EDITOR’S LETTER

I'M NO MATH WHIZ, but eight hours at the office (a light schedule, for many of us) amounts to a third of the day spent at work. As we set out to build the first-ever Design That Works issue of Savannah HOMES, we cast a wide net to find functional spaces — offices, studios, showrooms, even a medical spa — that look, well, much lovelier than they need to. Halfway through the editing process and feeling fully inspired, I decided to give my own office a refresh and enlisted the help of my favorite mother-daughter design duo, Lynn and Brooke Rahn of Clutter Furnishings & Interiors. The Rahns insisted on a good foundation in the form of a seagrass rug. From there, we anchored the room with a burled olivewood cabinet, a white lacquer waterfall desk and a blue floral daybed from home that my husband could never quite wrap his head around, anyway. The next layer was art, collected over a decade and spruced up with a few pieces acquired expressly for this occasion: a set of lush gouache botanicals by Louisa Dunn, a pair of resin flower studies by Mary Margaret Monsees and custom portraits of my dogs by Lynn’s husband, Jimmy Rahn. Then came a tomato-red metal chair with a zebra seat, a wicker rolling desk chair that I still wonder if I dreamed into existence and a slew of fun extras — blush velvet pillows from Garland Luxury Pillows, ceramics from Jennifer Huskey, a porcelain oyster dish from Element Clay Studio, kilim mats from Picker Joe’s, trays from West Elm and PW Short General Store and a chic antiqued-iron wastebasket. On the day of the photoshoot, Brooke swapped out two crystal lamps for a massive urn-shaped pair and filled an old silver champagne bucket with three dozen tulips. We were done, and it was perfect. Of course, a workspace never stays that way: as I type this, my desk is littered with pages to proof, and there are three beverages within arm’s reach. Yet when I pause and look around, everything I see makes me happy, not least of all my granny’s pie bird perched on the sideboard, just singing its song all day long. We all have to work. Why not make it beautiful?

THE BAR AT Savannah Spirits Chop House will take you back — not all the way to the 1870s, when the three-story building was completed, but to the bold colors, shiny details and geometries of 1920s chic. To achieve the modernized Art Deco look, Heather Smith of Heather Smith Designs “utilized a mix of the English styles and French finishes that made the era so

distinctive.” As a nod to the building’s past, both the bar and the bar tables (designed by Smith) were repurposed from wood flooring removed from the building during the renovation. Throughout the space, custom blackand-white tile, wood paneling and retro-pattern ceiling tiles pair with rich emerald and copper tones to bolster the luxe ambience of the bar area.

Q&A

Five Minutes With ...

Tomas Georgi, VP of business development at Julian Chichester, who hosted Savannah's interior design insiders for a haute lunch at Husk to promote a new showroom at ADAC ON THE JULIAN CHICHESTER GRAND TOUR OF THE SOUTHEAST: “All of this

This Royere side chair and Fontana mirror are among the new Julian Chichester pieces to be introduced at High Point Market, the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world.

is in anticipation of our beautiful 6,000-square-feet furniture, lighting and accessory showroom opening at Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) in Atlanta. We’re very excited, as the South has always been a strong market for us, and we’re looking to grow both our residential and hospitality presence here. Because this region has such a rich legacy of craftsmanship and furniture making, people seem to recognize and appreciate a well-made cabinet or a beautifully upholstered chair. It’s an exciting time to be a designer in the South.”

ON CULTURAL CROSSOVER AND ACHIEVING A MARVELOUS MIX: “Julian Chichester, the gentleman and the

company, are both very English. However, we have a strong affinity for the South — we feel completely at home here, both stylistically and culturally. Southern interior designers are discerning and look to us for tasteful re-interpretations of historical styles, from Jacques Adnetesque leather wrapped cabinets to midcentury light oak side chairs to Moos Pedersen-inspired dining tables. The noble materials we favor are valued by this design community — fine fruitwoods, vellum under lacquer, brass hand-imprinted with shagreen patterns, hammered bronze — and our maximalist mix of bold pattern, florals and bright solids appeals to this audience as well.”

ON SAVANNAH'S MANY CHARMS: “Savannah is a

dream! The beauty of this city is intoxicating. The architecture always impresses — from English Regency to contemporary, a juxtaposition that reminds me of our furniture. But what strikes me most about Savannah is the friendly and collaborative nature of the people we met. For our event, we worked with such helpful and lovely vendors as Roots Up Gallery, florist Madame Chrysanthemum and Husk Savannah. Everyone was a pleasure.”

