A message from the Head of School

Dear Country Day Community,

In my eleventh year at Country Day, I begin a new chapter as it is the first time in my tenure as Head of School that I do not have any of my children on campus. With all three of my children now in college, my perspective has shifted from “current parent” to “past parent,” giving me an even greater appreciation of our school’s mission. As I watch each of my children successfully (though not without bumps in the road) navigate the challenges of college, I am grateful for how well-prepared they are for this next step in their journeys—both inside and outside the classroom.

We often say that success in college is about so much more than academic readiness. It is undoubtedly rooted in a solid academic foundation, but it is also about what we refer to as “soft skills,” including the ability to manage time, the ability to collaborate effectively with others, the ability to adapt to new situations, and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to respond constructively to challenges and setbacks. While preparing our students for college and life is the core of our school’s mission, we appreciate that fulfilling it requires a collaborative effort between the school, home, and community. Each of these components plays a vital role in our graduates’ success.

In addition to watching my children navigate life post-SCDS, this year has also given me opportunities to connect with many SCDS alumni—both here in Savannah and across the country. I am pleased to report that our alumni community is vibrant and engaged. The tireless efforts of our Office of Alumni Relations have allowed us to connect with alumni across various cities, including Chicago, Dallas, Austin, and Houston, from intimate gatherings in homes to lively happy hours in bustling city restaurants. In this issue of Images, we offer a glimpse into our interactions with over 100 alumni during our Hornets Take Flight events. Their stories and memories are a powerful testament to the lasting bonds formed within the Country Day community.

A thriving alumni community is a living testament to the exceptional work transpiring every day in our classrooms, on the athletic fields, and in the art studios. I hope you will join me in celebrating the enduring spirit of Country Day and inspire the generations that follow.

Quad Renovations Complete

With the completion of two major campus renovation projects this fall, Minis Hall and Livingston Hall, the academic phase of the Invest in Excellence campaign successfully concluded. Minis Hall, which now houses Upper School humanities classes, expanded to 12,000+ sq.ft. and includes 12 classrooms, a student commons area, and smaller study lounges. While the exterior of Livingston Hall, one of Country Day’s original buildings, preserved the well-known glass façade, the interior was renovated and reimagined into a dedicated building for Upper School and Middle School student support. Thanks to the generosity of our school community for making this happen!

Generative AI FACULTY WORKSHOP

The Upper School faculty invited Drs. Beth Howells and Annie Mendenhall from Georgia Southern University’s English Department to present a workshop entitled “Responding to AI in our Classrooms”. During the workshop, our guest presenters shared information about AI chatbots and writing services, explored a framework for AI in higher education, and encouraged faculty to consider their own thoughts, feelings, and concerns around the impact of AI on teaching, learning, and academic honesty. Faculty gathered by department to consider how they might adapt their teaching and assignments given the capabilities of AI, and how teachers might encourage students to use these tools ethically to support their learning.

National Merit Semifinalist

Congratulations to National Merit Scholarship Corporation Semifinalist, senior Emiline Baxter. Last fall, more than 1.5 million high school juniors took the PSAT. The top 16,000 scorers (roughly 1%) are recognized as National Merit Semifinalists by the NMSC. These Semifinalists will compete for NMSC Finalist awards to be announced in 2024.

SAVANNAH CAMELLIA PROJECT

Prior to the Thanksgiving break, the junior class participated in a community-wide beautification initiative alongside students from Chatham County schools and Master Gardeners from the Coastal Georgia Camellia Society.

Country Day is proud to be a part of The Savannah Camellia Project, which aims to plant over 2,000 Japanese camellias along a three-mile stretch of the Harry Truman Bike Path. Each plant with its accompanying name is

recorded in a database for historical reference.

Thanks to Billings and John Cay ’63* for their generous and unwavering commitment to providing the highest standards on and off the tennis courts. The newly constructed Cay Family Tennis Pavilion provides a campus home to our highly successful boys’ and girls’ varsity tennis programs, which both concluded the 2023 season as the GHSA State Runners-Up.

