editor’s letter
WE DO, TOO It’s an exciting time at Savannah Weddings magazine. You might say there’s a lot going on behind the veil. The Supreme Court declared marriage a human right, the magazine is launching a beautiful new responsive website on October 1, and two of our staffers are joining the glamorous ranks of Savannah brides. Cassandra Anderson, our heroic, Savannah-native advertising assistant, is tying the knot this fall with the big-hearted Sheldon Wilson, a longshoreman and former engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It’s hard to imagine a woman more deserving of happiness.
Everything’s different. The swirl of emotions is almost laughable, from my mini-breakdown in the office about wanting to be a “beautiful bride” to my Type A wedding notebook listing priorities, potential guests and budgetary goals. And then there’s me. I came on board to help launch Savannah Weddings in 2008. I’ve been around in some capacity or another ever since, fueled by daydreams and a love of beautiful things. But I’ve never actually been a bride, until now. Everything’s different. The swirl of emotions is almost laughable, from my mini-breakdown in the office about wanting to be a “beautiful bride” to my Type A wedding notebook listing priorities, potential guests and budgetary goals. This, from a girl who coasts into the office with no makeup and insists that the landslide of papers on her desk is controlled chaos? The change is emotional, the joy and enthusiasm of a shared purpose. The details are gestures of the heart, trying to find expression in the material world. And what an expression it is! My own main squeeze, Omar Portigliatti, is a master jewelry designer at International Diamond Center, specializing in custom pieces. He’ll be the first to tell you that you can create an original design for the same budget as a ring everyone else has. There’s a lesson in that—one the two of us keep discussing. Why plan the expected when you and your love are unique? Lucky for you and me, Savannah is jam-packed with creativity, as the 10 real weddings and three styled inspiration shoots in this issue of Savannah Weddings will attest. The secret is to know what’s important to us as couples, and to honor that as truly, madly and deeply as we can. The experts, atmosphere and artistry are all here. Just add your sense of purpose and stir. Most of all, savor the moments; don’t get hung up on one perfect day. Your love—your life—will be a series of experiences, from the “will you,” and the “I do” to that dreadful dim sum and the time you both start laughing without knowing why. When Omar got down on one knee in the sand at Tybee Island, I plopped down beside him, assuming we were there to see the sunrise. And we were. But it sparkles a little brighter now. Kelli is a Savannah native and soughtafter wedding, portrait and lifestyle photographer who has been capturing moments and memories for more than a decade. Teresa specializes in wedding photography with a focus on fun. She has more than a decade of experience in portraiture and event photography and she is a frequent contributor to Savannah Weddings magazine. An outspoken Alabama fan, she loves traveling with her husband, Toby, and their two children, Emma and Mac. See more work at teresaearnest photography.com.
3. Andrea Goto
Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Andrea Goto has called Savannah home for 14 years, but it’s only recently that she’s begun to say “y’all” instead of “you guys” and “Coke” instead of “pop.” As a writing professor at SCAD, frequent contributor to Savannah magazine, and mother to a native-born child who insists she’s a “Bulldog,” Andrea can almost pass as Southern. hen we heard that Nicole Miller’s latest bridal collection was inspired by Southern style, we simply had to investigate. The queen of chic, simple sheaths is branching out with her Spring 2016 designs, stitching up fresh, romantic frocks with laced bodices and subtle sweetheart necklines. Our favorite? The Savannah gown, naturally. A flattering A-line of pure ivory silk hugs the natural waist and an illusion neckline of delicate rose-embroidered mesh adds a hint of old-school glamour. $2,200 at Ivory and Beau, 7302 Abercorn St. #1B, 912.200.4794, ivoryandbeau.com —Reilly Mesco

Try This: We might be biased, but we love it when a bride incorporates vintage items into her décor. We have had clients mix family heirlooms with our vintage pieces. This adds such a special and sentimental touch. Don’t Miss: Spring and fall are really popular wedding times here in Savannah, but don’t rule out the winter months. With our mild winter weather, the “colder months” can be great—and give you an excuse to use fun plaids, furs, and even festive props.

Let it Rain. Trust me: Rain on your wedding day is good luck in Savannah. I relate this to a nautical truism about tying the knot: When a ship is moored to the dock and the rope gets wet from rain, the knot gets stronger—so don’t be frazzled. Watch the Clock. Planning a receiving line after the ceremony? Consider this: If each guest takes one minute to congratulate you, and you have 100 guests, that’s 100 minutes. Unless you want to spend two extra hours in the sun or the church, greet guests at the reception instead.
Mind Your Step. Outdoor ceremony? Rethink that aisle runner. The fabric or plastic will wrinkle in the grass when your attendants walk on it, catching the heels of everyone who follows them. And that means you. Consider a path of flower petals instead. Picture This. Do your photographer a favor: Ask your guests ahead of time not to take pictures during the ceremony. Otherwise, your keepsakes will be full of smartphones, not faces. Sure, guests can snap one or two shots as you enter and leave, but once the ceremony starts, nobody moves.
Sweat Much? Savannah can be humid. Plan accordingly. Don’t let your groom bring a tissue for his perspiration. When he goes to wipe his face, the tissue will get caught in his beard or stubble and he won’t notice. Have him bring a pure cotton hanky—washed and dried to make it more absorbent. Sound Garden. You’ve got the sights down. What about the sounds? Go to your location, stand there for a few minutes, and listen. Hear that? Yes, you may want to consider a PA system for your outdoor ceremony. Ask the Rev. Even if you don’t hire me as your officiant, if your vendors don’t know who I am, consider different vendors. I’ve married more than 5,000 couples, including numerous celebrities. I’ve been on many TV shows and in nearly every issue of Savannah Weddings magazine, and I’m currently working on my own TV project. Also, feel free to ask me about your vendors’ reputations. If they’re not that good, I will say: “Who else have you considered?”

Tayla Farrington and David Lane Saturday, May 23, 2015 Ceremony: Isle of Hope Methodist Church Reception: Villa Marie Center Small Wonder: We wanted a small, intimate ceremony, so we kept the guest list short and chose to share the moment with the people most special in our lives. The only people in our wedding party were our children. We tried to make our wedding about us becoming a family. Here and Now: We used a book about Savannah as our guestbook, so guests could discover the amazing places in Savannah when they signed—and we could have a memento of this time and place.