MAKERS

JENNIFER HUSKEY took her first MADE ceramics class at 19 and has dabbled LOCAL in community classes ever since. “I’m basically self-taught,” says the co-owner of Gaslight Group properties B. Matthew’s Eatery, East End Provisions, The 5 Spot and Abe’s on Lincoln — but there’s nothing naïf about her sleek sculptural vessels and raw clay finishes. In the Midtown studio where she’s worked since 2017 (now alongside an intern, Savannah College of Art & Design jewelry student Maya McCormack), the doors are always open, keeping the space flooded with natural light. Plants and incense help to set the scene, and she flips between meditation podcasts or Netflix stand-up specials, depending on the day. Huskey’s pieces are beautiful on their own and paired with flowers, branches or anything special enough to fill them.

DESIGN BRIEF

Masters of Marble PROJECT: Carol and Chat Howard’s master bath reimagined PRINCIPAL: Abigail Powell, interior designer at Ellsworth Design OUR TWO MAIN DESIGN OBJECTIVES were brightening up the space and designing for the Howards’ future needs. First, we changed out a large Jacuzzi tub/shower combination for large walk-in shower and planned the bench in close proximity to a handheld shower, grab bar and niche for ease of use. It was a dream to work on this project with Carol and Chat, who own Sandpiper Supply, because we had access to so many fixtures and finishes.

32

SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM

The polished nickel grab bar is a good example — it’s beautiful, but it also serves a dual function as the slide bar for the handheld shower. A curbless shower would have required floor joist alterations, so we went for a low curb instead. Since the vanity area was dark even during daylight hours, we doubled down on lighting, using mirrored medicine cabinets, vanity lights and an articulating shaving mirror, boosting visibility throughout. Painting the vanity and linen cabinet white and using a light gray marble also brightened up the entire bathroom. Incorporating varied shapes of both Carrara and Bardiglio marble tile adds to the overall luxury of the room. Photography by RICHARD LEO JOHNSON

Home Offices JUST A DECADE ago the words “home office” conjured visions of rolling chairs on plastic floor mats, plastic office accessories and hulking metal filing cabinets. Today, thankfully, and with the help of Pinterest, homeowners are transforming home offices into stylish, thoughtful spaces. With smaller computers and wireless everything, these rooms can look just as amazing as the rest of your abode (and maybe even double as a sitting room). Consider these five things when sprucing up your workspace. PAINT COLOR: The least expensive way to transform a room dramatically is to add color. Want something cozy and masculine? Consider a dark tone, and don’t just stop with the walls: Paint the trim and maybe even the ceiling the same color (pause for effect). Maybe you want something light and bright? Commit to a creamy white — and not just with paint. The trick is to add other layers of cream with the upholstery, drapery and rugs. These layers keep the room from feeling boring. Add some brass accents, an antique piece or even a vase of flowers for pop. The end result is soothing and timeless.

your files, router and printer. The result is a beautiful, functional focal point in your office. It is also extremely satisfying to close the doors on the clutter and pretend that your life is in order. THE CHAIR: This is where style can

really go south. Look for an office chair that can double as seating in your family room. Chairs on castors are excellent for ease of movement from the desk to storage. Hidden castors or brass are best, never plastic! Always choose a fabric that can handle wear or consider getting delicate fabrics professionally treated so they will stand up to everyday use. LIGHTING: Good lighting is jewelry for

your office. Make sure what you choose complements the overall look you are trying to achieve while also providing adequate wattage. Layer your lighting by adding a desk lamp (or two) and wallmounted picture lights in addition to overhead fixtures.

STORAGE: Not only is walking into a

Flourish Collaborative BRAND STRATEGY AND IDENTITY DESIGN STUDIO Erica Kelly & Caty Cote, Owners

The keys to a friendly office space are providing areas for collaboration (and always having Twizzlers). Our open space encourages conversation and collaboration on projects. A designated place to lay out sketches, color swatches, Sharpies and Post-it notes allows us to see how all of our design elements work and play together. We love being right in the heart of downtown, and we especially love the tall windows that are prevalent in Savannah's historic architecture. So much natural light! The biggest challenge in designing an office is identifying everyone’s work preferences and creating a space where all feel welcome and most productive.

We like to keep bits of our personality in the office by using our own accessories to style our desks and display cubes.

