While scrolling through the Singapore Fashion Week’s website and reading the many features out there in the internet featuring this event, I couldn’t help but recap standing in front of my class back in school, pitching to my classmates about this oh-so-awesome idea I came up with, and how it would one day become the most well read material in the country. Then, I was a fresh writer, writing for a local publishing house, writing technology. I took up Mass Communications just to better understand the media as a whole, and of course, hoping that I would be able to get a promotion in time to come.

The course took about nine months to complete, reasonable enough. But like every diploma course, whether full-time or otherwise, there’s the final project to produce. For some reason, the tech blogger/writer I was, I decided to base my project on fashion. Rather amusing, I’d say. Then, I knew nothing about the industry; I hardly wear dresses or heels. Research, research and more research; I think the only think I really did for this project was read. I’m good at reading and memorising, really. Little did I know, while had subtly fallen in love with this new plaything. What I presented that fateful day was what you see today, this note, these pages, and this magazine. That day, I created SAUCEink, and today, you’re flipping it. Combining tech and fashion, we now have, SAUCEink.

Every year Pantone releases the colour of the year, and all the women go crazy hunting for clothes, shoes, bags, and even eyeshadow and lippies in that colour. While the colour of the year may be new and trendy, no colour can topple the classic white. White is a no fail chic colour in the fashion world. A white button down top is a must in any woman’s closet, a plain white tee is the best weapon for layering, and even the LWD is slowly catching up to the legend that the LBD has made for itself. If Giorgio Armani thinks that the T-shirt is the alpha and omega of fashion, the colour white is the alpha and omega of the colour palette.

Q: Can you share with us a bit of the background of your blog? A colorful diary of fashion, lifestyle, and travel of a former Professional Latin Dancer turned Fashion Blogger. Q: Why did you decide to start a blog? I was lonely and homesick when I studied in Malaysia. I had no one to talk to so I started a blog to talk to myself and to capture my life stories. After 6 years, I got bored of writing about sad memories and random topics. I wanted to focus on one specific topic and I chose Fashion. Q: Why did you choose to decide to focus on fashion? Since I was a little girl, I have always loved playing dress up. When I started dancing, dresses and accessories were always part of my daily outfits (except for school uniforms). I was also encouraged by my friends to start sharing my fashion tips and styles to other people. That’s when I decided to start crystalphuong.net. Q: With the number of fashion blogs popping up, what makes your blog different? My blog is a reflection of my life, my personality, and my way thinking. Q: What for you is the best thing about being a fashion blogger? Being able to express myself through what I wear, what I write on my blog and knowing that there are people interested in reading/ seeing it. Q: What is the best and worst feedback / comment you have received so far? Best comment: Your blog is very inspiring. Worst comment: I can’t remember. I don’t like to keep negativity in my mind. Q: I’m sure there are many aspiring bloggers out there. Do you have any advice for them? Be passionate, be consistent and never give up. Q: Complete this sentence: “My style is…” Feminine, sophisticated, and chic. Q: Complete this sentence: “People should visit my blog because…” Because it’s FREE. Q: Any last words? Live happily, love passionately and never take anything for granted. JUNE 2015

Boy meets girl. Edge meets

glamour.

Boy meets girl. Edge meets glamour. It’s a typical good-girl-gone-bad outfit for the weekend that surprisingly makes me feel free and alive. It felt as if I found a missing piece of myself in this outfit. I found a fearless, sassy, and sexy Crystal compared to the elegant, sophisticated, and classy one from Monday to Friday. I don’t know which Crystal I like it better, but I know for sure, I’m going to explore more different styles in the next few months. Have you ever tried to dress up differently from what you normally do and found out that you love the new style so much? That’s what I’m experiencing right now.

“But believe me, it’s going to be big and exciting.” It’s hard not to notice a midi dress like this on the street, especially when it comes in a vibrant shade of blue and sexy wrap details. I picked this dress for a special collaboration with PRINCESSA by Sabrina Wang. I can’t reveal any information about the collaboration just yet, but believe me, it’s going to be big and exciting. Besides the striking color, I absolutely love the wrapped bottom that shows a little bit of skin, leaving just enough to the imagination. When I first saw this dress on the lookbook, I thought I can wear it to work but I changed my mind after I tried it on. With a classic sweetheart neckline, light ruched waist, and asymmetrical hemline, this dress seems to be a perfect ensemble for the coming Valentine’s Day, Friday night or a party.

I’d love to help and see other women to be confident, to be strong, to look good and feel good about themselves when they wear my clothes. That’s what November 5th brand is all about. Q: Why did you decide to open your fashion brand? I love clothes and I’m addicted to online shopping. Thus, having my own fashion brand has always been one of my biggest dreams. It satisfies my passion and addiction. Although, I won’t buy from my own store, I can spend hours browsing it. Q: Do you work alone or do you have partners? Care to share a bit about yourself and (if any) your team? Yes. I do have a super powerful partnerSabrina. She focuses on the operation while I focus on creativity and designs. O ne of the many reasons why I love weekends is I have a chance to wear some clothes that I don’t get to wear on weekdays at work. This off the shoulder lace dress is an example.

