stand on the brink of our second year of operation, on the very day that consumers in Colorado partake in the what has been hailed as the end of Prohibition, I’d like to take the opportunity to talk about the extraordinary social experiment that is Sativa Magazine — who we are, why we exist and why we hope you care.

WHO WE ARE Sativa Magazine was born out of a pit of frustration deep inside me as I struggled through the recession after being laid off in the print publishing industry. With too much pride to accept any less than I was worth, I decided to give my time away as a volunteer to build something bigger and greater than myself. Something positive. A selfless mission to change the economy and create jobs. Small or large, I intend to put a dent in the system. I was frustrated with the economy and the unemployment rate. I had been on unemployment too long, competing against age and talent. The demand for my skills in the job market became nearly non-existent and the available talent was excessive. It changed many of my political views. But there were selfish motivations as well — the desire for a job of my own, a job that would put food on my table doing something I’m trained to do well. And there was a deep disgust with our current corporate structure and the rampant greed in our current capitalist system. I’m not against capitalism myself. I believe it’s a positive system for innovation. However, in recent decades the system has been held hostage. Bad leaders have

set bad examples. I want to build a company that sets an example of what a responsible corporation is and should be. A corporation that cares more about the people that hold it together and the people that build the dream alongside the visionary that leads them. There are many corporations like us coming. The era of corporate greed may be short-lived as our generation leaves this planet and the next comes into power. Let’s hope so. My goal is to help build the company that will be the largest employer in the media industry. It’s a BIG goal. We may not make it all the way to our goal. But half way would be just as cool! My background and education is in Business Management with a passion for Marketing and Advertising. I was raised by a biker and a hippie. My sisters real name is actually Sativa. We lived a free-spirited life. There were many happy years. D.A.R.E. changed that. Life changed after one gram of Cannabis (leaves/shake). I have a real strong passion to see this plant legalized for freedom issues. I believe it’s much less harmful than alcohol and I think the majority of the world would agree. I don’t support prohibition at all. I don’t have all the answers, but I think most of the world would also agree that prohibition is a broken model that has proven ineffective. I wanted to use my experience and education combined with my background knowledge of the industry to create the Cannabis powerhouse. THE voice of Cannabis. I wanted to start by helping build the business side of the industry and create jobs and an industry that creates taxes that support many positive programs we count on, such as education. We started putting Sativa Magazine together in 2012 right before Cannabis was voted legal in both Washington and Colorado state. We are living in revolutionary times. Occupy Wall

The era of corporate greed may be short-lived as our generation leaves this planet and the next comes into power. Let’s hope so. Street was all over the news along with the Tea Party. Wall Street was struggling. Everyone was struggling and they were all looking for answers. Then along comes the power of an industry that has become more ripe every year due to prohibition. Doesn’t everyone know that if you tell someone they can’t so it, especially kids, they want to do it more? The talk in Seattle was getting very exciting. I knew we had to get in fast. Unsure of where the vote would go, I knew the tides were shifting and it was time to get ready for the future of Cannabis as a commodity, as a medicine, as an entire industry. I know many people are scared of what it will look like. I wanted to be a part of guiding the change occurring in Cannabis policy while the whole world was paying attention. I worked hard to find the best of the best team members to help build this dream with me and many times I’ve said to myself, “This must be fate.” Our team is incredible. Many of us have worked for more than a year at this and we are excited about the future and where we are going. Our team is highly educated in their respective fields of expertise, and many of us don’t consume Cannabis. We simply believe in what we are doing and support freedom. Working for Sativa Magazine has been described often as not feeling like work. However, we have been at this now for over a year and we have accomplished major victories and goals. Now it’s time to bring this to another level. Our team constantly amazes me and is more than capable of delivering the best. And every issue we keep getting better.

