EDITOR'S LETTER

BY THE TIME THIS ISSUE HITS NEWSSTANDS, I will turn 41 and officially be in my 40s. I spent this past year at the threshold, looking into the decade ahead with uncertainty because my body had already begun to change in ways and at a rate for which I wasn’t prepared. Suddenly, the first mile of every run made me feel like a rusty locomotive, trying to get up to speed. And where I used to sleep through the night, I started sleeping in “episodes”—and incidentally never between 4 and 6 a.m. I regularly found myself standing in the kitchen pantry only to realize I was looking for a pen. And the sweating. So much sweating. So, while I’ve long been interested in health, I used to care about how to get faster and stronger. And while I still want to be faster and stronger, I’m acutely aware that at some point faster and stronger just ain’t gonna happen. Coming to terms with that can be tricky, so I’m trying instead to be more focused on what can help me feel and be my best right now. I’m concerned about my hearing, my aches and pains, my dental health, my skin—in short, I’m worried about the things I have taken for granted for the past four decades. That’s why I was so excited to delve into editing this health supplement. It gave me an opportunity to see how much the field of health and medicine has evolved, and especially here. Savannah has top-of-theline caregivers who are passionate about their work. We also have access to medical technology that far surpasses cities of the same size. (And in order to make use of these recources we have to know about them.) To me, this issue is about giving you (and me) the information we need to live our best lives. To be able to look ahead to whatever decade we’re facing down and confidently say, “Bring it.”

Spooning isn't just something you do with your partner. Jen Mark's Acupuncture (2431-B Habersham St.) now offers gua sha, also known as "spooning" therapy. This traditional Chinese medicine treatment involves stroking a smooth, blunt instrument over lubricated skin to benefit sore or injured muscles by stimulating blood flow to the area. Another treatment that sounds like it comes straight from the kitchen table is “cupping” therapy, now available at Heal Acupuncture (2424 Drayton St.). The alternative medicine treatment, made popular by Olympian Michael Phelps and celebrity Gwyneth Paltrow, involves placing special heated or vacuumed cups on the body to create suction, drawing blood to the area to alleviate pain and inflammation. Though the relaxation effect is similar to a deep-tissue massage, expect some temporary bruising. For our more intimate body parts, Wax and Wane (1917 Bull St.) offers “Half Moon” and “New Moon” post bikini-wax treatments to polish and refine skin that may have become irritated—think of it as a below-the-belt facial. Perhaps the biggest news on Savannah’s healthcare front is the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) $456 million purchase of Memorial Health. The hospital system will maintain the Memorial Health name but adopt the new "caring star" logo, which represents the link between Memorial and the community. Rivaling that news is St. Joseph's/Candler’s plans to open a "micro hospital" in early 2019 to serve the residents of Pooler and the surrounding areas. Phase one includes a 61,000-square-foot medical office housing primary and urgent care services. The entire project will be opened in phases over a 10-year period. Also serving Pooler is the Emerald Neuro-Recover Center (125 Southern Junction Blvd., Suite 201), which provides all-natural alternatives for recovery of opioid dependency, alcoholism, chronic stress, depression and anxiety. The outpatient treatment center uses intravenous infusions to decrease cravings quickly and alleviate anxiety that often accompany traditional drug or alcohol dependency treatment. Because infant care continues past birth, SouthCoast Health Pediatrics (310 Eisenhower Dr.) now provides in-office lactation counselors who can help breastfeeding go more smoothly. By the numbers, Shepherd Living at Savannah Quarters (LiveShepherd.com) might just be the best new thing in retirement living: 10-acres, 24/7 care, two greenhouses, four courtyards and one top-of-the-line spa and wellness center. And Fido is welcome, too. —AMELIA PARKES

Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) gives patients with non-melanoma skin cancers an alternative to surgery. Small cones are applied directly to the affected area so the radiation is concentrated, eliminating the fatigue and nausea that often come with treatment. “Patients are in and out in about 10 to 15 minutes, though multiple treatments are required,” says Jamie Gonzales, radiologist for Gaughf Dermatology, the only dermatology office currently offering SRT.

FACE/SKIN

People who experience vertigo, dizziness or imbalance are in constant fear of falling, which can drastically impact the quality of their lives— particularly for the elderly. But a new treatment exists. The FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Center at Coastal ENT offers the Safety Overhead Support (SOS) system as a key part of therapy. The ceiling-mounted rail system safely supports harnessed patients as they move. “This retrains the brain, the spinal cord, the inner ear, the sensory feeling of walking—all the things that affect balance,” says Dr. David Oliver, ENT.

EAR

Thanks to remarkable innovations in medicine, Savannahians have access to high-tech procedures and treatments that are minimally invasive and maximally life-saving.

