NO ONE IS QUITE AS SENSITIVE TO SEASONAL CHANGE as a gardener. While the rest of us settle back into our school and work rhythms, the dog days of summer in the rearview, gardeners switch things up for the next harvest, trading the watering can for seedling trays and fertilizer for vegetable and flower sprouts as daylight wanes and temperatures drop.
“After a long summer, it is nice to be able to relax a bit, to reflect on the last growing season and to think about how to plan ahead for the next year,” says local photographer and farmer Amanda Churchill. She muses as she uproots her summer blooms to make space for the oxblood ranunculus, roses and scabiosas that blossom in their wake. “In the fall, you shift and pay attention to the little things,” she says. “It puts everything into perspective — people, relationships, connections become most important.”
In this issue, Churchill gives us an intimate look at her whimsical garden house, her family’s favorite spot for dinner parties and command center for her expanding botanical farm business (“Beyond the Garden Gate,” page 31).
Like a new season, refreshed home designs allow us to reframe and reflect our priorities, serving as personalized backdrops for our best memories and celebrations. That is certainly true of the real homes

ALLISON LANE FARMER is a writer and photographer whose passion for new places, inspiring design and a great story has led her to Airstream trips down Florida’s dirt roads, dive bars in New Orleans and more back road produce stands than she can count. Allison is no stranger to the charms of the Lowcountry, having grown up in neighboring Charleston, South Carolina, but is happy to call Savannah’s Ardsley Park home. While not behind a camera or clacking away at a keyboard, she can be found spending time with her husband, their six-month-old son, Baby Bob, and their three perfectly misbehaved dogs.
KENDALL MCKINNON is an Alabama native who graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in writing in 2021. She has since written for various publications — such as France Today, Art Journal, and Savannah magazine — about art, interior design, travel, books and Savannah, the city she loves most. Along with freelance work, she also writes full-time for SCAD in editorial services. When she is not writing, Kendall can be found playing with her daughter, reading, drinking tea or watching “Gilmore Girls.”
A TRANSPLANT FROM CONNECTICUT, Mary Fitzgerald is a long-time editor in the design and home furnishings field. She is a graduate of Gettysburg College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and earned a certificate of interior design from Parsons School of Design. Her career began in New York City at Family Circle magazine, and since then she has worked for bridal, shelter and lifestyle publications. Fitzgerald has enjoyed writing articles for Savannah magazine, saying, “It’s been a great introduction to the Lowcountry design scene and a pleasure to get to know so many talented designers, architects and homeowners.” She is passionate about travel and recently took a trip to explore the fjords in Norway and Denmark with a stop in Copenhagen for the 3daysofdesign event. She summers on Cape Cod, Massachusetts — to beat the heat — but is always happy to return “home” to Savannah.

ducks waddle and dogs lounge in the sunlight. Happy garden roses, anemones, ranunculus and scabiosas turn their faces toward the gardener perusing her raised beds — pruning and fertilizing, enriching their existence with her careful touch.
But in the fall, once seeds are sown and daylight lessens, Churchill, a photographer and owner of botanical farm and duck egg venture Le Cirq on Whitemarsh Island, takes her cues from the earth, trading long days of toiling for a season of rest and homegrown hospitality.
“The fall is the time you start to shift and pay attention to the little things, where you can focus on your relationships and strengthen them. It puts everything into perspective,” Churchill offers. “It’s really my favorite time of year.”
Churchill’s preferred place to take stock of “circus life” — her
affectionate name for the bitter and sweet sides of family existence — is in the garden house, seated around the sturdy wooden table for eight, saved for her by her father.
Scattered with flower arrangements, never so high as to impede conversation, and whimsical groupings of shells and feathers gathered by Churchill’s husband, James, and their daughters, Morgan (18) and Olivia (15), the table is the perfect place to settle in for a fantastic meal.

