EDITOR’S LETTER

MY MATERNITY LEAVE ENDED the week after quarantine began, which means I’ve been at home for quite awhile. Though I haven’t exactly been bored — a new baby comes with a steep learning curve — I’ve had more time than ever to contemplate the rooms around me, and these days, how they look matters less than how they function. It’s a good thing my husband and I overhauled our kitchen before our son was born: that room has seen more action in the past few months than I ever thought it would, and thus far it’s held up to the task. Depending upon the day, sheltering in place can reveal a home’s weak spots (our formal dining room-turned-office lost its luster around week three) or uncover its magic moments. Who knew the mid-morning light turns my upstairs hall into a solarium? I do, now. For our summer HOMES issue, we’re bringing you a slew of happy spaces to keep your head up. Wherever you’re staying put, I wish you health and peace as we hope for better days ahead. If you’re anything like me, you’ve still got a to-do list … it just might read a little differently than it used to. Sure, I’m ready to get out of the house, but I am so, so grateful for home.

MAKERS

Boho Chic FURNITURE DESIGNER FRANCIE LOWMAN grew up in Vidalia, Georgia, in a family of builders, engineers, and architects — so when she came to Savannah to study at SCAD, it’s no wonder she chose a three-dimensional design medium. “The home is such an intimate place,” Lowman says. “People put their heart and soul into getting it right, and they form such an attachment to their furniture.” After graduating in 2017, Lowman moved to Philadelphia to design furniture and lighting for Anthropologie, and last year circled back to Savannah to take part in SCAD’s Alumni Atelier studio residency program. Aiming to create objects that help people enjoy their spaces more (and to do her work with a level of creative freedom that’s difficult to sustain inside the framework of a larger corporation), Lowman emerged from the residency with a new capsule collection that launched in late May: Mangata, a Swedish term roughly meaning “moonlight on the water.” Mangata is first and foremost an ethical brand, incorporating

locally sourced sustainable lumber, imported fair-trade materials, organic cotton, hemp and silk, natural dyes, low-fire ceramics, and solid brass as opposed to plated metal. And yet for all the collection’s moral high points, Lowman was unwilling to compromise on looks or livability. “I try to design for the whole room,” she says, noting that Mangata’s initial four pieces (a chair, a coffee table and two lighting fixtures) will be followed up with small home goods — textured prints, candles, ceramic mirrors, and wall hangings. Though Lowman’s immediate travel plans are grounded amid coronavirus shutdowns, her work remains inspired by global points of reference, from Japanese joinery to South American and Moroccan textiles. On a recent trip to Tulum, she fell in love with the neutral palette. “I’m secretly a maximalist, but the way I can introduce a lot of elements is to keep the colors calm,” she says. “Metalworking and woodworking are perceived as a masculine craft, but I try to bring a fresh, feminine eye to them.” themangataexperience .com, @mangataexperience   —EMILY TESTA LEMASTER

SPOTLIGHT

She Builds She-Sheds by the Seashore Jane Coslick on building her clients a room of their own Photography by  BEAU KESTER

28

SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM

I WAS BORN IN SAVANNAH, and I have been creating simple little getaways (or “she-sheds”, as they’ve come to be called) for myself and many of my clients since the early 1990s. As a child I shared a bedroom with my older sister, so I value my space more than most, and when you design cottages, space is always at a premium. I moved to Tybee in 1992 from Isle of Hope, where I had been involved in restoration and preservation work. Right away I began saving Tybee cottages from demolition, and to date I’ve restored 89 structures on the island OPPOSITE PAGE AND ABOVE: Holley Jaakkola unified a warren of rooms and added salvaged church windows to a 50-year-old structure adjacent to her home on Isle of Hope, creating a oneof-a-kind she-shed for her flower and garden design business.

