CAN’T HELP

FALLING WHEN WE SET OUT LAST FALL to craft this spring issue of Savannah Weddings magazine, we were already seeing shades of what the new season would bring. The protracted period of “blush and bashful” subtleness that had imbued weddings with a delicate ethereal quality over these past several years yielded to bolder, more assertive and vivid expressions of individuality apparent not only in bridal fashion and accessories but also in the real-life couples sharing their stories. Within these pages, you’re invited to the weddings of nine couples that chose to begin their lives and promise forever right here in our river city. You’ll meet Brenna and Alexis, who said their “I dos” under a cascade of flowers, and Laura and Eric who made brunch the most important meal of their lives. Two worldly couples—Amber and Travis and Jon and Anita—found ways of blending not only their families but also their different cultures. These couples’ ceremonies run the gamut between intimate courtyard elopements to lavish seaside celebrations. Each one offers a spark of inspiration to help you as you begin planning your special day, and they reassert that the most memorable events are those that throw out the playbook for the deeply personal. They reaffirm for us that the courtyard of a coffee shop can be as sacred as a historic sanctuary as long as true love abides. The South—as well as our beloved Savannah—is often characterized as a monolith, some intractable rock firmly stuck in a place not wholly of the past

but not in the present or forward-looking. But, we know that while those long-lasting attributes of our region—our history, the land, our foodways and gracious manners—are worth cherishing, we are constantly evolving and our city, especially, is one with a distinct personality that welcomes multitudes. We can’t help falling in love with it over and over again, and we suspect you’ll feel the same way, too. Thanks for joining us,

Meet the HAIR AND MAKEUP ARTIST

COURTESY ANN RAMEE

Averil Hull Owner, JW Salon and Spa How far in advance should a bride book you? As soon as she knows her date and the number of people that will be getting services in her wedding party. Prior to that, she should start researching salons and call them to learn about the booking process, pricing and deposits.

What should she ask herself before coming in? How she likes her part, if she likes her ears showing, hair up or down, and where she wants the veil placed. Describe your consultation process. We require a trial for all brides. It’s an hour and a half long, and we try up to three different looks. The purpose isn’t to necessarily find the perfect look, but to also find boundaries—what you don’t like and what you do like. What’s your most-requested hairstyle? Right now, it’s more of a lived-in, bohemian look—something that has movement but structure. Braiding within the style has been very popular and will continue this upcoming season. What about makeup? Most brides want makeup that makes their eyes pop. We also get several requests for “glowy” looks.

“WHO DOESN’T GET A TWINGE of delight when something beautiful, both in looks and to the touch, comes in the mail?” asks calligrapher Ann Ramee. “I think it sets the tone and anticipation of an exciting event to follow.” That’s for sure. One look at Ramee’s elegant script on an envelope and you can’t help but feel special, as if you’ve received a personalized keepsake. The former sign shop owner fell in love with the fine art of calligraphy after taking a class in her twenties and experimenting with lettering and fonts through her business. About town you can still see her handiwork on the shingles for

26 savannah weddings

spring /summer 2017

Six Pence Pub, Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room and Wylly Island. In recent years, she has turned her interest into a passion project, scripting poems, vows, gift boxes—even a fly-fishing rod—for friends, family and newly engaged couples. A self-described “paper snob,” Ramee has helped brides near and far design everything from full wedding stationery to custom writing styles eventually transformed into letterpress type. “Calligraphy is such a beautiful art form. From ancient manuscripts to graffiti, it’s such a unique kind of expression.” aramee414@me.com —Amy Paige Condon

Any tricks to beat Savannah’s humidity? It’s important to realize that the longer you’re outside, the faster your hair and makeup will disintegrate. I always tell my brides not to touch their hair or let anyone else touch it until pictures. After that, just have fun! What if rain is in the forecast? We recommend that she wears her hair up—it can still look soft and romantic. Have you ever had to tell a bride no? Yes, if we know we can’t achieve a look or if the hair just won’t do what the bride’s wanting, we let her know. We don’t want anyone wasting her time or money. Secret weapons: Mousse, hairspray, texture spray and dry shampoo. When they’re used properly, magic happens!

Meet the CAKE DESIGNER

C O U R T E S Y LY T L E F O T O

Bree Stanfill Owner, Vintage Soul Cakes How long before the wedding should a couple book you? Most book with me an average of six months in advance, but I’ve had as little as three weeks and as long as 14 months. What do you offer that other cake designers don’t? My cakes are full-service, meaning you get me with your cake. I deliver, set up, help the couple with the cake cutting photos to make sure it goes smoothly. I cut and serve the cake, and even bring some cute little to-go boxes for extras.

