Study and Ski at Sault College It was a memorable start to the 20152016 Academic Year as Sault College President Dr. Ron Common surprised a gymnasium filled with new and returning students with news of ski passes. On December 1st, 2014 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Sault College and Searchmont Ski Association Inc. On that day, both Sault College and Searchmont Ski Association Inc. committed to making further enhancements to our ongoing partnership by working together to provide a unique and exhilarating experience to students studying at Sault College as well as to invigorate the resort operations and vitality of Searchmont. Sault College has provided programming expertise to Searchmont Resort in order to implement operational and developmental improvements to the Resort by providing valuable work, volunteering and placement experiences. In return, through this MOU, Sault College and Searchmont have worked to maximize the College life experience. This year, the College has negotiated a special program in which fulltime students will receive access to the hill as Sault becomes the first College in the province to provide a “ski and study” offer program to its students. An earlier survey of students demonstrated their interest in recreational activities such as downhill skiing. With Searchmont Resort, a premiere ranked regional training and recreation facility so close to the school, it was natural for the College to maximize its linkage to this geographical asset. Searchmont consists of high quality mountain terrain, amenities, events and entertainment, coupled with après-ski space for socializing and celebrating life in the North. We look forward to many more existing and innovative agreements between Sault College and community partners in the future. 1

Hair’s to You For years, Sault College’s Hairstyling program has touched the lives of those that have been affected by hair loss as a result of cancer treatment. As a commitment to our community, the Hairstyling Program provides a caring, supportive and respectful environment and service to men, women and children in our community who are living with cancer and subsequent hair loss.

Students and guests show their support at the Hair’s to You wig fundraising event

As a complimentary service to cancer patients, Sault College’s Hairstyling program provides consultation and fittings to select the perfect wig for patients to borrow/take home. In addition to a free wig, students and staff provide ongoing maintenance inclusive of wig cleaning, sanitization and personalized styling so patients can begin to feel like themselves again. Sault College’s wig supply is always in need of new or used wigs for people in treatment from the cancer clinic. In June of each year, students and faculty have been dedicated to raising awareness and much-needed funds for visiting patients. This year, members of Sault College Hairstylist-Hairdressing program kicked-off its Hair’s To You fundraising campaign with a sold-out Dinner and Wig Fashion Show at the Grand Gardens on June 16th. It was a sold-out event. Most of the patients visiting Sault College’s Hairstyling program Salon are referred by the cancer clinic. Tracy Dinelle, one of those referrals, will be speaking at Sault College’s fall convocation about her experience. As a certified non-profit organization operating at Sault College with tax-deductible receipts given for any donation over twenty dollars, Sault College’s Hairstyling program hopes to make the journey towards wellness that much easier for local cancer patients affected by hair loss. If you would like to help to restore the dignity and hope of so many cancer patients in Sault Ste. Marie all donations can be made to the Sault College Hairstyling Program Cancer Wig Clinic.

Additionally, Human Resources is benefiting by being closer to the hub of staff traffic and have already noticed an increase in visitors.
