Dear Country Day Community:

During my tenure at Country Day, I have often heard Headmaster Emeritus Paul Pressly state that “nice buildings and facilities can make a school great, but the heart and soul of Country Day are the PEOPLE — the faculty, staff, and students.” While a hallmark of Country Day is the caliber and dedication of our faculty and staff, it is also the case that teaching and learning can be enhanced by the spaces in which it takes place. The addition of Pape and Pressly Halls has greatly enriched the educational experience for our Middle and Lower School students since their construction in the early 2000s, and the many wonderful outdoor spaces on our campus make daily life more enjoyable for everyone.

Mingledorff Hall, the latest addition to our campus, has had nothing short of a transformative effect on the daily lives of our Upper School students and teachers. After 18 months of construction, this 32,000 sq. ft. light-filled building is complete with expansive labs and classrooms, areas for student collaboration, and many signature features such as the gathering stair, makerspace, energy lab, and library resource center. Every inch of the building is utilized throughout the day—from students recording podcasts in a conference room to a teacher working through math problems on a large hallway whiteboard. This new Upper School space has quickly become a hub of creative and innovative teaching and learning. If you have not yet had the opportunity to tour this incredible new space, I encourage you to do so!

Mingledorff Hall would not be possible without our school community’s steadfast financial support. On behalf of all the faculty, staff, and students of Country Day, please accept our heartfelt gratitude for your generosity. This issue of Images contains the 2021-22 Annual Report and recognizes all who made gifts to support our programs and further our mission. This issue also shines a spotlight on Tyler Beauchamp ‘15, a remarkable young alumnus who recently visited campus and spent the day meeting with students. I remember Tyler as active in a multitude of clubs and extracurriculars, and his career trajectory reflects what we wish for our students—the discovery and exploration of one’s passions. Tyler’s remarks to the student body, and much of the enclosed Q&A, describe how he has successfully married a love of storytelling and writing with science and medicine. And above all, his work in both fields reflects his commitment to using his knowledge and talents to serve others. He is a shining example of our school’s mission fully realized and what we want for all of our graduates.

Sincerely,

MISSION STATEMENT

The Savannah Country Day School seeks to prepare students of academic and personal promise to meet with confidence, imagination, and integrity the challenges of college and of life. In partnership with supportive families, we strive to cultivate in each student the desire and the discipline to grow in wisdom, to lead lives of personal honor, to appreciate beauty, to pursue physical well-being, and to serve others with a generous, compassionate spirit.

Mingledorff Hall Ribbon-Cutting

Despite the onset of rain and lightning, guests gathered in late August to celebrate the official unveiling of Mingledorff Hall, the School’s new Upper School building centered in the Quad. Following remarks, Bud and Shirley Mingledorff, surrounded by family, cut the ribbon and guests were invited to tour the state-of-theart facility. The new building houses five math classrooms, five science labs, an energy learning lab, and a makerspace. Other building features include an expansive library, conference rooms, common areas for students, Deans’ offices, and a second-story outdoor gathering space. Additional information and photos can be found on pages 24-27.

Guest Speaker Jonathan Mooney

The SCDS Learning Support Department was pleased to welcome guest speaker Jonathan Mooney to campus in late September. Mr. Mooney is a widely sought-after speaker, writer, and advocate who carried diagnoses of ADHD and dyslexia to an honors degree in English from Brown University and the publication of three very successful books, “The Short Bus,” “Learning Outside the Lines,” and “Normal Sucks.” Jonathan’s work has been featured in The New York Times, HBO, NPR, Fast Company, and ABC News. For two decades he has offered the message that we should reexamine our definition of “normal” and empower our children to succeed. Mr. Mooney hosted four sessions throughout the day: two with Middle and Upper School students, one with faculty, and a final session with parents and the larger Savannah community. This event was made possible thanks to the generosity of the Sywassink and Fana families.

SCDS Celebrates Six National Merit Semifinalists

Country Day is thrilled to have six seniors selected as semifinalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Competition. Congratulations to Aden Adjei, Ned Henneman, Avi Heyman, Sarah Jane Schulze, Eoin Wilson, and Fiona Wilson. In addition, seniors Gracie Daters and Jordan Ruben were commended by the National Merit Scholarship program.