PHOTO BOOTHS have been a hot commodity at weddings for a while now, but the Bohobooth is taking it to the next level—and a pretty cool one, at that. The idea to transform a 1968 Shasta camper into a quirky party trick comes from Atlanta couple Hollie and Brandon Lytle, who have brought it to Savannah quite a few times for wedding parties. As wedding photographers, the Lytles have seen their share of photo booths at receptions and thought it was time for something different. Exactly what was discovered two years ago in Virginia, where they found a retro camper. The couple snapped it up and hauled it home, rehabbing it and adding special touches like pressed tin ceiling tiles and vintage concert posters for wallpaper. They even swapped out the camper’s original exterior wings for a carved metal set that was a gift from a friend. “We call it the photo boutique for the bohemian chic,” Hollie says. Upon booking the booth, Hollie and

28 savannah weddings

spring /summer 2017

Brandon create a custom backdrop that incorporates the clients’ wedding colors, theme or any other special requests, and iron out all the details from there, like how many hours the booth will be open and exactly where at the reception it will be set up. “We like to put it all out there ahead of time so everything’s taken care of and the bride doesn’t have to worry about anything,” Hollie adds. And with that, guests hop in and choose from an assortment of fun photo props, including handmade leather animal masks, crowns of feathers and flowers, cowboy hats, puppets and other merriment. As part of the package, a photographer is in the booth to snap the shot, and guests walk out with a print and a sticker of the image. A day or two later, a photo link is sent to guests for free downloads—and lots and lots of memories. Rates start at $650 for two hours (plus mileage), and Lytle Foto offers packages that include wedding photography and Bohobooth rental. Lytlefoto.com —Monica James

What style of cake is the most fun to make? A chandelier cake—it hangs, typically upside down, with the larger tier on top and smallest on the bottom. It’s truly a show stopper. Even if the design is simple, guests end up gushing over it all night! What’s the next big thing in wedding cake design? The geode trend will definitely continue into 2017. Metallics are also popular—rose gold and copper are going to be big this year. Secret weapon: My husband, Kory. I handle everything by myself leading up to the wedding, but on delivery days, he is my right hand. He drives so I can focus on the cake, and helps carry it, set it up and assists with everything.

C O U R T E S Y B R E E S TA N F I L L

CAMPY CAMERA

What’s your signature wedding cake? I call it Not Your Average Wedding Cake—it’s an almond cake filled with strawberries and chocolate ganache, with hazelnut buttercream. It sounds like a lot of flavors, but it all blends so perfectly.

over wedding extravaganzas, the term “runaway bride” takes on a whole new meaning. Written by Maggie Harney “THE COUPLE CALLED ME ON A WEDNESDAY,” recounts the Rev. Steve Schulte, “and I married them on a Thursday.” Rev. Schulte, in his signature seersucker suit, has officiated more than 6,000 weddings to date. And, elopements have become his unconfirmed trademark, and not just for a military couple awaiting deployment or a mid-life pair walking down the aisle a second time. “In the old days,” Rev. Shulte reminisces, “eloping meant you ran away and got married. Today, a lot of couples just want a wedding for two because it’s so personal—there’s an intimacy that just can’t be matched. Elopements have more emotion, more tears. It becomes just about the bride and the groom. Honestly, you can’t get more genuine than that.” While eloping may still seem slightly taboo, photographer Izzy Hudgins thinks it’s high time for the trend—and its modern remake—to leave as strong and stirring an impression as a traditional ceremony and reception. “I’m seeing people move away from the old-school concept of eloping or running away to the courthouse and instead making it into an event and almost like a styled shoot,” she says. With charcuteries and flowers, stunning images and champagne, it’s not just a date with a judge but a full-on affair—as these two real-life couples illustrate. F

ELOPEMENT DOS AND DON’TS Do ... spend time choosing a photographer. “Find one who’s style you love and who you feel comfortable with and trust,” notes Izzy Hudgins. “Be open to their suggestions, and be open to spending a three-to-four-hour session.” Don’t … be afraid to break tradition. “With elopements, you are better able to do exactly as you want,” enthuses photographer Callie Beale. “There is a thrill to throwing tradition out of the window!” Do ... make it all about you and don’t sweat the small stuff. “We didn’t want to stress over flowers, favors and guest lists,” explains bride Candace Winkles-Fincher. “So we didn’t.” Don’t ... listen to the haters. “An elopement is not a lesser wedding—it’s a different wedding,” confirms Winkles-Fincher. “It’s okay to elope.” Do ... plan accordingly. “Bonus tip: In Savannah, don’t elope on a Saturday,” warns Hudgins. “It really should be a Monday or a Thursday!” Don’t ... be afraid of going for the gold with the location. “My first choice is always Forsyth Park,” says the Rev. Steve Schulte. Do ... plan a second ceremony only if you want to. Notes bride Brenna Johnson, “Now that I’m planning a second [ceremony] in April, I keep thinking we should’ve just stuck with the first one!”