I have a huge obsession for lace. It’s such an ethereal and delicate fabric that can make any women look soft and feminine in a second. But it is also a picky material as not every woman can look beautiful in it. There is a very thin line between classy and trashy. I love how this dress goes easy on the waist and leaves full attention to the off the shoulders. The loose fitting also makes it so comfortable to wear. I’ve seen some people wear a similar dress to a night club or on a date. I couldn’t help but think of wearing it to a beach party or go for a walk in the garden instead. A full bloom garden, a beautiful lace dress, and a straw hat, this looks like a perfect weekend to me. www . S A UC E I N K , C O M

“Seven Reasons Why IPL & Other Machine Hair Removal Should Be Done ONLY At A SALON

(And When It Is A Good Idea To Do It At Home)” I don’t know about you, but every single month I have to go through a torture called “waxing”. As a woman, I know that in my life I can’t escape death, taxes and the removal of unwanted hair. Fortunately, technology brought us not only cars, smartphones and Instagram, but also advanced permanent and semi-permanent hair removal solutions. Among these are IPL (intense pulse light) and laser. These treatments are efficient because they eliminate the root of the hair, limiting or eliminating future growth by up to 75%. In today’s article - we will cover IPL (virtually all other similar technologies function in a similar manner - with IPL being the best bang for the money). We will mention what it is, where you can do it and most importantly, why it is important to have it done only at a specialized and reputable salon.

What Is IPL? (intense pulse light)

IPL is a very powerful lamp that emits light on a very specific wavelength. This light travels through the skin to destroy the root of the hair. The reason why hair always grows back when you wax / shave it is that you are only eliminating the hair itself but not the root. If these roots are destroyed, hair will not have the ability to grow back. The new roots will become “active” in time and hair will eventually grow, but this is a very slow process and IPL is the closest possible thing to safe permanent hair removal. 38

iss u u . c o m / sa u c ein k

B E A U T Y S N I P P E T: J A PA N I P L E D I T O R I A L

There are several types of IPL machines all of which follow the same principle, but only in a different manner. Among these are:

SHR.

It uses a gradual heat build-up which is more comfortable than traditional IPL.

E-light.

It uses not only IPL technology but also electrical energy to target the hair follicle. It is considered more efficient than traditional IPL.

LHE (Light Heat Energy). Similar to SHR but a bit less comfortable.

VPL (Variable Pulsed Light).

It can be adapted to

different needs by changing how the pulses of light are emitted.

Who is IPL for? IPL can be used both by women and men. It is used mostly for hair removal but it can also be used for photorejuvenation and treatment of dermatologic disease. IPL is for you if you want to decrease hair growth dramatically in a easy and painless manner. Right now, there are two main options for using IPL. You can either go to a salon, or you can buy a home IPL kit, but here are a couple of reasons why you should have it done at a salon especially if you’re new to IPL.

Very good service and cheap. Worth the price.

It took me about 5 minutes for facial and about 15 minutes for my brazilian area and tadaaaaaa! I am done!! That was how fast it was!!

Really friendly staff and extremely quick painless results :)

B E A U T Y S N I P P E T: J A PA N I P L E D I T O R I A L

Reasons Why IPL Treatments Should Be Done At A Saloon

Reason #1 - Price. IPL is a rather expensive technology. A home based kit right now costs around $400 to $700. Since IPL is a technology that shows fast results, investing a lot of money for a home based kit just to leave it in your drawers afterwards is not very practical.

Reason #2 -

Safety. In a beauty salon, the IPL is configured accurately to match your skin tone, skin sensitivity and your skin is externally cooled in order to prevent pain or aesthetic damage. IPL is a powerful technology and without proper guidance, it can easily burn the skin. While home based devices are far less powerful, at least for the first timers, you should test IPL with someone who knows how to use it - to see how your skin reacts to it.

Reason #3 - Protection. Skin types dif-

fer from one person to another. Some people need a stronger light impulse to eliminate the root while others do not. Only a person that has been trained can give you the best possible IPL treatment. Otherwise it will be too little (no effect), too much (pain, possible skin burn) or not frequent enough (not long lasting).

Reason #4 - Comfort. When it comes

to professional based IPL equipment, the skin is cooled in order to compensate for the intense heat. It is common for someone who is trying IPL even for the first time to feel nothing or close to nothing during the procedure. This is not a comfort that you may have at home because just like any other light based technology, prolonged or incorrect use of a home device may lead to pain and skin damage.