Jane Coslick’s personal she-shed on Tybee Island was originally designed as storage for bikes and kayaks — now, it’s a perfect place to plan her next cottage restoration projects.

for myself or my clients. Preservation is my passion, and trying to protect the essence of Tybee Island is my focus. Nowadays almost everyone loves a cottage. Many of the older homes on Tybee and in Savannah have existing small outbuildings, and if they’re in a nice location with a pleasant view, I recommend transforming them into fun escapes that complement the home and property. Adding a small shed expands useful living space, and they can be used in a multitude of ways: as yoga retreats, art studios, work stations, or just as a place to watch the world go by. I love a tin roof and white walls, and I often add old window sashes and a small pair of French doors, or a custom door with colorful cutouts, to make she-sheds more open and inviting. I always try to include a special chandelier and great fabrics for that touch of magic, and landscaping and a tiny porch are the final flourishes. At this unusual moment, when we’re spending so much time at home, the she-shed can make the “in this together” element feel not quite so crowded.

30

SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM

Inspired by Pinterest and passion for collecting, Judy Miller designed her she-shed to fit an 1880 Eastlake door with the original hardware and glass, and installed a vintage double-drain porcelain sink for easy potting.

Hit the Deck

Two experts share their tips for building your dream outdoor space DECKING IS LIKE ICING ON THE CAKE, and with new construction projects it’s usually the last thing that happens. People like to be outside doing things in their yard. It’s really an extension of the house. A screened porch means six to eight months of use instead of three or four, but I recently had some clients from Canada, and they use their deck all year. One thing we’ve seen recently is an increased use of engineered decking materials. Money spent on material is always a good investment — more money up front, but less in the long run. When we’re updating a deck, there can be some hidden costs in getting everything up to code depending on what we find. The main thing is to hire a good licensed contractor who knows the code and can guide you through the process. — TOM HARPER, HARPER CONSTRUCTION

32

SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM

IN SAVANNAH, our temperatures change dramatically, but if you situate a deck to catch the breeze in the summer and add some heating elements for the winter, you can maximize your time outside. This particular deck was on a second level, and we cantilevered floor joists in every direction to add 400 square feet more space overlooking Wassaw Sound. I’m a fan of blind fasteners rather than hardware you can see, for aesthetic reasons but also function — exposed connection points can pick up quite a bit of wear-and-tear over time. I always tell my clients that if they choose the right products from the get-go, there’s a huge return on investment, and it can lend a maintenance-free aspect to outdoor living. — BRUCE GREENE, BRUCE GREENE CONSTRUCTION CO.

THE RITCHIE FAMILY has three children and loves to entertain, especially when the weather is nice and people can hang out by the pool. This cabana bathroom, with its vintage-inspired double sink and separate changing area and shower, is the perfect setup for pool parties. Since it’s only accessible from the pool deck, the separation provided an opportunity to design a space that felt completely different from the rest of the home's interiors. My client wasn’t afraid to use pattern and color, and when she saw a sample of this Thibaut wallpaper, she fell in love immediately. To complement the whimsical jellyfish, I chose nautical elements, like the porthole-inspired mirror and rustic, wood-look tile, to tie everything together.”

Linen + Line designer Allison Willis on why children’s rooms are a great place to play THE BEST PART OF DESIGNING KIDS’ ROOMS IS: I have a more

open canvas. I love being able to exercise my love of color and patterns! FIVE COOL-KID COLORS THAT WON’T DRIVE PARENTS CRAZY:

light blue, light pink, light green, and simple black-and-white. SOME EXAMPLES OF KID-FRIENDLY DÉCOR THAT CAN GROW WITH THE FAMILY: woven materials, such as

laundry baskets or wall baskets are staples for my designs. I also love using fun lighting all over the house, so starting fixtures out in a child’s room and relocating them later is an easy sell for me.