FOR THE PAST 16 YEARS, Charles “Chuck” Heydinger has spent most of his days in the company of “clients” who are decades, if not centuries, older than himself. A master woodworker and owner of Frank Furniture Studios, Heydinger specializes in restoring antique furnishings for prominent museums and private collectors, and creating one-of-a-kind commissions for architects and designers.
After studying architecture at the University of Kentucky and furniture design at Savannah College of Art and Design, Heydinger enjoyed an unparalleled education from one of Savannah’s foremost furniture preservationists Greg Guenther. Now, he imparts that knowledge to his dedicated team of artisans, ensuring important pieces stay in top shape and out of landfills.
Here, Heydinger shares his frankly honest advice, why there’s never been a better time to buy antiques and his enduring love for his craft.
ON HIS EARLY INTEREST IN THE FURNITURE ARTS
I have always been a craftsman and hobbyist. I read years of [my father’s] woodworking magazines before I ever used a saw. When I studied architecture at Kentucky in the ’90s, the culture was hands-on and experimental. We went back and forth between architecture and every other discipline of design and the arts. I soon realized I didn’t want to be a traditional architect because I liked having the ability to come up with a design and make it myself — furniture is small scale architecture. Now I enjoy working with design professionals like architects and interior designers.
ON HIS MOST SPECIAL COMMISSION YET
I assisted Greg [Guenther] with a pair of mahogany bookcase cabinets modeled after an 18th-century Philadelphia example from the Kaufman Collection. The job was so ambitious — I have no illusion

that I might ever be given such a challenge again. They were large, made from the choicest materials and wildly figured veneer with satinwood inlays and oval framed glass doors. I hand-wove patterned brass wire screens for the cabinet doors. It was a comprehensive lesson from start-to-finish on how to build period cabinetry in its finest form.
ON WHERE HE FINDS INSPIRATION IN THE HOSTESS CITY
The people I meet. I’ve had great working relationships with so many inspirational people filled with enthusiasm over the pieces they bring me. The museum curators I’ve met are often tasked with loads of responsibilities, the most important being taking great care of the artifacts under their control.
I also work with some serious collectors, some who are antique dealers and some who collect specific styles or makers. Their in-depth knowledge of the pieces they bring and the stories of the hunt to find them adds some personality to the work. There’s always a great story to each piece.
ON THE FURNITURE PERIODS THAT DESERVE MORE ATTENTION
I would like to see more consideration given to the Victorian or Eastlake periods. The eclectic mix of revival styles and the whimsical designs associated with mid- to late-19th century furniture fits in well with any modern interior. Furniture in this category is usually approachable for limited budgets and [because] the market is flooded with pieces from this period, great gems can be found in thrift stores.
ON WHEN TO DIY — AND WHEN TO HIRE A PRO
Do a little research on the piece to get an idea of value and quality and look at how it’s made to understand if it is a true antique or a reproduction. Is it made from solid wood or plywood and particle board? Is it put together with joinery or screwed together? Is the finish modern or traditional?
And consider what you are working on and your abilities. Many repairs can be made easily with proper glue and clamps, but I often see failed repairs made worse by using glues like epoxy and nails or screws which do damage by breaking or splitting wood fibers.
Liah Spilove, my conservation assistant, and I have decades of experience and a library of materials along with the tools and techniques to bring furniture back to usefulness and many more years of life.
Most new furniture is not as repairable or as interesting and timeless in design, so it has a short shelf life and ends up in landfills. Restoring furniture or commissioning an heirloom quality piece from craftsmen like us is the ultimate in practicing sustainability.
ON PASSING ON HIS CRAFT TO THE NEXT GENERATION
If the idea of sustainability is as important to Gen Z as they say it is, just as fast fashion is a concern, fast furniture should be too. Everybody wants something cheap that looks good and [consumers] often just judge an object by its appearance. I would like to see people buy less and curate their furniture collection more carefully. Investing in a few good pieces, old or new, that will last forever and maintain value is a better approach to living.

It’s time to toss out those grays, cool neutrals and beiges because color is back in a big way.
“We’re definitely seeing a trend toward warmer color palettes and more saturated color,” says Chuck Chewning, owner and principal designer of Charles H. Chewning Interiors. “People are ready for a change. They’re tired of the looks we’ve had in the past few years, so they’re a little more brave to venture into color and pattern.”
On the more conservative side, this means warmer, earthier neutrals and subtle purples like lavender and lilac replacing gray as the go-to base — offering a touch more character while maintaining that clean, contemporary look.
In this vein, Lukejohn Dickson, co-owner and director of business development at full-service design company LaSOURCE, suggests Farrow & Ball’s Hopper Head, a rich, dark charcoal, and School House White, a warm, creamy off-white with a timeless feel.