The six semifinalists are among 16,000 nationwide, which represents less than one percent of all U.S. high school seniors. The students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered in the spring of 2023. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Media Literacy

As part of a larger effort to teach students about media literacy, Middle School and Upper School welcomed the following guests to participate in a media literacy panel: Susan Catron, managing editor of The Current and former executive editor of the Savannah Morning News; Shirley James, publisher of the Savannah Tribune, one of the nation’s oldest African American-owned newspapers; Ben Katko, co-anchor on WSAV’s Coastal Sunrise; Zoe Nicholson, growth and communities reporter for the Savannah Morning News; and Jake Wallace, digital anchor/producer for WTOC Savannah. The panelists discussed the importance of being equipped with media literacy skills, such as searching for credible sources, critically assessing content, and examining competing opinions and ideas.

Campus Sculpture Honors Faculty

Thanks to the generosity of the Barrow family, there is a new watchful eye in the Lower School garden. As a gift to the school in honor of Bill and Sharon Eswine, former SCDS parents Craig and Diana Barrow, along with their son Thornton, class of 1990, gifted a striking sculpture of an owl by renowned artist Roger Martin. Within minutes of the installation, the piece of art titled “Moonshadow” caught the attention of a nearby kindergarten class. As a special touch, the stone pedestal that supports the sculpture was sourced from the Barrow’s home at Wormsloe State Historic Site. We are thankful to the Barrow family for their generous gift that is sure to guard our gardens for many years to come.

Students Practice Civic Engagement on Election Day

After undergoing formal training, 21 Upper School students served as official poll workers on Election Day this fall. The students helped ensure the orderly operations of the election process while learning the importance of civic engagement. Way to go, Hornets!

Students and Faculty Attend Diversity Conference

In early December, five Upper School students—Britney Brown, Phil-Isabelle Ajayi, Lily Tran, Leyla Patel, Maya King, and Rooster Bing—and four faculty members—Karen Brown, AJ Goldman, Corey Heyward, and Clare Ward—participated in the annual Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC), and the adult counterpart, People of Color Conference (PoCC), both flagship conferences annually sponsored by the National Association of Independent Schools. Attending the conferences allows the almost 8,000 participants from various independent schools across the nation to share in NAIS’s commitment to equity and justice in teaching, learning, and organizational development.

During the five-day conference, Hornets attended a series of thought-provoking workshops, inspiring speaker sessions, and affinity group spaces, all centered around the theme of “We The People: Leveraging Our Community to Preserve Our Humanity.” The conferences serve as a way for Country Day students and adults to engage in an unforgettable and impactful inclusion experience, bring back to Country Day invaluable leadership skills and insights, and help lead the call to character and courage in the national movement of our time.

In the Spotlight

The Middle and Upper School Theatre Departments lit up the stage with productions of “The Diviners” and “Newsies, Jr.” Both productions were highly praised for the students’ immense talent and creative interpretation of the pieces, as well as the collaboration with Upper School students who made up the crew and pit orchestra for the Middle School musical. Bravo, Hornets!

SCDS Jazz Rocks

In mid-December, the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo took the stage for a lively concert filled with a variety of pieces, ranging from Michael Buble to Freddie Mercury.

One Act Play Winner

Congratulations to the amazing cast and crew of “The Diviners” for their first place win at the GHSA Regional One Act Play Competition! Kudos as well to Alex Kaminsky ‘22 and Daniel Bosch ‘25 for their All-Star Cast awards and to Silas Johnson ‘24 for being chosen as Best Actor of the entire competition! At the GHSA State Competition, Country Day took fourth place, and Silas Johnson and Alex Kaminsky won All-Star Actor and Actress for their performances.

A favorite school tradition each December, the annual Holiday Concert is a beautiful showcase of our Lower, Middle, and Upper School choruses, accompanied by the Upper School Orchestra. In addition, the Upper School drama students served as storytellers and emcees.

Fine Arts Night

At Country Day, the Fine and Performing Arts program exposes students to visual art, general music, choral music, jazz band, theatre, drama, photography, orchestra, and technology-based visual arts. Each year our talented Middle School students have an opportunity to showcase their work to an audience of parents, grandparents, teachers, and fellow students.

Open Studio Night

The Upper School Fine Arts faculty hosted an open studio event for students and parents in the winter. Students guided parents through the art studios, participated in a few activities, and reviewed completed projects and works in progress. A special highlight was the Art 400 projects utilizing the laser cutter in the new makerspace.