Lindsey Dickson and Justin Jones Saturday, October 25, 2014 Ceremony and reception: Savannah Yacht Club Planner: Posh Petals and Pearls HOSTESS CITY CHARMS: From the oyster shells in our table centerpieces to the magnolia wreaths at the entrance, Posh Petals and Pearls and Harvey Designs truly made our vision come to life. NOW WE KNOW: The showers, parties, dress fittings and time spent with the wedding party leading up to your wedding are some of the most special, once-in-a-lifetime moments. Don’t get so caught up in the stress of planning that you miss the little moments along the way.

Jordan Fuqua and Brian Jaffee Saturday, November 1, 2014 Ceremony and reception: Bride’s family home Planner: Anne Bone Events So Southern: We wanted a classic, Southern low country wedding that showcased the natural beauty of this gorgeous part of the country. Emily McCarthy did all of our wedding paper and helped me weave a magnolia motif throughout, and the clear tent let the beautiful oak trees shine through. Great Taste: Susan Mason made so much delicious Southern food! Fried oysters, tomato sandwiches, Parmesan cheese rounds, crab cakes, beef tenderloin, lamb chops and my favorite part: a biscuit bar.

Stephanie Greenberg and Justin Martin Sunday, November 9, 2014 Ceremony: Forsyth Park Reception: Hilton Savannah DeSoto Planner: Anne Bone Events Double the Fun: We had two receptions at our wedding—one for all of our local friends, followed by a smaller affair for close friends and out-of town-family—so everyone could celebrate and we could still spend quality time with those closest to us. Worth the Splurge: The tent! It’s important to have a plan for inclement weather. We had a gorgeous seethrough tent during our cocktail reception that our guests raved about. Definitely worth it.

Caroline Shealy and Brandon Sauers Saturday, March 1, 2014 Ceremony: Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Reception: Savannah Yacht Club On Location: We stuck to venues that celebrated our Savannah roots. We had our rehearsal dinner at Belford’s downtown, and reserved hotels around the historic squares for our guests. Brandon is from a large Irish Catholic family, so the cathedral was a perfect fit. I tied in my family with the reception at the Savannah Yacht Club. The entire weekend felt like a wonderful review of the best parts of our childhoods.

Virginia Lewis and Bobby Shelley Saturday, July 26, 2014 Ceremony: Isle of Hope United Methodist Church Reception: The Savannah Golf Club Planner: Posh Petals and Pearls Tour Guide: As native Savannahians, we wanted our guests to fall in love with our beautiful hometown. We chose venues that showcased the many beautiful areas of our favorite city. Our rehearsal dinner, bridesmaid’s luncheon, and guest hotels were all downtown; our ceremony was on the islands; and our reception was in a historic, Southern golf club. We offered walking tours on the morning of our wedding and a beautiful map of all our favorite places.

Bonnie Stewart and Chris McIntosh Saturday, May 23, 2015 Ceremony: Bethesda Academy’s Whitefield Chapel Reception: Bride’s family home Planner: Sebrell Smith Designer Events Make a Splash: We were inspired by a simple sketch Chris’ late father drew of a sandpiper and his reflection on the water, and we wanted to incorporate his memory. We both love boating and Chris has a rich family history of sailing, so we also incorporated a rope “tie the knot” theme for the wedding weekend. The entire weekend was spent on the water, outdoors. That’s what Savannah is to us. Home on the water.

Jennifer Moesch and Christopher Collins Saturday, June 14, 2014 Ceremony: The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist Reception: The Mansion on Forsyth Park Planner: Posh Petals and Pearls Here, Here: Historic Savannah, its tradition and charm were the inspiration for our wedding. It was an easy decision to have our nuptial mass at the awe-inspiring Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, built in 1873. A Place for Us: We gave guests a custom wedding map of downtown Savannah, showing the locations of our love story in watercolor and calligraphy. We will always treasure it.

INSPIRATION SHOOT: Runway to Romance

Timeless elegance isn’t going anywhere, but for the couple who’s more Widespread Panic than Wedgwood china, we put together a luxurious love-in.
The fall runways of New York Fashion Week were illuminated with Seventies-inspired silhouettes—wide-leg flares, gauzy floor-grazing gowns and patchwork coats in shades of cool aqua, goldenrod, and moody maroon. When we asked Adrienna McDermott and Nicole Schwalge of Ivory and Beau to create an editorial shoot that tapped into this Woodstock-inspired inclination, they served up a perfectly on-trend shoot brimming with enough haute hippie flair to make Stevie Nicks proud. “We thought of the movie Almost Famous,” Nicole says. “Rock star meets bohemian hippy in an airplane hangar. For the color palette, we went with a combination of mustard yellow, pops of turquoise, burnt orange, dusty rose, and shades of brown, all of which felt very retro to us.” Designed and produced by: Adrienna McDermott and Nicole Schwalge, Ivory and Beau Photography by: Wendy Norman, Apt. A boho bride respects her maids’ individuality, so Nicole and Adrienna put aside traditional, matched taffeta and scooped up a variety of alternative, affordable frocks from Fabrik boutique. Flower Child. Your bridal bouquet should complement your gown, not compete with it. Our stylists paired an off-the-shoulder Daughters of Simone creation with a gracious plenty of pale yellow spray roses, pink anthurium, protea, ranunculus, Monte Casino asters and waxflowers. “We live for love stories,” says Tristan Zabenko Needham. “We want even our inspiration shoots to be based on a story and a sense of true love.” When we challenged Tristan, Alysse Sweeney and their team at Design Studio South to envision an event based on Fall 2015 fashion trends of feathers, fur and glitter, they rose to the occasion with a flight of fancy. “We imagined this shoot as a marriage of two naturalists: a bird watcher and a gardener,” Tristan explains. “We took an organic approach that fits in perfectly with Savannah’s historic gardens and homes.”

