PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT Local bride Valerie Vance is a pianist at Savannah Smiles, so she’s no stranger to the spotlight. She and her groom, Joshua Gabriel, commissioned photographer Teresa Earnest for not one but three engagement shoots in four local venues: the beach at Hilton Head Island, The Public Kitchen and Bar, The Bohemian Hotel and the Top Deck at the Cotton Sail. Now, that’s a lot of memories!

No matter how many weddings I cover—no matter how many brides and experts I interview or how long I live in this stunning nuptial destination—I’m always surprised by how much more there is to learn about this monumental life event and the artistry that surrounds it. Take, for example, the engagement shoot. Sure, who wouldn’t want model-quality photos to post on their wedding website? I’ve even seen some couples use the images on their save-the-dates and even in their wedding décor. But I needed local wedding photographer (and Savannah personality) Teresa Earnest to sit down with me and explain that the real purpose of the engagement shoot is to practice for the main event. “You need to feel comfortable with the camera—and with your photographer,” the bubbly redhead assures me. “And trust me—your groom needs to practice what to do with his hands. The engagement photos are a chance to make sure that your wedding photos are relaxed and natural enough to show how happy you really are.” She has a point. In the end, after your pedicab or Bentley pulls away from the best night of your life, all that will be left are the photos. You’ll need them to get through the dark nights, when you can’t believe you married someone who would make that hurtful comment or buy that brand of trash bag. “Marriage is work,” they tell us, and it’s true. All the more reason for the wedding to be fun. Put the work in the hands of Savannah’s experts, and concentrate on storing up enough memories—enough magic—to get you through the better and the worse. There’s no place like Savannah. That’s why there’s nothing like a Savannah wedding. When I say that, people often think I’m talking about our venues: the live-oak-lined paths leading to charming chapels; the breezy beaches, lush gardens and stunning Gothic halls. offers some timely tips to make the most of your wedding budget. If you have an unlimited wedding budget, read no further! Savannah boasts a wealth of talented event designers who can help you achieve the wedding of your wildest dreams. But if you’re like most brides, you’re already armed with a dollar figure—and a Pinterest account filled to bursting with beautiful images. Pinterest and magazines like this one are full of captivating ideas, but few of them provide the pricing information required for such fabulous fêtes. Online budget worksheets list every possible element, but few pair them with

informative dollar amounts or percentages. And the cost of a wedding can vary dramatically from one city to the next. So here are some things to consider as you crunch numbers and start planning your Savannah wedding.
The Guest List I recommend that brides prepare to spend a minimum of $200 per guest. Typically half of that goes toward food and drink; the rest pays for the photographer, planner, flowers, entertainment, venue, transportation and other needs.
Keep this number in mind as you make the guest list. As you add each name, ask yourself, “Would I buy this person dinner and drinks on a random day?” If the answer is no, then strongly reconsider inviting them to your wedding. To keep your guest list manageable, divide your budget by $200. For example, if your budget is $20,000, that’s 100 guests. You may get away with inviting 120 because about 20 percent will decline (40 percent if your guests

Here are a few of my favorite ways to get the day of your dreams without a financial nightmare: Season With Care. Be aware of the prime times and seasons for weddings, and don’t be surprised if they are more expensive. In Savannah, March through May and September through November are the most popular months. Saturdays are always in demand, and holiday weekends like Memorial Day often cost extra—not just for the wedding, but also for the flights and hotel rooms for any out-of-town guests. Bloom Responsibly. If flowers aren’t your top priority, choose color instead of variety. Peonies are the most popular wedding flowers—and usually the most expensive. They also are only in peak season a few months a year. (May, June and July typically have the biggest blooms.) Give your floral designers some freedom. Tell them your color preference and flower style (ruffled, sleek, rustic or wild?) and let them use their expertise to get you the most bang for your buck. Compare Apples to Apples. Outdoor weddings are lovely, but often full of hidden expenses. Few outdoor venues are equipped with tents, tables, chairs and other necessities. These items have to be rented, and sometimes even catering equipment needs to be delivered. It’s also wise to inquire about pest control—and book some of your own. Before you choose an outdoor venue over an indoor space, be sure to factor in all costs. Visit Mixed-use Spaces. Venues that have their own food and bar typically are less expensive in the long run. They usually have a food and