CLAY TARGET

It was a historic season for the Clay Target team, bringing home the Georgia Independent Athletic Association Championship team title in the General Division as well as the Individual HOA Championship title won by team captain Owen Haas. The Hornets had a strong season after moving up two classifications to AAA this off-season under second-year Head Coach John Mohring. After losing a large senior class and only having two seniors for the 2022 season, the Hornets finished 5-5 and 5th in the Region. The Hornets played a tough schedule and were competitive in most games. The Hornets were part of the very competitive GHSA Division 1 (Class A-4A) and earned the program’s first berth in playoffs. The defense, led by rusher Anna Shelton, held nine opponents scoreless. Shelton recorded 21 sacks on the season. The offense was led by quarterback Sofia Pablo, running back Eva Beauchamp, and receiver Parker Hall. The team’s most impressive win came against crosstown rival, Savannah Christian Prep (33-0) where Pablo threw for four touchdowns and Beauchamp recorded a pick-six on defense. Congratulations to our 2022 Homecoming Queen Fiona Wilson ‘23, escorted by Michael Grandy ‘23, and first runner-up Molly Fountain ‘23, escorted by Jake Felser ‘23.

Country Day is tremendously grateful for the overwhelming financial support received over the past several years to support the completion of Invest in Excellence Phase I: Academics. The school year kicked off with the opening of Mingledorff Hall, the 32,000 sq. ft. STEM building that houses all Upper School math and science classes, an energy lab and makerspace, and numerous mixed-use spaces for collaborative work and individual study. Planned renovations for two additional Upper School buildings, Minis Hall and Livingston Hall, are also underway. The Minis building will be expanded to include 12 humanities classes, two conference rooms, and a common space for students. The Livingston renovation will elevate our student support programs by providing a dedicated space in the center of campus for our Middle and Upper School learning support and our Upper School counseling department. The new space will include seven student-teacher collaboration spaces, offices for our faculty, and flex areas to be configured for different learning structures.

Celebrating Excellence

Meb and Hurley Ryan ‘82 are the proud parents of two recent graduates Hurley ‘17 and Jack ‘19 and have made two gifts to the Invest in Excellence campaign: “There was no question we would support the campaign in its early days when one of the primary goals was a new Upper School STEM building. SCDS has been the key factor in our sons’ success, and we feel an obligation to pay it forward for future students as those before us have so generously done. When news of the Livingston Hall renovation was announced, we knew we could not sit on the sidelines since the Upper School Learning Support program is so near and dear to our hearts. We will always be enthusiastic advocates for SCDS — giving back is easy when you have been given so much!” — Meb Ryan

Classmates from the Country Day class of 1977 came together to make a collective class gift towards a student workspace in Mingledorff Hall. This class is widely recognized for its continued commitment and devotion to the school, and proudly uses the self-professed acronym, BCE: Best Class Ever.

“It is with great pleasure that the Class of 1977 A.D., B.C.E., participates in the rising from the ashes of the Open Classroom Experiment to the wonders of the latest in modern education.”

— Wiley Wasden III on behalf of his classmates

Robbie (Hoffman) ’64 and Eddie Culver ‘62 are part of Country Day’s only four-generation family, currently spanning 1934 to 2029.

“Savannah Country Day School, formerly Pape School, has been a part of our family for four generations, with Robbie’s mother (Electa Falligant Robertson Hoffman) graduating from Pape School in the class of 1934. We know firsthand the value of the Country Day experience and passed it on to our children, Brian, class of ’94, and Kristin, class of ’97. Now Brian and his wife, Kerri, are watching their children, Helen, class of ’26, and Hayes, class of ’29, flourish in the Country Day environment. We always felt that one of the greatest gifts we could give our children was the best education Savannah could offer. Our family is proud to be a part of Mingledorff Hall and proud to be a part of a legacy that will be passed on to future generations…of our family and many others.” — Eddie Culver ‘62

26 • SAVCDS.ORG WINTER 2023 27

After graduating from Country Day in 2015, Tyler Beauchamp earned a Chemistry degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later went to medical school at the Medical College of Georgia. While in medical school, Tyler worked as a coordinator at the campus mental health clinic and utilized his creative interests of music and writing as an outlet. It was his work at the mental health clinic that inspired him to write his first book, “Freeze Frame,” a captivating story of a high school junior who tries to overcome trauma in his past while changing to a new school. The book is currently an Amazon #1 Best Seller and #1 in Coming of Age Fiction.