making marry Braveheart meets Shakespeare in Love at a creative celebration that’s steeped in Old World elegance.
By Andrea Goto | Photography by Holly Everett
On an August afternoon in 2011, Savannah College of Art and Design professor R. Campbell made two spectacular catches at a Sand Gnats game in Grayson Stadium. The first was a foul ball; the second was the love of his life, Jeanne Svendson. Exactly two years later, R. proposed. He and Jeanne, the owner of the chic Galerie 124, began to imagine a wedding that would enchant their families, traveling from Oklahoma and Louisiana, respectively. “Not a hydrangea in sight,” laughs local wedding designer and coordinator Audrey King of French Knot Studios, who assisted with the event. “Typical brides with weddings of this caliber want it all draped in white fabric and white flowers, and you can’t tell those weddings from any other high-end wedding. But with this wedding, everything was truly special and truly them. You couldn’t walk into the space and think you were at anyone else’s event.” Our Way to Fall R. and Jeanne’s vision began with their shared love of autumn, which inspired a palette of muted earth tones reminiscent of vintage ribbons. But they also wanted a richly romantic affair, drawing inspiration from Elizabethan-era accents and paying tribute to the groom’s Scottish heritage. The couple sought the creative guidance of lead event planner and designer Joel Kirby of Curly Willow Studios in Greenville, South Carolina. Jeanne had met Joel a few years prior while he was setting up for a wedding in Palmetto Bluff. Taken by his skillful designs, she asked for his card, predicting she’d “need this one day.” Together, they settled on a concept inspired by a Scottish hunt club— with a little bit of Renaissance flair. The bold Campbell tartan, fabulous
Creature Comforts.
Pairing the bucolic with modern luxuries, Joel created table runners from lush greenery and draped tables with heavy, looseweave linen that mimicked the look of burlap—without the scratchy feel. “It has a better drape to it than burlap,” Audrey notes. “It doesn’t have that earthy aroma and it’s not itchy.”

faux furs and overflowing feast tables provided a rustic flavor to both the rehearsal dinner at the historic Old Fort Jackson and the reception at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum. These masculine accents, along with antlers, pheasant pelts and deer mounts, were juxtaposed with gilded candelabras and richly hued florals. Audrey fashioned delicate Elizabethan ruffs from silk ribbon for the bridesmaids’ wrists and placed 100 larger versions behind the reception’s main bar to create an ethereal installation. Jeanne’s “something old” was a collar made from the mantilla her grandmother and mother both wore on their wedding days. Garden of Earthly Delights To accommodate the ample guest list, Joel and Audrey opted to divide the sizeable outdoor reception site into three spaces: a cocktail area, a buffet, and action stations serving such delicacies as lump crab cakes and

Happy Hunting.
Regal deer mounts, sourced from a family hunting lodge, decorated the reception’s main bar. Antlers and plush pheasant pelts adorned the pergola walls and Joel tucked feathers into boutonnieres and floral arrangements to extend the pastoral motif.
That’s a Wrap.
An unexpected cold front that rolled in the day of the wedding did not deter the planners. “Faux fur throws were part of the décor theme from the beginning,” explains Audrey. “It was fun because I thought guests would sit on a couch under a blanket, but instead a lot of them fashioned them as capes around their shoulders and wandered around.”
A Piece of Work. R. and Jeanne got permission from local artist Olivia Beaumont to have her whimsical paintings printed on Mylar, blown up and mounted as lighted panels. The bride and groom also commissioned Beaumont to paint a wedding portrait of their “spirit animals,” a coyote and a deer. The painting was unveiled at the reception and now lives in their shared home.

chipotle-spiced fried green tomatoes. Guests sipped Moscow mules from copper mugs, mingled among high-top cocktail tables, and lingered in cozy loveseats that nestled up to fire-pit tables. To create ambiance and intimacy, the designers set several banquet tables on diagonal angles, hung rich fabric draping, and backlit semitranslucent panels of art. The effect was a carefully curated event that defied the “matchymatch” motif of some modern weddings. “The collected feel makes for a more interesting experience for your guests,” Audrey explains. “They’re constantly looking around and seeing something new. There’s always a little surprise.” The welcoming weekend aimed to bring guests into the fold—roasting marshmallows, sharing stories around the fire, and cozying up under fur throws—rather than placing them passively in the wings. Joel and Audrey assembled a team of 16 to stage the elaborate affair, which included the rehearsal dinner for all 350 guests, the wedding, a bridal luncheon and a brunch, and yet the performance seemed to unfold organically. “It was a finely tuned machine,” Audrey muses. Not long after R. made that fateful foul catch, he inscribed a quote from Picasso on the ball that reads, “Everything you can imagine is real,” and gave it to Jeanne. Their wedding offers proof that the artist was right. The bride and groom imagined an intricate event that would delight their guests, honor their past, and celebrate their collective future. And now for the happily ever after. S
A Moveable Feast
Because a sit-down dinner would be too difficult to orchestrate for 350 guests, R. and Jeanne opted for action stations and a late-afternoon buffet that included an assortment of tea sandwiches and chicken curry over rice. Guest kept moving throughout the space, rather than anchoring in chairs for the entire evening. “Officially there weren’t enough chairs,” admits Audrey, but a wide variety of surfaces ensured a place to rest your drink.

In an effort to focus on friends, not trends, a Houston couple says “howdy” to the Hostess City. By Andrea Goto | Photography by Jeff Gentner and Mollie Woody