beverage minimum you have to meet, but there is little to no room rental fee. More often than not, tables, chairs, and linens are included. Also consider a venue where you can have the ceremony and reception in one place. It’s convenient for the guests and you won’t need to provide any transportation. Timing is Everything. Consider doing a “first look” photo session before the ceremony. You’ll get some of the sweetest images, and you’ll be able to shorten or forego the cocktail hour. Also, you may want to skip the “grand exit.” This will not only save on confetti, sparklers, and ribbon streamers—it will also save you an hour of paid photographer time. Do a “grand entrance” instead, but not all venues allow sparklers or confetti, so be sure to ask in advance. Rent, Don’t Buy. Rented items are better quality, and you don’t have to arrange pickup and delivery. Besides, who wants a wedding’s worth of stuff after the big day? No one needs 20 matching tablecloths, and dry cleaning will cost as much as the linens did to begin with. Get Professional Help. Hire a planner, not just a day-of coordinator. Have someone with you from the beginning to help you save money and time. Even if you decide to do most of the work on your own, ask if your favorite planner has an hourly consulting rate. That way, you can ask a local professional specific questions in a pinch, instead of spending hours on wedding forums.

A budget is much like a diet, and it’s more fun to have a spinach salad followed by decadent chocolate cake than grilled chicken with steamed broccoli. S

“Ever since Kim Kardashian rocked a long-sleeved wedding dress when marrying Kanye West, sleeves have been all the rage,” says Nicole Schwalge of Ivory and Beau, citing the reality star’s look as the perfect blend of traditional and trendy. Flood adds, “The update we’re seeing to this classic look is the coupling of the conventional with the daring. An extended engagement proves ideal for a Charlotte couple planning the perfect springtime-in-Savannah celebration.
Ashley and Chris Granum always knew that they’d return to Savannah—the location of their first vacation together—to make their vows. They had fallen in love with the unrivaled beauty of the Hostess City in the springtime. Blooming azaleas, moss-draped live oaks and lush historic squares promised the ideal backdrop for the outdoor fairytale wedding they wanted.
Making Time A destination wedding also made sense for the Charlotte couple, whose families would already be traveling from Michigan and Ohio. The only problem was having enough time to plan. They got engaged in November, so a springtime wedding would allow them only a few months to book the right venues and vendors—from several hundred miles away. Rather than rush to the altar, Ashley and Chris gave themselves 18 leisurely months to plan the April affair. “I will never regret that,” the bride enthuses. “I never felt rushed or stressed.”

Ashley initially wanted gold cakes, but when she sent some pictures to Tammy Acosta of Lowcountry Confections for inspiration, the innovative baker outshined her expectations, creating three cakes to reflect the wedding’s blush palette, soft florals and gold accents. A delicate ruffle cake even echoed the textures of Ashley’s layered linens. “These details made everything look very cohesive,” notes designer Tara Skinner of Posh Petals and Pearls.
A Sense of Touch
The bride, whose favorite “color” is “sparkle,” fell in love with a set of textured gold and champagne chevron-print linens. To temper the glam with the ease that reflects the couple’s personality, Ashley topped the glitzy linens with dainty baby’s breath bouquets, nestled in burlapwrapped vases.

Florist Vicki Sepielli of Kiwi Fleur took advantage of the season’s floral bounty by incorporating bright, bold blooms with textured neutrals and muted greens such as succulents and eucalyptus. Subtly placed fresh peaches added a touch of sweetness to the floral centerpieces.
In Memoriam
The bride paid special homage to her late mother by wrapping the bridal bouquet with a ribbon of lace carefully removed from her mother’s wedding dress. She also attached a charm to her bouquet that showcased her mother’s picture. “I felt like I was holding on to her all the way down the aisle,” recalls Ashley.
Location, Location, Location
“With springtime weddings, people are looking for a pretty outdoor backdrop,” Skinner observes. Ashley selected Columbia Square for the ceremony because of her fondness for the fountain—and because it’s walking distance to the reception at the Charles H. Morris Center. Skinner creatively arranged the guest seating into three v-shaped rows so that not only the fountain, but also the historic Kehoe House, would frame the ceremony.
Extra Help
Even though Ashley wanted to handle most of the design details herself, she hired Skinner “for questions, advice, referrals and occasional therapy,” she jokes. She then spent more than a year taking trips to Savannah to meet with potential vendors and scouring Pinterest for DIY inspiration. Eventually, the grounded glitterati transformed their home office into a “wedding room,” where the crafty bride dreamt up ways to personalize a union that would last through the seasons. S