Tyler returned to Country Day in the fall to spend time with Upper School students, both in smaller classroom groups and an Upper School assembly in Jelks Auditorium. Students appreciated hearing more about the process of writing and publishing a novel, how he successfully balances medical school with multiple creative explorations, and his push to raise awareness of mental health concerns.

When you spoke at the Upper School assembly, you mentioned that you explored a variety of majors at UNC and volunteered in a health clinic. Why did you decide to pursue medicine?

When I was little, I was actually a patient looking for answers to chronic joint pain. The process took me around research clinics for the better part of my childhood, so I really was exposed to medicine from that side of the curtain. When I got to college, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do. I tried everything under the sun (creative writing, business, psychology, athletic training, and more) because I didn’t want to leave college wondering “What if?” It wasn’t until I tried working with physicians and seeing the other side of the curtain that I realized I had found my place. Medicine would allow me to work hands-on with people through their most difficult days and create a lasting impact in their lives. I could also use my experience as a longtime former patient to better empathize with patients and their struggles. It also doesn’t hurt that you get to wear pajamas to work.

WINTER 2023 • 29
Tyler Beauchamp ‘15

During medical school you channeled your creative side with music and writing. Why was that an important outlet for you and do you feel it complements your ability to care for others? Will your writing ability matter to your medical career?

I put a quote in the front of my book from Dead Poet’s Society that loosely says “Medicine, law, business, these are all noble pursuits necessary to sustain life…but art, poetry, love, this is what we stay alive for.” This is pretty much how I live my life. I definitely get asked, “How are you able to do both art and medicine?” and I always say I don’t know how I would do one without the other. When medicine becomes draining, I escape into writing and music and feel energized to keep going. When I’m having a tough time coming up with what to write next, I think about the problems and captivating stories of the many people I’ve met through medicine and I’m inspired to highlight their struggles. If art and medicine have anything in common, it’s that humanity lies at their core. Being a writer makes me feel more human, and the joy it brings me bleeds over to my time with patients. Continuing my passions outside of medicine will only serve to make me a better doctor and provide more personal care to my patients.

The Covid pandemic hit during your second year of medical school. Tell us about how “Freeze Frame” came to be. How did your earlier work at the health clinic help shape your ideas in “Freeze Frame”?

When quarantine started, I was living in a room with no windows. It definitely psyched me out at times, not knowing if it was light or dark, rainy

or sunny. The mind can sort of wander in a place like that. I remember having these vivid daydreams after a while, and after one of them, it took me a minute or two to figure out if the daydream had actually happened. That’s when this image appeared of a boy who was constantly jumping in and out of reality. I had spent a lot of time working at a free mental health clinic in medical school, and that paired with my own mental health battles helped shape the boy’s story. Almost instantly, I knew I wanted to tell a story about a vulnerable boy overcoming trauma while highlighting key issues of youth mental illness today (social media, peer pressures, anxiety/depression). In my opinion, children are the most vulnerable members of our society, a society that runs at a sprint driven by social media. Children are surrounded by social pressures very few of us can even fathom. And I really don’t mean to say social media is bad. In fact, when used properly, I think it has the power to be our saving grace. But anything powerful can be destructive. I think sometimes we don’t think about just how much power a child with a phone wields, and neither do they. We don’t just need to teach children how to use these tools responsibly, but there needs to be better guidance behind the tools themselves to protect kids. Like I said, the tools aren’t bad inherently. A hammer isn’t bad. It can build a house. But it can also end a life. So that’s where the antagonist was born to combat these counterculture kids. I thought it would be really fascinating for a group of kids with today’s technology and interests to choose to make a movie in a more classic fashion. Setting their work as a competition against social media platformers just made the story more intriguing. It definitely gets meta at times, with a filmmaker losing his grip on reality and seeing films play out before his eyes. But writing the story from Will’s perspective in that way really allowed me to highlight how everyone lives out their own trauma in a unique way, and hopefully readers will see that. You mentioned that the loneliness of the pandemic and your enforced solitude was very difficult. Isn’t writing, by its nature solitary, also very isolating? It seems you might have gone in a direction where you were somehow in a group.