fall/winter 2015-16
When you’re the two tallest people in the room, it’s hard not to notice one another. But falling in love? That’s serendipity. Greg Denton, a mechanical engineer, had flown to Kansas City to attend a friend’s wedding. At a piano bar, a striking and nearly 6-foot-tall Christine Havlicek caught his eye—and threw him a curve ball. “You and I would have giant babies,” Christina recalls saying. Greg, a looming 6-foot-8-inch Houston native, was caught off guard. But by the end of the weekend, he changed his flight to spend an extra day with the woman he soon decided was “the one.” Sav-endipity Later, the couple met up in Savannah for their first vacation together. They fell head over heels for each other—and for the Hostess City. “We knew we were getting married in Savannah, even though we hadn’t figured out how it would work,” laughs Christina. “There was no question.” During their engagement, Christina relocated to Houston to be with Greg, making it difficult to scout Savannah’s multitude of wedding venues and vendors. Fortunately, the charming Whitefield Chapel at Bethesda was a shoo-in. “When Greg drove up and saw the trees and the church, he said, ‘This is where I see myself marrying you,’” Christina recalls. But, before that could happen, the pair wanted to show off Savannah to their out-of-town guests. “We wanted them to fall in love with the city as much as we did,” the bride enthuses. That’s just one reason why they scheduled the ceremony for a Sunday, giving their guests a long weekend to explore Savannah’s squares and secrets. Southern Comfort The couple called upon local wedding planners at Ivory and Beau to assist with some of the finer details—none of which Christina wanted to stress about. Her vision was classic, bypassing trends for a timeless look. “I pictured a romantic, Southern and elegant wedding,” she recalls. “And as long as I was marrying my best friend, I was happy.” Every couple has priorities, however. “We wanted to feel good in our clothes, so we did splurge on the attire,” Christina admits. Greg wore a custom navy tuxedo, and she a luxurious lace Monique Lhuillier gown.
Bridal Showers. As the big day neared, the forecast took a turn for the worse, but Christina remained unshaken. “I ordered a clear umbrella from Amazon and had it shipped to our wedding planners,” she recalls. “I hoped I wouldn’t need it, but I did.” Now, she loves that the pictures capture the day as it actually unfolded, rain and all. “My dress got really dirty and the lace ripped, but you wear it once so ... it’s well loved.” Perfect Coordinates.
There are many ways to commemorate a couple’s nuptials, but Greg ratcheted up the romance with the delicate gold bracelet he gave to Christina on the morning of their wedding, engraved with the GPS coordinates of the Whitefield Chapel. On the inside, it reads, “C+G March 22, always”—the date they first met and, three years later, married.

Petal Pushers.
As Christina and Greg exited the chapel, their guests showered them with fragrant handfuls of lavender in paper cones fashioned from the pages of books, creating an unexpected memory for the senses. “To this day, whenever I smell lavender, I’m reminded of my wedding day,” Christina says. “That was one of the best touches.” However, the dried petals stubbornly embedded themselves in Christina’s hair and dress. “It smells amazing, but for the rest of the night, I was itching like crazy,” she admits, laughing.

“No one else will remember your dress—but you will remember how you feel,” she explains. The other essential was video footage of the ceremony and reception. The bride hired photographers and videographers from Jeff and Mollie Weddings after seeing a five-minute highlight reel they shot for another wedding. “I was smiling from ear to ear all day, but I don’t remember some of it,” Christina recalls. “It went so fast that I’m glad to have it on film.” Greg and Christina weren’t interested in an elaborate event that would keep up with the proverbial Joneses. Instead, they focused on their friends and family. Both their officiant and wedding singer were Christina’s close childhood friends. The pianist, Andy Giebler, is one of Greg’s good buddies—and he was there that serendipitous first night at the piano bar. “Had it not been for Andy,” the bride gushes, “we probably would not have met.” Andy, that is, and a vision of giant babies. S
Sisterhood of the Traveling Veil.
Christina was given the fingertip veil that two of her best friends wore in their weddings. It didn’t perfectly match her dress, but “perfection” didn’t outrank how honored she felt to wear it, or to pay it forward. “I don’t know whose wedding is next, but I will pass it along,” Christine says. “It’s the traveling veil.”
Last-minute Details. You can spend months accounting for every detail, but sometimes the last-minute inspirations pack the most punch. A mock photo booth, complete with props, was a hit with the selfie-snapping guests, though Christina only added it on a whim. The glow sticks also ignited a party atmosphere, as guests danced into the night. “They were the best $40 I ever spent,” she laughs.

Destination bride and groom Valerie Brown and Garry Grant had a clear vision for their wedding. The New York duo was looking to combine modern and traditional elements, to reflect their love of art and jazz, and to honor their African-American heritage. Savannah, a city that melds the historical with the contemporary, stood out as the ideal location. Most important, it’s also the city in which Valerie’s parents grew up—and where they married 51 years ago at the First African Baptist Church. Back in Time Valerie’s family story is just a small chapter in the history of First African Baptist, which is the oldest black congregation in North America and was once an integral part of the Underground Railroad. She and Garry could think of no better place to celebrate their ancestry—and their love. Valerie and Garry wanted to welcome their guests to a traditional soul food rehearsal dinner, a guided history and art tour, and a black-tie reception. To accomplish this from their northern location, the bride conducted thorough research and secured the local expertise of Design Studio South’s Alysse Sweeney. Power of Intention The bride felt strongly about working with African-American and women-owned businesses, so Alysse helped her handpick local vendors who would provide exceptional service. They selected Sisters of the New South to cater a traditional soul food rehearsal dinner in the downstairs auditorium of the storied church, a cradle of Savannah’s Civil Rights movement. The walk through history continued throughout the weekend. On the morning of the ceremony, guests enjoyed a private African-American history tour and a viewing of the solo exhibition by New York-based artist Nari Ward at the SCAD Museum of Art. Yes, We Do “The wedding ceremony, particularly the music, was extremely important to both of us,” the bride recalls. “Some couples accelerate the ceremony so they can get to the reception, but we really wanted to focus
Pick New Flowers.
For bold bursts of coral, Alysse selected the amaryllis, a bright bloom that doesn’t conventionally appear in wedding bouquets. “It’s not the same flower you see at every wedding—it’s not a calla lily,” the designer says, laughing. “It’s just a little different and unique.” For her bouquet, the bride opted for a more traditional, round white-rose bouquet to coordinate with her stunning sequined Paula Varsalona gown.