THE PERFECT STORM WHILE MOST SAVANNAHIANS were headed west to avoid the wrath of Hurricane Matthew last October, Brenna Johnson and Alexis Lefebvre were Hostess City-bound from Charlotte, North Carolina for a small courthouse ceremony. With the help of Audrey Wagner King of French Knot Studios and Hudgins, their Savannah nuptials continued without a hitch. Whimsical handmade floral backdrops and personal touches like a surprise bumble bee wedding knife from the groom’s mother, the brief ceremony and celebration proved bright and hopeful, despite the stormy setbacks. “There was literally no one around when we were taking our wedding photos,” muses Brenna. “We were just frolicking around and basking in our love, while everyone was preparing for the storm.”

“Here we were driving into the storm to get married, and Audrey was calling us saying, ‘You better hurry; I don’t know that anything is going to be open!’”

SECOND-TIME CHARM FOR CANDACE Winkles-Fincher and Ras Fincher, eloping to Savannah was an obvious choice because of the city’s scenery, history and design. “ I asked my fiancé, ‘Do you want to get married in a haunted hotel or a non-haunted hotel?’” says Candace. “Needless to say, that was resolved quickly.” Both Candace and Ras had been married before and were looking for something more intimate and personal. Following the small ceremony on the terrace of the Marshall House and wedding photos throughout the picturesque city with photographer Callie Beale, the couple spent a stress-free, memorable day in Savannah. “We had the most relaxing day leading up to our wedding,” remembers Candace. “We shopped, had lunch, strolled through beautiful Savannah, drank coffee, and I spent some time working on a small watercolor of my bouquet. It was truly some kind of magical, relaxing wedding day that doesn’t typically exist in this part of the world.”

“Society today tells us to have a huge, elaborate wedding and reception to show the world that you love each other—that’s just not true.”

A WORD OF ADVICE For those slightly intimidated by breaking tradition, Rev. Schulte has just the fix. “Some will have a reception back home after they have offended everyone equally by inviting no one.”

MADE WITH LOVE Weddings are a caterer's bread and butter. So, we wondered how three chefs

well-known for serving up special days celebrated their own?

Compiled by Amy Paige Condon

Chef Josh Thomas

Company: JThomas Catering Married: September 2010 Will never forget: The braised veal

Chef Nick Mueller

Company: Chef Nick Mueller and Co. Married: June 1995 Will never forget: The crab dip “Tracy's and my wedding was held at Sister’s Court—the old Catholic convent on 37th Street. Earnest Mitchell with Merriwicke Florists did the flowers. Mary Hopkins of Studio 321 was our photographer. The jazz duo Aubrey Mumford and Percy Williams played. And our first dance was to Harry Connick Jr.’s “Jill,” a song he wrote for his wife. Maggie Friday was our caterer, and her crab dip still sticks out in my mind. It was made in the classic Savannah style: mushrooms, sherry, served hot with toasted garlic rounds. Tina Blackstone baked our wedding and groom’s cakes. They were both delicious!”

Chef Cynthia Creighton-Jones

Company: Cape Creations Catering Married: March 2004 Will never forget: The brandy-infused fruit cake “South African wedding cakes are delicious English-style fruit cakes, usually baked a few months ahead so that it can mature with a ¼ cup of brandy poured over it once a month. I was lucky to find an America baker who was willing to bake my South African fruit cake for my wedding. We used fondant, as it was easier than the traditional marzipan. She decorated it with white chocolate animal molds, a leopardprint ribbon, carved wooden animals and a hut that my mum brought from South Africa. It looked beautiful and reflected my heritage—and of course, it tasted delicious! We had a triple-chocolate groom’s cake for my husband. I shall let you in on a secret: we make the same cake for Christmas, but I usually let mine mature with brandy for a year. Oh my!”

“[My wife, Courtney and I] were married in Forsyth Park, then had our reception at the Charles H. Morris Center. We served our guests slow-braised veal cheeks with creamy Anson Mills polenta, black truffle corn relish and tomato gravy. My wife and I love braised meats. I don’t think there is any other method of cooking that holds a place in my heart or my career more than braising. With all of the new-age cooking methods that we apply in our everyday operations (via sous vide or anti-griddles), braising is still my favorite way to cook. It’s simple. It’s classic, and it’s good for the soul. Taking typically tough cuts of meat, bathing them in a rich hearty stock and letting them cook for hours at a low temperature. What doesn’t sound appealing about that? How does that not speak of love?”

TRUE BLUE Two high school sweethearts prove that changing plans makes a charming love story all the more engaging.