Looking to go all-out maximalist? Interior walls are becoming some of the most sought-after canvases for artists to craft one-of-a-kind masterpieces. “Lately, we’ve been seeing a lot of muralists and people painting murals inside their homes,” says Perez. “Because of SCAD, people are able to find a lot of students that are willing to do murals for pretty inexpensive prices, which is a really nice bonus for being in this area specifically.”

The design world is in the midst of a wallpaper renaissance. And as Jones & Bull
co-owner Robin Napoli puts it, “These are definitely not your grandmother’s wallpapers.” Intricate detailing, unexpected colors and luxurious textures are bringing these classic wallcoverings into the modern age. And like custom murals, the ease of modern wallpaper creation gives adventurous homeowners the freedom to personalize their walls like never before.
“My favorite wall in our shop right now is our ‘Savannah Toile’ wall — a beautiful ode to Savannah in blue and white by local artist Katie Napoli, who just happens to be our daughter,” says Napoli. “The wallpaper highlights the Hamilton-Turner Inn and the fountain in Lafayette Square where Andy and I were married almost 35 years ago. Katie’s toile captured that magical time in our lives and has been a huge hit with customers.”
ELABORATE COVER-UPS
Even luxury fashion houses like Gucci, Versace and Christian Lacroix are tapping into the wallpaper trend, bringing the cool
confidence of haute couture from the runways to not-so-humble abodes.
Geometric patterns can bring an architectural flair to a bland room, while florals imbue interiors with the beauty and organic motion of nature. “It’s taking it up a level, so you’re not just looking at painted sheetrock,” says Chewning. “It almost becomes art itself.”

Fashion fans now have a new avenue for self-expression that will last season after season: this September, Farrow & Ball launched a capsule collection of paint colors and wallpapers with design phenom Christopher John Rogers, whose stratospheric career began with his Savannah College of Art and Design senior collection in 2016.
Titled Carte Blanche, the collection includes eight statement shades, four neutrals and three wallpaper prints, all celebrating Rogers’ signature splashes of color and playful patterns. Louisiana-born Rogers drew inspiration from food and family; a verdant green bears the name Raw Tomatillo for his grandmother’s fried green tomatoes while Au Lait, a versatile neutral, is named for New Orleans’ chicory coffee with milk.

A family abode in Palmetto Bluff’s Camp Eight neighborhood brings the outdoors inside without sacrificing style or comfort

OFF AN EASY-TO-MISS TURN ON OLD PALMETTO BLUFF ROAD is Palmetto Bluff’s Camp Eight neighborhood. The verdant maritime forest and rambling country estates are a pleasant contrast to the in-town neighborhoods for which the 20,000-acre community is typically known. Here, residents are more likely to spot a migrating songbird than a flock of sightseers. For many, this serene setting is the backdrop they’ve long dreamed of — and inspires not only the purchase of undeveloped acreage, but also the design of a home that celebrates the locale.
So was the case for one Camp Eight family who
enlisted Hilton Head, South Carolina-based J. Banks Design Group to bring their dream home to life. Interior designer Lisa Whitley, who worked with the homeowners on a previous residence, was once again their first call. The homeowners then enlisted Bluffton-based architects Amanda Lamb and Lydia DePauw to lead the design and CS Thomas Construction to handle the build.
The homeowners came equipped with a list of items important to them, allowing DePauw and Lamb to jump right in. At the top of the list was making sure there was ample space for the family of five to live comfortably.