National Honor Society

In early November, Country Day welcomed 56 students into the National Honor Society. Founded in 1921, the National Honor Society recognizes students who excel in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. To be eligible, students in grades 11 & 12 must demonstrate outstanding performance in the four selection criteria. Peter Foley Honored

Last fall, a group of alumni and parents of alumni united with a common wish to honor retired teacher and coach Peter Foley with an athletic field named in his honor. During halftime of the homecoming game on September 22, Hornets gathered to pay tribute to Peter Foley and to announce that the practice field closest to Saunders Field has been named Foley Field.

Peter Foley’s impact shines among 36 years of players, students, and parents who appreciate his teaching and coaching legacy, many of whom joined him on the field, including members from the 2002 and 2004 State Championship soccer teams!

Oktoberfest Celebration

On the evening of October 14, over 350 members of the Country Day community gathered in the Quad for Oktoberfest, a celebration of the Invest in Excellence Campaign and our new and renovated Upper School academic buildings! Guests enjoyed live music, college football on big screens, and fantastic food and drink. Thank you to alumni musicians Stewart Marshall ’86 and Jim Marshall ’98 and sponsors SAGE Dining Services, Savannah Distributing Company, Inc., PitchPerfect, and Savannah Bar Carts.

Big Surprise for Longtime Coach Lamar Kirkley

In the midst of the 2023 alumni homecoming festivities, Head of School Kef Wilson requested everyone’s attention for a surprise announcement. After expressing sincere gratitude for Coach Lamar Kirkley’s 48-year teaching and coaching legacy, Mr. Wilson and alumnus Carl Showalter ’78 surprised Coach Kirkley and the audience by announcing the establishment of The Lamar Kirkley Teaching Fellowship Endowment Fund. This endowed fund was made possible by the generosity of the alumni community, notably Carl Showalter ’78 and Alan Reynolds ’77, as well as a grant from the EE Ford Foundation.

The Lamar Kirkley Teaching Fellowship Endowment Fund allows recent college graduates to launch their careers in education by gaining one to two years of valuable experience at Savannah Country Day School. This program will develop and nurture future leaders in independent schools. Math Team Success

The Middle School Math Team participated in the Math League competition at Fulton Science Academy in Alpharetta on Saturday, December 9. After tackling three rounds of challenging problems, Olivia Jeong won a silver medal for students in sixth grade, Grant Umbel won a silver medal for students in seventh grade, Keating Taylor won a silver medal for students in eighth grade, and Kohki Maeda won third place overall for eighth graders! Other students contributing to a second place recognition for the team round were Oskar Johnson-Liu, Dylan Gensheimer, Evan Hay, Anthony Kim, Olivia Kang, and Julia Song. Great work, Mathletes!

Student Diversity and Leadership Conference

In late November, a group of SCDS students joined over 2,000 other high school students from across the nation for the 2023 Student Diversity Leadership Conference, a flagship conference of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). This year’s conference took place in St. Louis, MO, with the theme, “Bending the Arc Toward Justice: Radical Optimism, Transformational Joy, Resilience, and Brilliance.” Country Day student attendees included Miles King, Rachi Wilson, Ayo Ajayi, Jade Flood, Ramon Barboa, and Liv Posey. Junior Jade Flood commented, “My favorite part of the SDLC trip was exploring friendship. I had so much fun meeting new people and forming stronger relationships with my peers who accompanied me!” Freshman Miles King added, “SDLC helped me realize that I need to speak up instead of letting people turn down my voice in the world.” Karen Brown, Director of Cultural Competency and Inclusion, enthuses, “I am always so excited to accompany students and faculty to the conference. It re-energizes me every year, and it embodies what we strive for in our independent schools—inclusion and belonging. It was a wonderful and life-changing experience for our SCDS students who attended.”

One-Act Play Wins State Championship

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO THE UPPER SCHOOL CAST AND CREW OF PETER AND THE STARCATCHER ON WINNING THE GHSA ONE-ACT PLAY STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!

