EDITOR’S LETTER
SAVANNAH, THE LOWCOUNTRY and the Coastal Empire are full of endlessly beautiful places to say “I do” — yet with so many details to manage, a wedding can feel like one monumental to-do list. Thankfully, we’re here to help! In this issue of Southern Coastal Weddings, we’re bringing you stunning looks and locations, helpful planning guides, and even a bridal beauty boot camp to kick your prep into high gear. My role as a weddings magazine editor in a sought-after market means I get to experience fabulous venues and vendors firsthand (and share my discoveries with you, of course). So, it may come as a surprise that my own wedding last fall veered so far off script: my husband and I exchanged our vows at the edge of a dormant volcano in the village of Imerovigli, on the Greek island of Santorini, more than 6,000 miles from home. The reasons for Greece could fill a book, but here are a few universal truths I learned along the way: MAKE NEW FRIENDS, BUT KEEP THE OLD.
We’re lucky to live in a time when any idea can be explored and any conundrum crowdsourced in a matter of minutes. Sometimes, though, when you’re stuck in a swirl, there’s nothing quite so reassuring as a check-in with a friend or relative who knows you through and through. (Many thanks to my own speed-dial crew — you know who you are.)
W H E N I N D O U B T, GO TIMELESS.
I went painstakingly blonde last April and ended up returning to my (brunette) roots a week before my wedding. I wanted to recognize the person I saw in my photos, and while the blonde was fabulous, it wasn’t quite me. A word to the wise: your

wedding year is not the time for drastic hair moves. A WEDDING IS SACRED. A W E D D I N G I S A L S O A PA R T Y.
No matter your religious leanings, there’s something undeniably powerful about standing up, holding hands and promising to take care of each other forever. It’s bound to be one of the happiest days of your lives, and I don’t think I realized until my own wedding was staring me in the face that it didn’t just belong to me and my husband. Since we had a private elopement
(and a raucous party in Savannah a few months later to make up for it), we asked our families and close friends to write us letters that we read on our wedding night, after the last sips of ouzo. I will never forget how surrounded by love we felt — and shouldn’t every wedding be that way? Now, if I could just find someone to translate my wedding certificate …

You’re in love, you’re engaged … and you’re lucky enough to be getting married on the Southern coast. Planning a Southern wedding means taking those special vows in a place steeped in history and tradition, but that doesn’t mean you need to rule out all the fun and creativity of a modern affair. Believe it or not, in this age of unconventional venues, wedding hashtags and an ever-evolving cache of fads, it’s still possible to find balance. The good news is that the best new trends are all about regional touches and personalization, which means you can keep those traditional aspects that speak to your personality while still elevating your event with of-themoment touches.
Still, it can feel a bit overwhelming, so we’re bringing you the inspiration, experts and a few great tips to help you mix and match your way to a day that’s uniquely yours.
Saying “yes” to the perfect dress can take time and research. This year, old is new again in the form of fresh embellishments, traditional palettes and statement details. Clean lines are back thanks to last year’s royal wedding and the simplicity of that now-famous bateau neckline on Meghan Markle’s wedding dress. Brides are still favoring traditional white or ivory gowns, while bridesmaid palettes are staying soft in hues of crème, rose gold, soft pink and subdued blue. As Aubrianna Brown, lead stylist at BleuBelle Bridal, puts it, “Classic elegance is back.” “Go with what makes you feel beautiful,” says Nicole Mason, owner of Ivory & Beau. “It’s easy to get hung up on a certain style or trend, but on your day that’s what really matters.” While matching bridesmaid dresses are no longer taboo, Katharine Josephson, owner of Bella Bridesmaids Savannah, recommends giving your bridesmaids at least a few specific guidelines beyond color. “Too many choices can be overwhelming. We love it when brides do their research before coming in,” says Josephson. “Photos or a Pinterest board can really help our designers maximize time.”
DEFINING FOCUS: PHOTOGRAPHY Long after the big day, you’ll be savoring the pictures, so it’s important to give them some thought well in advance. “Authenticity is key,” says Callie Beale of Callie Beale Photography. “Couples aren’t looking for forced poses anymore, they want their personality to shine through.” Blame it on Instagram — Savannah photographers are fielding requests for a

