EXPERIMENTAL ART & MUSIC CENTRE The proposed programme for this project is an attraction and a place for the youth and young people to learn music and art. With this programme, the main objectives of this project can be achieve and can create a new community for music and art. Other than that, this programme will provide a live, work and a fun space which the visitors can have fun integrating and plays with music and art. The the lower ground floor and the first floor of the building is dedicated mainly for this purpose. The temporary gallery are mostly rent out to the local community or an art artist to exhibits their work and they can also sell their arts to the visitors or art lovers. On the bright side, this programme can bring back and promote the Rakan Muda Centre All in all, The aim for this programme is to bring back the music and art’s identity. This will attracting the locals and non-locals to the site to witness a project that would combine the old and the fresh new Petaling Jaya together. We believe that no one should be limited to what a creativity centre really should be. Activity suggestions act only as a guidance, likewise how we are trying to suggest ways to nurture the potential young creative talents in PJ. Our final verdict will still be based on our very own perception of creativity and that’s where the real magic happens.
09
ISSUES
In terms of the rich variety of art forms carried out in the schools, the schools fail to provide the much needed audience for wider exposure as the schools seldom bring students out for competitions or invite visitors in to enjoy the performances.
Art scene was sometimes taken for granted Illegal graffiti can be found in quiet parts of the area and the street performers are not exposed to the right audience since the street was not a dedicated performing area.
10
The project programme is to provide a Centre for Creativity, an avenue for arts and other outlets for the youth to channel their creative and artistic energy.

SITE INTRODUCTION Petaling Jaya, better known as PJ, is one of Selangor’s earliest developed townships. Surrounded by the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur to the east, the Gombak District to the north, the capital of Selangor, Shah Alam to the west and Subang Jaya to the south, PJ was naturally a strategic township that is enjoyed by both the locals and visitors. Being such a valuable and desired location, it is hard to believe that an approximate of 6000 sqm land was left empty. To fully utilise the site to its fullest potential, necessary site info and data were collected and being analysed. Sun path was being studied as light and shadow play a huge role in building design orientation. To further understand the site’s potential, wind direction and intensity was also studied to aid passive design strategy. Besides, the landscape itself is especially interesting as it generally has 3 major contour layers and possesses numerous lush and mature trees. Around the site, renowned landmarks such as Assunta Hospital, Rakan Muda Complex, MBPJ Tower, UiTM, Masjid Jamek, Wisma Perkeso, SMK Assunta and PKNS Tower are easily identified. Alongside these major landmarks, numerous of elderly centres, schools, churches, temples and also a community library is found. All these establishments has brought about many perks and opportunities for the locals and also liven up the township as a whole. Also based on the figure ground diagram, we can see that there are various voids in that area. Most buildings have extra land around them and can be considered a fairly spacious and comfortable township to live in as compared to busy urban cities like those in KL. There are minimal high rise apartments around and possesses a balanced architectural landscape.

COMPETITION
TINY HOMES THE ELPIS FACTORY This competition is an opportunity for architects, students, artists and members of the public to propose new solutions to Chicago’s affordable housing shortage by designing a Tiny Homes community in Chicago’s historic Bronzeville neighborhood as a prototype for future development possibilities. This competition was launched in conjunction with the Tiny Homes Summit, taking placeApril 18–19, 2016, at the University of Illinois to Chicago.
17
THE BOX OF HOPE According to the 2015 Chicago Homeless Count and Survey conducted by the City of Chicago, 31% of the unsheltered homeless population and 19% of those that are sheltered are between the ages of 18 and 24 years old. Though these numbers are startling, many of the city’s homeless young adults are actively working to improve their quality of life One predictor of adult homelessness is youth homelessness, and permanent housing for homeless young adults is a long-term investment in Chicago’s future.