THE 3A COMPETITION WAS HELD ON NOVEMBER 18 AT BUFORD HIGH SCHOOL, WITH EIGHT REGION CHAMPS COMPETING FOR THE STATE TITLE. IN ADDITION TO COUNTRY DAY’S CHAMPIONSHIP WIN, INDIVIDUAL AWARDS INCLUDED BEST ACTRESS MOLLIE MACFADYEN AND ALL-STAR CAST DANIEL BOSCH AND BEN TEMPLETON.

“The dedication, focus, and determination of the entire cast and crew made this possible,” commented James Venhaus, Upper School Theatre Arts Teacher and Director of Fine and Performing Arts. “You never know what the judges will do, so we kept our focus on serving the script and telling the audience a story that was entertaining and, at times, deeply moving.

This is the first One-Act Play State Championship in school history, and I couldn’t be prouder of these students and of our school for supporting us every step of the way.”

In addition, accolades at the region competition included Best Actress Mollie Macfadyen, Best Actor Daniel Bosch, Best Director James Venhaus, and All-Star Cast Ben Templeton and Silas Johnson.

In the Spotlight

This fall, the Upper and Middle School theatre departments explored two different stories based on J. M. Barrie’s immortal character, Peter Pan. The Upper School show, “Peter and the Starcatcher,” is a prequel to “Peter Pan” that explores how all of the classic characters came to be. The Middle School production of “Peter Pan and Wendy” is a faithful adaptation of Barrie’s 1911 novel of the same name and gave students a chance to breathe life into classic characters like Peter Pan, Wendy, Captain Hook, Smee, The Lost Boys, and pirates. Upper School Theatre Director James Venhaus and Middle School Theatre Director Laura Wild ’03 relished the opportunity for their respective programs to explore the magic of childhood through different twists on the same story.

Fine Arts Nights, Concerts and Exhibitions

At Savannah Country Day, the Fine Arts program exposes students to visual art, general music, choral music, jazz band, theatre, ceramics, photography, orchestra, and technology-based visual arts. Each year, our talented students have an opportunity to showcase their work at the Middle School and Upper School Fine Arts Nights, including an exhibition of the visual arts and performances from our orchestra, chorus, jazz bands, and drama students. Each event celebrates our talented student artists and Country Day’s award-winning arts program.

COUNTRY DAY WAS THRILLED TO HOST WORLD-CLASS TRUMPET PLAYER, ARRANGER, AND COMPOSER MARK RAPP ON CAMPUS FOR TWO DAYS OF JAZZ WORKSHOPS WITH OUR MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS. MR. RAPP IS THE FOUNDER OF COLAJAZZ IN COLUMBIA, S.C., A NON-PROFIT THAT ORGANIZES JAZZ FESTIVALS AND EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH. THANK YOU TO THE ARTS ALLIANCE FOR FUNDING THE VISITING ARTIST PROGRAM!

FOOTBALL

The Hornets had another strong season in class AAA under third-year Head Coach John Mohring. After losing only two seniors in 2022, the Hornets brought back almost everyone in 2023 and enjoyed that advantage. The Hornets finished 7-4 and third in the Region, earning a spot in the GHSA playoffs. They played a tough schedule and were able to beat Long and Liberty High Schools in region play, something they weren’t able to do in 2022. Coach Mohring reinstated the JV program this year, and the team finished 4-2 in those games. The team loses some key seniors to graduation, but returning as the Region 3AAA Offensive Player of the Year is Barton Mixon as quarterback.

CLAY TARGET

It was another fantastic year for the clay target team, outperforming over 50 teams to finish as the 2023 GIAA State Runner-Up. The team’s top five shooters comprised the team score and included Chase Buerger (279/300), Miles Carson (276/300), Ericka Ann McKeever (275/300), Andrew Nicholson (270/300), and Dan Bradley (270/300). Impressively, senior Ericka Ann McKeever took home her second Individual Female HOA (highest overall) title, dominating the event with a fantastic finish to her high school career. Several teammates placed in the State Top 10 as follows: Skeet: Ericka Ann McKeever placed 2nd, Grant Hunter 6th, Gracen Garceau 3rd, Anna Loren Dekle 4th, and Jacqueline Bunger 9th. Trap: Chase Buerger placed 2nd, Ericka Ann McKeever 1st, Gracen Garceau 7th, Anna Loren Dekle 4th, and Jacqueline Bunger 9th. Sporting clays:

FLAG FOOTBALL

The flag football team continued to set records this season. The Hornets finished 8-1 in region play with impressive wins against St. Vincent’s Academy and South Effingham High School, which earned them second seed for the playoffs in GHSA Division 1 (A-4A). Country Day lost in the first round of the playoffs to Dodge County High School (former state champions), but their coaches and fans were proud of their best season to date (10-2).