It’s strange to say, for sure, that in isolation I dove into a more solitary act. What’s probably even stranger to say is that when I’m writing I feel completely surrounded by people. You know when you’re having a conversation with yourself in your own head, and you almost end up arguing both sides of a problem? At the end of it, you feel as if the conversation was real, when it was just you with your own thoughts. That’s sort of how I would write dialogue. After I created the characters, their motivations, their mannerisms and little idiosyncrasies, I would sort of place them all in my head and have them talk to each other as real people. They would rag on each other, laugh with each other, and surprise one another. I never felt like I was intentionally coming up with what they were saying, rather scribing as they went along. I spent so much time with these characters—more than I spent with friends or family even at times— that they were very real to me. I know it sounds crazy, but even though I was still in quarantine, writing was where I didn’t feel alone.

“ANYTHING POWERFUL CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE. I THINK SOMETIMES WE DON’T THINK ABOUT JUST HOW MUCH POWER A CHILD WITH A PHONE WIELDS, AND NEITHER DO THEY.“

“IF ART AND MEDICINE HAVE ANYTHING IN COMMON, IT’S THAT HUMANITY LIES AT THEIR CORE.”

“Freeze Frame” is a young adult novel that centers on mental health and recovery from a past trauma. What was the inspiration and why did you feel compelled to tell this story?

The mental health elements of “Freeze Frame” were inspired by my work with the free mental health clinic and my time rotating in pediatrics, but the pandemic as a whole played a major factor. Pretty much everyone I knew was worse for the wear, with stress, anxiety, and depression pervasively spreading. What I really started to notice was how often people were internalizing their worries and trying to numb themselves to their problems. And when it seemed like nothing was going right, it was understandable why people would. It’s easier. I know I did the same. I, like many others, convinced myself that opening up about how I was feeling to my friends and family would only weigh them down; if everyone was doing poorly, I didn’t want to add anything more to anyone’s plate. Ironically, of course, when I learned my friends were doing the same, I wanted nothing more than for them to open up to me so I could help them, so we could weather the storm together. The more isolated we feel, the easier it becomes to do things on our own against our own good. A big message behind “Freeze Frame” is to encourage those struggling to be open and vulnerable, with friends, family, or therapy. We can’t go through life alone, yet the pandemic did everything in its power to make us believe we had to be. I also was very intentional in how the main character, Will, navigates his trauma and recovery in that he finds no easy fix. I didn’t want Will “healed” at the end of the story; I wanted him on the right path. Recovery is a non-linear process. We can take a step forward, and then fall two steps back. But as long as we’re continually trying, making intentional efforts each day to improve and work through our burdens, we’re winning the battle. We collectively need to get better at not only celebrating the small successes others make in their mental health journeys but actively supporting others when they fall a step back.

Harold Evans wrote, “All great writing focuses on the significant details of human experience and in simple, concrete terms.” Do you agree?

Absolutely. We flock to stories because they make us feel something. At the end of the day, that’s the measure of success for art. A good story keeps the reader engaged, a great story consumes its reader and pulls something wonderful out of them. No matter what a story is about, from grounded realism to extreme fantasy, it only works if at its core it connects readers to human experience. The characters we love the most, good or bad, are those whose circumstances we can relate to. Everything else builds from that foundation.

What is next for you on the creative side?

With “Freeze Frame”, I’m currently in discussions with streaming services about a potential series adaptation. Fingers crossed. My next book is the first in a children’s series that is sort of a “Magic Tree House” meets “Medicine.” I have a Young Adult sci-fi trilogy and a more in-depth fantasy trilogy mapped out, but those will come further down the line. I’m in no rush though. Right now, I’m a medical student first, so my priority is finishing my last year and beginning my career in pediatrics. The books will come.

You mentioned starting your career in Pediatrics? Why did you choose that as a specialty?

It’s funny, when I started medical school, pretty much everyone I knew told me I would end up pursuing pediatrics. Of course, me being the stubborn person that I am, I said there was no way and put the idea out of my mind. It wasn’t until my third-year rotations when I was able to really see what it was like day-in, day-out in peds that I realized I had found my place in medicine. So many problems I saw in the hospital ultimately came down to preventable causes. If someone had only started down a different path 10, 20 years ago, they wouldn’t be in the situation they were in now. Working in pediatrics would not only help me fix current problems but hopefully future ones as well. Also, it’s not enough to just say children are the future; they’re the entire solution. Almost every problem in our lives, town, country, and world can be solved by protecting and cultivating the next generation. I can’t think of a better use of my life than to make sure those that come after us are taken care of. On another note, they’re certainly the last source of magic in the world. They just see everything through eyes I wish we all still had. The lows in peds are most definitely difficult, as it is with any field, but I don’t think any other field can beat the highs.