The historic role of the First African Baptist Church makes for an awe-inspiring setting in which to wed. Guests who toured the church prior to the ceremony had an even deeper appreciation, learning that the handsome 1885 stained-glass windows depict images of the congregation’s earliest pastors, and that the church’s ceiling is in the design of a nine patch quilt, marking the church as a safe house for slaves. fall/winter 2015-16 savannah weddings

on the significance of our union. Todd Stoll from Jazz at Lincoln Center helped us curate a beautiful selection of jazz, spirituals and gospel music, and Savannah pianist Eric Jones led a trio that really set the mood during the ceremony.” The couple’s sophisticated style carried over to the black-tie reception at the Telfair Museums’ sleekly modern Jepson Center for the Arts, where guests were greeted by the jazz trio, sparkling flutes of prosecco and passed appetizers. Works of Heart “With the Jepson, you have such an amazing blank canvas,” Alysse enthuses. “You can pretty much do anything in there and it turns out amazing.” One of the early concepts was to incorporate sculptures created by Garry as artful centerpieces for the reception tables. The gilded pieces, flanked by twinkling candlelight, were focal points in the stark-white atrium. Arrangements of lush greenery softened the contemporary surroundings, and tables were named for the couple’s favorite artists and musicians. After the plated dinner service, the bride and groom danced late into the night with friends and family until they made their exit, highlighted by a showering of white rose petals. The arrangement of events had the effect of a meaningful and symbolic journey. “It was a great juxtaposition to move from the historic church to then come over to the modern venue of the Jepson,” the planner notes. “It was like moving people through time.” S
Night at the Museum.
Garry, a visual artist represented by The Sol Studio in Harlem, used his signature gilding technique to create more than a dozen sculptures for the tables. At the end of the evening, the sculptures were wrapped and given to the bridal party as parting gifts. The groom kept the regal female bust at the head table, which appeared in an exhibition in New York just a week after the wedding.
Play It Again.
“The bridal processional was ‘My Funny Valentine’—a song that is very special to us,” shares Valerie. “Garry surprised me with a proposal in front of a live audience at the Newport Jazz Festival last year. Ron Carter was playing ‘My Funny Valentine’ in the background, and he dedicated the song to me as part of Garry’s proposal. It was a moment I will always remember.”
In Memoriam.
“Another beautiful moment during the ceremony,” recalls the bride, “was the lighting of a memorial candle in honor of Garry’s mother, the late Katherine Grant. My pastor offered a wonderful dedication and tribute. While we lit the candle, my dear friend Carla Harris sang ‘Heaven is a Beautiful Place I Know,’ a moving African-American spiritual.”
A Place for Us.
“Being married in Savannah was a magical experience,” the bride reflects. “We celebrated my family’s ties to the city, Savannah’s rich history, and our appreciation for what’s happening now in Savannah in terms of arts, culture and cuisine. People are still talking about it, and one couple loved the experience so much that they’re buying a house in Savannah.”

In keeping with the black-tie vibe, guests were served plated dinners and enjoyed a tableside wine service. However, the first course—a trio of salads—was served family-style to encourage guests to interact with one another. “Even if you start by saying, ‘Please pass the salad,’ it gets people talking,” explains Alysse. One of the salads—a traditional green bean dish—was a family recipe Valerie recalled from childhood.
Raise the Bar.
Rather than lingering for the entire evening in the expansive Jepson Center atrium, guests were encouraged to move about the various levels and explore the galleries. This was accomplished by strategically placing the bars on the second and third floors during the cocktail hour. A third bar featuring after-dinner cordials was opened in the southeast corner of the museum to mark the end of the dinner hour and the opening of the dance floor.

Returning to the scene of their art school days, a creative Colorado couple hosts a fête that’s equal parts crafty and cool.

Picture this: It’s a cool November evening, and some of your nearest and dearest are winding down an oak-lined drive, a dusky fall sky peeking between the mossy canopies behind them. They’re illuminating the path with glowing candlelit lanterns as they walk along, arm in arm. Nothing but the warm chatter of old and new friends accompanies the collection of guests as they walk to an aged gate down the way. That’s how Amber Chance and David Riddle’s wedding began. Rather than wandering on their own, guests made the journey as one. It was fitting for a couple who had been together for more than eight years, through grad school and a cross-country move, among other adventures. “It was the most beautiful beginning to a wedding we have ever seen,” gushes wedding planner Nicole Schwalge of Ivory and Beau, who, along with her business partner Adrienna McDermott, helped the artistic couple plan their intimate affair.

Earthen Vessels Originally from Colorado, the pair first encountered each other during pottery class at Colorado State University. They came to Savannah for graduate school at SCAD—animation and illustration, respectively—but moved to Atlanta shortly after earning their degrees. “Savannah was the first place they lived together, and they still come here every summer with their Atlanta friends for Labor Day weekend,” Adrienna adds. “That’s why they chose Savannah as their wedding destination.” The two artists wanted their event to have that same handmade aesthetic that brought them together. They started by choosing picturesque locations that would capture the right mix of nature and art. “Wormsloe was perfect for the ceremony because it has an iconic Savannah feel to it, but we chose Cohen’s Retreat for the reception

because it’s a really different new artistic space—lots of exposed brick and room to create whatever we needed,” Nicole adds. The couple chose the aptly named Art Tank at Cohen’s Retreat, a beautifully renovated 1930s rest home that now serves as a mixed-use community and event center. Colorful Characters For the artists’ palette, the planners suggested a bohemian blend of cool turquoise with warm ambers and pinks, plus pops of gold and burnt orange. These vibrant strokes of color were visible throughout the whole celebration, from amber water goblets situated around the dinner table to the vivid peonies placed in vintage glass bottles scattered around the room.

Flower Power.
Tiny cacti in handmade Lilliputian pots, lovingly crafted by the happy couple, acted as name cards. The bright aqua pots and naturally pink and orange flora ensured a perfectly coordinated tablescape—and guests took them home as party favors. Handmade “rock cozies” crocheted by Amber and David’s grandmothers added another layer of personality to the table.

Tops of the Pops. Planning a meal for dozens of people can be overwhelming, which is why so many brides and grooms are choosing to include made-to-order snack stations. Whether it’s a trendy biscuit bar, or the ever-popular sundae bar, multiple options provide a buffer for the hungry-yetchoosy guest. In between dancing and drinks, Amber and David’s well-wishers sampled from a selection of sweet and salty popcorns, with add-ins like chili and lime cashews.