Inspired by the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, a Midwestern couple embarks on a nautical adventure to tie the knot in the Port City.
Sally and Peter MCGRATH’s wedding plans began with a return to Sally’s hometown, Savannah, and a call to Tristan Zabenko Needham. The creative director and co-owner of Design Studio South calls Savannah home, but she has family all over the country—a fact which suited the Chicago-based couple and their vision of refined, yet reformed, Southern nuptials. Sally and Needham started by choosing the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, then set about creating an eloquent event that cited the bride’s coastal roots and spoke to the elegance of traditional Southern weddings. “The venue spoke most to Sally,” Needham recalls. “Then, my process began. To create a design plan, the bride and I start with a Pinterest board. Then, we make a specific document that has everything outlined—from the dress to the confetti.”
Nautical and Nice Incorporating accents that mirrored the nautical theme of their venue—from the groomsmen’s anchor neckties to the customized cornhole set sporting sailor stripes—added a playful sense of adventure and romance. Nontraditional musical interludes from Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac and Ray LaMontagne recordings gave the ceremony an even-more-personal twist.

“Music is very important to Sally and Peter and really expresses their personality as a couple,” Needham explains. Rocking soundtrack notwithstanding, ritual ruled at the nautical nuptials, from the custom designed invitation suite to the classic Southern sit-down dinner catered by Starland Cafe. The bride even wore her mother’s wedding dress, which was designed and handmade by her grandmother. “Sally and Peter went very traditional, but there were things they chose not to do, such as the bouquet toss,” Needham says. “The bride and groom also decided on a ‘first look’ and took their wedding photos before the ceremony so that they could spend more time with friends and family during the cocktail hour.” With a ceremony among gold and navy accents in the museum’s gardens and a reception under strings of twinkling lights in the Assembly Room, the couple defined the new Southern style: traditional, refreshing and personal. “It was a simple ceremony,” says Needham. “But it was romantic, Southern and meaningful. You can really tell how much Sally and Peter care for one another, which is the most important part of all.” S

Maritime Bliss
Needham didn’t go overboard when decorating the neoclassical proportions and features of the William Jay-designed Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, built in 1819. She draped fabric in the trees for the ceremony to create an ethereal backdrop and lined the aisles with low-profile white candles and greenery to accentuate the effortless beauty of the historic mansion. “During the cocktail hour,” Needham continues, “the museum opened up for guests to look at the model ships.”
The Color Standard
Navy and gold were an obvious color choice for the maritime venue, but Needham varied the traditional palette by adding complimentary hues such as light blues, dark greens and peaches to soften and round out the overall effect. “This made her palette unique,” Needham explains. “If we had gone with white ribbon on the bridal bouquets it would have been a stark contrast. Light blue adds more interest.”
The Little Details
With anemones, magnolia leaves and lamb’s ear, the boutonnieres added another debonair design element to the ceremony. “You want to work with what’s in season at the florist,” says Needham. “We pulled dark green accents from the foliage to highlight the navy in the color scheme and really made the wedding palette pop.”
Classic Confections
Needham designed Sally and Peter’s cake by adding sugar flowers inspired by the groom’s boutonnieres—and delicate ruffles reminiscent of that edible Southern favorite: oysters. “Pick elements that go with your theme, but keep it fluid by focusing on accents,” says Needham.
Needham didn’t go overboard when decorating the neoclassical proportions and features of the William Jay-designed Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, built in 1819. “During the cocktail hour,” Needham says, “the museum opened up for guests to look at the model ships.” spring /summer 2015 savannah weddings

Expats Maureen Miller and Andrew Ienuso wanted a sprawling, Southern-style lawn party for their June wedding, a throwback to the groom’s early years in Savannah. Planning via email from abroad in Singapore, where they both teach at an international school, the couple relied on local event designer Andrea Gray Harper to deliver on their dream day. And deliver she did, with the ideal mixture of elegant traditions and laid-back comfort for which she’s known: the bucolic, oak-framed beauty of Dunham Farms; a menu of down home staples and his-and-hers cocktails; a vivid color palette inspired by the subtropical pastels of Lilly Pulitzer; plenty of country music and a lively game of cornhole.
Let it Rain Yet, nothing says “Savannah” more than a summer shower in the afternoon. So, when that unwelcome guest arrived smack dab in the middle of the happy couple’s vows, Maureen and Andrew rolled with it like the ideal Hostess City ambassadors, smiling and carrying on—and so did their guests.