The Hornets were led by seven senior captains Hayden Anderson, Eva Beauchamp, Harper Judelson, Ella Lowry, Sofia Pablo, Anna Shelton, and Rachi Wilson. Sofia Pablo continued to impress with her strong quarterback play, posting 1641 passing yards, 228 rushing yards, and 30 total touchdowns. Harper Judelson led the team with 46 receptions and 409 yards. Eva Beauchamp was a well-rounded offensive running back, rushing for 195 yards and receiving 323 yards. Anna Shelton was a standout rusher on defense, piling up over 25 sacks, and Reese Bailey led the team in flag pulls with 45 on the season.

VOLLEYBALL

During their 2023 volleyball season, the Hornets made significant progress and earned a spot in the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs. The SCDS volleyball team is optimistic about its future due to the strong group of junior and sophomore players. They remain committed to competing at a higher level and challenging themselves against tough opponents in Savannah and surrounding areas.

Additionally, the team received several accolades in Region 3AAA. Harris Stone was honored with 1st Team recognition, while Olivia Aliotta, Mary Duvall Sumner, and Lilla Brennan were selected for the 2nd Team. The Savannah Morning News Coastal Empire Best of Preps included Harris Stone 2nd Team and Honorable Mentions were Olivia Aliotta, Lilla Brennan, and Mary Duvall Sumner. Notably, freshman Olivia Aliotta had an impressive 198 kills, and Mary Duvall Sumner boasted 139. Mary Elizabeth Semones demonstrated outstanding defensive skills with 42 blocks, and Harris Stone contributed with 268 digs.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Varsity cross country team celebrated a successful season marked by dedication, teamwork, and resilience. Through focused and energetic practices, the runners were able to turn their hard work into a series of remarkable performances. This was seen most notably through the efforts of Charlie Pope, who placed fifth in the region and 68th in the GHSA Class AAA State Championship meet with a final time of 19:06. Freshman Aarya Patel proved herself to be a formidable runner in every girls’ race, placing eighth in the region with a personal best time of 24:01. Through the senior leadership of captains Bryn Sorge, Devin Beauchamp, and Jessica Elkin, the team was able to fight through challenging runs with unity and sportsmanship. Region 3AAA honors included 1st Team Charlie Pope; 2nd Team Devin Beauchamp and Aarya Patel. The Savannah Morning News

Reconnecting with alumni across the country

With almost 4,000 alumni across the country and abroad, the Savannah Country Day alumni network is robust, engaged, and loyal. The Office of Alumni Relations has recently expanded the alumni networking opportunities with Hornets Take Flight—an initiative to reunite with alumni across the country. After traveling to nine cities and reconnecting with nearly 100 Hornets, we asked some of these alumni to let us know what they’re doing now and how their time at County Day impacted them.

Just before I graduated from UGA, I got a call from two close SCDS classmates, James Wheeler ‘99 and Zvee Geffen ‘99, saying they found a three-bedroom apartment in midtown NYC. I didn’t have a job, so I was hesitant, but they assured me that I would have a job in a week. Twenty years later, I am grateful for their encouragement, which led me to a city I love, a career, my wife, and two beautiful daughters!

I think most Country Day alumni look back after the first year of college and realize how incredibly well-prepared we were academically. However, there’s also an emphasis on values and character. Early and consistently, we learned about trust, integrity, and doing the right thing. This gave me a great foundation for navigating situations throughout my career and in life. Country Day gives students a platform to study, compete, and perform at the highest levels.