Studies show that knee replacements are 2-3 times more accurate when surgeons use robotic technology, which is precisely why the MAKO Robotic Arm is invaluable. The technology also creates a virtual 3D model to allow surgeons to preplan a surgery that’s specific to the patient’s anatomy. “The biggest benefit is much more precise bone cuts so the knee is well-balanced,” says Dr. Jonathan Christy, orthopedic surgeon at OPTIM Surgery Center.

KNEE

Patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) commonly take blood thinners to reduce their significant risk of stroke, but this can be dangerous for those at risk of bleeding or falling. Enter The Watchman, a tiny parachute-like device that can be inserted into a “pouch” off the upper chamber of the heart, safely sealing off the area where clots commonly form and eliminating the need for blood thinners, explains Dr. Michael Chisner, cardiologist at St. Joseph’s/Candler.

HEART

What’s commonly referred to as a “sleeve” gastrectomy—the most common procedure for weight loss—just got easier. The state-ofthe-art da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System means fewer incisions, greater mobility for the surgeon during surgery and less discomfort for the patient post-surgery. “With robotic instrumentation, it gives you the ability to manipulate tissue similar to the way you would with your hand, rather than with a straight instrument,” says Dr. Oliver Whipple, surgeon at Memorial Health University Medical Center. That’s excellent news for a practice that performs around 300 bariatric surgeries each year.

STOMACH

To treat life-threatening pulmonary embolisms, patients once had to endure a high dose of clot-busting medicine that came with some serious risks. Today, the EKOS catheter can administer a much smaller dose of the medicine directly into the blood clot. “Ultrasonic frequencies loosen the mesh work of the clot and allow the drug to penetrate deeper,” explains Dr. Michael Babcock, cardiologist at St. Joseph’s/Candler.

Say What?

New tech in audiology— because hearing matters more than you think. By ANDREA GOTO

MY HUSBAND, 49, says he can’t hear me because I mumble, but I know it’s not me. It’s him. I know this because when we watch TV, the volume is so loud, the sofa shakes. He wears glasses because he can’t see, and yet he refuses to accept that his hearing is an issue, as if doing so would mean he is somehow defective. But the thing is, because of all the new tech out there, there’s no better time to address hearing loss, and not doing so can seriously mess with your brain. LISTEN UP A 2011 study out of Johns Hopkins University shows that hearing loss independently contributes to dementia and Alzheimer’s. And it contributes a lot. “Mild amounts of hearing loss double the chance of acquiring dementia and Alzheimer’s,” explains Gabriel Pitt, audiologist at Optimal Hearing. “With moderate amounts of hearing loss, that risk increases three-fold. With severe

degraded hearing loss, it increases five-fold.” Do I have your attention now? The jury is still out on how hearing loss and cognitive impairment are connected. It could be that people with hearing loss have to concentrate so much harder to process sound than those with normal hearing, essentially overloading the brain, so to speak. Or, people with hearing loss tend to isolate themselves from social situations because it’s just easier, and this isolation leads to cognitive decline. There is good news, however. There are studies showing that hearing devices decrease the chance of acquiring dementia and Alzheimer’s. “It’s a very compelling reason to do something about hearing loss sooner rather than later,” Pitt says. CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? “Hearing devices used to be simply an amplifier,” says Susan Timna, audiologist at Audiology and Hearing Aid Services.

And for good reason: Timna pipes in recorded reverberant restaurant sounds. Eventually, Timna hopes to create soundtracks specific to local restaurants so that patients can select the locations they often visit. During my session, Timna gets feedback from patients and wirelessly programs the hearing aid on a laptop. The room also includes a sofa on which I can sit and watch TV to replicate the at-home viewing experience. I suddenly regret not bringing my husband.

“People could either make sound loud or soft.” Today, the devices do most of the work for us. “They have processors like a computer—even though they’re very small—and they can separate speech from noise,” says Timna. Digital hearing devices also pair with smartphones. An app allows calls to go directly to the hearing device without any Bluetooth pieces. Patients can also the app to turn their hearing device volume up and down, though it cannot address the issue of background noise. to a new level with an in-office sound simulation room—the only one of its kind in Savannah. “Every person perceives sound differently,” says Timna. “The room makes it so we can program the hearing aids while they’re in a very noisy environment they frequently visit.” A table and chairs sit in the center of the room, in front of a large mural of people eating and chatting as if in a restaurant. A large-screen TV controls the sound, pumping in music, conversations and clanking tableware from strategically placed speakers. At first the sound is jarring and unnerving—unexpected in