Everything should have a place: a dedicated drawer, bin or folder. We owe all of this organization knowledge to our client and dear friend Marge VonLehmden with House of Von!

As much as we sell a product, we also sell design. I like clean, simple uncluttered spaces with a mix of old and new. I love art. Mostly all the art is local. My favorite elements of the space are the conference room and the library. The old brick against glass. All like things go in the same place. This way we always know what we have and what we need. Additionally, we make sure to instill in our staff our standards and the importance of respecting the space and coworkers.

Our office space is comprised of two rooms. Both areas are open concept, so we’ve found it’s important for each person to have a dedicated work space in order to feel organized. We are both drawn to clean, classic design, and this is reflected in the interiors. Clary [Bosbyshell, our designer] was able to pull together a range of elements that felt very “Lake” — with lots of blues of course! One room can be used for multiple purposes. In our main office, the seating area anchors the room and offers an informal area for gathering. The conference table on one side of the space is used mostly for meetings and meals. The other side of the room accommodates our desks and a storage area for swatches, samples and photo shoot props.

WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS Emily Testa LeMaster, Editor-in-Chief

When you’re making a magazine that’s designed to inspire, you need to feel inspired by your work environment. We wanted this room to reflect the warm, colorful and personal ethos of Savannah magazine and of the city itself — and thanks to Brooke and Lynn Rahn of Clutter Furnishings & Interiors, I think it does. Regardless of where you spend your 9-to-5 hours, a little office effort never hurt anyone. My friend Liz keeps clutter corralled in beautiful containers and stays motivated with a framed family photo and an Eleanor Roosevelt quote. Another friend and former coworker, McKenzie, recommends a five-dollar monochromatic bouquet every week, ceramic dishes for paperclips and a leather swatch instead of a mouse pad. Up the ante with a set of silverware from home, a real drinking glass and a water pitcher at your desk. Add lamps (overhead fluorescents are a major nono) and dark chocolate (an absolute necessity) and, boom, you’re a working adult. Buy local! Savannah’s creative community means access to great art and artists. We brought in pieces from Katherine Sandoz, Shea Slemmer, Tom Francis, Helen Durant, Colin Douglas Gray, Mary Margaret Monsees, Louisa Dunn, Ben Ward, Daniel Smith and Jimmy Rahn to create the gallery wall of our (Hostess City) dreams.

Family Tides

Two generations make a life on Coffee Bluff By ANNA CHANDLER Photography by BEAU KESTER

IN THE CORNER of Carla and David McCorvey’s kitchen, among the calming hues and clean lines of their modern coastal home, is a single vintage tile. Its homespun charm stands out with its adage: “No matter where I serve my guests, they seem to like my kitchen best.” In a home adorned with memories 52

SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM

and stylish new touches, Carla cherishes this token of her family’s journey. It was originally a part of the décor in her parents’ home while they were attending veterinary school, and Carla packed it up to hang in her college dorm room, as she followed in her parents’ footsteps to join the Case Veterinary legacy. Through

the years, the tile’s observation still rings true, and there is much for guests to like about the McCorveys’ luminous kitchen and their open-concept home perched on Savannah’s Coffee Bluff. For the family of four, the six-bedroom, five full bath and two half-bath house is a forever home 15 years in the making.

With the help of Konter Quality Homes, the McCorveys’ vision of an inviting, airy Lowcountry nest came to life, and the whole crew officially moved in in December 2018 after purchasing the land and its original home in 2003. The Coffee Bluff area was not unfamiliar to Savannah native Carla and husband David, originally from Atlanta — Carla’s parents moved into the house next door when she was 16 years old. They quickly fell in love with a neighborhood where generations of fishers cast lines into the Little Ogeechee River, and neighbors share their grapefruit tree bounties with the Carmelite Monastery nuns just down the road. “It’s very much a community here,” Carla attests.