Looking back on your time at SCDS, what lessons resonated with you, from the classroom to the stage to the soccer field?

I think the two greatest lessons I learned from SCDS were: one, every problem has a solution, and two, if something hasn’t been done, be the one to do it. I know specifically in Adam Weber’s physics class, we spent more time breaking down problems to the key components rather than throwing equations we had memorized. And not just physics problems, but ethics, economics, you name it. We learned that every problem we face can be broken down into manageable elements, and when there is no direct solution available, you can create a series of solutions to get to where you want to be. I use those skills nearly every day. SCDS also gave us the freedom to explore our interests outside of the classroom and encouraged us to not settle for what was standard. I know I’ve been told often in medicine to drop writing because it will only distract me from being a better physician. I’ve also been told that if I don’t give 100% of my time to writing, I will never make it as a writer. But what if I feel called to do both? I decided to do what makes me happy, regardless of what was said could or couldn’t be done. I hope that people see that and feel encouraged to pursue their passions regardless of what’s “the norm.”

What was the most challenging experience you had while at Country Day?

What about the most memorable moment?

I think the most challenging experience was when I hurt my neck the first football game my freshman year. I had spent middle school playing football, and a lot of my friends were made from those experiences. I was a lifer and spent most of my Friday nights growing up at Hornets’ games hoping one day I would be on the field. My very first game, I injured my neck and medically was forced to give up football for good. In an instant, those young dreams were over and the image of what I expected high school to be was gone. It had been a large part of my identity, and I was completely terrified of what I was supposed to be without it. It took time, but the injury led me to explore new interests I never had let myself experience, much of which were in the arts. Everything certainly happens for a reason, and I wouldn’t change how anything happened. The most memorable experience was probably my ongoing debate about UNC with my college advisor. When we were coming up with schools to look at, she threw it on the list and said “I just see you there.” I told her she was out of her mind and I had zero interest in going there. No one I knew had ever gone there, after all. I had a plan of my own, and I “knew exactly what I was going to do with my life.” With every college visit I went on, she would remind me to go visit UNC and I repeatedly told her I didn’t want to. She eventually broke me down and I visited near the end of my first-semester senior year. I instantly fell in love, and I threw out that careful plan of mine. I’m so thankful she broke through my stubbornness because she led me to the perfect fit and taught me to be open to the unknown.

Surprisingly, one of them was not mine, but was signed by Jon Burke and Craig Haynie, who I presume would be considered affiliates of our class as they did not follow us to 9th grade. My attempts to locate them have not been successful. If any of you are still connected with either of them, please let me know.

“Otherwise, I always get a sense of déjá vu when we’ve attended our children’s events at Great Mills High School in Lexington Park, MD. Teresa Ashman writes, “The SCDS Class of 1982 recently had their 40th Reunion. In fact, there were two reunions because Hurricane Ian marred the plans of many out-of-town alumni who were planning to attend the originally scheduled date. Nevertheless, those who were more local followed our class motto “Carpe Diem” and we went ahead and had a party. The rescheduled date had several out-of-towners making the journey home to celebrate despite Hurricane Nicole’s attempt to derail a second attempt. Between the two events, 40 people attended. There were many alumni who had not seen each other in decades, and everyone was happy to catch up and reminisce. The common refrain was that it was hard to believe that so much time had passed, yet everyone was easy to recognize! I choose to interpret that as we all still look 18!