Surprisingly, the path forward came in the form of a garage. In most homes, Lamb acknowledges, the garage is a necessary evil. Placing the kids’ bedrooms above it, though, solved a multitude of issues. “It worked out great,” Lamb says. “The parents can have their side, [the] boys have their side and [they] meet in the middle in the kitchen and the pantry.”
Inside, Whitley went the extra mile to ensure the home could withstand the daily wear and tear of its residents, both two- and four-legged. “It’s a family home, so we didn’t put anything in that wasn’t indoor-outdoor performance,” Whitley notes.
With three boys and pups at the forefront, versatility was also key. A card table in the sun-filled great room hosts the family’s game nights, the occasional homework assignment and, more often than not, the homeowner’s workspace. A cozy banquette is the family’s favorite place to share an intimate meal, but so too is the more formal dining room.
Next on the wish list? An abundance of natural light. The puzzle, though, was how to orient the home to take advantage of the southern daylight at the front of the lot. “Sometimes there’s a tendency to make everything rear-oriented when you have such a great backyard,” DePauw says.
“The homeowners were open to getting this courtyard scheme developed on the front and creating this really nice sense of entry, so they had great daylight in their great room, dining room and kitchen.”
Creating intentional spaces to showcase the homeowner’s sizable art collection was the next challenge. “We wanted to make sure there were good art walls, which is not always the case with these open floor plan houses,” says Depauw.
Armed with a Dropbox full of every art piece and its dimensions, Whitley and the design team brought the home’s walls to life, space by space. “We were able

to use all of the [owners’] artwork, and nothing felt out of place to me,” Whitley notes. “It feels really good.”
Many of the pieces are sentimental to the family and were commissioned with the help of Whitley’s artistic eye, including a striking painting by Adrian Chu Redmond. “The artwork above the fireplace represents [the homeowners’] family, so each fish is a different family member and has different characteristics,” Whitley says. Two herons, fondly named Max and Emma by the boys, hold court in the dining room — their bold plumage a perfect balance to the space’s elegant silhouettes and neutral palette.
Above the herons, the dining room’s wood ceiling is Whitley’s pièce de résistance. “We wanted the home to feel really serene, to take the feel of what was happening outside and bring in some natural elements on the ceiling,” she says.
To achieve this, Whitley opted to use poplar, a wood species typically reserved for paint. “We culled out the purple and green tones that are natural in that species to try to make it a cleaner grain pattern so we could stain it,” the designer says. “We went through several versions of stain to try and find the right one that wouldn’t be too purple, too green or too blue.”
The extra effort does not go unnoticed. “She pulled off the washed oak look with a poplar budget,” says Lamb. “It’s one of my favorite details in the whole entire house.”
This level of ingenuity translated to the floors too, where warm tones ground the home’s predominately neutral palette. In lieu of an antique fume treatment, local artisan Scott Ziel site-finished the white oak, brushing the boards to enhance the wood’s natural grain.

The outdoor-inspired elements continue through the back of house, where the design team crafted an eye-catching millwork feature that utilizes Dutch lap (also known as cove lap) siding. Reminiscent of Palmetto Bluff ’s Canoe Club bathrooms, Dutch lap features a distinct scooped groove between boards versus shiplap’s more recognizable 90-degree joints.

“I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BUILD A HOUSE FROM THE GROUND UP,” says real estate investor Greg Katsaros, a New Yorker who made Savannah home while his daughter attended Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
For four years, Katsaros kept himself busy designing and building on Habersham Street in collaboration with Alair Homes Savannah and local architect Josh Ward (Ward Preservation + Architecture). “I’ve done many renovation projects with homes and some commercial, but never a new build from the ground up,” Katsaros says.
The resulting home makes a modern statement in the evolving Thomas Square area. In recent years, this hip Savannah corridor has seen residential developments as well as a bevy of restaurants like Cotton & Rye, Shuk Mediterranean and Sweet Patricia’s. “It’s cool to see all these new and renovated homes going up,” says Katsaros about the location. “It’s just good to see the neighborhood growing.”
While designing the home, the team kept a variety of potential buyers in mind. “Savannah has a mix, right?” says Katsaros. “You’ve got a lot of locals, and you’ve got a lot of people that are coming in for school wanting to rent.” For Katsaros, he imagined students or a small family living in the house, and Ward drew up a concept accordingly.
The design itself is simple and efficient, squeezing a lot of function into 1,550 square feet. “As far as the form, it’s pretty straightforward — it’s a two-story, front gable house, which you see a lot of on Thomas Square,” says Ward. The exterior engages the street with a wood-louvered screen porch on each side of the corner lot.
“Being on a corner is always a little bit intimidating because it’s going to be seen from all sides, and people are going to notice it,” says Ward. “You have to really be thoughtful, especially with the facades that are going to be on the street.”
For the contemporary take on a historic exterior, the design team selected high-performance James Hardie Artisan siding — a sought-after resource in limited supply after the pandemic paused production.
“We worked with the team at Guerry Lumber to get what I believe to be the last railcar of the siding in the nation to use on the house,” notes Jessica Leavitt, the chief culture and operations officer for Alair Homes Savannah. “The siding is unique because the material is a bit thicker, making a deeper shadow line on the reveal. It also requires the use of no corner boards so it can have a clean, mitered edge.”