54

SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM

Carla and David met at the University of Georgia and moved to Savannah in 1999. After living in apartments and in a house in Midtown, they intended to build on Dutch Island. Plans were drawn, but their Midtown house sold sooner than expected, and Carla, David, their threemonth-old daughter and dog moved in with Carla’s folks as the Dutch Island plans were finalized. Then, suddenly, the house next to Carla’s parents was put on the market. “We thought, ‘there’s no way we can make this happen — we’re only 30’,” Carla remembers. “But we went out on a limb with the financing, and things have just fallen into place. We’re here forever now.” After 15 years, they decided to start

from scratch, building a new home on the property that was roomy enough for their kids, pets and guests, yet cozy and comfortable. Guests enter the property via a driveway that winds beneath a moss-covered live oak and charming tree house. Carla’s taste for Lowcountry style is immediately evident in the foyer, where oyster shells, natural fibers and clean white shiplap add a vintage touch. Prints and original works from Southern artists like Ben Jam, Ray Ellis, Sharon Saseen and Lori Keith Robinson add to the local aesthetic. To the left of the entryway, the dining room is anchored by a hand-carved table that had belonged to the owners of the original house. The tabletop is a gate door from Mexico, and two ox yokes serve as legs.

Texture abounds in the open concept kitchen and living room — a red brick backsplash behind the kitchen range, a rope-and-wood chandelier crowning a circular dining room table on a woven rug. Driftwood and other natural finds from the river are lovingly displayed alongside family photos, and cut crystal gleams in the crisp, backlit butler’s pantry. And from any seat in the house, there isn’t a bad view to be found. “We have 180 degrees of horizon,” Carla says, gesturing to the expansive view that’s framed by the living room’s French doors. A small porch with rocking chairs is a tempting relaxation spot and leads to an adjoining screened-in porch, also accessible from the kitchen. The breezy room offers a wide view and a fireplace for cooler days, and the wall-mounted TV makes it David’s favorite spot to watch the Georgia Bulldogs play.

Standing on the McCorveys’ dock, one has a direct line of sight to Richmond Hill. Getting to the Richmond Hill Marina and Fish Tales restaurant would take an hour and a half by car, but the McCorveys prefer to travel by boat, a mere 15-minute journey. “In this area, there’s not an interruption in your view,” says Carla. “And there are no lights — just the twinkle of Richmond Hill. There’s not a big marina, no parkway or powerlines. Even a lot of the coveted places have something manmade that you’re looking at. Here, it’s just flat-out gorgeous.” Due to structural problems, the home’s original dock had to be rebuilt and moved; now, it dovetails perfectly with the center lines of the home. The spacious dock

Upstairs, the views continue from their daughter’s room, the family room, and Carla and David’s master bedroom, which includes an elegant master bathroom and walk-in closet, accessed through a handcarved Mexican door that was original to the McCorveys' old home. There is also a bedroom downstairs that is currently for guests but will serve as a more easily accessible master bedroom when the couple gets older. For now, Carla and David watch sunrises over Wassaw Sound while enjoying their morning coffee on their upstairs bedroom porch (the walk-in closet is outfitted with a Keurig for easy caffeine access). The kids will be moved out before the McCorveys know it, but the adjoining garage’s upstairs bedrooms and the two acres of family land will be waiting for them, along with shared dinners, fishing sojourns and quality time together for generations to come.

A Place to Pine For On private Pine Island, Japanese aesthetic meets Lowcountry living By SARA WATSON Photography by RICHARD LEO JOHNSON

THE ETHOS OF PINE ISLAND, a 56-acre private island between Beaufort and Hilton Head Island, is nicely summed up in a resonant quote from Pablo Picasso: “Art is the elimination of the unnecessary.” Picasso’s words have a companion in lifestyle guru Marie Kondo, whose KonMari method and accompanying Netflix show, “Tidying Up,” contends that one’s home should contain only items that spark joy. Though decades apart, Picasso and Kondo are unexpected

contemporaries who share an implied maxim: Superfluous stuff stifles pleasure. In today’s more-ismore, consumer-obsessed climate, the paragon of luxury is striving — not settling — for less. Enter Pine Island. The nearly 5,000-square-foot build on a 22-acre parcel of the island includes four bedrooms, 4.5 baths and Japanese influence throughout. In particular, the house best embodies shibusa, a tenet of Japanese aesthetic focused on subtle, humble beauty.

