Environmental Art Works in the Snow With all the snow this winter, GAS115 are not getting discouraged, but instead created a number of beautiful environmental art works. Land Art, as it is referred to, focuses on working with the environment as it is, with no extra tools or man-made materials. The group chose Land Art created by General Arts and Science students to incorporate trees that there were in the snow. The students created a series of pathways to connect the trees and to draw attention to them. Prior to this day’s activities, the class looked at the environmental works of British artist Andrew Goldsworthy known internationally for his Land Works. Thank you for reminding us of the beauty that surrounds us. 2

Purple Power

Sault College Cougars Women’s Hockey Team turns purple

While in Brantford, the Sault College Cougar Women’s Hockey Team “turned purple” and distinguished themselves in the hearts of many people. Hockey Fights Cancer is a program which raises money, awareness, and support for those fighting cancer on an international level. The colour purple symbolizes a determined push back against cancer, and the Cougars did just that. Christina Romyn, who plays right wing on the team, pulled out a roll of purple tape from her hockey bag just prior to a key contest. She told her team mates about the significance of this hockey staple, and the important role her Aunt Dawn, who has cancer, plays in her life. Without hesitation, the purple tape started whizzing around the locker room with the players wrapping hockey sticks in positive energy. This kindness by the girls also led to a team photograph and quiet, positive introspection for Christina’s Aunt Dawn and all those who face the challenge of a cancer diagnosis. The Cougars hit the ice at the Wayne Gretzky Arena with determination and purple power in their hearts. Sault College commends this young, talented team on representing the spirit of our College. Thank you for your kindness and generous gesture.

Early Childhood Education Activities ECE Workshop

Early Childhood Education students host a bake sale

As part of their project on advocacy and leadership in early childhood education, Early Childhood Education (ECE) students organized and hosted a professional development workshop for Registered Early Childhood Educators in the SSM and Algoma district. Melanie Dixon, RECE, Director of Professional Development from the College of ECE, presented a workshop called “Embracing the Journey of Ongoing Learning” to nearly 60 members of the ECE community. The ECE students used this as an opportunity to raise funds by selling baked items to participants that would go towards their registration in the College of ECE.

Storytelling First year ECE students were treated to an evening of storytelling by several Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECE) from the community. The Sault Ste. Marie Public Library, in collaboration with ECE faculty member Andrea Welz, RECE, host this annual event for students as a learning opportunity to experience the joy of storytelling and to pick up effective strategies to develop their own personal storytelling technique. Sault College and Brazil’s Science without Borders Scholarship Program Seeking Local Employers for Internships

Science Without Borders Brazilian students with faculty and staff at Sault College

Did you know that Sault College is currently home to 27 Brazilian students who are studying pharmacy technician, engineering (civil, mechanical and electrical) and computer programming as part of Brazil’s Science without Borders Program? The program, launched in 2011, was developed by the Brazilian government in response to the country's fast economic growth which is outpacing Brazil’s ability to educate skilled workers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The Brazilian government chose Canada as an education destination of choice due to its excellent education system and leading industry sectors. This is Sault College’s second year participating in the program. It requires Brazilian students to complete two semesters of academic study at Sault College, followed by a 2-4 month internship (paid or unpaid) with a Canadian employer. Since students are given financial compensation by the Brazilian government through a scholarship, payment is solely at the discretion of the business providing the internship. We believe this is an exciting opportunity for Sault Ste. Marie businesses to engage Brazilian students and enrich Sault Ste. Marie’s global ties with an emerging economic powerhouse. The start and end dates of internships are flexible; however, they must take place for a minimum of two months between May and August of this year. If you are interested in offering an internship at your business or know of someone that would be interested, please contact Sasha Coleman at Sasha.Coleman@saultcollege.ca or phone 705759-2554 ext.2424.