Even the picture content itself can add personal expression, says Nicki O’Connell, an accessories and shoe designer inside the Mary Elizabeth’s Bridal. “A little detail like a custom embellished high-top shoe can let the bride feel comfortable and become an unexpected photo highlight.” With so much to think about on the big day, it’s no wonder many couples now opt
to do a “first look” rather than wait until the aisle to see each other. “That quiet moment often helps calm any pre-ceremony jitters and for some couples, it can be the only unencumbered moment of the day,” says Beale. Of course, scenery still plays a major role in any Lowcountry photography. “There is nothing more classic and stunning then a bride and groom under a beautiful live oak with the sunset shining through the moss,” says Beale.

This year, the aesthetic of the royal wedding has had major impact on wedding décor as well. Savannah planners and florists have noted a shift from the minimalist trend of the past few years toward largerthan-life floral installations, dramatic chandeliers and floral archways. “Peonies, ranunculus, garden roses and dahlias continue to be popular choices,” says Vicki Sepielli, owner and designer of Kiwi Fleur. “Many brides use garland or eucalyptus down the center of the table, but no matter what you choose, we always recommend seeing the flowers in person before placing an order.” John Davis, owner of John Davis Florist, agrees. “Most wedding boards and Pinterest pages are staged sets, which is 20

When it comes to invitations, convention is still king. Even in this era of save-thedate videos and digital RSVPs, Savannah brides are still paying postage — usually on a formal invitation with traditional wording. One way to add a hint of modern flair is a custom monogram, which allows couples to create a unique insignia drawing inspiration from their venue, family crest or personal interests. “The invitation sets the tone for your wedding,” says Emily McCarthy, owner and designer of Emily McCarthy Shoppe + Studio. “Today’s couples are creating a custom brand with their monogram and carrying it through from the invitation and stationery to their linens and china.” When it comes to registering for gifts, these days it’s the norm to do so both online and in person — and grooms are more involved than ever before. “We find that men are often the chefs in the family,” says Beverly Reynolds of The Cottage Shop. “They are much more involved than ten or fifteen years ago, when registering fell only to the bride.”
great for inspiration, but brides should consider their budget and venue and remember that flowers can look different in person.” Bucking the long-held Southern style of informal seating and food stations, traditional seated affairs are making a comeback. Place settings for seated dinners are more formal, and favor a calm palette of white, blush and soft blue. “One contemporary twist is that velvet accents are being incorporated yearround,” says Tara Skinner, owner and lead designer of Tara Skinner Weddings & Events. “From groomswear to table linens, touches of velvet add texture and interest.” Custom crests are making a major appearance at the reception, too. From the band’s backdrops to cocktail napkins and

E AT, D R I N K & B E M A R R I E D Whether you’re going for seated courses or station-style dining, regional classic comfort foods like shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes remain as popular as ever, but caterers are receiving more requests to source homegrown foods and recognizable Savannah brands. “From local cheese to Savannah Bee Company honey, whenever possible, we go local because it’s fresher and our couples ask for it,” says James Monahan, chef de cuisine of 22 Square at the Andaz. According to Wendy Armstrong, chef
and owner of Thrive Catering, Savannah’s only certified green caterer, “Couples are mixing regional cuisine with world cuisines that are part of their family’s culture.” The addition of late-night snack tables or after-party munchies offer even more options for creativity. From buildyour-own-burger bars to surprise food trucks, these modern touches keep the party going. The signature cocktail has also gotten a face-lift. While the mint julep will always be a beloved Southern staple, ideas like “his” and “hers” cocktails highlight the happy couple’s personalities and preferences while limiting the bar tab. “His might be a Jack and Coke and hers something sweeter like a Champagne cocktail with a splash of cranberry