A menu of unique comfort food from the couple’s favorite restaurant, Zunzi’s, was served on bespoke wooden bowls rented from Ultra Pom. Mini pecan pies and a buttercream cake (complete with a ceramic cactus cake topper crafted by the bride) rounded out the deliciously homespun menu. The couple and their families pitched in to add unforgettable handmade details—the guests were enlisted for the lantern processional and the couple’s grandmothers served as alternative flower girls. But, despite the abundance of personal touches—like the custom chalkboards with the couple’s favorite quotes about romance—“the most important thing about their wedding was that it was the beginning of the rest of their lives together,” Nicole enthuses. “Yes, there were a lot of cool Southern details, but the focus really was on them.” S

They say you know when you know. So, when Jessica Wyatt and Michael Fraser got engaged, they already knew they’d found the one: a destination they would return to for their “I dos.” “[Savannah] was the first place we ever shared a home,” Jessica recollects. “We moved here together and it always just seemed like ‘our’ city.” After gaining degrees from SCAD—her master’s in motion media, his bachelor’s in architecture—the couple relocated to San Francisco, but their dream wedding stayed put. That presented the interesting challenge of designing an intimate, personal wedding from a distance. “We were planning it ourselves, and we also have very hectic and demanding work lives that don’t provide a lot of spare time,” Jessica explains. Work and Play She and Michael turned obstacles into opportunities, using their professions to generate some of the details that were most important to them. “We both work in creative fields and looked at it as an opportunity to interpret a wedding in our own way,” the bride explains. “We really looked at every aspect of our wedding as a design challenge of sorts, asking, ‘How can we make this ours?’” Jessica works as an art director for an advertising agency, which came in handy. “I used my company’s studio space for our engagement portrait,” she recalls. “I took advantage of Photoshop countless times. I was able to mock up my entire wedding look—hair, jewelry, shoes—so I could get an idea of how everything would fall together without actually having it in front of me. “Mike works for a company specializing in 3-D fabrication, so the two of us collaborated on a “logo” of sorts to use on our invitations and wedding material such as our guestbook.” The Long View The planning process was certainly not without a bit of difficulty, since the pair had to rely on phone and email when making decisions.
“We both work in creative fields and looked at it as an opportunity to interpret a wedding in our own way,” the bride explains. “We really looked at every aspect of our wedding as a design challenge of sorts, asking, ‘How can we make this ours?’” Cater to Your Guests. Intimate weddings mean infinite venue possibilities in Savannah, where the prime historic location and built-in catering at Cha Bella Restaurant are only part of the charm. Sparkly tea lights and a patio swing add whimsy to this medium-sized turnkey venue, which proves perfect for a smaller guest list. Easy on the Details. “Don’t get caught up in other people’s expectations— or whatever crazy thing they’re doing on Pinterest,” warns the bride. “Never take yourself too seriously. Things will undoubtedly go at least a little wrong. Just take it with grace and remember what’s important: you’re marrying someone you love.” fall/winter 2015-16 savannah weddings

“We decided to not get too wrapped up in the tiny details but to focus on the big picture,” Jessica says. For example, she and Michael asked their wedding party to choose their own attire to fit a general description. This gave their friends a chance to express themselves—and to work within their own budgets. “I hate feeling like I’m micromanaging other people’s outfits,” the bride explains. And, even though she planned to create giant paper bouquets for herself and her bridesmaids, Jessica found herself exhausted and short on time. She called in a professional: local florist Maria Kato, who delivered a surprise. “I suggested simple baby’s breath bouquets, and she brought in the succulents and eucalyptus, which sounded good to me,” the bride recalls. “I wasn’t expecting the masterpieces she delivered! They were so different and beautiful. “I was even able to keep some of the succulents from the bouquet and repot them at home. They make for a great memento of a wonderful day.” S
Make it Yours. Details make your event personal and memorable. For example, the use of eucalyptus was intended as a nod to the bride and groom’s new home in California, and the porcelain dog figurines honored their pup, Dexter, who couldn’t be present for the festivities. Let Them Eat Pizza. The pair’s rehearsal dinner choice was “purely selfish,” says the bride. “We love Screamin’ Mimi’s and just wanted to eat pizza. Also, we were both so exhausted from planning the actual wedding and flying cross country that we kept the rehearsal dinner as casual as possible.”

When former Savannah resident Alyson Arnold wed New Yorker John Schreiber, there was no question as to where they would say their vows. The pair now divides their time between New York and Los Angeles, but Alyson lived in Savannah for 14 years, and the couple spent a lot of time here during the early stages of their relationship. “John was enamored with the city when he first came to visit me, and we thought our friends and family would feel the same,” the bride says. In the Spotlight Alyson and John brought in Andrea Harper of Gray Harper Event Maker to handle the details—starting with the venue: the magnificent, meticulously restored Lucas Theatre for the Arts. Built in 1921, the theatre is a breathtaking blend of Greek Revival and Art Deco styles. Not only did it provide a stunning backdrop for the celebration, but it also came with a sound and lighting crew poised to highlight every magical
moment. The crew even had tickets printed up for the big day, giving each guest a one-of-a-kind memento. With such a grand venue, the day-of details came easily to Andrea and her team. Velvet linens used during the cocktail hour were a nod to the stage curtains that had been pulled aside to make way for the festivities. A solid mahogany bar rental set the stage for classic St. Germain cocktails, served alongside local Bluffton oysters gratin, Georgia shrimp and pimento cheese toasts, and Ashley Farms chicken and waffles.
When a last-minute storm put the Warren Square ceremony out of commission, Harper moved the action indoors, and the couple said their “I dos” on the stage they’d reserved for their reception. fall/winter 2015-16 savannah weddings