REMOTE CONTROL All this tech isn’t cheap. Hearing aids range from $1,200 to $3,600 apiece. The higher the cost, the more bells and whistles. But not everyone needs the Bentley when the Honda will do. For these folks, Karla McKenzie, audiologist at Coastal ENT, explains that there are a number of wireless accessories they can purchase to pair with a less-expensive hearing device. These intermediary devices serve as a remote control for the hearing aid and can adjust volume, stream a phone call or even the television, which I’m learning is a shared frustration for many couples. “The remote control allows the patients to change the volume for them, without affecting the volume for their partners,” says McKenzie. Some patients opt for a remote microphone to better hear their partner. The partner wears the microphone on their lapel and it wirelessly sends their voice directly to the patient’s hearing aid, cutting out the background noise. McKenzie notes this was particularly useful for one of her patients whose wife had Parkinson’s and he was worried that he wouldn’t hear her if she needed him. Armed with all this important information on audiology, I’m going to delicately breach the hearing issue with my husband. I just hope he hears me. Photography by ANDREW VON GOELLNER

Not Your Mother’s Dentist By SYLVIE BAGGETT THE NEWEST ADVANCEMENTS in dental medicine are revolutionizing traditional methods, meaning less discomfort, minimal downtime, and maybe even a little fun.

staff are specifically trained in both the therapeutic and cosmetic application of Botox, patients get a double-whammy win: fewer headaches and fewer wrinkles. What could be better than that?

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A HEADACHE

LASER FOCUS A trip to the dentist can feel like … well, a trip to the dentist. But as technology improves by leaps and bounds, the process has come to involve some real “Gee whiz!” moments, as Dr. Eric Gladden likes to say. His new favorite toy—I mean tool— is the laser. Depending on the laser’s settings, it can aid in involved procedures such as root canals by reshaping the gums and eliminating bacteria, or simply kickstart the healing process post-op. Rather than suffer through the discomfort (and horror) of a steel scalpel in the mouth, patients now have the option of surgical operations via laser. Not only is it less invasive than traditional methods, patients report having little to no discomfort during laser surgery. Gladden explains that lasers also have the capacity to stop an infection in its tracks. If a patient comes in with a cold sore or herpes outbreak, the laser can be dialed down and applied to the affected area, immediately halting the production of infectious cells and allowing the healing process to begin.

Botox for your mouth? Yes! Dr. Lindsay Sammons at Howard Family Dental wants you to know that Botox does more than ease pesky fine lines and wrinkles—it aids in minimizing pain stemming from temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) and migraines. Sammons estimates that 25 percent of the population suffers from headacheinducing disorders – and since 2011, she has been using Botox not only for its cosmetic purposes, but also as therapeutic treatment for her headache-affected patients. Once injected, Botox works by acting as a protein that binds to muscle, limiting movement so that pain receptors in nerve endings don’t have the chance to activate. For about 3 months after treatment, patients experience less frequent, less severe headaches – just like magic. The procedure is so effective that one of Sammons' clients gets treated every three months, like clockwork. And since Sammons and other members of her s30

Dr. Rutledge Coleman Jr. of Morrison Dental Associates is equally as enthusiastic about the benefits of using lasers—namely PerioLase—to stimulate new bone growth and treat gum disease. “It’s a game-changer,” Coleman says. While recovery from traditional periodontal surgery would take up to a couple of weeks, patients recover from this less invasive laser procedure in two days on average. HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT, TOO What’s worse than a kid at the dentist? A kid at the dentist with a cavity (or three—thanks, Sour Skittles). Rather than risk the potential danger of anesthetizing children, Dr. Stephanie Sweeney opts for a more conscious solution. “Silver diamine fluoride is great for kids, because it stops cavities without any drilling or sedation,” Sweeney explains. She simply paints the fluoride over the cavity, effectively stopping any further decay and creating a protective barrier. It’s a relatively inexpensive alternative to crowns or extraction. The bad news? The fluoride turns the tooth black. But once the child is old enough to safely tolerate it, the cavity can be filled with tooth-colored material. And dentistfearing adults can use it, too.

Hats Off New treatments for hair loss will have you driving with the top down in no time. By ANDREA GOTO

HEN I WAS LITTLE, thanks to my mom and dad, I thought all women had babies and all men lost their hair. As I got older, I realized that pregnancy was optional, but hair loss was your genetic destiny. Subsequently, I deemed it much easier to be a woman. But since the ’80s more has changed than just bangs and shoulder pads. There are now effective treatments for hair loss—and I’m not talking about toupes recently. Dr. Tim Minton of Savannah Facial Plastic Surgery added hair-loss treatments to his repertoire not only because he was trained in the field, but also because studies show that treatments actually work. That’s good news for male-pattern baldness as well as the large number of women who experience hair loss.

patient’s blood and isolating the platelet rich plasma, these growth factors can be used as a regenerative medicine. In orthopedics, PRP is used for tissue and joint regeneration, facials, and it’s even injected to improve libido. “The concern is that we’re using PRP in regenerative medicine without a lot of evidence-based data as to protocol and its efficacy,” say Minton, “except when it comes to hair.” Large-scale studies show that PRP is effective for hair, and protocols—how many treatments to do, and when to do them—are also prescribed. The treatment involves microneedling the scalp and then infusing PRP to activate the follicles. It usually requires three treatments every four weeks and maintenance treatments every 6-12 months. “PRP is also helpful when doing a hair transplant in order to stimulate the new follicles to grow and to help the scalp accept those follicles,” notes Minton.