SATIVAMAGAZINE.COM

Expect a call from us if you are a business owner in the industry. We have a very targeted audience and soon we will be making changes that will increase our readership tenfold. The majority of our twenty thousand readers each month are involved in the Cannabis industry in some way. Some are just interested readers. Soon we will be opening our marketing and advertising options and bringing readership in from many new corners of the market that will bring us to the tipping point. It’s very close. We work hard to provide you with the information you need and desire. We help the business owner, the activist, the consumer, the freedom fighter, the organizations working to change the rules that have proven incapable of achieving their goals. We will continue to provide you with everything we can and more. Our team is dedicated, educated and have premeditated, motivated goals to change the world. In whatever way we can.

WHY WE ARE Right now we are in the middle of a revolution. Currently it is very quiet. Many are waiting on the sidelines waiting to see how the cards are laid out. But we are done playing cards and gambling with our futures. We have the power to change everything. So many Americans do not vote. So many Americans have had their freedom to vote stolen from them because their belief system did not match the majority at the time. Tides shift and opinions change with time but the draconian laws that took their vote still lay in place with many barriers to eradicate their

opinions. We have let business and money take over in America and small number have taken advantage of the many freedoms that were put in place in America to create opportunities to achieve our dreams. Things are changing fast. We have seen the destruction of this corruption and we are working on the answers. Corporations and sectors such as the pharmaceutical industry with deep pockets have begun to get involved. The good news is that you are capable of changing the future. People have lost faith in their voting power. Roughly 40% of eligible voters do not vote. 40% could definitely change a vote. But we also have to think of the reasons, the barriers and why is that 40% of eligible voters do not vote. This is important in a society that counts on it’s leaders to be voted in by those that they will lead and lead them in a manner that the voters desired. A large number of us are letting others control our lives and make our decisions for us. Do you trust them? Do you like what they’ve done for you? It’s your choice. how large of a role you want the government to play in your life and what do you think the government should be focusing their attention on? The power is in the vote. Collectively we have done a pretty good job in America so far. The balance however is shifting and your vote counts more now than it may have ever in history. You’re losing more freedom every day.

28

JANUARY 2014

WHAT WE WANT How do we make it easier for people to vote? I have some ideas. One would be a voting application for your phone with voice, fingerprint and facial recognition software to tally votes. You could carry this phone over to your neighbors so they can vote. All votes would be put on a separate server after download to prevent hackers from reaching it and all votes would be retallied with the best identification software available on the market already today. Another would be to remove many of the voting restrictions that have many negative consequences on our freedom. Such as those who were charged with possession of Cannabis and had their rights to vote taken away. Their vote should count more than many others. They understand first hand what effect these policies are having and their voice should be heard. The right to vote should never be removed from any citizen for any reason. No matter your opinion of their life choices, or the mistakes they have made, everyone deserves to vote for a better system. One that might have prevented them from making the wrong choice in the first place. The next edition of Sativa Magazine will cover many topics on voting rights and revolutionary ideas to change the landscape of our generation and the generations to follow. What world do you want to pass on to your children? The American spirit is a revolutionary and creative one. We possess more power than we seem

to realize. Do you know how to change the world? Would you like to change the world? Maybe just your neighborhood. Change requires action. What are you going to do? It is up to our generation to fix many bad policies passed along over the span of one hundred years in America. We have created a Goliath. Side by side we have also created a million Davids with the ability to collectively take down a giant. Would it be better to teach the giant how to live a life like ours, or is destruction of the giant a necessary first step? The balance has shifted heavily. You decide what direction the future moves. Is it David and Goliath or can the beast be tamed? Our generation is on the edge of a revolution. What will it look like? So where is the future moving? Cannabis has been legalized recreationally in two states and Uruguay is the first country to fully legalize the use of Cannabis. The medical market is on the edge of a major shift. With some Cannabis patents already filed, there are large organizations that are preparing to take control of the market shortly. In Washington state they are planning on shutting down our dispensaries and taking away many of our patient rights, one of which is the ability to grow your own medicine. The discussion has leaned towards allowing up to three flowering plants and three plants in vegetation, for patients only. There are many reasons that is not enough to support a patient. One of which is making sure you have enough to cover your medical needs if your crop fails for any reason. Many patients could run out of medicine under these rules because the power went out in a snow storm for a week. After that week is over, their plants have been destroyed. They will run out of medication before they can finish up their next cycle. Someone who