“What can you do?” asks Maureen, emailing from Mt. Everest Base Camp in Nepal, where the Ienusos are finally enjoying their honeymoon. “I was standing in front of my family and closest friends marrying my best friend. What did I care if it rained? I just laughed. It was still the perfect day.”
More than Words The officiant sped up the ceremony and Harper calmly relocated the party indoors. Then, just as quickly as the downpour started, the clouds parted to reveal a luminous sky. Harper reminisces, casting her eyes heavenward. “It was like somebody up there said, ‘Well, we wanted you to have this magical light for your pictures.’”

Cheesy Romance
Designer Andrea Gray Harper and caterer B. Matthews conspired to craft a memorable “cheese cake” for the bride and groom—a riff on the couple’s savory snack of choice. Maureen loved the stacked cheese wheels. “Because our wedding was so small and intimate, it was really important to have touches that were uniquely us.”
Taking Notes
As a nod to Maureen and Andrew’s profession and in honor of how they met, Harper employed a chalkboard with “Today’s Lesson” to showcase the reception menu. In a twist on tradition, she tied tin cans on the backs of their chairs and wrote “Just Married” on them. Maureen kept the cans as mementos of the beautiful day.
Lucky Charm
All wedding planning starts with the couple, advises event designer Harper. When it came to crafting Maureen’s bouquet, she stuck to the feminine palette desired by the bride, but punctuated the spray with bamboo. A symbol of tranquility, virtue and balance in Far Eastern cultures, the bamboo also offered a nod to Singapore.
Little Cowgirls
Maureen spied Tea Princess dresses paired with tiny cowboy boots on Pinterest, and just knew she wanted to appropriate the look for her two nieces, who would serve as the flower girls. Little KJ had just learned to walk and was overwhelmed by all eyes on her, but her brief tears only added to the warmth and authenticity of the day.
On the Bus
When planning for a destination wedding, Andrea recommends budgeting for transportation. “You want your guests to enjoy themselves and not get lost. Block a hotel that you think is good—for Maureen and Andrew, we chose the Marshall House—and schedule the pick-up and drop-off bus from there.” That way, all of the guests can arrive on time without worrying about parking or drinking. A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT Two transplants give their guests a proper introduction to life in the South with a moonlit view of Savannah’s historic riverfront.

When it comes to wedding venues, Savannah is hardly a one-trick carriage horse. From sandy beaches and expansive marshes to historic cathedrals and liveoak-laden squares, the Hostess City goes out of its way to accommodate every couple’s vision of sweet Southern nuptials. Kate Schellie, an education specialist, and Sheldon Hodges, a captain in the U.S. Army, wanted a classic religious ceremony. They also wanted a reception that paid tribute to both their courtship in Annapolis, Maryland, and their new low country home on Savannah’s outskirts. Wedding planner and event designer Ashley Greene of Posh Petals and Pearls saw the perfect opportunity at The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa. The location gave out-of-town guests a breathtaking view of Savannah’s historic waterfront, lit at night, and of the “Eagle,” the boat Kate’s father brought from Maryland to dock at The Westin. The two focal points—the boat and the horizon—served as reminder of the couple’s past and an appreciation for their future together.