“TODAY, THEY MAKE A CAP THAT YOU WEAR AT HOME THAT LOOKS LIKE A BEANIE AND IS HOOKED UP TO A BATTERY."

PLUG IT IN To treat hair loss, a surgeon would traditionally take a batch of hair follicles from a “healthy growth” area (usually at the back of the head) and transplant them to a thinning area, usually at the frontal scalp or crown. To harvest the hair, the surgeon would take a strip of skin from which to harvest the follicles. This created a large linear scar that could be visible with very short hair. Additionally, hair plugs resulted in an unnatural look because it’s difficult to mimic the natural angle the hair would grow or sit. The solution presented itself in the process of taking individual follicular units as opposed to a big strip of skin. The second-generation NeoGraft device Minton uses has a punch mechanism that harvests tens of thousands of random individual follicle units. Those units are then transplanted to the new area with care and concern for the most natural angle and heal without a visible scar. MIRACLE GROW Before surgical treatments, Minton always begins with the nonsurgical hair restoration treatments, which have made huge advances in the past 10 years. Patients with hair loss often have wispy hairs that can be encouraged into mature, long hairs through nonsurgical methods such as platelet rich plasma treatments (PRP). By drawing a

BLITZKRIEG Often, the best approach to hair re-growth is to combine several nonsurgical approaches like PRP to get the desired results. Another nonsurgical, cutting-edge treatment for hair loss involves low-level laser light therapy which photo-stimulates hair follicles. When this procedure first came out, a patient would visit the doctor’s office a couple of times a week and sit under the laser light for about 30 minutes. “Today, they make a cap that you wear at home that looks like a beanie and is hooked up to a battery,” says Minton. “It’s studied and proven to stimulate hair growth.” According to Minton, the oral medication Propecia is also very effective in treating hair loss but may cause sexual side effects in men. “Now compounding pharmacies have come out with a topical Propecia that may provide the same level of growth without the side effects,” says Minton. A smorgasbord approach to hair loss seems to produce the best results—not only for treatment, but also for long-term maintenance. And as for my childhood test of whether or not it’s easier to be a man or a woman, it's looking like more of a draw. Thanks, technology.

STAY WELL Put Me in, Coach! Discover how a health coach can get you back in the game.

C OU R T ES Y C LA U DI A DE EN

By AMELIA PARKES FROM TIME TO TIME, I go on a health kick: I buy spinach, I actually enter the gym, I go more than 24 hours without an alcoholic beverage. The problem is that I usually launch into these whims guided only by what I've read on a fitness blog, and within a matter of days, fast food, cocktails and my couch draw me back into their warm, sedentary embrace. What I need is accountability … in the form of a health coach. Claudia Deen and Megyn Jefferson, both certified health coaches, say most people come to them with the same goal: to lose weight. But clients quickly learn that a coach’s job goes beyond improving diet and developing exercise routines. It’s about emotional and physical well-being.

“We all want the easy solution: I’ll follow a diet and lose weight and I’ll be happy ... but there’s usually a lot more to it.” “We’re trained to work with people in a more holistic way,” Deen explains. “We talk about physical activity and diet, but we also talk about creativity, spiritual life, work environment—it’s about how to get these aspects of your life in balance so you can function well.” Like Deen, Jefferson sees herself as an advocate for her clients rather than a lecturer. “We are trained to empower people to make their own intuitive decisions rather than assigning them a diet,” she says. “We give strategies to help clients implement the changes they already s36

know they need to make.” And then there’s the issue of identifying the reason why a person is overeating or feeling tired or depressed. “We all want the easy solution: I’ll follow a diet and lose weight and I’ll be happy,” says Deen. “But there’s usually a lot more to it.” Which is not to say that a health coach is a dietitian, therapist or doctor. “We are not [to be used] in lieu of these professionals,” says Jefferson. “But we can benefit traditional medicine by partnering with a doctor to help a client comply with what is prescribed.”

