Not every room needs an overhaul. This corner of my 1930 home is completely original, down to the built-ins and telephone nook.
IN HIS 1878 MASTERPIECE, Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy wrote, “Spring is the time of plans and projects.” He has it half right. Plans? Well, we know better by now than to count on those after the upheaval and uncertainty of the past year. But projects, yes. So many projects. With travel largely on hold and an abundance of time at home, many of us are carrying out renovations that make the household look fresher and run more seamlessly. We’ve had months on end to identify our homes’ weak spots, and now, with springtime’s enduring themes of renewal and rejuvenation, it’s high time to shore them up. Turning design dreams into reality, though, takes a balance of inspiration and expert assistance. This HOMES issue delivers on both. First up, the inspiration: For lovers of modern design, there’s the stunning, Palmetto Bluff residence conceived by Court Atkins Group on page 72, tempering clean, luxurious lines with the warmth of
walnut wood (in an of-the-moment twist, the homeowners watched it all come together remotely, from their primary residence in Moscow). Crave something more traditional? WHEN THE GREAT RECESSION HIT IN 2008, many people had to get creative in a figurative sense. Becky Brackett’s approach was more literal. As owner of The Light Post, Brackett noticed her clients — designers, builders and laymen alike — were looking for custom lighting choices that simply weren’t available. She stepped up and designed her own pieces, and they were an instant hit. What started with a few oyster shell fixtures eventually grew into Lowcountry Originals, a handcrafted, artisan lighting company that bridges organic and elegant design sensibilities. When searching for design inspiration for her collections, Brackett doesn’t have to look far, as the company’s name suggests. “The picturesque Lowcountry landscape is certainly part of our brand,” Brackett says, noting the appeal of marsh grass, shells, palms and other natural shapes. “We built upon that story with every collection and have found that there is so much more to tell.” Over the years, Lowcountry Originals’ popularity has expanded nationwide, inspiring the team to create different aesthetics and offer more options. Some of the variety of styles include rustic high country,

urban modern and colonial heritage, but it all starts with a basic sketch. From there, Brackett meets with local artisans to review the design and materials, and they begin crafting prototypes. Final touches, like finishes, bobeches, candle covers and accents, follow. “Every lighting piece is treated like a custom order,” Brackett says. “No two fixtures are alike.” Something else that separates them from mass-produced lighting companies is their inclusion of bedswings (Brackett believes they’re the quintessential Southern luxury). “I carried around a magazine cutout of a twin bed swing on a beautiful Lowcountry porch for years,” Brackett recalls. Eventually, she created her own with pretty, customizable options like copper accents. Brackett’s latest collection, which launched in January at AmericasMart Atlanta (one of the largest wholesale trade centers in the world), includes an assortment of timeless pieces with simple lines and organic forms, one of her favorites being the Majestic Palm Lantern — it’s the flagship piece for the 2021 collection and boasts dramatic, hand-forged steel palm leaves. But even while selling to designers, builders and architects all over the country, Brackett never forgets where it all started.

IN DISREPAIR AFTER YEARS OF NEGLECT, Monica and Garth Vernon’s new home, a charming Victorian they affectionately refer to as “the Lady,” needed more than a facelift. Eager to honor her good bones while maximizing functionality, architect Christian Sottile meticulously restored the Lady’s floor plan and incorporated a luxurious, new master ensuite, while Florida-based designer Christine Bartke allowed the home herself to guide each design decision. The result is a modern Victorian masterpiece. Sottile carved out the light-flooded master bathroom by enclosing the home’s second-story porch. An elegant riot of color and pattern — the Lady demanded it — the room features a contemporary Chinoiserie wallpaper by MissoniHome and a custom, orchidhued vanity designed by Al Harry Furniture in Bluffton. A muted yellow hue, Dirty Martini by Sherwin Williams, adorns the ceiling, cheerily peeking through the bathroom’s transom window into the master bedroom, offering a glimpse of the glamour beyond. Calacatta marble covers the floor in a tight, herringbone pattern and slinks up the wall, capped by a coordinating marble chair rail. A polished Vitrite soaking tub, shipped all the way from England to accommodate the room’s narrow footprint, and elegant antiquestyle hardware happily reflect light from the bathroom’s bank of windows. To top it all off, the homeowners scoured local shops for the perfect accessories: a fauteuil armchair from Jere’s Antiques, painted and reupholstered at the behest of local designer Lily Brown, light fixtures from Circa Lighting and a glass lamp from Seventh Heaven Antiques. EQUAL PARTS PREP SPACE, dinner table, storage solution and even the occasional work-from-home desk (where coffee and snacks are always within reach), a kitchen island is a supremely practical addition to the busiest room in the house. During a time when we need our homes to work harder than ever, adding a kitchen island is a worthy investment. And, while

details like cabinets, paint choice and accessories all matter, really, it’s all about the slab. “First, consider the scale of the overall space,” says Anne Pappas, owner of Anne Pappas Interiors. The ideal slab gives a 3.5- to 4-foot clearance from any other countertop spaces, allowing for optimal flow. “You’ll want to make sure you have
enough room to open an oven or a dishwasher door, but not so much room that a space feels overwhelming.” For a large island that requires multiple slabs, lay them out consecutively, so that the veining matches up at the seams, she says. Your home’s occupants will likely influence your dream island, too, says Liezel Fourie, sales manager at MultiStone