The hors d’oeuvres were passed on platters stacked with vintage F. Scott Fitzgerald novels—a theme that was furthered by a romantic Fitzgerald quote that lit up the theatre’s marquee for the evening. Plated dinners of Hunter Cattle Farms’ NewYork strip and pecan-crusted sea bass were served at tables swathed in greenery and peony buds to match the bride’s bouquet. Improv Artists When a last-minute storm put the Warren Square ceremony out of commission, Andrea moved the action indoors, and the couple said their “I dos” on the stage they’d reserved for their reception. A little quick thinking went a long way, enabling an even more dramatic backdrop than planned for the most important dialogue of the couple’s lives. A performer in his own right, the groom moonlights as the lead singer of LA-based band Jimmy’s Brother, so his priorities were clear. He chose a bluegrass band out of Charleston, carefully curated several reception playlists, and enlisted a band mate to play a moving solo. “Music is everything to John,” Alyson recalls. “He chose the song I’d walk down the aisle to several months before he even proposed!” For the bride, selecting the right photographer was paramount, so she called on husband-and-wife team Jade and Matthew McCully to capture the celebration. Otherwise, the pair was content to let Andrea take the reins. “They really trusted me to make it beautiful, which was so nice,” the planner recalls. “And they were a dream to work with.” S
Perfect Pairs. Alyson and John wanted their wedding to be gender-neutral— nothing too feminine or too masculine. To achieve this, Andrea kept the florals simple, focusing on peonies, the bride’s favorite. The rich, luscious blooms enriched the décor without making it fussy.

Inside Out. Though the couple hosted their wedding indoors—and in a historic Savannah building with few windows and no candles allowed—they wanted their reception “to have an outdoor feel,” Andrea says. To achieve this feat, the designer draped the stage with twinkling bistro lights and scattered faux tea lights across tables. Memories “To-Go.”
Each guest received a custom to-go cup—a Savannah staple—for everyone to use all weekend as they took advantage of what Alyson refers to as “one of the greatest perks of downtown.” Savannah’s open-container laws allow sipping and strolling from plastic cups up to 16 ounces between Hutchinson Island, Jones Street, MLK Jr. Boulevard and East Broad.
A Fine Romance. “Alyson and John wanted a mix of elegant and easygoing,” Andrea recalls, “so I chose hemstitched linen napkins and wooden chargers for their dinner to add a touch of sophistication without overdoing it. Something simple can make a difference aesthetically but not financially.”

though they LIVE in Atlanta, software designer John Flynn and first grade teacher Lyndsie Davis have an ongoing love affair with Savannah. So when it came to planning the sort of wedding they had hoped for—a simple and festive affair with meaningful Southern touches—it only made sense to allow the Hostess City to set the stage. “The beauty of getting married here is that the city does a lot of the work for you,” Lyndsie explains. “The more simple the accents, the more you can let Savannah shine through.” When Lyndsie’s father learned of the couple’s destination wedding plans, he was adamant that they hire a local event planner to ensure that the mother of the bride, who helps to plan weddings and events in her own right, wouldn’t have to lift a finger. “I wanted my mom to enjoy herself on my wedding day, because it was just as special to her as it was to John and me.” The couple hired Andrea Harper of Gray Harper Event Maker to champion their vision for their best day ever. “Not only did my mother have nothing to worry about,” Lyndsie recollects, “but Andrea made the entire engagement season so enjoyable for everyone.” Garden Party “They knew what was important to them and they just wanted to have fun and relish the beauty of their day,” recalls Andrea, who helped create elements that complemented rather than separated their wedding from Savannah. Andrea served double duty as planner and floral designer. She created lush masterpieces, including the bride’s crown and bouquet, out of unique flora such as Juliet and Patience garden roses, pepper berry, olive branches, astilbe, and ivy and camellia buds foraged from Andrea’s own backyard. “Everything from the garland at the ceremony to the table centerpieces extended the magic of Savannah to our guests,” offers Lyndsie.
Something Sacred.
The ceremony is just as important as the reception, so one shouldn’t outshine the other. John and Lyndsie adapted their spiritual ceremony to include a number of symbolic gestures by members of their wedding party. These thoughtful touches helped keep the event focused on the deep and abiding meaning of their union.

The Sweet Life The intimate ceremony was held at the timeless Whitefield Chapel at Bethesda Academy, where the couple invited their wedding party to take part in a series of meaningful gestures. They wanted their closest friends to “really connect with the spirituality of their union,” says Andrea. The reception at Savannah Station was equally touching. An espresso bar—an homage to John and Lyndsie’s undying love for caffeine—was stocked with custom coffee sleeves commemorating the big day. To sate the couple’s shared sweet tooth as well as celebrate Lyndsie’s passion for baking, they employed Samantha Sanford of Lavender and Honey Designs, who handcrafted an unparalleled dessert experience. Three tables were spread with a varied mix of handmade cookies, cakes, whoopee pies, hand pies and bars covering any and every sugar-craving the couple and their guests may have had. “Lyndsie saw photos of a table I had done for another Savannah wedding,” explains Samantha. “When she got in contact with me, she was so sweet and so excited about her table, it reminded me of when I got married and my enthusiasm revolving around the dessert table. I couldn’t wait to work with her after that! We also bonded over our sincere love of ice cream and Nutella and, I think we both knew it was a match made in sweet heaven.” For John and Lyndsie, it was the icing on the cake for their perfect day. Keep Calm And … In all the hustle and bustle of the wedding day, Lyndsie and John took a quiet moment together to “slow down and taste the sweet life.” The pair hopped into their 1937 Packard, rented from Timeless Motor Coaches, and made a pit stop at Back in the Day Bakery on the way to the reception. There, the couple received a warm hug from owner Cheryl Day and noshed on a cookie and a cupcake. Little Things.
Andrea captured John and Lyndsie’s playful aesthetic with delicate flowers and greenery, as well as “love notes” from Lyndsie’s students, wishing the couple well in their new life together. Softly glowing candles illuminated these thoughtful and personal details.

When Bobby Davis and Rhonda Nimblette wed, they wanted to celebrate in the style of Rhonda’s Caribbean homeland— without subjecting their guests to the hassle of international flight. “We wanted our friends to enjoy the city they were in,” says Rhonda, who lives with Bobby in Sumter, South Carolina, but hails from the tiny island nation of Grenada. “There’s something about Savannah— the quaintness and the culture—that I knew even my Northern friends would appreciate.” Rhonda asked local planner Andrea Brown to help her say a Grenadian “I do” in the center of downtown Savannah, at the high-rise Hilton Savannah DeSoto hotel.
“I wanted a Caribbean theme, but elegant,” Rhonda says. “I called it ‘Caribbean chic,’” she laughs. “Well, I called it that in my head—never out loud.”
Piece of Cake.
Andrea helped the couple stick to their theme by suggesting a strawberry lemonade cake with cream cheese icing made by Savannah local Katrina Knight and frosted in an orange and white gradient pattern.
Culture Club. You’ve heard of reception dresses, but what about reception hats? Rhonda slipped off her gauzy veil and donned a custom-made feather headdress to perform a traditional Granadian carnival dance with her close friends.

