‘WHAT IS LUXURY?’

‘Luxury’ the word that has so many different meanings depending on personal aspects and experiences. Some people may use this word to describe a visual of items or others may use it to suggest the expense of it. Luxury products tend to make a person feels special, comfortable or proud when having it even though it is not necessary. It is not fast producing and many people would not mind to be in the waiting list because they want to make sure that they will get high quality products. Luxury items are usually handmade and has limited quantity. The products represents the craftsmanship, signature personal style which, all of these elements, allow the user to explore a unique experience. Luxury is not the opposite of poverty but it is something that represents us who we are. It may be something we do not need to considered in terms of expense yet it is something that makes the user feel more comfortable and confident when using or having. My personal intake of luxury is mostly about service and experience. There is no exception whether it is a big or small brand, I think that the customer must come first. The store have to come up with ways to impress their customer e.g.. after service, informative product details, greeting face, positive attitude etc. Moreover, I think that luxury these days have to be more aware of the environment since they are many alternative ways of manufacturing products rather than harming animals and environment to have hands on expensive items. Finally, another thing that might be important for some groups of people is the uniqueness. Luxury products do not always come from big brands because the more rare someone can get their hands on the more special it becomes. So as we can see nowadays that many selected stores are getting more and more popular since the products are carefully selected from the designer or owner who has a unique taste that matches specific group of people.

EXPERIENCE

SERVICE

In architecture and interiors aspect, people might want to own a house that suites their life style. Expecting to experience luxurious in their personal space. This could be varies such as a centre-spa bathroom or a home cinema. In the same way to fashion, customers want to explore a whole new experience when entered into the store and not aiming for mass products that can be found everywhere.

Luxury brands not only thinking about selling their products but also consider service as a key element. They have to make sure that customers are happy with the service they had provided since customers thoughts and comments can really affect the look of the brand. Moreover, they do not impress customers in store only but provide an after sale service as well.

CONSCIOUSNESS

PERSONALISED

Nowadays, many brands aware more of environment. They try to be as much responsible as possible. For instance, in some fashion industrials, faux fur and synthetic fur are used as an alternative way instead of animal fur and also genuine leather can be replaced by synthetic leather. In similar way, architecture and interiors these days are eco-friendly and being more conscious about materials and energy in order to achieve a sustainable design.

There is a big change in the global trends. People are going for local artisan and small designer brands. The products that are available in store are more unique and not mass produced products. The selling products are carefully selected, tailored or crafted for a specific group of customers who prefer more sophisticated and unique designs.

VINTAGE ITEMS

MINIMAL STYLE CLOTHES

The reason I picked the wax sealing in my luxury inventory is because it is very hard to but one these days or it might be very expensive. The thing that make this item become even more special for me is that the stamp has my initial on it.

I believe that less is more. I never get bored of my clothes even though most of them are monotone, in fact, I will keep wearing every single of them over and over for at least 4-5 years. I always buy the one that is simple and has very nice cutting and details because I feel like they look timeless.

BOOKS & MAGAZINES

TRAVELLING

I love collecting books and magazine even though sometimes, in a very rare occasion, I do not read them. The reasons is because I buy books that are not only in Thai and English but also Japanese and French, which I can only understand some words and sentences. However, I like to explore the contents, photos, paper and layout of books.

I always feel like I pause the reality when I go travel. I travel a lot because I want to see new things. One thing I keep in mind is, even I go back to the same place again and again, every time I will find and learn something new and that will become a new experience.

Have you ever imagine yourself living on the top of the city and surrounded by a spectacular view and landmarks of London? The South Bank Tower is one of the tallest building in city. The site is a Vertical Shell inspired by South Bank Tower’s vertical design. The location is famous of its cultural centre and the space also combines a

contemporary architecture and the aspect of the space together. SITE VISIT UP IN THE SKY

The penthouse that we will be designing is located on the top 2 floors of the building. It is a spacious shell that has amazing view of London. On the top floor located 2 rooms which can see the view clearly trough both of the site. The felt unrealistic when I entered into the site. All the windows go up towards the ceiling and the air ventilate nicely through the terrace area. The surrounding area is very convenient. There are cafĂŠs and a park that is close to the site within 3-5 minutes walk. Walking along the bank about 10-15 minutes, London Eye is just right there.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

DESIGNING BY MAKING

The main process I used in order to achieve the final outcome for this project is making. I find that, personally, it is the most effective way because I really learn what works and what doesn’t work. The shape for the first model is random yet not too abstract. I created a close space so as to give a sense of interior. For the second and third model I played with geometric shape by using triangle as a main shape and build the structure up randomly. The other one, I started to come back to an idea of enclose space so, I carved an acrylic sheet in order to create a guideline for folding. However, the acrylic sheet is not flexible enough so the model still looks abstract. I try to go back and forth between using linear and geometric design and really try to make some products out of it, in this case, I created furniture. I relate the design to the group concept as well so, I use the idea of geometric shape to make a bigger structure which finally became the terrace. The outdoor area has a very abstract shape but still functional since we decided to make a swimming pool area for the user to relax and party. This apply the same to all of the furniture, they are designed to fit perfectly with the body of the user and posture. We want to create a space for only one user to make him feel comfortable the most when living inside.