Rolling on the River
In addition to gifting guests with a spectacular view of River Street, Kate and Sheldon assembled welcome bags for their out-of-town visitors. Along with the usual treats, the bags included a list of recommended restaurants and a schedule for the Savannah Belles Ferry. “We made sure that the ferry was still running at the end of the reception so their guests could go out on River Street if they wanted to,” Greene explains.
Wine and Roses
The bride loved the color burgundy, but her planner was hesitant to incorporate such a bold color into the wedding palette. However, the skillful designer found ways to bring in pops of the hue without overwhelming the aesthetic. She used deep burgundy in the bridesmaids’ dresses, the accent ribbons, and the table runners (in place of full-drape linens).
A Lighter Touch
Soft pink and dusty rose blooms paired with white hydrangeas run the risk of being swallowed up by a pale backdrop, but the bridesmaids’ stately burgundy dresses made the posies pop. The bride’s hand-tied bouquet was made entirely of bright white florals—no greenery—to emulate the color and texture of the lace overlay on her exquisite gown.
Sculpting Space
Though the Westin’s lower ballroom allowed for access to the front lawn and riverfront views, the large space posed a challenge—especially when the guest list dropped dramatically due to a family illness. “We strove to make the room still feel intimate,” says Greene, who used a mixture of high and low floral centerpieces and draped the ceiling to personalize and transform the hotel ballroom. With just five months to plan, a destination couple and their local planner cozy up to an intimate and inspired celebration.

Genina Ramirez of From This Day Forward Weddings and Events is a “big, big fan” of intimate weddings. “They’re actually my favorite because you focus more on family and the things that matter most,” she says. The recent celebration of Chelsea Snell and Donny Stage’s nuptials bolsters her case. Texas-born Chelsea and Tennessean Donny met at the University of Memphis in 2013, then made their home near Donny’s family after graduation. When he finally popped the question a year ago, the couple had already discussed the idea of a small gathering of their 30 closest friends and family members to share their day. After a graduation trip to Savannah, Chelsea knew, without a doubt, that she'd found the destination. She loved the city’s timeworn tapestry of cobblestones and squares. When she called Ramirez just five months before their wedding date, there was no time to waste. “With shorter engagements, couples go with their gut more,” Ramirez reflects. “They tend to spend less time stressing out and second-guessing their choices.” For Chelsea and Donny, the ceremony, reception venue, photography and food were the most vital—which helped Ramirez focus on cozy, yet flexible, spaces to make for a memorable family-centered weekend.

The couple said “I do” beneath the latticework of 200-year-old oaks in Pulaski Square, then led a pedicab caravan to Garibaldi Café—chosen by the bride specifically for the golden glow cast by its lighting at night. There, the newly extended family laughed, talked and danced into the wee hours as they feasted on a seven-course dinner, complete with wine pairings and a dessert bar. Such enjoyment of the finer things is one of the perks of a Savannah wedding—and so is the abundance of intimate, elegant venues. “We don’t have lots of venues that hold 200-plus people,” Ramirez says, “but our squares and historic places make us such an interesting city for smaller weddings.”

All Together Now
To bring home the sense of family, Donny and Chelsea rented the Pulaski Square Estate so that all of their guests could stay together. Chelsea watched Genina’s team stage the ceremony site out of the upstairs window as she got her hair done. Then, she walked down the steps and crossed Harris Street right into her dream wedding. “You can’t replicate that in a lot of places, and there’s nothing like it,” Ramirez declares.
Color Me Happy
The wedding’s vibrant palette was inspired by different threads woven throughout the couple’s lives. The pops of cobalt blue, a request of Donny’s to balance the feminine touches of pink, paid homage to the couple’s alma mater. The sparkling gold dresses, worn by Chelsea’s two sisters as bridesmaids and niece as flower girl, reflected the soft, shimmering light of Garibaldi at night. Ramirez picked up on the two hues when she designed the wedding invitations, using deep blue envelopes with gold foil inserts.
In Full Bloom
Artisan baker Natasha Gaskill handcrafted a realistic Stargazer lily out of sugar to adorn the diminutive wedding cake. It was a first for Natasha, but a touching symbol for Chelsea’s family. The Stargazer is Chelsea’s grandmother’s favorite flower, and she and her youngest sister have a likeness of the lily tattooed on their feet. The Oriental flower’s rich pink petals influenced the vivid magenta found in the bridal party’s bouquets and the groomsmen’s argyle socks.
Going to the Chapel
Ramirez kept the ceremony minimal but warm and inviting by placing antique church pews from Rentiquity beneath the natural arch of live oak branches in Pulaski Square. The “aisle” was carpeted with white and fuchsia rose petals and marked by old-style lanterns.
“Our” Song
Chelsea and Donny definitely wanted a first dance— and to happily cut the rug with their guests after dinner. But instead of investing in a deejay, they worked with Ramirez to create a custom mix of tunes that they downloaded onto their iPod. Ramirez rented a Bose speaker, pressed play, and everyone—from the youngest to the oldest—put on their dancing shoes. S

