Virginia Tech Interior Design Portfolio Fall 2023
Introduction Hello! My name is Savannah Mullin and I am a fourth-year Interior Design student at Virginia Tech. I have always had a love for design and its ability to change the way we feel in an environment. I want to impact a large array of people by putting passion into my work. Design has a lot of opportunity for self growth and that is my biggest goal in my career. In my free time, I love to paint, dance, and learn new skills and hobbies.

Freeways in Dallas, Texas, have become architectural monuments. Everything of interest and adjacent suburbs are alongside a freeway. The space alludes to the extensive highway system in Dallas, while linking the design tensions together to provide integration integration. Blending the dynamic spirit of Dallas with the cutting edge workplace design, comes together to represent a complex, yet free flowing space. The highway system can create this level of tension which can get relief from its exits. Veering off onto new areas provides a sense of calmness. There is this tightness that Covid added, which can be alluded to in the highway system. Throughout the years, these exiting entities provided freedom. The company is starting fresh and moving forward from this past to create new postitive experiences.

The use of reds and blacks throughout the building are inspired by the abundant highway systems in Dallas, Texas. Red is a color associated with energy and passion. In the context of a highway system, red can symbolize movement and the bustling traffic and urban life that Dallas comes with. It reflects the consistant motion of the city. city Red is also a color used in transportation symbols, which shows off the highway system’s role in connectivity throughout Dallas as well as my space. Black and darker hues are seen as modernity and sleekness. Black can also create a very strong contrast with red and enhances the balance between the fast paced movement of the highways, and the stability of the office enviornment. Red is a color associated with the landscapes of Texas, including the iconic red dirt. Keeping the sense of regional identity alive will bring a connection to the enviornment.
Universal Design How we hear a building is very important. The space should provide acoustic cues and signals that define each area and contribute to the enjoyment. In the building, Next, acoustical panels and carpeted flooring provides an acoustical plan and quiets the room. Lighting is also very essential to our physical and emotional health. Lights are placed in screens on each workstation for personalized brightness. Lighting also plays heavily on how colors can appear. The CRI quantifies a light source to reproduce colors without a natural light source. Disorientation may occur if the space does not have correct color rendition. As for furnishings, there are a wide variety of shapes and sizes. As Next is a Steelcase project, ergonomic options should be available to aleviate any injuries and stress. The furniture chosen for this space supports better posture and adjustable storage for optimal use.
Client Presentation Room Layout 1
To meet the needs of many, the client presentation room needed to be able to move around easily. As seen in the axonometrics, tables can be arranged for collaboration, as well as forward focused. Mobility is a highly necessary topic that can be seen throughout the space. Mobile desks, chairs, and large clearances were heavily considered when putting the space together.

02. Uninhibited: Music Recording Studio Fourth-Year Project
Uninhibited Music Recording Studio, Studio owned by Theo Star, represents vintage Rock n’ Roll. To be uninhibited is to express your feelings without any restraint. Star wants just this in his skybox. Uninhibited wants to bring to life a sense of letting go. The company sees that the problem area in today’s music and society is holding back on potential. This skybox incorporates spontaneous material choices and rounded geometry. Moody, grunge colors make the space feel intimate while pops of colorful lighting and textured patterns ease the space to feel comforting to all. The stage is what a concert forms around. My space is a reflection of the iconic Rock n’ Roll stage set up and life. This comes from iconic backdrops, LED screens, and lighting rigs. A feeling of individuality into a cohesive connection forms as the pieces of rock click together to tell a story.

Sustainability was a large portion of this design. Using recycled matierals such as Inside Weather Furniture Supply. They deliver high quality performance and ecofriendly materials. It is non-toxic and safe, uses recycled materials, is energy efficient and energy star compliant. As for the leather used in the space, it is completely sustainable. Leather working Group works to guarentee emissions are generated during the production process and the quality and appeal of the final product is durable. Recycled cotton is used in all spaces to ensure the continuation of sustainablity in the area as well. This is used by the combination of post-industrial or postconsumer materials. With this, textile waste is diverted from landfills and is better overall for the enviornment.

Ceiling light structures are assembled in a way to allow both areas of the space to come together cohesively. Along with this, the center piece that contains a music creating station, was created as a stage like area for users to allude their experience to that of a stage setup. The large scene of lighting and colors to light up the space is a large guiding factor in this area.

Quiet Space Perspective The top perspective represents my concept in the most visual way possible. Warm toned wall sconce lights placed between hanging chairs allows for calm and serene feelings. Lighting was a huge portion of this design concept and placing lights in hidden spots gave emphasis to knooks for reading and comfort. The bottom perspective shows off the classroom within the library. This space uses cool lighting to take down the warmth a bit and provide an active learning environment. Taking away from the heat of the outdoors was also a large influence into the color choice for this room. Leaning into the blues and cooler lighting choices was best for a calm yet focused space.

04. Health & Wellness: CaaMTech Third-Year Project Located at 315 Albernarle Ave SE, Roanoke, VA, this newly restored 7500 sqft building has been designed based on entrepreneurs and as well as CaaMTech, a psychadellic tech company that researches drugs to help with anxiety and depression. Through the use of biophillic and sustainable designs, designs the space comes together with curvelinear lines for a comforting flow.
Kitchen Perspective
Office Perspective Perspectives The spaces above and below depict a sample perspectives of what encapsulates the concept that the design was hoping to reach. Above is one of the many offices adapted with full accessibility to overhead storage, large table space for work, and double windows for maximum light. Below, one may see the large working hot desk space. With 19 workspaces, individuals may choose areas with a lower ceilling plane for intimacy, to a higher, more open space for an airy work environment. With entrepreneur offices to the left of the entrance, and the tech company, CaaMTech, on the right of the entrance, individuals are surrounded with a heavy and flowing workspace.

Kitchen Axon
Kitchen Axonometric This axon displays a very important communal area of those who are inhabiting this workspace. The kitchen was an area that was made to give off a comfortable, yet professional feel. With hanging pendants over seating areas, the space is able to radiate that initial concept of personal space and comfort.
First Floor Perspective
Large Axonometric This large axon of the second floor shows how spacially sound the area has managed to become. The community space has allowed for a multitude of different seating options and the transitional space from there to the workplace allows for a smooth change.