SAVANNAH NATIVES Meredith Stevens and Jonathan “Jonny” Hester might never have met if he hadn’t transferred from Benedictine to Savannah Christian. Fortunately, fate was on their side. After high school, they went to different colleges. Jonny played baseball at Middle Georgia College, then later at the University of Georgia. Meredith studied nursing at Georgia College in Milledgeville. “But we were never more than two hours apart,” she says. They both graduated in 2012, and Jonny worked toward a master’s degree in anesthesia while Meredith accepted a job as an emergency room nurse at Memorial University Medical Center. Then, in 2015, Jonny made dinner reservations at 700 Drayton at the Mansion on Forsyth Park. “Which wasn’t our usual dinner spot,” Meredith recalls. Because the couple had planned to work for a few years before getting married, she didn’t think much of it. But, when they were seated at a candlelit table on a balcony just big enough for two, Meredith started to think something odd was afoot. “I was like, hmmm,” she says. “But no! Our plan!” Then, dessert was served. “He was talking kind of fast and then he was on one knee,” Meredith explains. “I remember him saying, ‘Will you marry me?’” The rest was a blur. A little less than 10 months later, they said their “I do’s.”

Meredith borrowed her veil from her husband’s sister, who’s also a dear friend. “It was sweet to be able to wear something of hers.” The bride’s cobalt Badgley Mischka shoes provided a pretty pop of color.

Their early June wedding day was a warm one. “It didn’t bother me because I love the hot weather!” laughs Meredith. “But my poor bridesmaids were in long dresses with short sleeves, so I’m sure they were very hot—and the guys in their tuxedos, too.” Most brides dread the thought of rain on their special day, but Meredith (and her wedding party) were grateful for the quick afternoon shower that rolled through to cool things off before the ceremony at St. John’s Episcopal Church. “I remember walking down the aisle and when I got to the point where I could lock eyes with Jonny, I thought, ‘This is awesome and beautiful,’” Meredith says. Afterward, the wedding party piled into a trolley for the ride to the reception at Savannah Yacht Club. When they arrived, the Crystal Clear Band was playing and quickly had everyone on the dance floor. The bride’s younger brother Turner even joined the band on sax for “Uptown Funk.” He had such a blast that he wound up staying to finish the set. “That was really fun. He loved it. I loved it!” says Meredith. At the end of the night, the couple’s chariot, a speedboat, whisked them away to Thunderbolt, where a limo waited to take them to the Mansion on Forsyth Park, just a few steps from where the groom had proposed.

A total of 220 guests attended the ceremony at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Meredith and her family have been members of the congregation for many years. The wedding party got ready next door at the stately and historic GreenMeldrim House—where Union Army General William T. Sherman stayed on his march through Savannah.

A friend of Meredith’s father’s runs Old Savannah Tours, so they were a natural choice for transporting the wedding party to the reception. With 10 bridesmaids and nine groomsmen, the wedding party was larger than most. “I feel really blessed that we did date for a long time, so my friends knew his friends,” the bride says.

Krystal & Ryan Season: Summer Guests: 160 Ceremony and reception: Red Gate Farms

LOV E ,

NATURALLY Family and friends pull their talents together to give a bride and groom the wedding of their dreams.

Written by Judy Bean | Photography by Jessica Roberts

EVER SINCE THEIR DAYS AS HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS, Ryan and Krystal Cerrillo have shared a love of the outdoors. As their romance evolved, some of the couple’s favorite dates took place in the mountains and woods. In fact, Ryan proposed beside a mountain stream in North Carolina. That was in May 2015, and a few months later, Ryan, a Marine, was deployed to Europe. And so began the intercontinental planning. Despite the fact that “there were times when we couldn’t talk for three

58 savannah weddings

weeks,” Krystal says their August wedding “came together beautifully.” They settled on Savannah as the location—specifically Red Gate Farms—simply “for its romantic atmosphere,” says the bride. Working without a professional planner, Krystal credits the celebration’s success to support from family and friends, and members of Ryan’s church in Beaufort, South Carolina, where the couple now lives. The congregation formed a wedding committee that included florist Gay McNair, bakers and wedding day decorators, while bridesmaid

All of the flowers were arranged with a hint of spontaneity. “I love that kind of overgrown look, the idea of accepting beauty as it comes from nature,” Krystal says. Bridesmaids’ dresses were done in a green cotton with tiny white dots, recalling the dappled shade of forests. Ryan’s mother, Sue Cerrillo, made and decorated the vanilla (the couple’s favorite flavor) wedding cake. The floral motif mimicked Krystal’s flower crown, and the signposts on top, which Sue made of craft wood and skewers, echoed the qualities of love as listed in the Bible verse 1 Corinthians 13:4.

Kristen Rowell, an art major at Winthrop University, designed the couple’s invitations and hand-lettered signage. Event musicians included old buddies from high school. Another school friend, Caroline Smith, is a Beaufort hairdresser who created the bride’s soft waves. Other friends and family helped arrange table settings and display the wedding favors: 150 vintage mugs collected by the bride over the course of the year-plus engagement. “People we love all worked together as a team, and that made things so easy for us,” says Krystal. “Even though I wanted to have my hands on everything, I was able to let go and trust so I could just relax and get my hair and makeup done.” Krystal gives a shout-out to Savannah vendors, too, who, she notes, “were so helpful and fantastic. They really eased our stress!” As an alternative to a traditional guest book, the couple displayed a Bible accompanied by markers. A sign asked guests to highlight their favorite verses and sign the margin. “I love flipping through it now and seeing what they chose and the notes they wrote us,” Krystal reflects. After a joyful, energetic reception in the Red Gate barn, the couple departed under the light of sparklers held by friends, and set off in a 1937 Packard for a suite at the Mansion on Forsyth Park. The bride recalls, “When we pulled up, people were admiring the car and greeting us, and it really prolonged the celebration.”