THE ELPIS FACTORY BOX OF HOPE Elpis, Hope (or, “Expectation”); The only content left that laid at the bottom of the jar (Pandora’s box) Hesiod, Works and Days 83-108; Gantz, pp 156-157 With the target users of 18-24 year old homeless, the aim of our project is to create boxes of hope and a community that can pursue their dreams and have a place to bloom their personas and creative ideas that can turn into basically, jobs to sustain their lives. We believe that with this range of age, they are to be groomed individually and also morally within a community. Better enough, to design a shelter that can motivate them to do so.
BOX OF HOPE + HANGING The basic concept of our design is to create the feeling of opportunity. Each unit of ours is designed to look as individualistic in a way to show that each user is individual but at the same time united under one roof. This collection of units is also “hung” from above to showcase the idea that these individuals with their dreams can work out as high as possible and it creates an active atmostphere where they can create a communicative environment that is limitless within the building since the voids help open up the solidness between each level.
BOX OF HOPE + HANGING + ENVELOPE As a whole, the look we tailor for is the manufacturing shelter where we “manufacture” our users’ creativity and motivation through design such that the positive atmosphere shall help not only them, but the public to how they see and distinguish the idea of a homeles shelter for teenagers and young adults.

We will obtain a variance for the communal structure; however, the houses must be connected in some physical capacity—not unlike a row of townhomes. URBAN INFILL MUSIC STUDIO MARKET For the rest of the semester, students will concentrate on designing a contemporary market-place within an urban infill site. The design of the building is to consist of appropriate architectural responses that address the aspects of the urban street context and user behavioural patterns as discerned and analysed in the Preliminary Studies. Apart from developing an appropriate formal and elevational strategy in response to the character of the street, the design should take into consideration a holistic application of structural, spatial, functional and environmental requirements to address the user needs for an urban market-place. The design development of this project will include an introduction to the legislative restrictions that impact an architectural scheme, the integration of lighting and acoustic design, as well as the design exploration and detailing of the faรงade and building envelopes that is coherent with the architectural language of the overall design project.

MUSIC STUDIO & MARKET CHOW KIT is enclosed by parallel streets; Jalan Raja Laut and Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. Today it features a large Indonesian Company. Chow kit is well known for its Bazaar Baru Chow Kit. Massive defelopments of urban structures to facilitate wholesale businesses, multinational firms, large scale residential buildings, public transportation and teh largest wet market in Kuala Lumpur are seen to accomodate the dense population of the area.

THE VIBE STUDIO MARKET MUSIC MARKET is a market + music art center that is located at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. The aim of this project is to celebrate the culture of music as well as the artists that can provide them income by selling their arts and mainly as an effort to spread their own materials of music around Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman that houses historical building which has become part of the Malaysia history and identity. The location of the site also will helps create a new major nodes in the area and adding something new and different. The flexible programme of this building varies from function such as an music market, exhibition, recording studio, music library, and etc.
SITE ISSUES Hard to interact with food stalls or restaurant which is only located at specific spaces. Other than that, there is no edequate for walking area. Mostly around chow kit area not providing bench for people around there. The shading area is not very convinient for the people to have a shading. This can cause people to refrain from the area itself. The buildings and the arrangement plan of the site is not disable friendly. the disable have their own hard time to come to the Chow Kit and enjoy their day. And they lack of heritage appreciation and restoration which is the heritage value is not in a good care. For accessibility is hard to access using private transport because the area of chow kit have limited space for car parking but have a lot of bike and motorcycles parking space.

35
The proposed programme for this site is for the music market place an indie niche, a quiet refuge in a bustling streets; Like the interval of the chord progression but celebrating the pattern of the strophic forms; a place where the instrumental voice is louder. Music has long been a common sight in Malaysia, but for years it had served to drive a wedge between youth culture and local government, which is not been spread their music materials because of not in any label or not enough quality of music.

Chow Kit Road or known locally as Jalan Chow Kit is located in Chow Kit, a sub-district in central Kuala Lumpur. Named after the tin miner and municipal councilor Loke Chow Kit, Chow kit is home to a number of foreign communities which includes Indonesians, Pakistani, Bangladeshis, and more recently African which together with existing local communities adds to cultural diversity of the area.
The louvres act as the shade for the building
This diversity can best be seen in the markets and plazas where these people gather to conduct business and sell a variety of goods. A sprawling district of markets and shop house, strung out along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, It has a daily wet market known as Bazaar Baru Chow Kit, the largest wet market in Kuala Lumpur and interestingly, a popular tourist attraction. Chow kit road is also famous for its night markets known as Bundle Chow Kit located along Lorong Haji Taib which is known for the sale of used clothing and accessories. The market is always bustling, and often lasts into the early hours. As one walk along this unique Asian road it becomes apparent that trading and business is where Chow Kit truly comes alive.