GIFT BAGS & GOODIES. Gift bags have become more than just a way to welcome out-of-town guests or recognize your bridal party — they set the weekend’s first impression and are a great opportunity to introduce your guests to your locale. Along with the necessary amenities like bottled water, maps and mints, adding special extras like an organic lotion from Nourish or a custom spice blend from the Salt Table lets you share a little local love that lasts long past the weekend’s festivities. Customized bridal party gift bags are a hot trend right now because they give the couple a way to recognize their bridal crew. From customized “Will you be my
bridesmaid?” champagne labels to koozies and T-shirts, custom gifts are a keepsake that will be long remembered. One Lowcountry favorite for gifts is the leather goods shop Satchel. Their Betty clutch and Elizabeth wallet are go-to bridal party gifts and can be worn on the wrist or across the body. From the Savannah’s Candy Kitchen to personalized stemware at the Emily McCarthy Shoppe + Studio, a stroll through any of Savannah’s retail districts makes it easy to shop local and stay personal. In the end, it’s all about choice. Marriage was created on a foundation of tradition but has evolved thanks in large part to modern inspiration. As you look ahead to your wedding day, remember that it should feel a little like love itself — so take a deep breath, trust your gut and above all, enjoy the ride! SCW

SIX MONTHS PRIOR
Schedule a visit with your esthetician If you have any major skin concerns, this is the time to consider professional remedies. According to Kelly Temple, owner of Kelly Temple Day Spa, estheticians need enough time to make sure you don’t have any reactions to products, especially if you tend to have sensitive skin. “If you’re having more serious concerns such as acne,” Temple says, “I would recommend starting treatments as early as a year before your wedding date and coming as often as every four weeks.”

FIRST COMES LOVE, then comes marriage … wait, that’s not right. First comes love, then comes a dozen or more beauty-related appointments for the big day! With all the time and energy that goes into planning a wedding, finding the dress, finalizing floral arrangements, cake samplings and seating charts, it is easy to forget about your beauty routine. Have no fear, we’re here to get you in fighting shape — I mean, wedding shape. Think of this as your beauty boot camp. Whether you consider yourself high or low maintenance, wedding prep is a personal choice about time, effort and cost. That said, your wedding is arguably the most photographed event of your life, so if there was ever a time to go all out, it might be now.
Eating healthy and being active are good for your overall health, but now it’s time to get down to business. Betsy Hunter Hughes of Total Health and Body by Betsy is an integrative nutritional health coach who helps you to create a supportive nutritional plan for your overall goals. If you’re looking to tone up for the wedding day, start six months out from the time you’ll have alterations done. Personal trainer to the stars, Drew Edmonds of Train Me 24/7 can help you get as close to your “day of” shape before a single pin is placed. For alterations, leave it to Adrienne Cronberger, owner of Stitch.
Lock in your hair and makeup artist You certainly don’t want to be worrying about last-minute hair and makeup trials, so nail down your favorite local professional ahead of time. One of Savannah’s top hair and makeup artists, Tyler Lively, recommends scheduling a trial and day-of booking six months to a year in advance to allow time for any game-plan changes. “I always advise brides to think of their wedding day as if they were considering it from 10 years in the future, and make decisions based on what you know you will continue to love as time passes.” The more prepared you are beforehand, the more present you’ll be able to be as the wedding approaches. “Being a bride is so special and intimate,” Lively says, “and the preparation determines the outcome!”