In high school, I interviewed Mr. Adam Weber for the school newspaper, and when he told me he went to college in Massachusetts, I remember thinking, “Why would anyone go to school somewhere so cold?” And now I’ve been in Chicago longer than I was at Country Day! Benjamin Levy ‘97, is on faculty at the University of Chicago, and we stay in touch. He’s the one who told me about the alumni event in Chicago. Mylin Torres ‘94 and Amy (Herman) Comander ‘93 also treat breast cancer so we attend a lot of the same meetings; we always make a point to have a meal together and catch up. My colleagues at work are amazed at how many people I know from high school that I see in academic situations.

I look back now and I feel like my education was really top-notch. The teachers were committed to teaching us how to be good writers and communicators, to think deeply and question things. And Dr. Byron Boyd and his pop quizzes! Those taught me to pay attention to the details.

My daughter attended Coastal Ecology Camp a few summers ago, which was a great experience for both of us. I love that she got to explore in the mud and the marsh. I also got to see Mr. Bill Eswine’s new classroom, which is amazing and so uniquely him.

The Air Force Academy offered me a chance to play football at a very high level as well as get a great education. I was a senior when the 9/11 attacks happened and was attracted to the opportunity to serve our country in a time of great need. I think to that point in my life, SCDS was one of the most influential pieces of my life and gave me, among other things, the ability to see the benefits of an experience that was very challenging and the skills to actually endure the experience.

My wife, Kendall (Gardner) ’05, and I have always felt like the relationships we formed during our time at SCDS with fellow students and faculty were very meaningful and have had a huge impact on who and where we are today. Being surrounded by bright and ambitious peers pushed us in a very positive way. One very valuable takeaway was learning how to grind through life when it gets difficult and to effectively balance life, academics, and athletics. That served me well in college and has continued to do so throughout my professional life.

My English classes were definitely my favorite classes. I served as editor of the literary magazine Amanuensis in 11th and 12th grade, as well as worked on the yearbook committee. There were many teachers I enjoyed, but Mrs. Beulah Harper really stood out. She wanted all of us to be part of the 700 Club, meaning break 700 on the verbal portion of the SAT. I give her a lot of credit for my SAT score and the fact that I got into UVA and have made my living as a writer ever since. I even won Wheel of Fortune a couple of years ago!

I try to keep up with as many friends from Country Day as possible. My class only had 59 students, and I would guess that half of them, including me, started when we were five or six, so it’s a very tight-knit group. It’s very easy to pick up where we left off. We grew up together, which was amazing, but it was also one of the reasons I wanted to go to college out of state. That’s a long time to be part of a small group, and I was ready for a larger environment and new people and experiences.

Although I was not a Country Day lifer, I did have four impactful high school years after my family moved to Savannah from Philadelphia. The connections and relationships I made with faculty and students are extraordinary. I get together once a year with several of my high school friends. I feel fortunate to have a foundation of great friendships and a strong education, which has given me the confidence to take on both personal and professional challenges.

At Country Day, I developed a love for both arts and science, which has led to careers in advertising, as a drug rep with a specialty in psychiatry and neurology, and currently as an art consultant. I learned strong communication and writing skills (thanks to faculty like Harper and Braithwaite), an appreciation for theatre and the arts, and more about math and science than I realized until I started training with Pfizer. SCDS prepared me well for the various professional choices I have had the privilege of having.

It was so fun to attend Hornets Take Flight in Austin, catch up with familiar faces, and hear what jobs and experiences alumni were having in Austin. I love that SCDS has such an active and engaged alumni network that allows me to make connections across differing years. For me, being an SCDS alum means embodying confidence, imagination, and integrity while being curious and striving to collaborate well with others.

I’m grateful to my teachers at SCDS, who helped foster in me a love for English and writing. Their passion was so evident in the classroom and inspired me to pursue an American Studies degree (interdisciplinary major in English, history, and political science) in college. Thanks to this foundation, I was well prepared to handle my college academics. Developing perseverance when encountering challenges has helped me beyond the classroom and is a valuable asset when navigating TikTok’s dynamic and fast-paced environment. I credit SCDS for helping me build my academic endurance, which was vital to my academic experience in college.