B E A U T Y S N I P P E T: J A PA N I P L E D I T O R I A L

When It Is A Good Idea To Buy A Home Based IPL Device? This technology is rather new and expensive. My suggestion is to wait a few more months until it becomes cheaper. Some benefits of using IPL at home are the device may be used by several people. You can use it on any area of your body. If you will use it on a common basis, it will save you a lot of money too. Some of the higher-end devices are very configurable and rival professional models. However, you do need to be careful with IPL. It is not a toy. IPL in a way is a very intense heat ray that goes through the skin. Even when you try IPL at a salon, you need to pick a salon with a good reputation. There are many negative stories about how technicians were not prepared to operate the device and they’ve cause semi-permanent or permanent skin damage. So you need to be careful with this. My suggestion is to use IPL first at a salon and if you want, in the future, invest in a device. In the meantime, watch carefully how it is used and feel free to ask many questions. IPL is effective on its own so your only concern is safety.

Shaping your

brows

The position of brows on a face makes it hard to ignore. This is precisely why, apart from one’s eyes, eyebrows can determine the first impression you give to others. Depending on the position of your brows, it can alter your facial expression and exude an entirely different feeling and character altogether.

What is a desirable

brow shape?

Perfect brows should be shaped like a crescent. The desirable gap between the brows should be about two-finger spacing. In order to create the right shape, you need to find the right starting point for your brows, determine the right length and find your arch. There should be one-finger spacing between the brows and the eye. Next, the brow hairs should be neatly trimmed. If the hairs at the head of the brow are standing, it means one is likely to be distractible and worried. Hence, the individual needs to use a brow comb to brush from down to up when shaping their brows.

Different brow

shapes

There are far and few individuals with the perfect brow shape. Below are the various brows one might have.

Dao zi brow- brow shape resembling the Chinese character ‘knife’

Brow interspersed with many spaces

Thin and dispersed brows Straight brow Ba zi brow- brow shape resembling the downward stroke of the Chinese char-

Sword brow- brow shape liken to the shape of a sword that is pointed at the tail

“It’s definitely getting hot out there, won’t it be nice to head off to the beach over the weekend for a tranquil retreat? Since I’m not up for any activities other then chilling around the beach while looking at the sea, I decided to take on a boho look with my white flowy dress from Princessa and a motif vest which I got from a vintage store on my last trip to Bangkok. Well being a boho 90s chic here, a typical hippie can never leave out layers of accessories like chokers, rings and necklaces.”

“Hip-hop trend was over during the 00s which was then inspired from the 80s, but it seems like it is coming back for good. Getting inspired by the hip-hop culture, I blended that style with my favourite 90s culture and pulled the style together in ways to define my personality. As usual, in my odd ways, I’m always in comfort by being different, so I had my hair tied up in two buns, match the baseball dress with an oversized bomber jacket and get all cosy with my sandals and socks combination.” Dress, THE YUB Black Pulse Ring, THE YUB Sandals, URBAN OUTFITTERS Bomber Jacket, OBEY Photos by KENNY

“You don’t have to be a bitch to be successful” I don’t know what I want to do, but I know exactly the woman I want to become. I want to lead my own life, have my own money, support myself and my family- not the type of woman who just sits there and waits for a man to feed her. A woman who is happy, effortless, capable, independent, and most importantly, kind. That’s the woman I want to be. “You don’t have to be a bitch to be successful”- said my true inspiration, Diane von Furstenberg. Have you ever thought of what woman you want to be? JUNE 2015

fever

I took the courage to wear a deep V-neck dress on the second day of Singapore Fashion Week. I bought this dress for quite some time and haven’t had a chance to wear it. Although, I don’t really go out clubbing so much, I like to buy party dresses. They are beautiful and can accentuate a women’s curve at the right place. Unfortunately, such revealing dresses like this can only be reserved for the right occasion, I still have 4 to 5 new dresses hanging in my closet for a couple of years. Luckily, Singapore Fashion Week happened at night. It was a perfect excuse to dress up a little bit more over the top than usual.

VICTORIA BECKHAM A/W 2015

There was so much enthusiasm, excitement, and of course heat in the Tent@Orchard on the last day of Singapore Fashion Week. The big venue became so small for hundreds of people, decked in their best outfit, trying to catch a glimpse of Victoria Beckham and to watch her first fashion show in Singapore. Thank you so much for showing Singapore what you do best, Victoria Beckham!

F E A T UR E : I N S I D E R - S I N G A P O R E F A S H I O N W E E K

I have never felt so strongly inspired and moved while watching a collection on the runway before. I was so fortunate to be able to watch my favorite designer’s show up close and I finally found the woman who I wanted to be. She is a DVF woman. She is fun, chic, effortless, strong, powerful, and of course, seductive.

THAKOON FALL 2015 Thakoon’s designs have always been described as “timelessly feminine” and “as romantic and sensual as they are modern and innovative”. This Fall collection was an obvious example to prove that statement!