In lieu of traditional trinkets, Krystal ordered each bridesmaid a custom-made robe to wear while getting ready for the wedding. Their names, embroidered by Krystal’s mother, appear on each bodice.

Indie rock band McLeod wowed at the reception, and then left its top-grade amps so that guests could keep dancing to iPhone playlists. “The sound quality was like live music!” exclaims Krystal. Savannah violinist Michael Houston played the processional music, including two favorite hymns of the bride’s and two of the groom’s. The couple was married in a field facing a simple wooden cross at Savannah’s Red Gate Farms, and their reception took place inside the property’s large, wedding-ready barn. For his groomsmen, Ryan ordered tumblers by RTIC, a startup company he admires. They later enjoyed handcrafted Spanish cigars that Ryan had picked up during his European deployment.

WHEN

STARS ALIGN Two independent spirits converge in Savannah and strike the fine art of balance in love and marriage.

Written by Amy Paige Condon | Photography by Izzy Hudgins

JON WAITS WAS A BIG-CITY TROUBADOUR and photographer seeking a smaller community where he could build sustaining friendships. “I was rebooting my entire life,” he recalls of the moment he decided to move to Savannah five years ago. Around the same time, Anita Akella was stepping away from a harried life of global environmental conservation. “I lived out of a

suitcase eight months of the year. I couldn’t have a pet or a plant.” So, she enrolled in Duke University’s MBA program, earned the third of her graduate degrees, then moved to Savannah to start a new ecofriendly business and a new life. It was amazing, they both muse now, how quickly they fell into the embrace of a close-knit group of creative friends. One of those mutual

Even as a young girl, Anita was enchanted by the henna patterns adorning brides on their wedding days, from the intricate mosaics of northern Indian traditions to the simpler designs of her native southern Indian heritage. “I loved it,” she says. “I always wanted it to go up to my elbows.”

pals, Lane Huerta of Lovelane Designs, whom Jon had known since their teenage years in Atlanta, introduced him to Anita—and it wasn’t long before the pair began dating and falling for each other. “I tell this to everyone,” says Anita. “If you love Savannah, it will love you back.” Over the course of the next few years, Jon built his freelance photography business as well as a following for his Americana band Waits and Co. Anita started a career as the business design and arts leadership program coordinator for the Savannah College of Art and Design. Then, in October 2015, Jon proposed to Anita on the steps of the historic Trinity United Methodist Church—a place that threads through the different areas of his life. He grew up the son of a Methodist theologian and scholar, and one of his most rewarding gigs in his new hometown had become coordinating both the Trinity Sanctuary Concert and Thursday Night Opry series. Once Anita said “yes,” her large, extended Indian family, located in California’s Bay Area, began a series of “committee” meetings to help her plan the intricate Hindu wedding ceremony. The first step was to work with the family’s vedic astrologer in India to zero in on the auspicious moment—the most favorable day and time for the marriage to take place. Considering Savannah’s long, hot summers, Anita recalls thinking, “If there happens to be one in early June that would be great …” But, the astrologer said no Hindu could get married between February and August 1, so the couple chose August 5 and 6, 2016, for their dual Christian and Hindu ceremonies. They returned to the fabled Trinity on that Friday for an intimate congregation where they exchanged vows, then retreated to Red Gate Farms for a gregarious gathering of friends and family … and dancing. The following day, the bucolic setting of Oatland Island Wildlife Center provided a lush backdrop to the vivid and sacred Hindu celebration. Guests were welcomed with sandalwood and kumkum blessings, and the women were treated to fragrant jasmine garlands, handcrafted by Anita’s relatives, for their hair. As the couple’s two cultures melded through the ancient ceremony, their guests kept cool by sipping tea and from the breeze of several raffia hand fans. And when the auspicious moment arrived, the crowd jumped to their feet and cheered in unison. As Anita recalls, “I have never felt so loved in my life.”

On the Friday afternoon before the Hindu ceremony, Jon and Anita said their vows before close family and friends at the historic Trinity United Methodist Church, where former pastor Enoch Hendry officiated. Hendry had been a student of Jon’s father, James Waits, who was dean at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. “I wanted more emphasis on the Hindu ceremony, but also to pay respects to my heritage,” Jon says.