The clean lines continue throughout the home’s airy and industrial interior — an atmosphere created in part by the soaring ceilings and the polished concrete floors covering the entire first level. Katsaros shared his interest in these initial elements with Ward, and the team brought them to life. “Working with Greg was really easy,” says Ward. “As far as our relationship, it was very hands off, and he let me do what I wanted to do.”
The resulting collaboration is a floorplan that flows from inside out, with a dining room and living area that peeks into the nearest side porch. To add to the cool interiors, the home’s kitchen includes quartz countertops, sleek cabinetry from Wilmington Woodworking and Bertazzoni appliances. White-tiled bathrooms complement the home’s minimal yet polished look.

“Looking at the details, I thought about how we could make this house unique and not look too traditional,” says Ward. “There’s plenty of historic examples of traditional houses in Savannah, so if we ever have an opportunity to make them a little bit more fresh or contemporary, we try to do that.”
After the home was completed earlier this year, Katsaros sold the home in late July. The new owner, Ana Kuzmi, thinks of the house as “quite a little gem” in the ever-developing Starland neighborhood.

A husband and wife say “I do” to a longtime dream and stewardship of a Savannah estate

LOVE IS IN THE AIR at HollyOaks on the Marsh, a coveted wedding and luxury event destination and the home of Jay and Stephanie Maupin. Graced with centuries-old live oaks and expansive marsh and river views, the quintessential coastal Georgia estate has been lovingly restored by the couple to its former glory — but not without a great deal of vision, a lot of hard work and a reverance for the those who came before them.
College sweethearts Stephanie and Jay have been married for 32 years. As newlyweds, they imagined owning a wedding venue. “Very early in our marriage we were throwing out ideas about what we would like to do one day,” Stephanie recalls. “I said I would love to own a grand home on the river in Savannah and host weddings — not having an inkling that this would ever happen.”
Together, the couple has turned that dream into a reality. HollyOaks on the Marsh and the Maupins have been hosting weddings since 2020, opening up the home and grounds for no more than 10 special events a year.
“Our home brings such joy to people’s lives,” Stephanie says. “What better business is there to be in?”
Bringing this property back to life and maintaining an event venue has been a true labor of love for the Maupin family. When in town, the couple’s adult son and daughter lend helping hands, and Stephanie’s father, who lives on the property, can be found tending the grounds or directing the wedding trolleys.

The auspicious adventure began in 2018. While hunting for a home with acreage for their horses, the Maupins stumbled upon a “for sale” sign along the side of the road in Savannah’s Grove Point area. Peeking through the wrought iron gates of the property, they were intrigued. The couple looked up the listing and quickly made an appointment and subsequently an offer.
“When we rounded the curve in the driveway we thought, This is it. This might actually happen,” Stephanie recalls.
Although other offers were being entertained — primarily from developers looking to bulldoze the home to build high density housing — the Maupins won out.
“We were the only ones who promised not to tear it down,” Stephanie says. As only the fourth owners of the property, they vowed to save the manor house along with the beautiful 500-year-old trees on the property, thereby ushering in a new chapter for the grande dame.
The circa-1941 house, cottage, horse paddocks and outbuildings were situated on 40 acres with 1,800 linear feet of marshfront and uninterrupted views out to the Grove, Forest and Little Ogeechee rivers. Once an equestrian country home for the Meyer family designed by sought-after Savannah architect John C. LeBey, the spectacular setting, sweeping staircases and grand portico all made the estate well suited for a secluded wedding venue.
However, the house and grounds needed a lot of care before the Maupins could begin hosting guests. “Vines were growing in the windows, and trees were sprouting up through the floorboards,” Stephanie says. “There was stuff everywhere.” Beyond the home, a forgotten pool had turned into a pond full of snapping turtles, bullfrogs and sludge.
It took the Maupins two years to get the house in order and grounds presentable. “You name it, it was redone,” Stephanie says. “The concrete around the portico was crumbling and rebar was sticking out. When it rained, sheets of paint peeled off the house, and the shutters were rotted and barely hanging on.” Jay, a civil engineer, appreciated the solid craftsmanship of the home, despite the disrepair. “She was built really well. You can tell the Meyer family spared no expense. They really put a lot of love in the house.”
Luckily, many of HollyOak’s beautiful interior details were still intact. “So many times, these homes are stripped when they go up for sale,” Stephanie adds. With a team of contractors, the couple restored the massive crown moldings, original wood floors and Art Deco mirrored doorplates imported from France.