S CAT T E R E D ARCHITECTURE NATURE APPRECIATION CENTRE This project calls for a design of a simple public building with some complexity that includes the complexity of site topography and vegetation, socio-cultural events, and variety of strategies for sustainable design. It explores design solutions that harness environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability through a project with a specific community of users. Students explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilising clustered spatial typology and passive design approach. The design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with nature and the site, and provide the best of experiences for the users.

HERB PLANTING & NATURE THE SITE is located in Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak. Pulau Banding is a 243-hectare manmade island located within the majestic Temenggor Lake. The Island sits amidst the 130 million year-old Belum Rainforest, known for nature based activities such as fishing, bird watching, camping and visiting orang asli settlements. EMKAY Group, the owner and caretaker of the Island, envisions the development of Banding Island as a vital introduction to Royal Belum State Park and aims to position it as a premier heritage destination on the world ecotourism map. It operates the Belum Rainforest Resort that offers opportunity to get up close and personal with the natural world.

HERB PLANTING NATURE RESERVE HERB PLANTING Nature Reserve is used as a therapy for relaxing, aroma which lead towards appreciating nature towards herbing and traditional medicine. The aim of this project is for the visitors can actually escape from the pressure of the city to visits the nature centre for relaxing their mind. Other than that, they can also learn about nature and the uses of nature surrounding which most likely learning back to basic skills. Most of the target users for this nature appreciation centre is likely for all the tourist around the world from every kind of people including the locals. The herb can be used for tea herb seasoning, aroma therapy, relaxing their mind, and it also can be serve the food using the herb itself. The building and the nature is blend together with an appropiate arrangement where the nature covers the side part of the location and the man-made is blend in with the center of the attractions.
45
ISSUES Some of the important area of the site is surrounded by trees, lake can only be seen when at the sideline of the hills. Other than that, the area which is surrounded by trees but centre area is overly exposed, thus shading is less efficient in the afternoon.
The site problem is that it has no cliff to separate land and lake, easy corrosion for certain materials. Lesser greeneries around, indication of soil being not too stable, erosion might happen.
For accessibility is hard to walk because some of the part consist of the land is very steep. And there are past structures destroyed and left unattended (Potential risk) and quite slippery and wet after rain.
46
The site and the arrangement plan of the site is not disable friendly. the disable have their own hard time to come to the Tanjung Satu. And they lack of heritage appreciation and restoration which is the heritage value is not in a good care.

SITE INTRODUCTION BELUM RAINFOREST RESORT Pulau Banding, Perak BELUM/PULAU BANDING LOCATION : - Northeast of Ipoh, the 3rd biggest city in Malaysia. - Midway of East - West Expressway from Kedah, Penang and Perak To Kelantan. - Only gateway to Belum Temenggor State Park. With 130 million years of age and encompassing 300,000 hectares, Belum - Temenggor Rainforest remains one of the largest untouched forest reserves in Peninsular Malaysia. Surrounded by the majestic lake, The immediate context is magnificently framed with the hills overlapping each other by creating a picturesque landscape The entire forest of Belum and Temenggor was considered a ‘black area’ and was placed under a State of Emergency from 1948 until 1989. The Communist Party of Malaya was extremely active in that area according to sources; The East - West Highway proposed by an army General believed cutting a road through the area would hamper the communist’s movements. The Temenggor Dam was built on during this dark period to resist the communist activities. Hoping to flush out the communist hiding spots; the water flooded the area and hence the Island Of Banding was born. However, this road was constantly under threat of bombed and sabotaged renegandes. Peace has since reigned over the area after the signing of the Haadyai Accord in 1989.

Nature finds a way to survive that is how it has always been. But today with climate changes and to make way for modernisation, our natural heritage is declining rapidly or is on the verge of vanishing. And that is exactly what is distinct to the unspoiled Belum-Temengor Rainforest. It is home to fourteen of the world’s most threatened mammals such as the: • • • • • •
Malaysian Tiger Malaysian Sun Bear Sumatran Rhinoceros White-handed Gibbon Asiatic Elephant Malayan Tapir
If we cherish like we usually do with rare and beautiful objects, you will find that living organisms in this natural phenomenon are of the highest magnitude. If you are fortunate enough to be at the right time and place, you will be able to spot the rare Plain-pouched Hornbill which can only be found in here. The Belum-Temengor Rainforest complex houses over 3,000 species of flora. One of which is the majestic Rafflesia Azlanii which saves her beauty for the lucky few. If that is not an indication of a natural phenomenon what about the 64 species of ferns, one of which seems blue from one angle, then green from another and then blue-green, as if a metamorphosis is taking place right before your very eyes. Then there are the mosses, 62 species that are already discovered with 4 of those species not existing anywhere else in the world. A botanist’s dream comes true. The lake itself is home to 23 species of freshwater fish and 5 species of turtles.