And with all this work, Deen’s and Jefferson’s clients usually do lose weight. “A lot of people say ‘I feel much better, I’m sleeping much better, my intimacy with my husband is better,’” says Jefferson. “And ‘oh, I also lost 10 pounds.’ There’s always an outside improvement.” Even though I've been averse to coaches since high school tennis, I'm starting to believe sustainable health habits aren’t as impossible as I once thought, as long as I have friendly face to guide me. That, and a chicken nugget or a vodka tonic every once in a while. After all, it’s about balance. I BET IT’S A FREAKY SIGHT. I’m lying face down in a quiet, darkened room with 10 needles sticking out of my shoulders while I'm trying to “relax.” A few of the needles are connected to what looks like a car battery with tiny clamps. Those needles pulse rhythmically while the others sit quietly, deep into my muscles. Dry needling is similar to traditional Chinese acupuncture in that they use the same tiny, almost imperceptible, needles. However, the therapies are distinctly different when it comes to By ANDREA philosophy and terminology. Where acupuncturists claim to move “qi” along pathways that correspond with organs, systems or functions to restore balance, the Western approach is based on anatomy, physiology and stimulating a response from the body. Simply put, “Dry needling increases circulation and muscular relaxation, and decreases pain to the area being treated,” says Stayce McKenzie, a physical therapist at OPTIM. “It brings good stuff in and pushes the bad stuff out to promote healing.” Both practices acknowledge how the body functions like a network. Throw one part out of whack and another goes with it. The problem is, too often doctors focus on alleviating a symptom (such as pain), but not necessarily addressing the root of the problem. This is particularly true when it comes to women’s pelvic health, which was an entirely foreign term to me until I spoke with McKenzie, one of the few therapists in the area to specialize in the field. She tells me the body is all about “balance,” which sounds like a pretty Eastern concept to me, until she instructs me to stand on one leg. “You’re off balance,” she declares (oh, if she only knew). “You have weakness in your left glute.” She asks if I have lower back and hip pain. Yes, and yes. “One hip sits higher than the other,” she adds, which brings an end to my long-held belief that my right leg is longer than the other. “When we think of our core, we think abs and back muscles,” says McKenzie. “But you need to think about the top and bottom

of the canister formed by those muscles: the diaphragm and the pelvis.” For women, a weakness in the pelvic floor, also known as prolapse, can cause backache, hip problems, painful intercourse, numbness and incontinence often associated with pregnancy. Unfortunately, many women who endure these symptoms either do so silently or are told to give their bodies “extra time to heal.” But while silence and time might not help, physical therapy may. McKenzie begins with an external and internal examination of the pelvic area, which is similar to an annual exam GOTO performed by an OB-GYN. “I feel for tissue tone,” says McKenzie. “Often there are restrictions and pain that patients don’t even realize are there.” From there, she can prescribe exercises to improve strength and function. She can use dry needling to stimulate certain muscles, making the patient more aware of what’s needed to properly squeeze, lift and “fire” the pelvic floor. She can also target nerve points that correspond with certain organs, such as the bladder. In about 10 minutes, McKenzie teaches me how to fire my pelvic muscles, breathe more effectively and strengthen the weak neck muscles contributing to the tightness in my shoulders that she’s treating today with dry needling, which is why I’m in a dark room with needled shoulders and battery hookup. While I didn’t feel the needles go in, I do feel their presence, irritating my angry muscles. And I’m relieved when McKenzie returns about 20 minutes later to take them out. When I peel myself off the table, I’m dazed and confused, as if I’ve had a deep-tissue massage. The next day I’m sore, but it’s a good kind of sore. A get-the-bad-stuff-out-and-the-good-stuff-in kind of sore. The treatment and the techniques McKenzie gave me made me acutely aware of my body in a way I hadn’t been in a long time, if ever. You can call it “qi,” you can call it trigger points, but I’m going to just call it effective … and spread the word.

Put a Pin in It Pain-free needle to ease your pain? Yep, it’s a thing.

Office Space An inspired office delights kids and teens—and helps doctors get the job done. By ANDREA GOTO MY CHILD, now 12, actually likes going to the doctor. She always has. I could chalk this up to stellar parenting or profound bravery on her part, but I think I should give credit where it’s due: the office is just cool. Coastal Pediatrics’ Midtown office boasts themed exam rooms—themes like dinosaurs, farm and outer space—and the waiting room is divided into three distinct spaces: a newborn area, sick room and well room. Their new Pooler location, which opened its doors in January, is organized much the same way— though with 1,000 additional square feet, pediatrician Dr. Matt Wilson describes it as, “Like the Midtown office, but on steroids.” There, each themed exam room is age-specific, designed to accommodate evolving interests and skills. The toddler rooms s40