Let’s talk brows Have you looked at your eyebrows lately? If you have never had your eyebrows waxed, tinted, or shaped your next appointment may need to be with a brow specialist. Eyebrows are one of the most prominent facial features, and a trained professional can help you find the perfect shape that compliments your face. One increasingly popular eyebrow enhancement, microblading, uses a semi-permanent tattoo technique to create the illusion of fuller brows — but you have to plan accordingly. Jessica Mock, owner of Southern Sugaring, recommends receiving the initial service 12 weeks prior to your wedding date, due to the nature of the healing process. “Microblading requires four to six weeks recovery time for your skin to fully heal and regenerate,” she says, “and because most people require two treatments, each session must fully heal for makeup-free brows on your wedding day.”
The countdown is on, so it’s time for another check-in with your esthetician. This is also a good time to be consistent with your skincare products and keep it clean and simple. Lowcountry-based Maya Chia (available at mayachia.com) offers high performance skin care products with a chia oil base that soothes and suits any skin type. From supercharged serums to a range of highlighters, Maya Chia is the perfect addition to your pre-wedding routine. THREE WEEKS PRIOR
Smile bright
ONE MONTH PRIOR
Wedding day glow A bride’s glow comes from many things – the lighting, the love in the air, and sometimes an assist from a fabulous spray tan. Trying out a new spray tan or self-tanner in the days before your wedding day is risky, so head to BeetTan a few months out to experiment with a plant-derived sun-kissed look. Owner Michelle Peth has spent years perfecting her all-natural and organic tanning solution and product line made from beets, and she’ll travel to you if you’re in a pinch for time.
Bold brows and lashes Dayna Anderson from Wax and Wane Waxing Salon calls brow and lash tinting one of her favorite services. “It’s especially great for brides (and grooms!) going on a sunny honeymoon who don’t want to worry about their mascara running,” she says. “The tint we use for brows and lashes adheres to hair only, not to skin, for a natural look.” Lash extensions are a great alternative to eyelash strips: eyelash extensions are a process in which individual eyelash supplements are applied to your natural lash to give you volumized and gorgeous wedding eyes. Book your eyelash extension appointment with Glow Medical Spa + Beauty Boutique.

There will be endless opportunities to smile on your big day, so your pearly whites better be camera ready! Booking a professional cleaning will help to remove plaque and stains and get your teeth ready to whiten. Whether you choose an at-home whitening kit, or professional whitening procedure, start about three weeks before your wedding date. Savannah dentist Dr. Mark Dye recommends the Opalescence take-home whitening kit, which is customized to your liking.
Face and body boost

Fine-tune your hair color Two weeks before your wedding is the perfect time to add in subtle highlights or touch up your roots at JW Salon, located in the heart of downtown Savannah. This gives the dye a chance to settle, but it’ll still look fresh for the big day. REMINDER: this isn’t the moment for drastic changes or experiments with cut and color. Stick with what makes you feel the most confident!
Sea Salt & Sugar, a chic and sustainable nail oasis in Savannah, co-owner Christy Cole recommends a gel manicure for brides because it holds up all the way through the honeymoon. “Searching for bridal nail art on Instagram or Pinterest is always fun,” Cole says. “We love to get sent inspiration photos and do a trial run before the big day to make sure your bridal nails are exactly what you’re dreaming of.”
In your final week of wedding prep, take some time to relax with a specialty treatment to give your face and body a little boost. Debra Brill from Remedy SOS recommends Dermaflash therapy, a procedure that removes vellus hair, the fine short hairs on your face, and 10 layers of dead skin cells. In other words, it’s a deep exfoliation process that brings forth new skin cells as it removes peach fuzz — a great foundation for your makeup on the big day! Follow that up with a hydration treatment using hyaluronic acid and a brightening serum filled with antioxidants — your skin will look fresh and youthful. For the body, Brill advises brides to try her salon’s sun-kissed body treatment, which includes a full-body dry buff to remove dead skin and treating the new skin underneath with a natural glow self-tanner. “Your skin will look healthy, fresh, and glowing with the optional added shimmer from our body oil,” Brill says. Wax on You want smooth, non-irritated skin for your wedding day and honeymoon to follow! Seventy-two hours before your wedding is a good time to get waxed. Our friends at Vitali Medspa say this time frame allows your skin to breathe before makeup or sun exposure. Smooth skin makes for a great blank canvas — and bonus, no unsightly hairs will show up in your wedding photos.

THE DETAILS
Don’t Go Crazy,
Get Organized! By JESSICA LEIGH LEBOS
IT SOUNDS SO SIMPLE: Someone proposes, someone says “yes!” and then it’s time to plan a wedding. Yet with what seems like a billion decisions to make — setting a date, choosing a venue, finding a dress and feeding family and friends, for starters — just thinking about your dream day can become overwhelming. Then there are the “what ifs” and wild cards: What happens if it rains? What if the caterer bails? What if Uncle Gary goes rogue during his toast? While it’s important to think ahead, all that worrying can turn joyful anticipation into nail-biting anxiety. That’s why even the most detail-oriented brides and grooms find that 26