The focus on critical thinking and problem-solving, not just coursework, at SCDS is incredibly applicable and valuable. Even when I felt in over my head at Princeton, I had tools I could use to figure out a way forward. I remember curiosity being met with acceptance and dialogue; learning under the guidance of beloved teachers allowed for a lot of growth and creativity. I don’t know how many blind contour drawings I did for Kay Godowa, but I am grateful for every one of them!

At Bath & Body Works, I am a team leader and graphic designer who works on web and digital products, advocating for design across those experiences. That includes how things look, but, more importantly, how things work. I’ve got a traditional graphic design background, but have learned and grown in my career alongside technology. In addition to my work at Bath & Body Works, I’ve collaborated with alums on some fun design projects. I was lucky enough to have Chris Bilheimer ’88 bring me in to work on websites for Widespread Panic and R.E.M., and he referred me to Mary (Armstrong) Dugas ’88 to help support Gregg Allman’s legacy site. I also worked on an invitation for a parks fundraiser in NYC with Kathryn (Tatum) Saunders ‘92. I am fortunate to be in touch with many of my classmates, my brothers’ classmates, and even some of my mother’s and her siblings’ classmates.

Country Day teachers were very involved in my development as a student and my ability to handle the classroom challenges of the competitive colleges I attended. Understanding and practicing the discipline of constant learning, embracing challenges, and owning responsibility are valuable lessons I’ve carried throughout my life. Many of my peers say that had they known the anguish and energy required to start their own business, they would not do it again. I feel differently; I had the skills I needed to constantly evolve, appreciate, and grow my business.

I attended the alumni event because I thought it would be fun to see who I might know from Country Day who lives in Houston, TX. I was amazed to learn that Kef Wilson was not only raised in Houston but lived a few blocks from my house in West University. Another amazing coincidence is that my son took geometry in Houston with Katherine Wade, who taught it to me at Country Day. Ms. Wade had a tremendous impact on all the students she taught. Tough, fair, and incredibly understanding, she exemplified the positive reinforcement that high school students need. When she retired after over 40 years of teaching due to health reasons, our family created the “Katherine Wade Geometry Math Scholarship,” which is awarded annually to a deserving student from our children’s high school. It’s very rare that a great teacher has been such a positive influence on a parent and their child.

Most of us who grew up in Savannah and attended SCDS have a bond that draws us back. As TS Eliot wrote, “Home is where one starts from.” SCDS was one of the most important experiences in my teens that prepared me for life after high school. Advice often given to high school students in commencement addresses and by mentors is to find your passions quickly and pursue your dreams, but no great passion ever hit me in high school or college. My experience at SCDS and afterward was constant uncertainty about the future and my role in it.

But SCDS was also where I first learned to embrace that uncertainty. It led me to a life of experimentation and asking myself why I was doing something, whether I should be pursuing a different path, what was and wasn’t interesting, and motivating myself to take on a new project or venture. SCDS provided an academic community where I could explore new ideas and think about ways to solve hard problems. Getting comfortable with the process of prototyping and finding solutions has been an integral part of my success.

SCDS was one of the most important experiences in my teens that prepared me for life after high school.

Carol is a Savannah native and attended SCDS from grades pre-k through 12th grade. She graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BS in Biology, Loma Linda University, with a Ph.D. in Physiology, and South University with an MS in Anesthesia. For over 50 years, she has worked in science research, education, and health care. She resides in Savannah, spending leisure time playing golf and hiking.

Mitch Wilkes writes, “There was a great deal to be thankful for this past year. My wife Carole and I were able to travel again to Oxford, Wales, and Ireland. This was Carole’s 26th summer in Oxford with the Georgia Tech Study Abroad program and perhaps the best yet. I also visited old rugby pals in Wales and made it to Dublin for the Notre Dame/Navy football season opener.

We are enjoying the San Diego sunshine and now have our daughter Meredith and son-in-law Greg living nearby in Ocean Beach. They are expecting a baby boy (our first grandchild!) in May. Life is good and best to all!!”