include a built-in café, camper, and train station, and older children enjoy a 7x8 foot Lego wall and mini basketball court. The teen room, meanwhile, includes an arcade table stocked with dozens of games. Some may see this all as just bells and whistles to keep patients content, but there’s more to it. “As a pediatrician, I can watch patients play to assess their gross motor development, fine motor skills, and speech as they interact with me and with their parents or siblings,” says Wilson. This whole setup might horrify my mother, who used to warn me, “Don’t touch anything!” Here, they encourage play. NAVIGATING ADOLESCENT VACCINES It’s easy to be confused about what’s necessary—and what’s safe. Dr. Ben Spitalnick sets the record straight. MANY PARENTS TRUST their child’s pediatrician when it comes to immunizations, but it’s important to know exactly how these shots protect your child, and from what. Each year, a branch of the Centers for Disease Control approves a recommended vaccination schedule. It’s then adopted by various medical specialties, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. While officially they’re only recommended, the immunizations are also scientifically acknowledged as effective and most are required by pediatricians and both public and private schools. There’s nothing “new” to the list for 2018, but there are two vaccinations— Gardasil (HPV) and Meningitis B—that may seem new simply because they weren’t available to earlier generations. Gardasil, the vaccine administered at ages 11-13 to prevent HPV, earned an early bad rap as an STD vaccine only for girls. But Dr. Ben Spitalnick of Pediatric Associates of Savannah and president of the Georgia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, explains that’s simply not the case. “It’s a cancer vaccine that prevents HPV, which in males is a leading cause of throat cancer,” he says. “It’s absolutely recommended, and it’s absolutely safe.” Meningococcal has been on the list of necessary immunizations for years, but s42

SAVANNAHMAGAZINE.COM

meningitis B was added about 6 years ago. This vaccination prevents severe meningitis outbreaks in colleges and, as such, is often required for college students. Yet, some people still hesitate. “There is concern spread over the Internet about the effectiveness of the vaccine, possible side effects, and if it’s worth getting when it may not be required,” Spitalnick explains. “But the science and research show that it’s effective, safe and worth getting.” The one immunization that is not new, but sometimes considered by parents as unnecessary for adolescents, is the flu vaccination. Spitalnick is unwavering in his belief that children should be immunized against the flu every year— and he backs it with data. “Flu is the number one leading cause of vaccinepreventable death in the United States,” he says. “While most flu-related deaths actually happen in the elderly, the kids are the primary vector that spread it to the community.” It’s still possible to contract the flu after being vaccinated, as Spitalnick points out. “Studies show that people who get the flu shot have a significantly lower risk of being hospitalized from the flu,” he explains. “This past flu season, the data shows that 90 percent of children who die from the flu are non-immunized kids.” Bottom line: get the shot. —ANDREA GOTO

Imagine This A cutting-edge open MRI puts pediatric patients and their parents at ease.

IMAGINE ASKING A 6-YEAR-OLD to lie still for 15-30 minutes while closed off inside a tube. Yeah, I can’t either, which is why many doctors have to rely on full sedation with anesthesia to get high-quality images when it comes to kids, adding a real health risk to an otherwise safe procedure (unlike a CT scan, there’s no ionizing radiation with MRI—it’s all magnetic). Enter the high-field open MRI by Hitachi. Dr. Jack Considine, radiologist at Coastal Imaging, which has the only MRI of this kind in Savannah, calls it a “game-changer” for the city, providing the highest-quality imaging and surgical-quality studies, all while making the procedure more comfortable for young patients. As opposed to the conventional “tube,” Considine describes the open MRI as being similar to lying between two slices of bread. “The tube can be pretty intimidating for a small child,” Considine says. “But because ours is open with full access all around it, both parents can be in the room, leaning in and talking to the child, even holding their hand.” If necessary, a parent can even lie down next to the child during the procedure. Considine notes that the open MRI doesn’t just benefit pediatric patients—it’s more comfortable for any patient who might feel anxious in the tube MRI. Additionally, because the machine can hold upwards of 600 pounds, larger patients finally have access to high-quality imaging. A game-changer indeed. —ANDREA GOTO

Audiology and Hearing Aid Services 803 East 68th St., Savannah, GA 31405 912.351.3038 Other Locations: Pooler, Statesboro and The Village on Skidaway Island 912.598.0616 (Skidaway Island Direct) From left: Katherine Neufeld, AuD, CCC-A; Casey Allen, AuD, CCC-A; Susan Timna, AuD, CCC-A; Cori Palmer, AuD, CCC-A;