When beachcombers Rikki L’Heureux and Dustin Yates decided to make their union official, it only made sense to start their lives with a wedding that was as breezy as the day they met. The two struck up a conversation while swimming in the ocean at Panama City Beach—so it’s no wonder they loved the Tybee Island Wedding Chapel on Savannah’s sandy shores. “Rikki and Dustin are so fun—and probably one of the most easygoing couples I’ve ever worked with,” Jessica Pata, of House of Pata Event Planning says. “They really wanted an event that would reflect their personalities.” Pata was brought onboard during the process to help balance the busy couple’s schedules—Rikki was in college and Dustin serves in the Army. New to the Savannah wedding scene and an Army wife herself, the planner helped parlay her collective knowledge of events and military culture into a wedding that achieved the right balance of beachy and beautiful.

The end result was an intimate, coolly coastal gettogether overflowing with personal touches. “I was so impressed by the huge cross that Rikki’s father, Ron, made out of cedar,” the planner enthuses. “It was so special for him to create that by hand for his daughter and son-in-law to say their vows in front of—and it was so beautiful to look at.” The groom’s uncle presided over the ceremony, and a cousin and family friend of the happy couple provided ceremony music.
We Salute You “The thing I loved most about this wedding was the military saber arch ceremony,” Pata recalls. “The bride and groom came out and walked under the arch and all the men said, ‘Welcome to the Army, Mrs. Yates!’ It was so special and really showed who they are: a tight-knit family and a close group of friends.” The wedding was so packed with loved ones’ special contributions that even the planner could hardly keep track of the countless thoughtful gestures. “Special, personalized touches are what make your day unique,” the planner observes, “and you’ll be so happy that you took the time to include them.”

In lieu of the traditional guestbook, guests signed a large wooden cutout of the United States, which the couple would later hang in their home. “There was a bit of confusion at first because a few people signed the tablecloth rather than the cutout!” Pata laughs. “Once we got that cleared up, everything was fine.”
Get Me to the Church
“The Tybee Island Wedding Chapel is gorgeous anyway—it’s such a simple, beautiful space,” Pata says of her clients’ aisle of choice. “The design of the ballroom and the way the event flowed came together perfectly.”
Jar of Hearts
Pale pink jars held bunches of blushing bouquets handcrafted from tissue paper by the bride and her family. Custom coozies with the couple’s last name were placed on the tables as an oldschool souvenir.
Reading the Signs

P lanning an autumn affair? Watch as a historic venue undergoes a stunning seasonal renaissance in the hands of two enamored Atlantans.

On the green bluff that was home to Savannah’s colonial Trustees Garden, overlooking brick and stone fortifications along the Savannah River, Emily and Matt Liber became a family. Theirs was a luxurious ceremony that combined the sophistication of a black-tie event with the colors and spirit of a warm autumn—a true Southern original. Hailing from Atlanta, Emily and Matthew turned to Nicole Schwalge of Ivory and Beau to coordinate their day-of details and bring the Savannah touch to their wedding. Along with some local color, the couple incorporated some moody hues of their own.
Made in the Shade “The color palette of this wedding was unique,” says Schwalge. “With the blacks, reds and grays, it’s different from any other wedding we’ve done, and the fall details were amazing.” The couple chose to forego the traditional altar, creating instead a customized setting for their vows.

A Candlelit Glow The altar design proved to be a sneak peek at the reception décor. Inside the Charles H. Morris Center, silver and orange pumpkins, textured table settings and bright accents of candlelight, florals and greenery enveloped guests in the glow of the vibrant season. Tables laden with Southern favorites—fried green tomatoes, barbecue sliders and shrimp ’n’ grits—stayed true to Savannah culture. On another table, a cake with sugar flowers and a dark sash echoed the design of the bride’s dress. “This wedding was personal,” Schwalge remembers. “I loved how moody and romantic everything was.”