The Board of Alumni welcomes new board member, George Oelschig. George was formerly the Senior Vice President of Corporate Banking at Bank of America in Atlanta for 18 years and the Chairman/CEO of Safemark Systems in Orlando, FL for 22 years before retiring in 2018. In 2019, George founded and is the Chair of Elevate Savannah, an educational, non-profit organization designed to meet the complex needs of underserved youth by providing character classes and life skills training through the Chatham County Public School System to empower youth to become successful, responsible adults. Elevate Savannah’s mission is to build long-term life-changing relationships with urban youth, equipping them to thrive and contribute to their community. George enjoys golf, clays, boats, and educational initiatives.

On the weekend of September 22-23, 2023, the Class of 1983 held its 40th Reunion. On Friday, classmates met at the Alumni Party before the Homecoming game, which saw our Hornets defeat the Blue Tide of Long County in a thrilling game. On Saturday, the Class of ’83 gathered at the home of Melissa and Kelly Bouchillon, where a good time was had by all! It was great catching up with the Kirkleys and the Eswines, who joined the party, along with all the classmates who attended. Mylin Torres, MD is the recipient of the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Torres is the Professor and Chief Division of Health Services, Outcomes, and Policy in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Emory University. The Board of Alumni welcomes new board member R. Allen Williams. A native of Savannah, Allen earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the College of Charleston. He now serves as Senior Vice President / Member Partner at Bernard

Williams & Company. In addition to his role at Bernard Williams & Company, he serves as a Partner / Financial Advisor at Chatham Financial Advisors, a company he co-founded in 2016. He has served on a number of non-profit and corporate boards over the years. Currently, he serves on the board of directors for both the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce. Allen resides in Savannah with his wife Ellen (Harper) Williams ’00, and their two children Charlotte ‘30 and Lanier.

1997 & 1998

The Classes of 1997 and 1998 combined to celebrate their 25th reunions on Saturday, September 23 at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront. It was a fantastic evening of reconnection, live music, and lively conversation. Awards were given for those most traveled, living farthest away, oldest children, youngest children, and longest married. Classmates enjoyed updating each other on life events since their last gathering. For some, that has been since graduation from Country Day, so there was much to share! Attendees learned of new business ventures, met spouses, heard stories of children growing up, talked of how parents were doing, and what others are planning to do next. The Classes of 1997 and 1998 cherished their time together as only those who knew you when you were young can do!

Julia (Glen) Duckworth has been living in London, UK for 13 years and has been heading up Innovation R&D Europe at Diageo for over fourand-a-half years. In October, Julia attended the esteemed Worshipful Company of Distillers Mansion House event and was elected into the Gin Guild for her innovations and for promoting excellence in gin distillation globally.

In addition, Julia recently started an Innovation Fellowship at the Royal College of Art as part of the Grow London scheme, which brings together senior corporate innovation leaders who are committed to driving effective, inclusive, and sustainable innovation practices.

Julia loves to travel and is fortunate that her work takes her to some very cool and exotic destinations across the globe. In September, she visited Isle of Islay and Isle of Jura in Scotland for a bit of work and pleasure and visited a number of scotch whisky distilleries. Julia writes, “Islay and Jura are stunningly beautiful and whiskies are nice too! However, the travel highlight of the year for me was visiting Namibia! So much wildlife and incredible landscapes!”

Liz (Levy) Karen writes, “I have started a job as Director, Medical Affairs at Perimeter Medical Imaging AI, a medtech company driven to transform cancer surgery with ultra-high resolution, real-time, advanced imaging tools that address unmet medical needs. I will be primarily focused on tactical plans to support the development and implementation of a medical affairs and medical education program.”

The Class of 2003 reports, “We had a wonderful 20year reunion. We enjoyed the opening Alumni Homecoming Cocktail Party and football game. For those of us not lucky enough to live in Savannah and send our kids to Country Day, many of us enjoyed touring around campus. It was great to catch up with old

friends and see the growth of the school. On Saturday, many from our class met at Starland Yard for lunch with kids. In the afternoon, Kate and Niko Caparisos hosted us for drinks and appetizers at their home in Ardsley Park before our main event at Savoy Society. We all enjoyed catching up and meeting spouses. We weren’t ready for the night to end so finished up with a few more rounds at the Perry Lane hotel rooftop. We are already counting down to the 25-year!”