Custom Stone Countertops. For young families, a costly, high-maintenance stone like Carrara marble — though exceptionally beautiful and luxurious — is probably out. “Engineered quartz is perfect for households with active little ones,” Fourie says, noting that it’s non-porous (and thus ultra hygienic), easy to clean and resistant to heat and scratches. “No need to worry about drink spills or messy eaters,” she says. “It’s a no-brainer.” There’s still room for natural stone, however, even if young kids are in the picture, says Pappas, who suggests selecting a hardier option like granite or quartzite. “I think it’s OK for countertops to have natural wear over time,” she adds. “There’s a real beauty to that.” No kids? Go for broke with Calacatta Gold marble, quarried in the Apuan Mountains near Carrara, Italy. “It has a creamy white background with beautiful gold veins,” Pappas says. “The undertones are both gray and warm, so it’s easy to build a palette around.” Regardless of which stone you choose, you’ll want to select a slab with a smooth, even surface. Pits and fissures may be visible, particularly with natural stone, but a slab with a rough feel can indicate a lower-quality material, Pappas says. Finally, consider how a particular slab harmonizes with other elements in the kitchen, like cabinets, countertops, backsplashes and wall color, says Fourie, who suggests building layers of color and texture by alternating tones within the same color scheme.
Make sure that the veining and pattern of the kitchen island slab relates to the scale of the space, says Liezel Fourie of MultiStone Custom Stone Countertops. “A bold vein may not look right on a smaller surface.”

WHEN IT COMES to coastal design philosophies, it’s easy to box it into rattan-filled spaces with weathered wooden touches for just about any home located along the Atlantic Coast from Florida to North Carolina. But when architect Reshma Shah Johnson and interior designer Christina Scharf of SHAH Architecture + Interiors met with their new clients in Savannah Quarters, their notions of what a coastal home was

really made of were challenged. “A lot of the imagery that the client was showing us was something very different than what we normally see,” Scharf says. “It was traditional but glamorous.” But Scharf and Johnson also acknowledged the fine line between glam and gaudiness. “You can take glitz too far,” Scharf says. The goal, she says, was to deliver refined glamour that embodied the
clients’ sophisticated tastes. And the pair’s success in doing so is evident from the home’s threshold. A luxurious foyer sets the tone, from the marble-tiled flooring to the imperial staircase that opens into the main living space. There’s a bit of fun, too, via geometric patterns echoed throughout the house in the golden chandeliers, patterned curtains and even the furniture placed in clusters, contrasting the open floor plan. Because of the client’s large family and love of entertaining, this setup was a necessity. “You can’t really have a conversation with a person who’s sitting 20 feet away from you, so it’s important to tighten up seating groups,” says Johnson, who founded SHAH Architecture + Interiors. “Even though you’re in this big space, much like a hotel, you’re still in an intimate setting,” she says of the home’s clustered seating arrangements. Although there is often a convergence of patterns, especially in the bathroom with its golden faucets, geometric backsplash and touches of greenery and marble, there is a literal silver lining in the predominantly gray color scheme that ties it all together. “I think it’s a very relatable color,” Johnson says. “It goes with everything, especially when you’re trying to marry lots of different textures.” Indeed, the muted palette creates a seamless flow from room to room. room. Scharf and Johnson remember when the house was blessed, and 150 of the clients’ closest family and friends gathered in the home in their Saris and traditional garb. Shah and Scharf were struck by how, despite all its glamour, the dazzling home didn’t take away from the guests mingling inside. “This home is just an amazing, glamorous backdrop that allows the people of the house to be the focal point, as they should be,” Johnson says. Scharf concurs: “The people and the family are the art.”

COME NOVEMBER, it’s not uncommon to see flocks of Canadian geese unraveling across the cold, bright sky. The birds overwinter in the South, exchanging sparse, Northern climates for mild, balmy ones. Many choose to take up residency in Savannah, while others stop just short in Bluffton, South Carolina. Some days, Rick and Leslie Goryeb can hear them honking along the May River from the porches of their Palmetto Bluff home. Much like the geese, the Goryebs choose to skip out on Northern winters. “We’ve always been fond of the South,” says Leslie, a New Jersey native. “We had a house in Ocean Isle, North Carolina, for many years when our four boys were little. But once school starts and life takes over, you can’t get down there as much.” When their youngest went to college, the Goryebs knew it was time to build another home. The pair downsized their New Jersey residence and researched the ideal locale for a their Southern escape. Palmetto Bluff was the first stop, and when the Goryebs came to visit it was love at first sight. “I think it was a combination of the live oak trees and the architecture,” Rick says. “It was like going back in time,” Leslie adds, “like somebody had hit the pause button.” Drawing on postcard-perfect imaginings of a Southern home, the Goryebs wanted a space that felt sophisticated yet comfortable. The surrounding nature served as inspiration for the earthy color palette and organic accents, such as the exposed wooden beams