hiring a wedding planner is the easiest way to stay sane during the countdown. Having an objective professional to help you narrow down choices and head off disasters scales back the pressure and can save money in the long run. (They may even be able to handle Uncle Gary.) Even if you go it alone, keeping organized is key. Sure, no one can control the weather or foresee every snag, but taking stock of certain touchpoints helps you stay focused on making beautiful memories. We asked local experts for a few tips to make planning your big day a piece of cake — or cupcakes, or cake pops, or whatever new trend your heart desires.
TRUST THE PROCESS EVERY PROFESSIONAL we spoke with shared a similar piece of advice: Don’t try to do it all at once. “Just because you’ve gotten engaged, doesn’t mean you have to have a wedding in two weeks,” says Alysse Sweeney, owner of Design Studio South on Broughton Street. “If you’re thinking about invitations, centerpieces and bridesmaids’ dresses at the same time, it’s going to be overwhelming. Trust the process and know everything will get done. There’s a cadence to it all.” To manage all the moving pieces, start by writing things down, making guest lists, and creating vision boards. Give yourself plenty of time to interview vendors and tour venues, but not too much time. “If you start planning too early, you’re going to end up changing things anyway,” cautions Sweeney. “Our clients tend to secure our services six to eight months out, and we don’t even begin the design process until six months before because you’re going to attend other events and see things you like, and trends will change.”
Must-have shoes!
T H E F I NA L C OU N T D OW N AS YOUR WEDDING weekend approaches, remember that your guests may be in town for a few days surrounding the day. Planning exciting activities can help new in-laws bond and help your friends and family relax before the main event. A bridesmaids’ spa day at award-winning Spa Bleu or a group pedicure at Polished Beauty Lounge is a great way to help everyone de-stress. To help your guests narrow down the myriad options of Savannah’s bustling downtown eating and drinking scene, keep everyone interested and in line with Get-AClue Bar Crawls, which divides participants into teams to solve puzzles and enjoy adult beverages at some of the city’s finest establishments. For non-alcoholic fun, a flower crown party hosted by Fetes de Fleurs can make the weekend blossom with joy, and a crowd of visitors always thrills to a ghost tour. Escape rooms are also popular entertainment adventures, bringing groups together to decipher mysteries, outwit dreaded pirates and duck zombies before the timer sounds. Such professionally curated crafts and games give opportunity for all ages and abilities to join in the pre-wedding excitement. “We have a lot of bachelorette parties where mothers and aunties want to participate but may be hesitant to down shots of Fireball,” says Escape Savannah hostess Becca Cook. “It’s great to be able to include older family members who might not necessarily want to participate in the late night festivities.”

THE DETAILS
T H E B I G D AY YOUR WEDDING DAY is finally here! You’ve made the choices, checked the boxes and dialed in the details — and even so, chances are, something will still go wrong. The experts’ advice? “Don’t stress!” implores Sophie Longwater, lead coordinator of Dapper Events. As a seasoned wedding planner, Longwater knows that it’s not unusual to be chasing down certain details until the last minute. While she acknowledges that it may not be possible to have a completely stress-free wedding, it’s more important to let the hired professionals take the reins so you can enjoy the day. “I create an hour-by-hour timeline for each event and walk through the entire day with my client to make sure everything is accounted for,” she says, reiterating that careful organization can stave off any chaos caused by unexpected surprises.
IT’S OK TO GO SMALLER