SATIVAMAGAZINE.COM

medicates heavily will struggle very hard with their malady, experience debilitating pain and end up back on opiates — highly addictive and deadly. Are we choosing extra tax dollars over the quality of a patient’s life? I hope not. I believe in taxes like many business men and women, but how tight do the regulations have to get? Will they trade patient comfort for more tax dollars at the retail Cannabis level? We’ll see. Will you do something about it? Does this mean the end of dispensaries and home growing for patients? We sure hope not. But many states will probably go that route. Here in Washington state, as I said, they are trying to take many of our current medical Cannabis rights from us. They may succeed in taking some and we need to vote to make sure they do not take many, if any. Washington and Colorado are setting the example for many future states laws on legalization and regulation. Watch closely and you will begin to see how the future of Cannabis in America will soon look. It will not be long before Cannabis becomes a Schedule II or III drug. What will happen when it does? What will those patents mean then? We are about to find out soon. Sativa Magazine and the group of publications we produce will help build an industry that is run professionally and is open to any responsible entrepreneur. Cannabis and hemp are about to become globally-traded commodities. Where are we going to fit into that puzzle? We plan to help educate those brave spirits that lead the way through this exciting new time and inspire them to create amazing, positive companies that help shape a better future and create amazing jobs. Sativa Magazine was originally started to inspire entrepreneurship in the Cannabis and hemp industries, in turn creating new businesses that create jobs and, while that remains the

central goal, the industry has asked us for more, and we have provided generously. We do it because we love what we do. We’ve been volunteers the entire way through this whole journey. We hope you’ve enjoyed it and thank you to the fans that send gratitude. We always appreciate that. This next issue will be our twelfth edition. We are growing up fast. Big changes coming soon. Thanks to you and all of our readers’ support. We greatly appreciate it and love all of you.

WHAT WE THINK We are successful because of your support. Thank you. We will continue to provide you with exciting new inspiring information that will stir desire inside you. We hope you will use that inspiration to do something amazing and world-changing. Even if just a little. We are always looking for content contributors if you have exclusive stories you’d like to provide us. We’d love to help you tell your story. Do you write well? Would you like to get published? We are always looking for exceptional talent. We are a not-for-profit company and you would be a volunteer, but it sure does feel good doing what we do. You should give it a try. It could change your life. We are looking for exceptional graphic designers as well. Again, volunteer at the moment. The right designers are going to have a lot of fun on our team. The future is going to be good and being a part of Sativa is an extremely rewarding experience. We are interested in making trades for content as well. If you know anyone that would like to market their graphic design skills to the Cannabis community, or any service a media company would need a hand with, please spread

the word. We are willing to trade ad space for design and other services. Sativa Magazine is a Seattle-based publication that will soon have many other supporting publications to help us separate and focus our attention and keep the topics of the magazine, on topic. Sativa Magazine itself is a business magazine meant to teach others how to get in the Cannabis industry or improve their current business in the industry. Currently all of our content goes into Sativa Magazine. That will change very soon. How many of our readers are looking forward to a publication that focuses breeding Cannabis with topics on how to breed Cannabis and select for specific medical benefits? It’s coming soon. We have plenty of fresh ideas coming that will play a huge part in shaping the Cannabis industry. Many of the connections we have made are now working together to build a powerhouse industry with educated legal support and many political connections. Together we will help the industry and those building it to make sure it becomes more than it is currently and we will be your leading source for Cannabis education as the future is written. We will write the future of Cannabis and hemp. In the beginning we gave away free ads to many companies that I met personally and I wanted to see succeed. I hope their ads helped. Next month we may have fewer ads, but after a year of hard work, the team would like to see a little compensation and reward for their hard work. We have created something very valuable to our readers and valuable to our advertisers as well. The companies I selected had great products, companies run by great people and they were very professional. Small business owners putting food on their families tables. I support that. I want to see them succeed, but next month we