Most of the home’s surfaces are rendered in warm, richly variegated American woods and sustainably harvested tropical hardwoods. and feel of an enchanted, Japanese forest. But don’t forget to look up: local artisan woodworkers handled every aspect of the home’s construction, and the exquisite arched ceilings are reminiscent of the inside of a boat (more specifically, a luxury yacht). As for other interior hallmarks, the single-story home keeps it simple and

spacious, but striking. Upholstery and linens are largely neutral with dashes of imperial red and jade. Furnishings are mostly wood, but they’re spectacular: note the real-deal Stickley Furniture chairs, or the burl wood table from George Nakashima, considered a father of the American craft movement. durable and suitably unpretentious choice. Recessed and track lighting enhances the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen without distracting the eye, while a pair of lantern-like pendants punctuates the main living space with a pop of turquoise patina. On a sunny day, skylights and plentiful windows make lighting fixtures moot, anyway. Craft movement art and

idiosyncratic keepsakes convey the owners’ tastes: a menagerie of animals affixed to the stone fireplace; a sailboat model; a pair of larger-than-life lizard sculptures; turn-of-the-century Grueby pottery; mid-century ceramics from Peter Voulkos; a bulbous, stone chimenea. Literally topping it all off is a pagoda-like roof, rounding out the Japanese motif.

The overall effect isn’t so much East meets West as East meets South. Inside, you could have an elaborate tea ceremony worthy of those held in the traditional Higashiyama District of Kyoto. Just as comfortably, you could shuck and roast oysters outside with Lowcountry views unfurling before you: salt marshes studded with native saw palmetto and bayberry, and the languid curve of a river at the edge of the horizon. It’s the kind of fluctuating space that ends up being game for any which whim. I, for one, would love to spend an afternoon writing at Pine Island. I’d equally enjoy wiling away the day at the property’s expansive and tranquil pool. As it turns out, this chameleon quality is very much by design, both indoors and out. Washington, D.C.-based landscape architecture firm Oehme, van Sweden & Associates handled the landscape design, adding unexpected vegetation like ornamental sweet grass in a cloudlike swath of cotton-candy pink. Such a soft and dreamy color perhaps sounds an odd choice, but it just works. The firm’s previous projects and clients include New York Botanical Garden, Chicago Botanic Garden and numerous federal memorials. In addition to a distinguished landscape, the home also includes access to a list of amenities nearly as long as the 80-foot private dock: there’s an equestrian facility, golf and sporting clays, artist programs, a working farm and 30 miles of nature trails all nearby as part of the larger Spring Island residential community. Rather than considering the home and surrounding Lowcountry landscape of Pine Island as two separate entities, it’s easier to envision them as a single, cohesive space. Here, the indoors and outdoors are harmoniously linked as one without obstruction or pretension. In other words — actually, in Picasso’s words — Pine Island is all about eliminating the unnecessary. It’s art.

REAL HOMES

Downtown Distinction Savannah couple builds a forever home with historical charm and modern conveniences By NANCY R. FULLBRIGHT Photography by JEREMIAH HULL

ON EAST MACON STREET near Madison Square, a five-story, redbrick Romantic Revival building once housed the city’s first YMCA, where many a Savannah boy learned to swim. Designed and built by esteemed architect Henrik Wallin in 1908, it anchored one corner of a square already graced with significant structures such as the Green-Meldrim and Sorrel-Weed houses. Unlike those historic treasures, however, the YMCA did not survive the city’s mid-century urban renewal wrecking ball, and it was demolished in 1970. One of the boys who splashed in that YMCA pool never imagined he would grow up to build a house on the

same spot where he enjoyed hours of play as a child. But he wound up doing exactly that, with a modern infill that fits seamlessly into the historic fabric of the neighborhood. He and his wife, both Savannah natives, recently celebrated their golden anniversary, and as empty-nesters, their return to the heart of the city enables an active lifestyle. She’s an avid walker, and he gets around town on his bike, explains Amber Marie Then of Amber Marie Interiors, who helped the couple outfit their home. “When presented with the opportunity to have a new build in historic Savannah, they knew it was time to design their final, forever home.”

With interior and exterior architecture by Homeline Architecture, that home is one for the ages, replete with exquisite tilework and moldings, leaded glass doors and gas lamps. “The couple collaborated with local craftsmen and fabricators, and a European style informed their overall design sensibility,” says Then. Upon entering the home, visitors are welcomed into a stylish parlor where two blue velvet settees face each other in front of a white limestone fireplace, fostering

comfort and conversation. In the corner by the full-height window sits an antique secretary where the homeowner takes advantage of the natural light to indulge in the lost art of letter writing. This open space easily transitions into the formal dining room, which holds the couple’s traditional cherry dining room set that spaciously seats eight. “The space exudes a formal elegance, but easily adapts to accommodate casual gatherings,” says Then.