Jon’s favorite photo from the wedding shows that even in the midst of serious ritual and tradition, there is space to cut loose in fun and laughter. Top, he and Anita, having energetically showered one another with rice, compete to reach the double toe rings, which when placed on the second toe of Anita’s feet signify she is a married woman in Hindu culture. Instead of a traditional reception, Jon and Anita invited guests to join them at El-Rocko Lounge in downtown Savannah, which is owned by longtime friend of the groom Wes Daniel. Anita requested the Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers duet “Islands in the Stream” for the first dance. Local artist and family friend Katherine Sandoz, who has moonlighted as a dance instructor, worked with the couple for two weeks to help them get their fancy footwork down. Confides Anita, “I’ve been told I’m one part hippie, one part disco-soul and one part country. I think Jon is one part country, one part rock ‘n’ roll and one part L.A. singer-songwriter, so somehow, ‘Islands in the Stream’ was a fitting amalgam.”

FEAST OF

LOVE

A picture-perfect daytime wedding unites a Buckhead couple’s family and friends for a taste of romance.

Written by Allison Hersh | Photography by Justin and Amanda Brown

LAURA STEWART, A CORPORATE EVENT PLANNER from Atlanta, and Eric Gulledge, a chemical engineer from Indiana, share a passion for one particular meal, above all others. “We’re big brunch people,” Laura laughs. “Regardless of the time of day of our wedding, we wanted a brunch menu. We weren’t afraid to do something outside the norm.” When this Buckhead-based couple got engaged in Reynolds Square in Savannah, they decided to host their big day in this majestic mossdraped city, sharing their affinity for Savannah with their guests. “We really wanted our friends and family to experience Savannah,” Laura says. “The city has always been special to us and is filled with special memories.”

Laura and Eric’s loved ones joined forces to create the invitation set for their destination wedding. A friend designed the invitation and save-the-date card, while a bridesmaid developed a custom watercolor map highlighting key locations for the weekend, as well as the couple’s favorite restaurants, squares and landmarks. Laura discovered her lace and silk taffeta gown at Fabulous Frocks in Atlanta. However, there was one problem: the dress was sleeveless. “I really wanted sleeves so I found a seamstress who added them with extra lace from the manufacturer of the dress,” says Laura. “That’s how I got the exact dress I was looking for.” A gourmet brunch menu served as a delightfully unexpected culinary selection for a traditional Southern wedding. “We tried to have breakfast and lunch options so there would be something for everyone,” Laura notes. “The entire menu was amazing.” spring /summer 2017 savannah weddings

real weddings By organizing a daytime brunch wedding, Laura and Eric made an effort to ensure that guests would have ample opportunities to spend time shopping on River Street, experiencing nightlife at City Market and strolling along the beaches of Tybee Island. Shortly after her engagement, Laura selected a few local vendors, including Posh Petals and Pearls event planners, to help organize the details of the weekend. The bride strategically solicited their recommendations regarding other businesses that could, in turn, help make her vision a reality. Laura and Eric’s wedding day kicked off with a ceremony at the historic Trinity United Methodist Church overlooking Telfair Square and featured plenty of traditional details, including elaborate white rose bouquets trimmed with magnolia leaves and silver ribbon. With her dark hair pulled back and topped with a sheer bridal veil, Laura came down the aisle in an ivory lace and silk taffeta wedding gown, accented with layered strands of pearls. Eric greeted her with a wide smile, wearing a dapper tuxedo, feather bow tie and geometric cuff links.

Laura planned to use an heirloom cake topper that had been in her family for four generations, so she knew a simple white wedding cake would be ideal. A multi-tiered masterpiece by Lowcountry Confections featured four different flavors tucked beneath a thick layer of buttercream frosting. “I love the look of a tall cake and wanted to add fresh flowers and magnolia leaves in keeping with the floral arrangements, Laura says.

In the months before her wedding, Laura searched wedding blogs for creative inspiration. Over and over, she found herself attracted to magnolia leaves, which she incorporated into garlands, bouquets and centerpieces, displaying both the green and the brown sides of the oblong leaves. “It’s a very Southern look,” the Atlanta native says. “We selected white flowers to go with the green and brown, and everything looked very fresh and beautiful.”

After a quick trolley ride across town, guests hopped off for the lively reception at the Hyatt Regency Savannah, as sunlight flooded the windows overlooking the Savannah River. The brunch menu included a chef-prepared omelet station as well as rum raisin French toast casserole, fried green tomatoes, catfish biscuit sliders, granolayogurt parfaits and gourmet mac ‘n’ cheese. In a nod to the couple’s favorite frozen treats, guests sampled King of Pops popsicles in a wide variety of flavors, in addition to a traditional five-tier wedding cake studded with magnolia leaves—two sweet endings to a perfect day.

Amber & Travis Season: Late summer Guests: 48 Ceremony and reception: 10 Downing at Churchill’s Pub

A VINTAGE AFFAIR After searching the world high and low for a charming wedding locale, Savannah fit the bill for one Seattle couple.