Ray Lawson and the OPP Team Up for Drug Awareness

Students in residence team up for drug awareness

Residence students had the opportunity to attend a free Drug Awareness Workshop presented by Constable Monique Baker and Constable Barry Kelly of the Ontario Provincial Police. The presentation consisted of a brief overview of the legal consequences and health effects of drug use. There was also discussion about drug investigations and drug use on a local level. This was followed by a Canine Unit demonstration on how dogs are utilized in drug searches. Constable Baker and Constable Kelly encouraged an open dialogue with the students which gave them the chance to ask questions and have real conversations. Hello from Malawi MaryAnne Shannon, Nursing Professor at Sault College is currently teaching nursing students in Lilongwe Malawi. Below are some words from her about her experience. Assigned to teach Medical Surgical nursing for the University of Malawi (UNIMA)-Kamuzu College of Nursing has been an eye opening experience for me. I have 250 second-year MaryAnne Shannon with her some of her students nursing students in my lectures. My nursing clinicals are at a referral Central Hospital in Lilongwe (capital city in the country). Our clinical lab groups range in size from 20-40 students for each instructor. Students learn "best practice" procedures from a PowerPoint I provide (as textbooks are few and far between), and then practice their skills in a low fidelity skills lab with me before working next to me in wards of 18 or so patients at the Central Hospital...a place that is short of everything but patients! My hospital has some of the most creative nurses with whom I have ever worked and I am proud to be on their nursing team. All nursing students spend the last of their 4-year program here becoming a licensed nurse midwife. This is of critical importance because there are few OB/GYN doctors in a country which is known to have the highest neonatal death rate in Africa...and with Malawian women averaging 5.8 births each. In addition to working with the 250 generic Med Surg student nurses, I have 11 Masters in Nursing Education students (where I teach curriculum and instruction) and 7 PhD nursing students (where I teach research and aid in evaluating their research proposals). I am hoping to bring 10 interested Sault College Nursing students to Malawi in May 2016, and am excited to be able to return to Sault College next fall to add an African health care component to supplement the Multicultural Health Care Class I developed for Laurentian University's School of Nursing last year. As we continue with the rainy season here, we are plagued with hot weather (30 degrees C and higher), flooding, and malaria season.... making for packed hospital wards and even busier nurses. I look forward to seeing you all again next fall.

The Bon Soo Marquee Event Summary

The Public Relations and Event Management (PEM) students at Sault College diligently planned and executed the 2015 Bon Soo Marquee. Beginning in October with an event plan outlining the event logistics and promotions, the students worked on communications, research, and detail implementation until the completion of the event on Friday, February 6 th. The program partnered with Bon Soo Winter Carnival to run this event, with this year focused on providing a VIP experience to both the performers and nearly 3000 attendees. Before the event, the PEM students participated in the Rotary Santa Claus Parade and partnered with the Steelton Senior Centre to volunteer at the Christmas Gift Wrap Centre. These pre-event activities allowed students to promote the event and give back to the Sault Ste. Marie community. Bon Soo’s Opening Night festivities were located at the Tim Hortons Winter Playground at Mill Market and the Marquee received a fresh look and sound with the support of generous local sponsors. Sponsorship also helped to provide performers with swag bags and personalized platinum records to say thank you for their contribution. The evening highlighted the exciting artistic culture in Sault Ste. Marie, as well as astounding local talent. Continuous family-friendly music of various genres could be heard from 4:00 p.m., until 8:00 p.m., proving to be a great accompaniment to the spectacular OLG fireworks; a visual and audio experience like no other. The Marquee and PEM students received media coverage on Shaw TV Sault Ste. Marie Channel 10, as well as positive feedback from participants and the public alike. The PEM students have already implemented an event evaluation in order to continue with successful events in the future.

ERP Update The Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) project is well underway. This month, we are highlighting two of our staff who are involved with the project, Gina Drinkwater and Laurie Burrows. Gina has been working in Human Resources/Payroll for almost 25 years. Previously, she worked at an outpatient clinic and then at the College for almost 10 years. She is currently Manager Compensation; however she does wear her “HR hat” frequently and enjoys the combination. She is married with 3 children, ages 21, 18 and 15. Spending time with family and friends is always a priority for her. At her previous employer she had a very positive experience implementing a new HRIS/payroll system. The improvements were well worth the time and effort required to make the change happen. She believes that the ERP experience at the College will be just as rewarding. Her favourite movie: The Notebook A non-family member she most admires: Mother Teresa Her favourite quote: “He who finds a friend, finds a treasure.”

Laurie Burrows came to the College in July of 2005 after working in Public Accounting for 3 years and then the Private sector (industry) for another 3 years. She started as the Senior Financial Analyst and later became the Director of Financial Services. Her area is responsible for collections, accounts payment, student fee payments, Student Financial Assistance and the Colleges Financial Reporting and Audit. Her role in the ERP project is the Team Lead for the FIS portion. She look forward to the positive changes this system will make and being a leader by example. Her favourite movie: Dirty Dancing A non-family member whom you most admire: Ellen Degeneres Favourite Quote: “Coming together is the beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success.” - Bill Gates