ONE OF MY KIDS’ ROOM SIGNATURES IS: custom upholstery and

A young family breathes new life into a one-of-a-kind Tybee Island gem

AFTER NEARLY A DECADE spent living in Atlanta and Florida, Brent and Rebecca Watts moved back to their native Savannah in 2015 to start a family — and a business. As Brent’s specialty finance firm, Cabretta Capital, gained steam helping developers take on historic buildings with an eye toward preservation and stewardship, he and Rebecca began to develop projects of their own throughout Starland, Thomas Square and the Victorian District. Five years, three kids and a dozen properties later, they headed to the beach. More specifically, they headed to Tybee Island’s Fort Screven, where they set about revitalizing the fort's 110-year-old former enlisted men’s barracks as a family retreat and vacation rental. At 10,000 square feet and in major disrepair when they bought

it, the Barracks is easily their most major undertaking to date, and yet the Watts were undeterred. “We grew up spending a lot of time on Tybee, and we were actually there for a family vacation when we found out about the property,” Rebecca says. Lackluster past vacation rental experiences became a point of consideration as they reconfigured the space, and every decision, from the gourmet kitchen to the hard-wearing surfaces, was made in mind of the Watts’ vow to keep things “light, bright and durable.” The couple worked with Ward Architecture + Preservation to ensure they passed all the necessary checkpoints, a reminder that projects like these — which require developers to keep as many original materials as possible and replace those beyond salvage in kind — are not for the faint of heart. Still, for Brent and Rebecca, the appreciable difference is worth the effort. “When you walk into a place that’s been done like this, you notice the materials in their true form,” Brent says. “The trim, the floors, the window pulley systems and door hardware … everything feels solid and substantial.” Substance also begets style: Rebecca worked with her sisterin-law, Betsy Ormond, to cozy up the building’s historical bones with clean, coastal interiors, and a new swimming pool out back is a tasteful concession to modern family life. All in all, the Barracks is a testament to the fact that a building preserved tells so many stories — not only about how it looks, but about how it lives and what it stands for. rpropmgt.com

CUSTOM CABINETS BY WILLIAMSON MILLWORKS I love working in Savannah because ... we have such a diverse population! No two clients are the same, and no two projects are alike. I’ve learned from experience that … every client has ideas. Some clients can verbalize what their ideal space will need to function perfectly and have the design aesthetic they desire. Other clients are more visual and can tell you what they like when they see it, but have a hard time explaining it to you in their own words. Asking the right questions upfront is critical to the design process. How does the client use their space? What do they like and dislike about their current space they are hoping to improve?

My clients love that I am ... honest. Custom cabinets may not always be the best solution. Use of space and budget constraints can sometimes guide us to a manufactured cabinet in place of custom. We are fortunate in that we offer both custom and manufactured cabinetry at Custom Cabinets. I’m proud of … our organization’s commitment to community involvement. Our leader, Chris Williamson, raised $48,000 for local breast cancer patient services and education programs in the 2019 Susan G Komen Big Wig fundraising campaign.

A cohesive palette of turquoise and raspberry lends island appeal.

LAURA PIERCE spent her childhood summers at the beach house on Hilton Head Island. The summer between second and fourth grade (she skipped third), Pierce sat on the shore while her mother quizzed her relentlessly on multiplication tables — the stuff of lasting memory. Her grandparents would fly over from England and spend a month there each year. When she was older, friends from boarding school would pile into the back of her parents’ car to make the 14-hour drive south from Pomfret, Connecticut, for spring break. Much of her youth was spent wading in the surf and searching for sand dollars. “Out of all the houses we’ve lived in,” Pierce says, “it’s the one that feels like I’m coming home when I go there.” Pierce and her parents, Helen and Colin Keeler, moved around a lot while she was growing up: Atlanta, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, Connecticut. Everywhere they moved, the Keelers either completely renovated or rebuilt a house. Pierce witnessed the entire process, from initial construction to her mother’s use of print and pattern in the finishing touches. She even got to decorate her own room, something she did “with great gusto and not always the best taste.” With all that experience, it’s no wonder she went on to receive her certificate in interior