GENIUS LOCI VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE The Design brief calls for an architectural response to design an Interpretive Centre emphasising a strong engagement and relationship to the site, spatial experieces and programmatic requirements. In Roman mythology a Genius loci was the protective spirit of a place. In contemporary usage, “genius loci” usually refers to a location’s distinctive atmosphere, or a “spirit of place”. The concept of “genius loci” has been discussed in modern architecture, but still is much underestimated. Each city has a unique ‘spirit of place,’ or a distinctive atmosphere, that goes beyond the built environment. This urban context reflects how a city functions in ‘real time’ as people move through time and space. Viewed through this lens, the architecture and physical infrastructure of a city give way to the rhythms of the passing of the day and transition of the seasons. This provides the ‘temporal spectacles’ that define a city.
53
THE SPIRIT OF PLACE THE SITE itself create a nice view of the coastal cliffs and the rocky shores. One of Singapore’s four protected nature reserves, Labrador Nature Reserve provides a safe haven for biodiversity. Experience the fascinating connection between the landscape and historical themes by tracing the journey back to the 1870s. In addition to being rich in wartime and maritime history, the Reserve has a rich range of coastal plants that have interesting features which help them survive in the harsh, windy environment

ANALYSIS
57
1. Temperature fluctuates, lower temperature from morning to midday to higher temperature during the noon till evening and gradually drops across the night. Average temperature of 26 °C.
3. The month of June is recorded as the driest weather while in December is recorded the wettest weather. The probability of rainfall in a single day is about 0.5.
2. Relative humidity is lower along this site (coastal area) due to presence of moving air and wind and relatively higher when moving towards the forest.
4. The wind analysis can be identified coming from the Southern East towards the park.
SCATTERED MEMORIES THE BUILT form is designed to allow visitors to find their own way through the interpretive elements, providing a journey that encourages exploration. The visitor can discover and learn at their own pace and piece together the interpretive elements and experience of the building and landscape in their own way. The architectural design reinforces this approach to by providing multiple pathways through and around the interpretive displays and concrete walls. The visitor has an ‘unfolding’ spatial experience where views are gradually revealed as one moves through the space, finishing with theatrical views out to the coast and across the sea itself. The concept idea is to allow the visitors to realise aboute the awareness of the historic event in this Labrador Nature Reserve and create a sense of appreciation from the past. The idea of CONTRAST comes from the characteristic of the machine gun post which represent of clousure and opening in the relationship of between outside and inside. The shape and the location itself represent the contrast between the nature environment and man-made.

SITE INTRODUCTION LABRADOR NATURE RESERVE PARK , Singapore Also known as Labrador park, it is located at the southern part of mainland singapore. This nature reserve is a home to the only rocky sea-cliff on the mainland. Besides, this park is also rich in history and showcases many remnants or war relics left by the British dated back to the WWII. Initially, this park was a defensive for against the japanese as guns and fences were built but however, much equipment was put to waste as the great defense strategy causes absence of enemies. Later on, the function of this park was laterfocused on nature rather than being defensive as to preserve the flora and fauna. For example, the rocky shore and coral reef which are dominant along the coastal area. Given three sites to choose from, i’ve chosen the coastal area based on personal preferences. For instance, i believe that this site has much to explore and has many considerations I would like to takle. Apart from that, this site also offers greater senses like having the view of the scenic sea with industrialsim dominating one side and nature on the others as compared to the other two sites which offers less. Labrador Nature Reserve is gazetted reserve containing an indigenous ecosystem that houses Singapore’s rich biodiversity. This includes Singapore’s only protected coastal cliff vegetation and rocky shore. This rock outcrop used to served as the gateway to Keppel Harbour’s western entrance, acting as a navigational guide to sailors traveling through the narrow channel. The landmark was blown up in 1848 to widen the channel for modern ships to sail through. What stands today is a symbolic replica of the original. It was installed in 2005 for the commemoration of the Singapore Celebrations for the 600th Anniversary of Admiral Zheng He, the famouse chinese explorer