WE ARE THE LEADING EXPERTS IN: Your hearing health. Aging, noise exposure, smoking, poor cardiovascular health, high BMI, and diabetes are among the common health issues that can negatively affect the auditory system and cause hearing loss. Untreated hearing loss has been linked to an increase in depression and cognitive decline. Allowing hearing loss to go untreated can have serious consequences to your overall health. WE’RE MOST PROUD OF THE FACT THAT WE: Live and practice in Savannah and we strive to provide the highest quality of

hearing health care to our community and the surrounding areas. We are dedicated to working with our patients to determine the best treatment plan for their individual needs. OUR PATIENTS OFTEN TELL US: They “hear fine, but they don’t understand what is being said.” As we age, we use more cognitive resources to understand speech, especially in background noise. This is why understanding speech cannot be restored by simply turning up the volume. Most hearing aids on the market will help to make sounds louder, but to improve a patient’s

understanding abilities, you need the right technology and programming inside the hearing aid. As technology continues to improve, we have more and more tools available to help successfully restore a patient’s ability to understand in hard listening situations. WE ARE MOST EXCITED ABOUT: Our simulation room. We have the ability to simulate real life listening situations in our state of the art facility. We can program your hearing devices to maximize hearing in noisy places. This is the only room like it in the city—the very first of its kind.

Our highly qualified physicians are all board certified in Gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and have been trained in leading institutions across the country. Collectively, our diverse backgrounds and medical expertise of specialty procedures set our practice apart from our peers. ACCREDITATION: Our Endoscopy Center is nationally accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. (AAAHC) and has continually held this distinction since its inception, earning a 100 percent rating

score on our 2018 AAAHC survey. Our facility also received Medicare Deemed status by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. CONVENIENCE: We strive to make our physicians and services more easily accessible for our patients. In addition to our main location, we have offices in Richmond Hill, Pooler, Springfield and Bluffton to provide convenience and prompt appointments for our patients. Our Endoscopy Center is equipped with the latest technology, including in-house pathology and a fully staffed team of anesthesia specialists. By using the most up-to-date endoscopic techniques, we are able to offer more convenient treatment and a faster recovery for our patients.

ADVICE—COLONOSCOPY SCREENING: Men and women who are at an average risk for colon cancer should begin colon cancer screening at age 50 and age 45 for African-American individuals. A colonoscopy is the most effective method of screening for colon cancer and is not just for detection but prevention as well. Regular colonoscopy screening and removal of polyps reduces your risk of developing colorectal cancer by up to 90 percent. The new American Cancer Society 2018 guidelines recommend that average-risk adults aged 45 years and older undergo regular screening. CONTACT US: We welcome both new and returning patients to our practice. You can contact our appointment staff by calling 912.354.9447 and following the prompts. We look forward to caring for your gastrointestinal health. SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

positively impact and improve my patient’s lives. MY PHILOSOPHY TO MEDICINE IS: To treat patients like I would treat a family member. I’M A LEADING EXPERT IN: The surgical and non-surgical management of TMJ pain and dysfunction. I was fortunate to train under the pioneers of TMJ arthroplasty, TMJ arthroscopy and TMJ total joint replacement. ONE THING I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE IN MY FIELD IS: The advice offered to patients who have TMJ signs/symptoms. Historically, patients who had a “popping” sound when they open their jaw, were told to just ignore it or live with it. But, TMJ is a progressive disorder. If treated early, it can be treated non-surgically or with minimally invasive procedures.

MY GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT HAS BEEN: Being the father of two wonderful young boys. They are what makes my life meaningful and have purpose. THE HEALTH ISSUE I’M MOST CONCERNED ABOUT IS: TMJ pain and dysfunction. I am fortunate to have found a profession that I am passionate about and one in which I can make a difference. MY PATIENTS OFTEN TELL ME: “Thank you for helping me get my life back.” I can’t describe the feeling I get when I hear those words.

I’M A LEADING EXPERT IN: All things oral and maxillofacial surgery. I am particularly adept at dental/alveolar surgery and implants. I LOVE PRACTICING IN SAVANNAH BECAUSE OF: The people. Savannah is filled with an eclectic mix of personalities and lifestyles. I meet new and interesting people every day. WHEN I’M NOT IN THE OFFICE: I like to not be in the office. It’s hard not to take patients home with you, mentally. Fishing, flying, reading and spending time with my family are all diversions that I enjoy.

MY CHARITY OF CHOICE IS: The Friends of Barnabas Foundation. I’ve had the opportunity to work with this foundation, performing cleft-lip and palate surgeries in Honduras. The organization does an excellent job of coordinating care and making sure the majority of donated funds go to help the patients. I STAY HEALTHY BY: Thinking about exercising. It’s not as effective as actually exercising, but it’s much easier to do. MY PATIENTS OFTEN TELL ME: “You don’t act like a doctor.” I am not sure if this is a compliment or an insult. I’M A LEADING EXPERT IN: Assessment and treatment of hearing loss and tinnitus, which is a ringing sound in the ears or head. A tinnitus assessment can provide important information to determine the proper way to manage one’s symptoms. The underlying cause can range from wax buildup to sinus or allergy problems to hearing loss or even a TMJ disorder. In most cases, there is something we can do to help minimize and possibly eliminate the tinnitus.