design and later founded her interior design company, Keeler & Co. “I always had an interest and a knack for it,” she says. In 2012, the Keelers decided their beloved home needed a dramatic makeover. After the beach house was completely torn down and rebuilt, Pierce was able to put her skills to use somewhere close to her heart. “It’s really fun to work with your parents on a space,” Pierce says. “Because you know them so well, you’re able to push them in a direction that maybe you wouldn’t with your regular clients.” Inside the redesigned home, nuanced coastal references abound: flashes of raspberry pink in the pillow patterns are reminiscent of Hilton Head Island’s fiery sunsets. Turquoise-blue books are an interpretation of the calm ocean just beyond the trees, and the weathered wood of the coffee table invokes memories of a pier smoothed by the thousands of footsteps that have walked it, while a pair of woven chairs perches nearby like sun hats. In unexpected ways, the home brings its immediate surroundings indoors. Though Pierce set the creative direction for the interior design, there were a few nonnegotiables from her parents — those vivid swaths of magenta curtains framing the windows, for instance. “My mom’s favorite color is pink. It just wasn’t an option not to

include pink in the design.” Her father’s request was a little more practical. “One of the things my dad loved in the old design were these swivel chairs that had basically fallen apart from use. I had to give him swivel chairs.” In the years since Pierce designed the space, her parents have moved to the Hilton Head Island residence full time. “Being a part of this process of creating a space that my parents are going to thrive in during their retirement is such a gift,” she says. “It’s truly come full circle.” For Pierce, knowing that the house has always been a constant in her life is reassuring. “When I was getting married, it was the only place on the list. I knew that I wanted to get married on the beach in front of the house.” Friends from boarding school still tell stories from those spring break trips. A portrait of her grandparents hangs in the entryway. “It’s amazing how many people this house has touched,” she says — and new memories continue to be made at her parents’ famous dinner parties, where conversation lingers over candlelight well into the night. With Pierce’s heartfelt design apparent in every inch of the home, one can’t help but feel the love.

Reclaimed beams delineate an otherwise open floor plan downstairs.

AS A FLORIDA NATIVE, I’m practically fluent in the language of beach-house witticisms, typically emblazoned in folksy script upon whitewashed wood: “Life is better at the beach”; “Take only pictures, leave only footprints”; “Sky above, sand below, peace within.” It’s decor that literally makes a statement, and for me, such signs also conjure up fond childhood memories. But there’s no need to spell out any guiding maxims when flawless design can embody them outright. Such is the case at this sophisticated Tybee beach house, dreamed up by Rethink Design Studio. “We were designing for a beach home, but I use the word ‘beach’ with a bit of hesitancy, because when you use that word, it can start going toward a theme,” says Rethink co-founder and designer Joel Snayd. “You might feel the need to bring in objects and colors that represent the beach in a very literal way, but we wanted to do it in an emotional way. We didn’t want anything that would be cliché.” Snayd achieved a relaxed, refined look for the space by taking cues from historic properties on Tybee — not 1950s or ’60s builds, but “homes from the early part of the 20th century, during the 1910s and ’20s,” he says. Of course, establishing vintage-inspired charm in a new build (the three-bedroom, three bathroom home was completed in 2017) is easier said than done. Rethink used materials like reclaimed beams to delineate space in the open-concept floor plan while also adding patina. Texture, from shiplap walls to hardwood floors, also played an important role, creating warmth and conveying visual interest

through era-appropriate materials. Snayd acknowledges the influence of California design, too: clean, white walls throughout the home’s downstairs add a modern West Coast touch. Though the overall effect is undeniably sophisticated, it wasn’t necessarily expensive, Snayd says. Take the wall treatment in the guest rooms, which mimics board and batten siding, a popular exterior treatment for Lowcountry homes (it’s weathertight and can resist harsh winds). “One trick of the eye was, how do we create interest in such small rooms? Some of these old beach houses were really stripped back and built out of wood framing, so we brought in a simple, easy application of 1x2 vertical boards