A Spice Isle Soiree Faced with the task of creating a wedding that would celebrate the culture and style of Grenada without feeling “too beachy,” Andrea and her team skipped the obvious seaside locations and sandy accents in favor of bright, Caribbean-inspired colors. Teal, purple, orange and a hint of silver gave the ballroom a festive feel. By incorporating small touches of the island—such as vases of shells along the aisle and framed photographs of the tropics at each table— Brown created a wedding that was festive but not fussy. The bride took her theme one step further with a steel drum player at cocktail hour—a nod to her father, who used to play the instrument—and a DJ, who mixed American pop with Caribbean soca music. “The mix brought together two cultures seamlessly,” Andrea says. Rhonda also commissioned a Caribbean menu of beef empanadas, crab cakes and Grenadian grilled chicken—which was such a hit that the Hilton DeSoto later added the chicken to its regular menu. Here Comes the Pride As her guests continued to enjoy the celebration, the bride snuck off to her room. There she replaced her traditional white veil with a custommade turquoise-and-orange-feathered headdress. When she returned, she and three friends performed a traditional Grenadian carnival dance to the delight of everyone in attendance. “My intent was to have the reception be a true fête,” Rhonda says. Andrea, who maintains a close personal friendship with the bride, says she’s never hosted such a happy group of people. “Rhonda trusted me to craft her vision—and I learned a lot about her culture by working to create the picture she had in her head.” S

It's a garden party for a spirited West Virginia couple in search of a fun “un-wedding.” By Amy Paige Condon | Photography by Jade and Matthew McCully
In 2012, Liz Fort met her match, Matt Lehman, when the two fell into a deep discussion about Greek history in a Washington D.C. bar where Liz tended and Matt was taking a break from classwork. The two took their time on the way to the altar. They eventually moved to Morgantown, West Virginia, where Matt is earning his second and third bachelor’s degrees in mining and civil engineering, and Liz is working toward a master’s in public administration. But a trip to Liz’s hometown of Savannah during the summer of 2014 convinced the unhurried couple to set a date. “I was struck by the beauty of the Telfair Museums,” Matt says—and a weekend during their next spring break just happened to be free. Local Characters To help bridge the distance between West Virginia and Savannah, Matt and Liz needed someone local to help with the details. Liz had seen planning powerhouse Posh Petals and Pearls on the web and decided to give them a call. On her first meeting, Liz walked in to recognize her former Savannah Country Day School classmate, Adrienne Lino, as her wedding planner. Knowing Adrienne, Liz felt sure that her vision for a “garden party meets speakeasy” would be realized. “[Liz] wanted it as ‘un-wedding’ as possible,” Adrienne recalls. “She wanted a big party and a few quirky things that were important to her.” To achieve that inviting, unfussy atmosphere, Adrienne, Liz and Matt spent a lot of time and energy searching for vendors the couple felt comfortable with. They fell into an easy friendship with caterer Nick Mueller—and they appreciated the “efficient and chill” vibe of photographers Jade and Matthew McCully. “We could be ourselves and just hang out with them,” says Liz. “And we were so confident and comfortable with Adrienne,” adds Matt, “I knew everything would be fine.”
In Bloom.
An avowed Anglophile with a special fondness for rose-scented English gardens, Liz envisioned a flowery Telfair Square ceremony that was “fancy, but not stuffy.” Adrienne brought the garden theme to life with help from Amy Harvey of Amy Harvey Designs, who fashioned lush bouquets, basket arrangements and centerpieces with florals in deepening shades of coral. The orange-pink blooms complemented the bridesmaids’ jewel-toned cobalt and emerald dresses. These colors—Matt and Liz’s favorites—and the garden theme inspired the details from start to finish. fall/winter 2015-16 savannah weddings

A Tale of Two Parties And fine it was. Adrienne transformed the Telfair Academy into two set pieces for the reception. The garden party ceremony in the square carried into the downstairs sculpture gallery, where Chef Nick Mueller and Co. served savories from a series of stations. A favorite was the fried green tomato station with toppings ranging from herbed goat cheese to bacon salsa. Free to drift between floors, guests stepped upstairs into a glamorously dimmed Prohibition-era speakeasy in the rotunda, replete with black barware, lounge-y masculine furniture, and a band that performed songs specially selected by the bride and groom. A Deeper Meaning The Art Deco period captivates both Liz and Matt. “The art, entertainment of the 1920s and ‘30s—that’s our jam,” says Liz. Adds Matt, “[It] was an era where women were set free … and as much decadence as it had, there was also a lot of philanthropy.” As the philosophical newlyweds entered the reception, Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life” played and guests were treated to a surprise when Matt and Liz “Fortman” were introduced. Before the wedding, the couple had decided to meld their surnames—Lehman and Fort—signifying the joining of their two families into a whole new one. S
Melt With You.
The chemistry between Matt and Liz extended to their wedding set. The couple gathered jewelry from both sides of their family and worked with Anderson Jewelers to create new heirlooms with what Liz describes as “all of the family heritage and love mixed in.” From the 13 original pieces, they crafted Liz’s diamond-and-sapphire engagement and wedding rings, Matt’s wedding band, a diamond pendant and diamond earrings Liz wears every day.
Getting to Know You. Because Liz and Matt’s family and friends were coming from far and wide, the pair planned cheerful mixers for guests to get to know one another before the big day. The entire wedding party and partners gathered at the former Dept. 7 East on the Thursday before the wedding for a catered affair. Guests were treated to a mid-day low country boil at the Delegal Marina the day before the wedding, and, as a send-off, nearly all of the guests feasted on a farewell brunch at Pacci.