I WAS ATTRACTED TO THIS FIELD: As a child. Being the third generation in my family to work with the hearing impaired, I’ve seen the benefits of optimal hearing from a young age. I have seen my grandfather help people whom I now see in my office, and I’m even seeing the grandchildren of patients my family has helped. I knew from a young age that I had a passion to help people obtain optimal hearing. NEW RESEARCH IN MY SPECIALITY: Shows that maintaining optimal hearing has the potential to improve cognitive

function. Over the last decade, multiple studies have established that individuals with hearing loss are at an increased likelihood of acquiring dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. In addition to these compelling results, a study out of France found that the use of hearing aids attenuates cognitive decline in elderly people with hearing loss. My hope is that this helps motivate more people to do something about a hearing deficit, and having your hearing professionally examined is the best way to do that.

I WAS ATTRACTED TO DENTISTRY: Because my childhood dentist dramatically changed my life! My teeth weren’t naturally beautiful, but with the help of a cosmetic dentist, any smile can be amazing. MY FAVORITE WAY TO STAY FIT IS: To play in the water. I’m an avid fan of all watersports, and I would be content to surf or kiteboard all day, every day! My newest sport is foil boarding – if you haven’t seen it, I’d recommend watching a video of it. I’ll bet it will make you want to get out there and try it! I also enjoy golf, tennis, wakeboarding, yoga, pilates and sailing!

MY GO-TO SPOT IN SAVANNAH IS: Not in Savannah at all, but it’s on Tybee Island! After a day on the water, I always enjoy North Beach Grill or Hucapoos. They usually have live music and great food, and you’re always welcome, even if you are still sandy and salty from the beach! YOU’D NEVER GUESS THAT I: Am super passionate about reducing the amount of waste we use. During recent surf trips to the Dominican Republic and El Salvador, it broke my heart to see the amount of trash in the ocean – mostly single use, disposable plastics! I avoid using straws and

bring my Yeti cup everywhere to avoid to-go cups. Even in my smallest purse, I fit a collapsible camping cup to use as a to-go cup if needed! IF I WASN’T A DENTIST, I WOULD BE: A fashion designer. I was always an artistic individual—I even designed my own clothing in high school! I turned my grandmother’s vintage scarves into skirts and dresses and upholstery projects scraps into handbags. I have always enjoyed creating something beautiful. Today, I create amazing smiles.

MY APPROACH TO MEDICINE IS: Treat my patients the way I want to be treated. We make sure to always put you first in everything that we do.

MY MENTOR TAUGHT ME: A lifelong lesson when I was 11-years-old—how to improvise.

MY PATIENTS WOULD DESCRIBE MY CHAIRSIDE MANNER AS: South-Georgia friendly!

I WISH MORE OF MY PATIENTS WOULD: Understand how important oral health is to their overall well-being. MY OPINION ON GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY: A good friend of mine has a motto: “Give like you live.” I donate and raise funds for many charities locally, nationally and internationally. Most recently, we celebrated our grand opening with a fundraiser for the Rape Crisis Center. P.S.—I love to socialize!

HE A LTH

SALT of the CITY PAUL HINCHEY enters the building like a boss. He moves quickly, greeting staff with a handshake here, a pat on the back there, inquiring about their children and weekend plans. He’s equally as warm with patients, asking if there’s anything they need. Of course, Hinchey is the boss. In his 26th year as the CEO of St. Josephs/Candler—and a key player in the 1997 merger—he has made a career of overseeing the care of others. “We don’t make widgets,” Hinchey says. “We’re dealing with life and death, so the most important thing to me is patient care. The second thing is the people who work here. We’re very focused on hiring local people because we believe that Savannahians take care of Savannahians and Savannah families take care of Savannah families.” And Hinchey knows Savannah families. He met his wife, a clinical psychologist and Savannah native, in college 40 years ago and knew she had a plan to return to Savannah one day. When the position at St. Joseph’s became available, he jumped at the opportunity. Together, Hinchey and his wife relocated from Florida and raised four children in Savannah—two doctors and two lawyers—who all returned after college and currently live in Ardsley Park. “So, I guess we did something right,” he laughs. In truth Hinchey does a lot of things right, including contributing to Savannah’s $1.5 billion health care industry. “It’s a remarkably sophisticated medical community,” says Hinchey. “The amount of robotic surgery that takes place in this town is mind boggling. The clinical trials that are coming out of oncology are amazing. You just don’t see that in cities of this size. And that’s something I think we all need to be proud of.” —ANDREA GOTO