to recreate the board and batten look,” he says. “Spaces meant for guests can sometimes fall flat, and I always try to push against that. It doesn’t have to be pricey, but it needs to have something.” Hence the woven sisal runner Snayd added on the interior stairs heading up to the guest rooms. “It’s a very inexpensive means of getting some texture onto a hard surface, and it creates a defining moment for the staircase,” Snayd says. The runner also “picks the sand off,” he says, laughing. Functional design is on display in almost every room: note the sliding barn door in the kitchen, which shields a supply closet and creates a visual resting spot for the eye. In the master bedroom, a custom built-in is part headboard, part bookshelf. To further maximize square footage in the master, Rethink used space from the attic, cutting into the walls to the exact dimensions of a purchased console — the result looks completely custom, but it isn’t. The home’s small bedrooms are “meant to sleep, not hang,” Snayd says. “We took that to heart and made the public spaces even more inviting, to draw you out into them.” To wit, in the downstairs living space, guests can sprawl across an oversized sectional studded with pretty, seagreen pillows, or slide into the custom banquette in the dining area. They can also sneak away for a moment of tranquility: a partitioned sunroom just off the living room creates a noise-dampening effect, facilitating peace and panoramic views from the comfort of two upholstered chaise lounges. For Snayd, the home’s virtue lies in its tranquility. “The palette, the textures, the floors, the beams — they add strength and character in the home, and create a grounding effect. Metaphorically speaking, it’s a space where you feel very anchored and secure,” he says. “But I’m not going to put an anchor on the wall.”

THE OLD SAYING that good fences make good neighbors just isn’t true in the Hostess City, where Southern hospitality means more than just lip service. This was certainly the case for Jeff and Cindy Holker, whose across-the-street neighbor, architect Joye Reno, oversaw a full renovation of their Richmond Hill vacation home. The Holkers selected Reno for her prowess rather than her proximity, but given that the recent Savannah transplants remained in their home state of Minnesota until the project was complete, Reno’s locale was fortuitous. “I could just walk across the street and check on things,” she says. “I was happy to offer that peace of mind for them.” Such neighborly warmth is part of what drew the Holkers to the Savannah area in the first place. “Friends in Minneapolis looked at us like we were crazy. They said, ‘why don’t you go to Phoenix where it’s 85 degrees every day?’ But Savannah brings good food, good culture, it’s on the water,

and the people are great,” Jeff Holker says, noting that his wife’s interest in Civil War history and his love for golf and tennis made for an exceptionally good fit. While the Holkers dreamed of a vacation home for several years, things fell into place quickly when they toured a three bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom cottage in The Ford Plantation in 2017. It was the second house they looked at, and it had potential in spades: a wide front porch and workable floor plan, an enviable lot backing up onto a public garden, and moss-draped oaks on view from every window. “It’s the sweetest little house,” Reno says, but the homeowners felt (and she agrees) that the interiors “were just kind of blah.” Reno and interior designer Linda Engler, who has worked with the Holkers on previous projects, spent seven months remodeling the home, infusing a coastal aesthetic and amplifying its secret garden-like charm while also honoring the Holkers’ modern tastes. “The shiplap is a great

example, because it has a very precise delineation,” Reno says. “If you look at historic shiplap, it kind of weaves and changes, but instead we made it modern, with clean, sharp lines, and we used it both horizontally and vertically.” A palette of ecru and soft turquoise with the occasional jolt of orange is another sleek choice, though both Holker and Reno note the use of pink in the potting shed out back. “It’s my favorite color,” Holker says with a laugh, “and as a surprise, Joye painted the inside bright pink.” As Reno wryly explains: “That’s because nobody sees it but his pots and gardening tools!” In the kitchen, a zinc hood represents the creative input of several parties, including local artisans. Holker knew he wanted a custom hood, and Reno encouraged him to draw out some sketches. Forsyth Metal Works brought it to life, polishing and aging the piece to precise specifications. “The hood is subtly matte, and it’s the beauty of the whole room because it balances out all of that teal tilework in the backsplash,” Reno says. fridge to accommodate the kitchen’s tricky layout; the built-in bench tucked into an alcove on the stairs (an enchanting spot to read); a custom table designed for jigsaw puzzles, one of Cindy’s favorite pastimes; and that darling potting shed, which doubles as a golf cart garage. But the best example is in the living room, where commissioned artwork affixed to sliding barn door hardware perfectly conceals the television. “Cindy said, ‘Do whatever you want, but we are never having a TV over our fireplace, ever,” Holker recalls. Her request has been easy enough to accommodate in past homes, but the layout of The Ford Plantation home presented a unique challenge. Reno suggested barn door equipment and put the Holkers in touch with artist Jessica Pisano to create a diptych of Lowcountry marshland, based partially on a photograph Holker took of Lake Clara, near Henry Ford’s house. It’s something “people always notice when they come in” — a seamless, beautiful solution that Holker never could’ve imagined without the help of his neighbor.

