Our city was founded on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the New Credit, and before them, the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Huron and Wyandot. We have a proud and enduring history. Today, Mississauga is home to stunning natural beauty, diverse entertainment and culture, renowned restaurants and pubs, a variety of museums, theatres, world-class sporting facilities, and much more! As Ontario’s third largest city, we have something for everyone, including our residents! Whether you are visiting Mississauga for the first time, or are taking the opportunity to become a tourist in your own backyard, there is no shortage of things to see and do in Mississauga! My “Top 20 in 2020” pick is the iconic red and white Port Credit Lighthouse located along our scenic and vibrant waterfront. The lighthouse is an important piece of our city’s history, and is one of the most photographed landmarks in all of Mississauga. It offers gorgeous views of our beautiful waterfront and the village of Port Credit. It’s a must-see attraction! HISTORY LESSON Mississauga as we now know it is relatively new, but the history of the towns and places that make up the city can date their beginnings back to the early 1800s—and luckily many spaces have retained their historic character.

HISTORIC ERINDALE Erindale, located in the Credit River Valley of central Mississauga, can trace its history back to 1822, when the land was settled and was known as Toronto, Credit, Springfield and Springfield-on-the-Credit before taking the name of Erindale in 1900. Make sure to visit historical landmarks like St. Peter’s Anglican Church and heritage site The Grange, or for a more nature-inspired visit, walk along the banks of the Credit River on Culham Trail.
MEADOWVALE VILLAGE HERITAGE CONSERVATION DISTRICT In 1980, Meadowvale Village became the first Heritage Conservation district in Ontario and was, unsurprisingly, named for its meadows along the Credit River, although it was once also home to extensive pine forests when it was settled by emigrating New Yorkers in 1819. Meadowvale Village offers many historically preserved sites, and a walk down Old Derry Road is a great starting point.
HISTORIC STREETSVILLE Historic buildings and architecture buffs need look no further than Streetsville in north-west Mississauga, which saw its start as a milling town in the early 1820s, a tradition that continues to this day. Today, the town is home to the largest collection of historical buildings in Mississauga, so make sure to walk the “Village in the City” and spot the Montreal House and the Streetsville Business Improvement Area office.
OLD PORT CREDIT In 2005 Old Port Credit was named a Heritage Conservation Site, although its history dates back to the early 1700s, when the Indigenous Ojibwa established themselves at the mouth of the Credit River. By the 1830s, a harbour was constructed, and the area became a prosperous trading post until the creation of The Grand Trunk Railway in the 1850s. When visiting, you can still find plenty of historic character in the buildings and homes throughout Port Credit.

There are seven regional highways, including the 401, 403, 409, 410, 427 and the QEW, that can take you from Mississauga to Niagara Falls or Toronto, to name a few destinations. Highway 407 is an electronic toll highway that runs east-to-west in Ontario from Pickering to Burlington.
Licensed taxis, limos, and rideshare services (including Uber and Lyft) are available from the airport to your destination.
RULES OF THE ROAD Seatbelts are mandatory for adults, and safety restraints or booster seats are required for children. The speed limit is 50 kilometers per hour (about 30 miles per hour) on local Mississauga streets, and 100 kilometers per hour (about 60 miles per hour) on highways, unless otherwise posted.