WHEN SEATTLEITES AMBER PERSONS AND TRAVIS GREER got engaged, they knew they wanted a destination wedding. “I have been to and been in a lot of weddings and I really enjoyed the destination ones because you end up spending more time with the bride and groom,” Amber explains. The only trouble was, the couple couldn’t decide just where to have theirs. They searched the globe. Africa, where the bride grew up (her parents are missionaries), was one option. They also considered Ireland, where the groom had lived for a time. Mexico, the Caribbean and even Iceland were also on their list before they settled on Savannah. “It kept coming up in all of these lists of top 10 places to visit in the U.S.,” Amber says. Though they had never been to Savannah, the sense of history really spoke to the couple, who share a love of all things vintage. They also felt the city checked a lot of boxes when it came to what their guests, both adults and children, would be looking for. “It’s so beautiful, I felt that people could really just enjoy the ambience of it regardless of their age,” she says. Even if their wedding couldn’t be in Africa, the bride wanted to bring in touches of home for the couple’s big day at 10 Downing at Churchill's Gastro Pub. To that end, a friend made ties for the guys with fabric from the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), and the bride’s mother sewed table runners from African fabric. Indeed, it was a very DIY affair: Amber designed and made her own veil, while Travis’ mom created the bride’s delicate bouquet and table arrangements with baby’s breath.

Amber's Watters' Wtoo "Pippin" dress was purchased at La Belle Elaine’s in Seattle. It was the bride’s idea to add the shoulder sashes. At first the seamstress balked, but in the end even she admitted they looked fantastic.

Because Travis works for a music licensing company and is a composer himself, designing their own playlist was a given—Travis even wrote an original song for the processional. The bride’s father, a pastor, officiated the ceremony, and a friend of the couple’s opened the service with a welcome, which allowed Amber’s father to walk her down the aisle. Afterward, the couple wanted to make sure the reception was casual and fun. “We told everyone, ‘It’s going to be hot so bring shorts for dancing’,” Amber says. Good thing because the whole gang got out on the floor—replete with a conga line. Amber and Travis couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out. “It was so meaningful that people gave up their time and money and energy to come and celebrate with us,” she says. “It was a very emotional week—and everybody had the best time.”

Amber made her own 1920s-inspired veil. She took a class, in which the instructor was a little worried when she learned about Amber’s ambitious design. But the result was, clearly, a success.

The day before the wedding, the bride found a short dress with silver details at Copper Penny near the Marshall House, where they were staying. Amber and Travis changed into their reception outfits for the serious dancing: the short dress for her and shorts and white Converse sneakers for him. To add a little glamour and to bring in a little bit of her childhood home, Amber spray-painted plastic lions, giraffes, elephants and other African animals in gold for the table settings. After the party, the bride gave them to her guests as favors.

Andretta & Derrick Season: Late summer Guests: 175 Ceremony: Forsyth Park Reception: Jepson Center for the Arts

ART OF

ATTRACTION All of the pieces come together for a bold and bright destination wedding where the city’s iconic landmarks set the stage.

“ART IS THE ACCOMPLICE OF LOVE,” wrote French poet Rémy de Gourmont. And few couples have employed art more charmingly than Andretta and Derrick Williams did at their wedding last September. The Houston couple chose Savannah as their wedding destination partly to make it easy for family members—hers in Florida and his in South Carolina—to attend. “I had dreamed of a destination wedding with beautiful scenery,”

says Andretta, “and Derrick wanted something incredible for our families.” Savannah offered it all. Once they picked the city, Andretta enlisted her sister Princess Walls, a Virginia-based wedding planner, to help create the event. After mere minutes of online searching, they settled on Forsyth Park. “I immediately said, ‘This is it!’” Andretta recalls. “I fell in love with the setting. It’s elegant without being stuffy, and you can’t beat the view.”

Lots of love, adept local vendors and incredible luck helped Derrick and Andretta’s wedding come together almost magically. Even tropical storm Hermine helped them out, striking two days before their ceremony, which left just enough time for the skies to clear and for city crews to clean up their Forsyth Park setting.

Finding a reception site was a little more challenging. Expecting about 175 guests and “not a big fan of banquet halls,” Andretta says, they set off on another serendipitous photo search which eventually led them to the stairwell at the Jepson Center. Classically beautiful and somewhat formal, but also bright and airy, the locale appeared to be perfection. When they learned the Jepson could accommodate all of their guests, they sealed the deal. Choosing a color scheme was easy, starting with teal (Andretta’s favorite) and then selecting a tint across the color wheel, peachy-pink, as an accent. The bride describes the combination as “Southern without being too pastel.” The fact that the word “peach” is also associated with Georgia added a sweet twist, inspiring an urn of iced peach tea at the outdoor ceremony and fresh peaches as part of the reception table décor. The couple opted for an electronics-free ceremony, sans videographer and even cell phone photos. Although it took her a while to warm up to the idea, now Andretta is grateful. “I’m so glad we did it that way,” she says. “We wanted to be in the moment, and we wanted our guests to feel that way, too.” An Instagram post inspired Andretta to seek a local artist to paint a wedding portrait at the reception, and a Google search turned up Savannah portraitist Maggie Smith Kuhn. Stationed on the grand staircase landing, she painted an image of the couple’s first dance as reception guests looked on. The keepsake now hangs in the newlyweds’ living room.