Family Tides An abandoned Tybee Island bungalow is lovingly restored Written by   JEN MARIE WIGGINS Photography by  ANGELA HOPPER LEE

SUMMER 2020

REAL HOMES

IT’S BEEN 23 YEARS since Elizabeth and Heath Shelton purchased their first dilapidated house on Bolton Street. Newly wed and new to the area, the couple had never imagined themselves with careers in historic restoration, but a sudden infatuation with century-old craftsmanship and the “stories that old homes tell” quickly developed into a family business. Two decades later, their company, EH Fortitude, has restored more than a hundred local residential and commercial properties, and still welcomes the challenge of working with old homes. “All of our houses become like people to us,” Elizabeth says. “The architecture shares its history, then it’s our job to restore that ‘feel’ to a space that will tell stories for centuries to come.” Among those many homes, it was one in particular — an abandoned Tybee bungalow — that spoke to them in such a way that they felt compelled to make it

part of their own family’s history. “It’s always been a dream of ours to find a place on Tybee where we could bring our children and their spouses, and eventually our grandchildren,” Heath says. Originally an old boarding home, the 1932 cottage was once part of an effort to attract visitors to the newly developed Coastal Resort section of Tybee. Swallowed by weeds and overgrown palms, the home near Tybrisa Street was barely discernible. Yet with only four prior owners, and an eight-year vacancy, it had managed to survive as one of the single most intact original structures on the island. Immediately, the Sheltons were smitten. “As is generally the case, the more destroyed and in need of care a house is, the more we love it and want to restore it,” Elizabeth says, laughing. “We both knew this was the one.” From their first visit, the home felt like a gathering place, and the couple worked to squeeze five bedrooms

and three bathrooms into the original 1,500-square-foot space while keeping the existing footprint, a standard they knew they’d need to qualify for a credit with the National Review and Board of Historic Homes. As the work progressed, they also felt what they characterized as a “feminine vibe” emerging from the cottage — it soon became part of the design inspiration. Christening the home “Big Mama’s House,” a nod to Elizabeth’s family nickname, they brought in hints of soft pink and used natural materials throughout. Touches like farmhouse sinks and black-and-white tile were a thoughtful choice — both for their beach practicality and clean aesthetic. Even the artwork became a family affair, with Heath taking all the photography. The result is a playful “ode to nature,” which feels right at home on Tybee Island The Sheltons were happy to find Big Mama’s House came with a healthy dose of yard, and they knew right

away they wanted to add a pool. With family in mind, Heath designed and built a rectangular lounging pool with a wide bench along one end, imagining his future grandbabies and family members splashing at its edge. To extend the outdoor entertaining space, an existing garage structure was converted into a retro bar area coined the “Shuggie Shack,” after their daughter’s nickname. They also added plenty of outside seating and an AstroTurf lawn ready for hosting guests at a moment’s notice. After a yearlong renovation the Sheltons have happily ensconced themselves in their coastal family retreat, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The care it took to restore it according to the standards of the Secretary of the Interior even won them a Historic Preservation Award from the Historic Savannah Foundation in 2019. Yet, for the Sheltons, the real reward is the refuge they’ve created. “It was our dream to make this place the center of our family, and I think we’ve achieved just that,” Elizabeth says. Like its maternal namesake suggests, the house is a place where everyone finds guidance, and where everyone wants to return.