FOR MANY COUPLES, the idea of a large wedding feels like an emotional burden rather than a happy celebration. Leaving the trappings behind to get married is always an option, though elopement doesn’t have to mean letting go of tradition or meaningful details. Some companies cater specifically to small events and spontaneity, making the less-complicated path even easier. “We get a lot of calls from people who were planning big weddings and it just got out of control,” says Karen Norian, East Coast customer experience manager of Simply Eloped. “They end up choosing to recite vows in a smaller venue or at a destination, and we can give recommendations and handle permitting as well as other ‘pressure points.’” While there are myriad reasons for paring down the vow ceremony — sidestepping uncomfortable family situations, or saving money for a honeymoon or a home — couples still want a meaningful, memorable event. Simply Eloped also coordinates photographers, officiants and other essentials, making “escape nuptials” a stress-free affair. “Couples are thinking on their own terms nowadays,” continues Norian. “The beauty of a simplistic wedding is that it strips away the expectations about what a wedding should be.”
H A P P I L Y EVER AFTER NOW THAT YOU and your boo are tied for good, it’s time for the honeymoon. Though websites and online packages make it easy to research exotic locales and plan a trip, travel agencies like Four Seasons Travel can still get exclusive deals and share deep knowledge not necessarily found in the comments section. A bit of housekeeping is also in order. Even though it’s only been worn once, your wedding dress will likely need some attention — and the sooner, the better. Trains and hems can be caked with dirt from outdoor and beach weddings, and many an ivory gown has seen a red wine stain or two. Plan to get your dress to a professional cleaner as soon as possible so it can be displayed, or even passed on one day. “The longer it sits, the harder it is to get cleaned,” says Lisa Curry of Curry Dry Cleaners, a local business with plenty of experience cleaning, pressing and preserving wedding dresses. “But we can work small miracles.” Your wedding day happens so fast that you might feel like you missed some of it. Keepsakes are a wonderful way to look back, though not everyone wants to display a large bridal bouquet forever. Savannah fine artist Mary Margaret Monsees launched M Studio in the fall of 2018 to give brides a way to document their floral arrangements in paint. Working from professional photos or even an iPhone snapshot, Monsees uses vibrant acrylics on handmade, textured paper from India. She then delivers the unique piece of art in a sturdy frame that can stand on a vanity or hang on a wall, capturing the beauty of the blooms without the bulk. “Even with the latest technology, there’s not really an easy method to preserve bridal bouquets,” says Monsees. “This is a way to depict all the color and freshness forever.”
Dream Honeymoon
R E M E M B E R T O B R E AT H E IT’S EASY to get swept up in a flood of decisions big and small, but remember that you’ve already made the most important choice: To marry your favorite person. So take a deep breath, and trust that even if your event unfolds with a little rain or a rowdy relative, the outcome will be yours to enjoy for a lifetime. Who knows? You may even learn to delight in the details. SCW

Location notes: Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, situated seven miles north of downtown Savannah, Georgia, is the perfect place to observe waterfowl, reptiles and birds, hike or bike, and explore more than 30,000 acres of freshwater marshes, tidal rivers and creeks. Though it proved to be a dreamy backdrop for this editorial spread, it’s not currently available for event rentals — but it is a great place to visit or send your guests. HOW DO WE MAKE YOUR WEDDING SPECIAL? By creating a photo-booth experience that tops all others. We offer laughs, smiles and fun during your reception by giving your guests an opportunity to make and take a memento home to remember your special day.
94
SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION
HOW DOES IT WORK? We can change the backgrounds of your photo-booth images to put your guests on the beach, in Paris or a location special to you and your spouse. You can add digital props, like a tiara or speech bubbles, with a touch of a finger on a giant 42” or our 12” touchscreen. Your guests can print 4” x 6” photographs on the spot or send pictures directly to their social media or via email or text right from the kiosk!

John Davis Owner John Davis Florist 912.233.6077 johndavisflorist.com @johndavisflorist
SOUTHERN CHIC John Davis makes sure each wedding he creates has its own personal sense of style. From creating flower and boxwood walls to designing table arrangements with a mix of succulents and indigenous flowers displayed in your grandmother’s crystal bowl are just some of his signature traits. Adding floral or local greenery to guest chairs, gazebos and even the bar area are hot trends right now! John Davis knows every aspect of a wedding or special event is an Instagram moment, and he really takes the time to learn as much as he can about the wedding party so he can add those unforgettable touches.
ADVICE TO BRIDES Secure your venues for the ceremony and reception, then talk floral and décor. Wedding flowers can be done on a budget. One beautiful orchid can be as lovely as a full arrangement. When people ask who is doing the flowers, let it be John Davis Florist! BUY FLOWERS -

