hether you plan to build your own home from the ground up or just want to understand what’s going on as the building process unfolds, there’s a learning opportunity that’s right for you.
SEMINARS
Typically sponsored by a show producer or log home company, seminars are usually held in conjunction with a home show or at a log home company’s facility. You can expect these seminars to range in length from a few hours to a full day or two. At a seminar, you might: Listen to presentations on the process of designing and building a log home
Learn more about construction, design and finance See photos and videos of manufacturing and construction Tour a finished home or construction site Tour manufacturing facilities Why attend a seminar? You’ll receive a good overview of the process and start to feel more at ease about designing and purchasing a custom home. A seminar hosted by a log home company should introduce you to the company’s log material package and allow you to get a feel for the company, its products and its people.
WORKSHOPS
Sponsored by a log home producer, an independent building
school or a big-box retail store, workshops typically take a hands-on approach that will get you physically involved with the subject matter. Workshops may last a few hours or a full day or two, depending on the material to be covered. For instance, a workshop might teach a single topic, such as wall tiling or log scribing, or could cover the entire log home construction process. In a workshop, you might: Participate in log cutting or stacking Learn how logs are fastened together and practice installing those fasteners Apply chinking to a log wall Learn how to apply wood treatments or stains Practice installing tile or flooring
Satterwhite Seminar & Workshop Longview, Texas Spring & Fall The Satterwhite Seminar and Workshop is the most in-depth program produced and presented by Satterwhite Log Homes covering specific hands-on aspects of building using the Satterwhite building system. The course covers a lot of ground fast, and can save months of research time. The first day features the full Satterwhite Log Homes Seminar presented by Sam Satterwhite. The second day is divided into elective tracts on a wide variety of topics. Want to know more about how house logs are manufactured? Join Sam Satterwhite for a tour of our Longview mill and watch as logs are made. Choose between three breakout sessions each hour, covering financing, planning and design, finish contracting, etc. Bring your camera – this event includes a whirlwind tour of a wide assortment of Satterwhite homes and specialty log buildings as well as an evening cookout at the Double S Ranch. Why take a workshop? You’ll leave with deeper knowledge of a single topic or a more in-depth understanding of the construction process overall. You can practice a building technique under the watchful eye of an instructor. A workshop could provide you with a closer look at a log home company you’re considering and a feel for the quality of their products. Finally, if you plan to take on some of the building process yourself, a workshop will help you decide if you’re truly up to the task.
LOG HOME SCHOOLS
Sponsored by an independent school or college or by log home handcrafters, log home school programs often last a week or more, and fully immerse participants in the process of building an entire log home or a log exterior shell. At a school, expect to: Learn how to cut and stack logs by handling all the materials Work with classmates to build a small cabin or structure Take on the physical labor involved with home building Why enroll in a log home school program? If you plan to cut and stack your own logs or work closely with a handcrafter, time at a school will be invaluable. Maybe you’re planning to build a small outbuilding out of logs—a school would give you the skills needed to take on the project successfully.