on the living room ceiling. “We tied in a lot of wood to keep it grounded,” Leslie says. “It serves as a common thread throughout the entire house.” That same wood also decorates the stove hood, wet bar and fireplace mantle. Another commonality is the home’s penchant for sweeping views. As self-proclaimed “porch people,” the Goryebs were keen to maximize the sights of the surrounding landscape. With both upper and lower screened-in porches — and even an outdoor dining porch, complete with a dining table and grill — the Goryebs extended the porches as far as they could to take full advantage of the views of the adjacent park and May River. “It’s my favorite place to hang out,” Rick says. “There’s nothing else like it.” Although the porches are Leslie’s favorite spot, too, the breakfast nook (her breakfast nook), is a close second. “I had this vision in my head that I absolutely had to have,” she says. “I wanted it to feel like an add-on that would be in an older house.”

The nook features a round breakfast table tucked against a large, L-shaped couch, framed by six expansive windows. “It feels like its own little world — one that’s bright and light and made just for me.” In the master bathroom, a soaking tub serves as a focal point for the room, but the placement of mirrors might also catch one’s eye. The room’s double vanities are situated to the side, right in front of a set of windows. “For the life of me,” Rick says, “I couldn’t imagine how they were going to put mirrors over the windows. But they figured it out.” Beyond the mirrors, the windows look out over live oaks and palm trees. “I love being able to take in that sight first thing in the morning,” he says. Upon completion of the house in 2018, the Goryebs hosted a party for everyone who had a hand in building their dream home. From the architects (Pearce Scott Architects) to the landscapers (Witmer Jones Keefer), the crew stopped by to experience the

fruits of their labor. “We wanted them to really enjoy the space they’d worked so hard creating, and to feel what it feels like to be a home and not a job site,” Leslie says. Rick recalls that about 10 people piled into the breakfast nook that evening, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder. Guests remarked on how comfortable the space felt, Leslie adds. The party — ultimately, the celebration of turning a house into a home — wore on well into the night.

IT’S SAFE TO SAY Court Atkins Group is comfortable pushing the envelope. About two years before the coronavirus pandemic turned working remotely into old hat, the ambitious, Blufftonbased team, led by principal architect William Court and director of interiors Deb Van Plew was putting the finishing touches on a luxurious, 8,500-square-foot house for a family halfway around the world. Based in Moscow, Russia, the homeowners placed their trust in Court and Van Plew, requesting only a modern interior infused with touches of green (the wife’s favorite color), no orange and plenty of space for their children to play. The rest was up to the designers. The result, a stunning home complete with a two-story porch punctuated by sets of mahogany French doors, carriage house and trellis pavilion, offers a fresh take on Lowcountry vernacular. Inside, the home is an ultra-modern masterpiece brimming with upscale finishes. Beginning with a smooth, Venetian plaster fireplace and ending with wide swaths of French oak flooring, the interior’s strong materiality unifies the grand home and prevents it from feeling like a sterile box of “vast whiteness,” Van Plew says. As if to prove the designer’s point, just inside the front door, a grand staircase wraps around the elevator tower, clad in

SAVANNAH MAGAZINE: We’re in a pandemic, but the real estate market seems hotter than ever. What gives? STACI DONEGAN: Our local real estate market is booming due to a combination of factors, including record-low interest rates and an influx of professionals and families moving to smaller cities that offer exceptional quality of life. We’re seeing people relocate from New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles — they’re all drawn to Savannah’s natural beauty, rich history and incredible housing options. SM: What are the signs of a seller’s market? LIZA DIMARCO: A buyer will recognize a seller’s market when inventory is low, pricing is a bit higher than expected and properties sell quickly, often with multiple offers, bids above asking price and few to no contingencies or seller’s concessions. It’s what we’re seeing for Savannah right now.
SM: Are there any certain property
characteristics buyers are clamoring for? LD: The pandemic has given buyers time to think about what their needs are, and many people who are working from home have come to the simple conclusion that they need more space. As such, and in the Historic District in particular, buyers are after homes with carriage houses or garages, outdoor spaces and office space. SM: Amid ample competition, how can buyers succeed in finding a home? SD: Go into the process knowing what’s important to you. In a seller’s market with multiple bids, it’s important to look at the process objectively and not get caught up emotionally — working with a real estate agent helps. You’ll also want to have your financials buttoned up before you make an offer. That means having proof of funds ready if you’re a cash buyer, or getting a prequalification letter if you’re securing a mortgage.