BESPOKE DESIGN

The number of smart technologies that can be integrated into our homes seems endless. It plays an important role in interior and architecture these days. People like it due to the fact that it makes their life much easier, less boring and, more importantly, invisible. We use technology to create a private space for the user and try to make something that will fit his body and posture, it is all about identity design. It is a challenging concept to play with technology but, at the same time, we find that it is very exciting and interesting and we believe that our final design will look incredible.

THE SIX for ME SPACE

ONE DESIGN FOR ONE USER

This project wouldn’t be completed if there wasn’t a good starting point. As mentioned before, my personal thought about luxury is about technology that could improve the way of living. I also relate my idea to fast changing interior as well since technology could be an element that changes the space and the atmosphere within it. The other ideas from the members in my group of ‘What is Luxury?’ are; - The preciousness of having siblings, which later become a DNA story. - The heat mapping, developed from the idea of time changing. - The human form. - Wonderful moment and experience when travel. - Controlling; the ability to be able to control everything as the user want. So, when putting the concepts together we had a similar thought that we could create a space for someone who is very into himself. The design should speaks out his identity and lifestyle, hence, we managed to design a bespoke interior for this person.

DESIGN PRECEDENTS

INVOLUTION 2012 Savannah College of Art and Design This installation called for the mutation of the prototypical “arch” element in a manner that would reevaluate space, enclosure, procession, and affect. A series of transformations upon the arch were induced, transforming the symmetrical mass into a nuanced, sculptural surface. Starting with the reorientation of the span’s symmetrical base, the movement incurred by this shift lends itself to an interactive topological span. Each act upon the strictly ruled archetype would subtly disassemble the form as we once recognized it.

TEXTILE FEILD 2011 Rowan & Erwan Bouroullec The design intention is to propose a different, casual approach to freely experience what can be a quite intimidating environment, such as a museum. The installation is made out of coloured foam and textile piece with gentle inclinations to produce a sensual field on which to comfortably lounge while meditating on the surrounding Raphael Cartoons. Everyone can immerse into this temporary installation, for a minute, an hour or more, that is the idea. No efforts, no apprehension just contemplation.

KEY ELEMENTS

UNIQUE DESIGN FOR UNIQUE USER

We design a space by using four key elements. The aim of our design is to create a space for a user that wants a very private lifestyle. Every pieces of furniture and the space itself is designed to be suitable and make the user to feel the most comfortable. The most stand out element is the chandelier stairs which inspired from DNA structure. At first, we only designed the chandelier stairs to end on the platform of the second floor yet later we feel that it is nicer to make the structure continues to the top of the apartment. Moreover, by designing the stairs to suspend from the ceiling it makes the stairs look like there is no ending. For the cloud-like ceiling, it was designed to fill the entire ceiling at first. Later when we put all the other structures in we noticed that everything clashes together. So, we decide to curve in the middle part of the shape in order not to make the interior looks too packed. As mentioned before that the interactive technology is involved in our design, the colour of the cloud will adjust automatically during the day and night to make the user feel relax and comfortable. The resting area is created as an enclose space and sits on the top of the room in order to allow the user to be ever higher and have more privacy. The structure connects directly with the chandelier stairs that sits in the centre of the room. The outside is an area that created as an indoor pool for partying and relaxing. The structure adopted the design of the ceiling yet make it even more interesting by wrapping the entire space in a cloud structure. It gives a feeling of the in between since the space it actually outside yet has another layer covers over the top.

ME SPACE

LIVING IN A CLOUD

Our concept is a bespoke cloud for one user who is obsessed with privacy. When visiting the site we noticed that the tower is located in the heart of London and has a spectacular view of the city so, we came up with the idea of living high up in the cloud. We want to provide the user a whole new experience and want him to have a freedom to dream that he is living in a personal bubble. The environment is a combination of technology and privacy. He can control the environment within the space however he likes and also there is a clear separation of privacy and sharing space that parted by another main interior structure – chandelier stairs. The design intention is to make the user has less interaction by creating an interior that both the user and the interior have a small settle moves yet fulfil the lifestyle. Starting from the idea creating a unique space for a single user, we constantly try out some other designs as well. For instance, landscape interior that make the space looks like it is an installation, or a movable platform that can create a private space for the user by moving the upper and lower floor together. However, we finally come up with the final design that we balanced everything out and make them flow together in the same way.