Well Seasoned
Incorporating autumn was all about marrying rustic accents with upscale details. Cast-iron, candlelit lanterns were paired with long tree branches, and glittery accents contrasted with the natural allure of fresh flora. “There were pumpkins, lanterns and gourds everywhere,” Nicole says. “It perfectly matched the setting and the season.”
Up in Smoke
The pair paid tribute to their groomsmen with a cigar bar—complete with customized matchboxes and individually wrapped stogies. Not only did it add a masculine touch to the festivities, but it also added a festive sense of fun. “What a special way to include the guys,” Nicole reflects.
Botanical Beauties
The bridal bouquets’ muted “hen and chick” succulents and eucalyptus sprigs brought contrast to a bright floral palette of white, pumpkin orange and deep scarlet. The boutonnieres also sported smaller versions of the graygreen plants, adding an earthy tone to the otherwise formal tuxedos.
Evening Elegance
Thanks to longer nights and cooler temperatures, the wedding party was able to take things up a notch with fulllength black bridesmaid dresses and black-tie tuxedos. “Long dresses give the overall ceremony a formal quality,” Nicole observes. “It really changed the atmosphere.” S

A MOVING
CELEBRATION Two nostalgic New Yorkers start their honeymoon early by planning a wedding at their favorite tourist destination.
Manhattanites Jenn and Scott LUNIN just couldn’t get enough of coastal Georgia. Planning their own wedding offered them yet another excuse to visit their favorite place. “We had been to Savannah a couple times on vacation and we just loved the city,” says Jenn. “A few weeks after we got engaged, we went down to look at venues. We just felt that it would be something different for all of our guests—something that was really us.”

A down-home reception menu of crab cakes, shrimp ’n’ grits, cucumber sandwiches and Krispy Kreme Donuts followed the ceremony under a chuppah, complete with the stomping of the glass and the blessing of Mickve Israel’s Rabbi Robert Haas.

“We’re not from Savannah, and we’re not members of the congregation, but we felt like we got a very personal ceremony and a rabbi who took the time to get to know us,” Scott says. “He gave us an experience that was equal parts tradition, fun, sentiment—and serious enough to reflect our commitment to each other.”
On Tour For these frequent Hostess City tourists, the celebration was about more than the love between two people. “We got to spend more time with our friends and family, and most of them hadn’t been to Savannah before,” says Jenn. “We got to experience the city with them and take them to places that we love.” From pre-wedding fun with Savannah Smiles’ dueling pianos to a post-ceremony chow down at Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room, the city became a playground—all thanks to the couple’s careful planning. “While DIY weddings can be challenging, in the end it is absolutely worth it to have a wedding in a city and a venue that you really love,” Jenn says. “It might take more work, but, at the end of the day, everyone is flexible and willing to help.”

A location-scouting visit led Jenn and Scott to Congregation Mickve Israel, a stunning Gothic Revival synagogue on Monterey Square. The 19th century structure’s mix of Jewish tradition and fairy tale architecture suited them perfectly.
Mazel Tov
Things new, old, borrowed and blue weren’t the only traditions incorporated into Jenn and Scott’s ceremony. Family and faith took center stage. “We had everything from the breaking of the glass to Scott’s tallis from his bar mitzvah,” Jenn says. “And we invited our families to stand around us under the chuppah. We thought it would be nice for them to be a part of the ceremony that way.”
Room to Breathe
The reception at the pastoral, locally owned Mackey House gave the more than 100 guests the space they needed to celebrate without sacrificing intimacy. “The Mackey House was something different,” says Jenn. “We were on the deck. We liked having the dance floor there and the ability to go through the house.”
Sugar Rush
Baker’s Pride made the three-tiered wedding cake with blossom details and pops of color to match the wedding palette. “I added sugar flowers,” says Jenn. “I wanted it to fit and not be overly ‘done.’ The layers were different—chocolate, vanilla and carrot cake—with cream cheese frosting. We couldn’t decide at the tasting—they were all great!” S

PROVENCE A couple flies south from New York for a charmed celebration that’s as fresh as it is French.

When Big Apple duo Brandy Williams and Matthew Philippe set out to tie the knot, they headed south, toward Brandy’s hometown of Tallahassee, Florida. But a detour through Savannah led the pair to design a dazzling destination wedding instead. “We wanted a Southern destination that was also easy for family and friends to travel to,” says Brandy. “We also wanted a place that had great food and lots of activities for our guests.”
Charmed Chic Inspired by vintage European design and hometown hospitality, the bride and groom decided on a traditional ceremony amid the simple elegance of Bethesda Academy’s Whitefield Chapel. “We wanted to be married by a pastor in a church,” says the bride, who paired live piano music with traditional wedding songs. “We kept our guest list intimate, so we thought the chapel would be the perfect.” Brandy and her planner, Nicole Schwalge of Ivory and Beau, envisioned the breezy beauty of the fields of Provence or Lorraine. “We were going for a French country feel,” says the bride. “We wanted a warm and inviting setting.” The quaint, historic venue inspired ideas for the fresh, minimal chapel décor and the bright, airy reception at the Georgia State Railroad Museum.

