1. THREE ARCHITECTURAL TECTONICS Three architectural tectonics in relation to the ground are explored as preliminary design concepts.

1

2

1.1 POINT, LINE, PLANE Points arranged in a row form a line when viewed at a different scale. Lines can be perceived as a plane in the same way. When the points and the lines are reflected in a plane, they all are duplicated, resulting in a longer line.

1.2 MASS The dark space is designed to protect a secret which is at the other end. Gaps between the paths could only be observed when close by due to the darkness, therefore, inducing the sense of danger. One would tend to touch and feel the way around in this space not only due to the lack of clear vision, but also because the rough surface is the only thing which ensures that he/she would not slip and fall into the gaps.

5

Light becomes more interesting in a dark environment. Light is only allowed vertically into the space which would, otherwise, be completely dark. The rough surface along the light path casts different shapes of shadows which gradually change throughout the day. This space is only accessible via the dark space, hence, creating the notion of a hidden space to keep a secret.

1.3 FRAME AND INFILL The frame is more predominant in this structure as the infill depends on it to stay in the air without any other support. However, the frame is also kept minimal in order to create a place from where one can experience the ultimate outside view.

8

9

10

The infill is attached to the ceiling of the frame only via strings. Every time one causes a disruptive movement, the infill will be shaken and the calmness will be lost, resulting in a VERTIGO EFFECT. Instead of rigidly fixing the infill to the frame to prevent the movement by force, the structure encourages people to cooperate and control things by themselves in order to achieve and enjoy PEACE.

11

2. A PLACE FOR KEEPING SECRETS Outcomes of the three tectonic explorations are merged and linked as one: a pavilion to keep a secret on HERRING ISLAND.

SECRET The best place to hide a secret is the most visible one. Only careful and keen explorers deserve to discover a secret. However, a secret would not be a secret if no one knows there is something hidden.

12

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS This particular site on the island (red area) is chosen because it is the part of the island that one would see first while waiting for the boat, making it the perfect spot to hide a secret while providing a clue.

13

2.2 CONCEPTACLE AN

The concept is a linear and directional design with Point, Line, Plane on the ground, Mass below the ground, and Frame and Infill above the ground.

14

ND SKETCH MODEL

The sketch model incorporates the site formation into the concept design.

2.3 FINAL DESIGN Plan

Scale 1:200 @A3

The pavilion creates a journey which starts on the ground, leads into the ground and ends at the secret space above the ground. The toilet on the ground is separated from the pavilion due to the disabled access requirement. 16

The sinking columns provide a hint that there is something under the ground at the end. The perforation on the columns serves as the symbol of a clue by partially revealing whatever is at the back and attracting people to come and explore.

19

The parallel columns form a path to the entrance of the pavilion which is on the other side of the tiny hill.

The entrance leads to the long stairs with several turns which intentionally deter the light from outside, making the way down darker as it gets lower until the underground maze.

The maze is lightened from the base of the following light to find the way, one has t transformable by remotely moving the wa is to create an different formation from d who are ALWAYS KEEN to look for it. In add to create a clear space wher

At the end of the maze is a tunnel illuminated with straps of light. This part is much more straight and well lit to provoke a sense of achievement of overcoming the maze and arriving at the secret place.

21

One inside the secret space can see the outside, however, not vice versa. One outside can only experience the camouflage effect of it produced by the mirrors. However, the metal frame ensures that the secret space is not completely lost in the surrounding by drawing one’s attention to come and explore the reflecting infill.

3. REFLECTION The composition of the three architectural tectonics results in the final design for the secret project. It was a very effective approach of creating a piece of architecture, expecially when accompanied by invaluable feedbacks on design concepts as well as on graphic and model making techniques throughout the semester. The requirement to design at a real site also makes the project more interesting and practical. Overall, this is a very challenging yet rewarding studio subject. Thank You Very Much.