“The person who traveled the furthest, Buford Scott came from London, his home for over two decades. Katherine (Gardner) Martz traveled over 2,000 miles from her home in Park City, UT. We were all pleasantly surprised by the last-minute arrival of Dwayne Leik, who drove round trip (~10 hours) from Asheville, NC on the day of the reunion, though his previous career as a race car driver may have cut that time significantly. Charlie Elmer surprised us by coming from the DC area for the original reunion date, not at all deterred by Ian’s forceful path. Susan (Hershey) Smith came from her new home in Buffalo after 20+ years in Nashville. Although a northern move may seem surprising after retiring, Susan and her husband, Lee, were originally from Buffalo and usually spend their summers across the border in Canada. The remaining attendees all currently live in GA, many in the Savannah area (Teresa Ashman [recently returned], Elizabeth (Sheehan) Hamrick, George Hassell, Debbie (White) Hornsby, Austin Kennedy, Jeanne (Howell) McMillan, Lisa (Massey) Muller, Hurley Ryan, Brendan Sheehan) and the rest in the Atlanta region (Ashley (Mulherin) Dollar, Lucy (Sparkman) Crosswell, Martha Parker, Margaret (McCullough) Russell, Melanie (Cobb) Sprung, Julie (Allen) Onians)

“We had many volunteers who reached out to class members multiple times, though sadly both dates conflicted with several classmates’ schedules. It is hard to compete with football. Also, very special shoutouts to Jeanne for floral arrangement, gift bags, and decorations, and to Debbie for creating a great video that started with a clip of our graduation ceremony (thanks Ray Bailey’s dad being an early camcorder user) and many pictures over the years, including prior reunions.”

On Saturday, November 12, the class of 1982 gathered at the home of Teresa Ashman in downtown Savannah to celebrate their 40th reunion. The reunion was originally scheduled for October 1, but due to the threat of a hurricane, many classmates were unable to travel to Savannah. Between the two parties, 40 classmates were in attendance. Tucker Compton writes, “I am more than excited to share that I am starting up a new role as Client Advisor at Sterling Seacrest Pritchard! I had worked for a local insurance agency in Chattanooga, TN for the past six years, and in moving back home, it just made sense to join the biggest and best agency in Savannah. I have learned a lot in my past roles as a claims adjuster, underwriter and agent since graduating from UGA’s risk management/ insurance program in 2013, and I can’t wait to bring that expertise to new clients here. I am focusing on mid-large sized construction, solar, and healthcare related companies to provide property, casualty, and bonding insurance needs. I also plan on continuing SSP’s continued efforts of giving back to our community that I grew to love. I can’t wait to get back ingrained in the city that molded me into who I am today!”

Alumni Oyster Roast: Hornet Home for the Holidays

Every year on the day before Thanksgiving, generations of Hornets kick off the holidays with an all-alumni oyster roast. On November 23, sounds of chatter and laughter between friends echoed over Delegal Creek, only to be interrupted when the crowd spilled over the picnic tables with each batch of steamed oysters. This beloved Country Day tradition builds memories and larger groups of Hornets year after year. We look forward to seeing everyone again in 2023!

remembrances

The Country Day community was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of longtime faculty member Cesar Justo Noble at the age of 90. Señor Noble passed away peacefully on October 23, 2022. Sr. Noble and his wife Dottie arrived at SCDS in the fall of 1976 and quickly immersed themselves in school and student life, with Dottie eventually joining the Upper School faculty in 1984. Sr. Noble taught Spanish in Upper School for 20 years and served the school in several other capacities, including foreign language department chair, student club advisor, and coordinator of the summer travel abroad program in Spain. He is also remembered for assembling winning sports programs at Country Day—he was instrumental in starting the baseball program and growing the boys’ soccer program into city champs. We offer our heartfelt condolences to Sr. Noble’s life-long friend and wife, Dottie, their son, Rick Noble ‘88 and the entire family.

We are deeply saddened to share the death of cherished teacher Elizabeth “Libby” Blake. Mrs. Blake passed away on August 13, 2022, with her husband and daughter at her side. Mrs. Blake taught at Country Day for 21 years in a myriad of positions, most notably Middle School science teacher and department chair. The Country Day community offers our sincerest condolences to Libby’s husband, Willson Blake, daughter, Virginia Blake ‘00, and the entire family.

We are saddened to share the death of music teacher, Louis H. “Bud” Rhymes, Jr. Mr. Rhymes passed away suddenly on June 4, 2022, after a short illness. Mr. Rhymes conducted the Troubadours, the Upper School Chorus, and the Jazz Ensemble at Savannah Country Day from 1975 to 1983. We offer our sincerest condolences to Mr. Rhymes’ family and friends.