The Board of Alumni welcomes new board member, John Gilbert, Jr. John grew up in Savannah and attended Country Day before studying history and

philosophy at Tulane University. After graduating with honors, he stayed in New Orleans and launched his career in commercial real estate. John and his wife Bailee moved back to Savannah in 2013, and he joined Gilbert & Ezelle Commercial Real Estate, LLC, a locally owned and operated firm affiliated with international firm Cushman & Wakefield. John and Bailee have two children, Margaret ‘37 and Thomas (The Little School). He is involved in numerous local non-profit and professional organizations. When not working or spending time with his family, John enjoys playing golf and fly-fishing.

Sean Dane-Kellogg, co-founder of Detritus LLC, was recently named to the Bulldog 100, a list celebrating the top 100 fastest-growing organizations owned or led by University of Georgia alumni.

The class of 2008 celebrated its 15th reunion during Thanksgiving week. Many, many thanks to Owen and Ashley (Moore) Brennan for hosting the event at their beautiful home. The gathering was well attended, and it was a fabulous opportunity to catch up over good food and oysters.

Kathleen (Herring) Grant is completing her internal medicine chief residency at Wake Forest and plans to pursue a career in general internal medicine with a focus on medical education, rural populations, and advances in technology in healthcare. Mary Talbot Skinner graduated from University of Alabama Birmingham with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and received board certifications as an adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner and clinical nurse educator. Mary Talbot joined the faculty at Samford University as an assistant professor in the School of Nursing.

Texas Christian University students Ansley Keaton and Claudia Birthisel ’23 reconnect with fellow Hornets at the Country Day regional alumni event in Dallas on November 6, 2023.

Kenny Odom was named the United Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week on November 6. A redshirt freshman at Austin Peay, Kenny had three receptions, 49 yards on the final drive of regulation, a 39-yard touchdown reception, and one tackle for no gain on 83-yard punt. Kenny is transferring to the University of Texas El Paso to follow former Austin Peay head coach, Scotty Walden, who was recently appointed Head Football Coach at the University of Texas El Paso.

Owen Haas loves Florida State University and enjoys competing on the FSU Skeet and Trap team. He’s off to a great start as a collegiate athlete, having won HOA (highest overall) at his first two collegiate tournaments.

Sarah (Bowman) ’13 married David Riddle on Labor Day weekend in Nashville. They met and graduated from Vanderbilt and both went to graduate school at University of Georgia. The couple lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Sarah is in her pediatric residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Emily (Knopf) ’11 and Graham King were married October 21, 2023. The wedding took place at the Knopf family home on Bluff Drive, followed by an outdoor tented reception on the Riverfront Lawn of The Thompson Hotel. Her maid of honor was Katie Black ’11, and Will Dillard ’06 officiated the ceremony. Emily and Graham met and previously lived in Atlanta but are excited to announce their return to Savannah.

Following the Livingston Hall Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony on January 5, Golden Hornets reunited in Triol Hall for the 2nd Annual Golden Hornets Breakfast. Thank you Sharon Eswine and Lamar Kirkley for stopping by to visit with longtime friends and former colleagues.

On October 8, GeeGee and Lamar Kirkley surprised Ms. Anne Sellers, former Lower School teacher, with a visit to her Clemson Downs home in Clemson, S.C.

Emily and Peter Foley reconnect with their friend and former student and colleague, Leigh (Small) Beauchamp ’88, at the Homecoming Alumni Cocktail Party on September 22.

Ms. Sellers is beloved among former students and families for many reasons, but her handmade, personalized birthday cards remain a favorite memory for most. She recently celebrated her 93rd birthday, and— wanting to make her feel as special as she made so many of her students over the years—Lamar was thrilled to share with her some of the birthday messages sent to her on Facebook.