The 4,000-square-foot home’s cozy kitchen is designed for intimate gatherings, replete with an adjacent keeping room where guests can convene on the loveseat and keep their hosts company at the same time. The high-end modern appliances and custom cabinetry meld effortlessly with the keeping room, as natural light from one of the home’s four terraces is framed by Roman shades in both spaces. At kitchen center is a white marble-topped island with an inset sink

and comfy seating upholstered with fabric that matches the wallpaper. A butler’s pantry, framed by walnut pocket doors, serves as the transition from the kitchen to the formal dining room. A full-height marble backsplash and hammered nickel sink complement the pantry’s counter, creating the perfect place to mix cocktails to carry to the adjacent parlor or assemble dinner plates for the dining room. Homeline Architecture's alterations to the original plans offered by the developer were extensive on the home's third floor in particular. Rather than have several small spaces, including a closet and an office, the homeowners decided to dedicate the entire floor to the master bedroom, bathroom and boudoir. The boudoir, almost as big as the master bedroom itself, features custom cabinetry, mirrored doors, bench seats for comfort and functionality, a brass ladder rail with walnut ladder and sheer sashes on on the French doors. CafÊ shutters create privacy while allowing light to flood the room.

“This space naturally evolved, as the client and I were on the same page from the beginning of the design, resulting in the space you see today,” Then says. “This room works hard!” The yin to the boudoir’s yang is the garden-level media room, a place to relax with a cocktail and catch a game on the house’s only television. The stained alder cabinetry, bar with a beveled mirror backsplash, the felted wool and sisal woven rug and sectional sofa make the room fun and functional, a place where comfort reigns supreme. Amid all of the masculine touches in the media room, there

is one nod to femininity: a special nook where the wife can practice songs she's learning for her church choir on her grandmother's piano. Throughout the East Macon home, the tilework is a particular point of pride for Then, who grew up in the floor covering industry. In the master shower, Then used a stock marble trim to create a base cap and picture rail and worked with the general contractor and tile installer to carry the marble across the ceiling and through the door jamb. For the second bedroom’s bathroom, Then said the homeowners fell in love with one of her all-time favorite tiles from Garden State Tile, a ceramic tile with a

feminine, floral motif that blends gray and taupe in a manner reminiscent of hand-drawn sketches. “I wanted to create a focal point with the tile much like a piece of hanging art,” she says. “We paid careful attention to flawlessly integrate the beveled subway tile to the picture rail and create the tub surround.” Because the homeowners planned ahead, they worked with Then to incorporate amenities that would allow them to “age in place” — or, as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put it, “live in one’s own home and community safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level.” Even though the couple remains active, healthy and vital, they

installed an elevator that runs to all four floors, something that may seem convenient now but could become necessary later. With hand-painted hemp mural panels and base and crown molding, the elevator extends beyond the purely utilitarian into a work of art. Furthermore, the en suite shower in the master bath sports a curbless entry for easy wheelchair access, if necessary. Shower doors are wider than standard, and a bench and handheld shower attachment allow the user to sit and bathe without relying on assistance. Even the finishes were well-considered: instead of knobs on the kitchen cabinets, Then employed pulls, which are easier for someone with arthritis to grasp. “No one likes to think about this,

SPRING 2 019

but it’s something even younger people should consider,” advises Then. It was equally important to the homeowners to use as many as possible pieces from their prior home in their new one, especially those with sentimental value. In addition to the piano and secretary, the parlor’s coffee table was repurposed once it was repaired (after having been broken by their children years before). And several rugs the couple purchased over the years from Savannah staple Culver’s were used throughout the house as well. “It’s important for people to know you don’t have to start fresh. When you buy quality, you can keep it forever,” Then notes. “Find a way to incorporate it, to update it, give it a facelift and keep the sentimental value.” It’s also important to remember, says Then, that no matter how beautiful a house, it’s a home, which makes her business personal. “As a design firm, we like to start at beginning and go all the way to the end to achieve the homeowner’s goal. If we can get in as early as possible, we can help tweak things before construction,” she explains. “The majority of our business is blueprints to drapes on windows, everything from design concept to putting dishes in cabinets. We’re with clients for two plus years, so they become family.” Elevator

When 89 year-old Savannah Square resident Dorothy Madsen moved to the Hostess City from Dubuque, Iowa this past December, she was understandably a bit apprehensive. “I had never been to Georgia, so I didn’t know what to expect. However, when my son moved here from Connecticut after he retired from his job, he didn’t want me to spend my winters in Iowa, so we began looking for a place here for me to live.”