Mallory Adams Owner and founder of The Clyde Venue 223 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Savannah, GA 31401 | 912.344.0064 theclydevenue.com | @theclydevenue WHAT INSPIRED THE CLYDE? Savannah needed a larger indoor venue with a modern feel. I wanted an elegant canvas amenable to bringing ideas to life without limitations.
KATIE MCG EE
HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE NAME? I named it after my dad and late grandfather, Donald Clyde Adams Jr. and Sr. hoping the space shares their spirit — strong, family-oriented and a bit old-fashioned! WHAT SHOULD COUPLES CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING A WEDDING? Book local vendors with a genuine interest in your event. Boutique venues like us pay attention to the small details, listen to you and make dreams happen!
Marie Bramlett Wicked Lulu 340 Eisenhower Drive | Savannah, GA 31406 404.514.6956 | wickedlulu.com @wickedlulu Marie Bramlett - Wicked Lulu
WHAT HAS EXPERIENCE TAUGHT YOU? Keeping an open mind will wield the best results. Most brides have an idea of what they want. But what they want isn’t always what’s best or possible. Weather, hair type and other factors play a part in end results.
KAT IE M CG E E
WHAT’S THE SECRET TO A SUCCESSFUL BRIDAL BUSINESS? Utilizing other professionals. I often call on other artists for assistance in handling larger parties, or give them as references to brides when I can’t accommodate them.

WHAT TREND ARE YOU SEEING? More polished looks. It was all about soft, romantic, tousled styles for a while, but polished glamour is on the rise.

Candice Carver Owner, Head Chef Cha Bella 912.790.7888 cha-bella.com @chabellasavannah
THE CHA BELLA DIFFERENCE The heart and soul that we put into every event and dish that we serve. Our team works tirelessly to make everything fresh and from scratch, which translates into beautiful food no matter its simplicity or complexity.
MY MISSION IS TO Go above and beyond for anyone who books with us. Event planning is stressful to most people, and if I can take some of that stress off of their shoulders while giving them unforgettable food and experiences, I consider it a total success.
MY FAVORITE MEAL TO PREPARE Pasta! Pasta is how I relax. From making the dough to rolling out the endless shapes and the different flavors you can combine with it, there is nothing better. It is (in my opinion) the best comfort food!
I AM THANKFUL FOR My other half, Michael, who works long days and nights right beside me so we can achieve our dreams. My team both in and out of the kitchen who, when presented with my many crazy ideas, says we can do it and gets it done!
A LESSON I’VE LEARNED I cannot do everything myself. You have to lean on others and the knowledge that they have. Also, it takes a team, or family as we call it, to keep everything running smoothly and truly enjoy ourselves. SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

Set the Scene Get to know the lay of the land and weather — and the licenses and laws By HANNAH BUCHMAN & BETTY DARBY
S O U T HE R N C OA STAL WEDDING S covers some of the most beautiful geography in the world. Though each area of the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire bears its own distinctive mark, they all share certain signatures: stately oaks draped with romantic Spanish moss, preserved historic structures and a cultural reverence for the art of hospitality. Beaufort, South Carolina, in upper Beaufort County, is awash with romance and history, a quintessential small Southern town. At the southern end of Beaufort County, cross the bridge to Hilton Head Island, where even the gas stations have a posh patina. This island is an ode to meticulously planned high-end residences and manicured golf courses all coming together with understated elegance. Bluffton is Hilton Head’s mainland sister — an eclectic community with an artist’s soul. Travel over the Savannah River, and you’re in Chatham County, Georgia. Savannah’s massive historic district and tree-filled squares are top-ofmind when it comes to planning a wedding here, but Savannah-area brides are spoiled for choice — beach weddings on Tybee Island, historic venues well away from the bustle of the city and even rustic farm settings make the Hostess City a versatile site for any celebration. About an hour to the south, you’ll find Glynn County, Georgia, home of the Golden Isles — Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, Sea Island and Little St. Simons Island, plus the mainland town of Brunswick, which offers a picturesque historic district. It’s easy to see why these islands inspired poet Sidney Lanier’s famed “Marshes of Glynn” — they offer an array of wedding venues, from elegant and exclusive villas to earthy, exquisite driftwood beaches.