“The design inspiration began with romantic flowers with pops of bold colors,” Schwalge explains. “It was a very country chic look with burlaps and laces and vintage bottles.”
Living Color From the bright pink lipstick on the bride to the splashy, multicolored socks of the groom and groomsmen, the vibrant personalities of the couple shone through, blending with earthier, traditional touches to create a one-of-a-kind celebration. “Throughout the planning process, the look transformed into something that was very fun and playful,” says Schwalge. “Their ceremony was happy and romantic.” Surrounded by family and friends, the exuberant couple joined in a celebration that spoke of their individuality, their enjoyment, and the bliss yet to come. “Brandy and Matthew were one of the sweetest couples—so gracious and in love,” says Nicole. “Their happiness shines through the photos and I love how playful they are. You can tell they’re having fun.”

Dating back to 1740, Bethesda Academy’s Whitefield Chapel still retains its original wooden pews and brick floor, lending a traditional aspect to this colorful, quirky wedding. Brandy and Matthew made it theirs for a day by lining the aisle with jars of baby’s breath and roses.
Short and Sweet
The mint green bridesmaid dresses by J. Crew were playful additions to the ceremony. With their sweetheart necklines, delicate pleating, and complimenting nude heels, they matched the French country theme without selling it short.
Right on Track
Twine-wrapped bottle vases and mismatched vintage photo frames accented the tables and entrance of the Georgia State Railroad Museum. Delicate lace runners on long, family-style tables pulled together the disparate elements to evoke an elegant atmosphere.
Ribbons in the Sky
For Brandy and Matthew’s send-off, typical traditions weren’t going to cut it. “Instead of birdseed or bubbles like most brides do, Brandy wanted ribbon wands for their exit from the ceremony,” says Schwalge. Wooden dowels and pale pink streamers made for a more whimsical farewell. S

CONSIDERED A Southern belle plays wedding hostess, honoring her attendants and guests with carefully curated delights.

When wedding designer Adrienne Lino of Posh Petals and Pearls first meets with a bride- and groom-to-be, she always begins the conversation with the same request: “If I were to walk into your wedding right now, tell me what I would expect to see.” Some couples wax poetic for hours, sharing a laundry list of specific details which the designer must sort and pare down to create an affair that is cohesive, not carnival. But Charlotte couple Emily and Alex French’s vision was simple: the hospitable Southerners wanted something for everyone to enjoy. Beyond that, they were happy to let their designer’s skills shine.
Ladies and Gentlemen And shine they did. Soft blush tones are currently popular, but Lino dressed them up with touches of gold and sparkle. Even more dramatic was the incorporation of rich browns to add a masculine element, transforming the outdoor cocktail space at the Savannah Golf Club into a sophisticated smoking room. The result was a seamless blend of his-and-hers touches as perfectly paired as the laidback couple themselves— along with something for every guest to delight in.

Lino lavished the gentlemanly guests with a room of their own during the cocktail hour. Oversized leather furniture anchored the outside seating area, which offered guests their choice from a menu of fine, copper-colored bourbons and full-bodied, richly aromatic cigars.
Just Peachy
From centerpieces to bridesmaids’ gowns, many Southern brides incorporate Georgia peaches into their designs—but blush tones needn’t be blasé. With bright pops of greenery and gold, soft and subtle neutrals go glam.
Graphic Glitter
Though sequined, chevron-print linens might sound more Vegas than Versailles, this neutral-toned version prevents the print from overpowering. The graphic detailing creates an even more perfect union when paired with organically shaped floral centerpieces that, when placed in tall glass vases, appear to float in the air.
Stylish Simplicity
Often, it’s the little touches that yield the most design impact. At the reception, muted green eucalyptus sprigs rested lightly on cloth napkins. Small antlers and earth-toned bricks—relics from the Golf Club’s original historic clubhouse—adorned the bourbon bar. S