With a heavy heart, we share that retired Country Day food service director Ruby Constance Benson Bacon age 103, died at home on November 5, 2022. Mrs. Bacon was the food service director at Savannah Country Day from 1957-1984. The Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America sent her a huge arrangement of flowers for her 100th birthday as she held the record for their oldest and longest-retired client. During her time at SCDS, her claim to fame was her delicious apple crisp! The Country Day community offers our sincerest condolences to Mrs. Bacon’s son Marc Bacon ‘70, granddaughter Caroline (Creaser) Pritchard ‘98, and the entire family.

We share the death of beloved teacher Patricia Anne Shelley Fox with a heavy heart. Mrs. Fox passed away on August 8, 2022, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Fox generously served Country Day in a multitude of roles from 1981-1993, including Middle School English teacher and Coach for the girls varsity tennis team. The Country Day community offers our sincerest condolences to Pat’s husband, Kevin Fox, sons, Michael Fox ‘86, Alex Fox ‘90, and Christopher Fox ‘93, and the entire family.

Country Day alumni Florence (Minis) Slatinsky ‘94, Liz (Lientz) Macfadyen ‘96, Fitz Haile ‘95, Denton Stone ‘88, Marc Bailey ‘92, and Amy (Benton) Haenel ‘89 lovingly served as ushers at Mrs. Fox’s funeral.

THE SAVANNAH COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL

ANNUAL REPORT

2021-2022

Dear Country Day Community,

My new favorite place on campus is the Bernstein Conference Room in Mingledorff Hall. In my capacity as Board Chair, I attend a lot of meetings, and when they take place in this spot, I typically take a seat where I can watch the parade of incredibly youthful faces and strides of the students. The freedom they enjoy post-Covid to roam the campus and gather in groups seems to agree with them as I mostly witness smiles and laughter; their proximity serves as a meaningful reminder of the school’s mission to prepare them for college and life. And that preparation starts so early! Recently I went into Mrs. Gilpin’s first grade class as a “mystery reader,” but the real mystery is how she inspires children today as magically as she did thirty years ago when she taught my daughter. Now my other daughter’s son is in her class, and throughout campus I’m struck by the sense of community that is palpable at SCDS. There are so many alumni whose children are now enrolled, and as always, many alumni have chosen to come back and be part of the school’s faculty or staff or to be faithful donors. We have a wonderful history to celebrate and a future made secure by the generosity of so many families, some of whom are just starting their SCDS journey.

The Board of Trustees is very grateful for the support of so many of you who have given generously. The Fund for Country Day surpassed its $700,000 goal, reaching $707,863 with 1,084 donors, 185 of which were first-time gifts. In the last year, 22% of annual fund donors increased their gifts and grandparent giving continues to increase well above national averages. The percentage of alumni parents giving is at 14%, with the national average at 9.5%.

I would like to thank each member of the Board of Trustees and ask that you thank them as well. We are fortunate to have such a strong group of leaders who give their time and talent to guide the school. Our Head of School, Kef Wilson, is in his tenth year in this role and continues to lead with a commitment to the success of Savannah Country Day’s future. He and his administrative team work tirelessly to ensure that SCDS continues as an excellent school and an incredible environment for learning—a place where students are encouraged to think critically, value different viewpoints, appreciate innovation, and begin a lifetime love of learning.

Sincerely,

GEORGIA PRIVATE SCHOOL TAX CREDIT / APOGEE

In 2008, the state of Georgia passed legislation allowing GA tax payers to redirect their tax dollars (personal and/or corporate) to the Georgia private school of their choice. Each year, the Georgia Private School Tax Credit Program/Apogee plays a critical role in the School’s overall financial aid program. Participation in this program has an enormous impact on the School’s ability to provide tuition assistance for qualified students seeking a Savannah Country Day education.

The Honor Roll of Donors contains names of individuals who have made gifts to The Savannah Country Day School that were processed through the Office of Advancement between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022. There could be several reasons that your name does not appear in what you believe to be the appropriate giving level—or not appear at all:

You made your gift either before July 1, 2021, or after June 30, 2022. You gave more during this period than you realize; your name may be in the next giving level.

You made a pledge instead of an outright gift. If you made a pledge between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022, but chose to begin fulfilling it after June 30, 2022, your name will not appear in this honor roll, which reflects only gifts received.

If we omitted your name in error or if you have questions or concerns, please contact Ann Lerch, Director of Annual Giving, at 912-961-8822 or alerch@savcds.org.