A crew removed layers of wallpaper, and every room was painted. In the living room, the fireplace is a showpiece fashioned from Georgian white and pink marble adorned with a center fresco imported from Italy and made especially for the home. A stately secretary that transferred with the house anchors the room, and a commissioned painting of the surrounding marsh by local artist Bellamy Murphy hangs over the sofa.
Across a marble threshold is an adjacent dining room, where an heirloom table accommodates bridal luncheons, corporate events and family dinners. Stephanie added informal, painted Chippendale dining chairs to mix it up. An original floor-toceiling mirror from the ’40s reflects the view of the gardens
and waterways beyond.
The kitchen was the biggest challenge for the couple. “We wanted to keep it in context and maintain the original footprint,” Stephanie says. The space consisted of three separate rooms: the butler’s pantry, the food pantry and the cooking area. Because the house was built during the height of World War II, the pantry walls were made of solid concrete to act as a bomb shelter, if needed.
“We spoke with four different kitchen designers who all wanted to take out the walls and make it a large, modern kitchen,” Stephanie says. Finding someone who would work within the walls took time. “My dream kitchen was finally achieved by Owens Supply Company.” The kitchen is now extremely functional and

loaded with clever storage. Stephanie’s colorful style is evident in the floral Thibaut wallpaper in the butler’s pantry and the Carrara marble and mother-of-pearl tile backsplash above the stove.
Today, the home’s decor is warm and welcoming in a mix of new and old furnishings to suit both special events and the Maupin family’s daily life. “It strikes a good balance, but it is designed to my taste,” Stephanie says.
As for Jay, the hearth room is his favorite spot in the house. Apparently, the original owners liked it, too. The Maupins learned the Meyers took the original hand-painted fireplace surround with them when they moved. The current mantel and surround — likely installed by the second owners — sports green marble and equestrian motif tiles in keeping with the room’s handsome decor. The warm wood walls are paneled in pine from trees felled on the property. “This is where the groom and groomsmen congregate,” Jay says.

A winding staircase in the entry hall provides the perfect photo opportunity for a bride and her entourage. Upstairs, the spacious bridal suite, which was once a sleeping porch, is outfitted with an 18th-century French daybed for lounging — a treasure the homeowners found in the attic — hair-and-makeup stations, and a retro-style refrigerator stocked with Champagne. Meanwhile, groomsmen also can camp out in the oldest building on the property — a restored cottage dating back to 1927.
The history of the house is indeed majestic, but the manicured grounds with specimen trees, ivy-covered Savannah Grey brick walls and sweeping lawns leading to the marsh can only be described as magical.
While clearing away the brush and vines overtaking the property, the couple discovered heirloom varieties of gardenias, crepe myrtles and camellias. “Over time, she has unveiled herself to us,” Stephanie says of the hidden gardens, which include a circular side garden and an elegant English garden at the back of the house.
One of the biggest blessings of this venture, according to Stephanie, has been opening the gates and doors and making anyone feel welcome.
“We feel we are the caretakers,” Stephanie says. “It was here before us; it will last after us. We are doing our best to take care of her and bring her back. We just love sharing it.”

In July 2023, Corcoran Austin Hill Realty agents set a new record for the most expensive residential property ever sold in Savannah’s Historic District. Listed and sold with Ridley Stallings and Melissa Hall Rowan, 513 Whitaker St. changed hands for $6.16 million.
Completed at the turn of the 20th century by acclaimed architect G.L.