Peaches in mercury-glass compote dishes adorned every table, accenting the event’s teal-andpeach pallette and helping guests stay energized for dancing long after dinner. “Every peach was eaten by the end of the evening,” Andretta laughs. At the reception, guests signed wooden puzzle pieces that were later assembled and framed to hang in the Williams home. “I love working puzzles to pass the time,” says Andretta, who discovered the puzzle on Etsy. “This seemed like the perfect way to show how our families and friends came together.”

Megan & Vitaly Season: Spring Guests: 60 Ceremony: Gingerbread House/ Foxy Loxy Courtyard Reception: Gingerbread House

FULL STEAM AHEAD Two active-duty Navy sailors blend vintage and contemporary details in a fun-filled destination wedding.

Written by Allison Hersh | Photography by Greg Ceo

WHEN U.S. NAVY SAILORS MEGAN MOORE AND VITALY PACEJ decided to host a destination wedding in Savannah, they knew they would need a little help from their friends. Throughout the planning process, Megan was deployed in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Syria. She turned to her maid of honor and her family to help make their big day a reality. Megan, a boatswain’s mate, and Vitaly, an engineer, met in Jacksonville, Florida (she is originally from Oklahoma, he from New Jersey). They vacationed in Georgia’s Hostess City several times over the years and fell

in love with Savannah’s warm Southern charm and rich history. Although the couple has traveled the world with the military, they wanted their wedding to provide a strong sense of place for family and friends to gather. “My biggest goal was to have all the people we care about witness us saying, ‘I do,’” Megan explains. “We wanted them to hear our vows and our story and to know that love is not always easy, especially when we spend so much time apart. Nothing really mattered to me on our wedding day but Vitaly. That’s all I could think about: I was marrying my best friend.”

Attracted to vintage style, Megan wanted to create a fun and welcoming atmosphere that would blend traditional details—like pearls, lace, crystal and gold—with more contemporary accents. On their wedding day, the bride’s elegant ivory gown she found in Greece during her deployment, worked in a cut meant to display her colorful butterfly, rose and mermaid tattoos. “I have matching tattoos with both my maid of honor and my husband,” says the bride. “They really represent who I am and tell a story, showing different periods of my life that I’m very proud of.” Throughout the big day, Megan says she made sure to focus on her love for Vitaly and not to sweat the small stuff. “It didn’t matter to me that we had to start the wedding an hour late because almost everyone was stuck in traffic, or the wrong song accidently played when we were leaving,” she laughs. “I wanted to live in the moment with my husband.”

Megan and Vitaly met through mutual friends in the U.S. Navy while stationed in Jacksonville, Florida. They immediately felt a connection and remained close, even when physically separated due to their military deployments. The Victorian splendor of Savannah’s Gingerbread House, circa 1899, is one of the finest examples of Steamboat Gothic architecture in America. “I loved the romantic and vintage feel,” the bride says. “It was the perfect size for the wedding, and our planner was able to add her touch to it.” During a port visit in Greece, Megan scheduled an appointment at a bridal boutique specializing in handmade and designer wedding gowns. “They were able to fit me in for an hour to try on dresses,” she recalls. “I had planned to only get an idea of what type of dress I wanted. Then I put on ‘the dress,’ and I knew it was the one. I bought it and stored it in a safe for two months onboard my ship.”

TAKEAWAY ADVICE:

“Don’t stress about the big day! Not everything is going to go as planned,” says Megan. “Just relax and enjoy every minute you have because the only thing that matters is the moments you had, not if something didn’t turn out exactly the way you wanted it.”

Megan and Vitaly provided a photo booth with fun props to add a touch of whimsy and spontaneity. The couple decided to have two wildly different cakes at their wedding: a traditional multi-tiered confection with gold accents (top right) and a fishing-themed chocolate one as a fun-loving tribute to Vitaly.

ever after

SOMETHING BLUE In the lush countryside of Lancashire, England, five simple words created a wedding tradition that, more than 100 years later, continues to dictate the wish lists of altar-bound brides. Unlike the old, new and borrowed, the “something blue” lends itself to the inspired and the innovative. Enter the vibrancy of Southern hydrangeas, Scottish thistles and Dutch delphiniums not in a bouquet, but on top of a single-tier cake, where the good luck of nature’s boldest—and rarest—color stunningly completes the nuptial verse. —Maggie Harney Cake by Madeline Bunn, Cake and Bunn Photography by Teresa Earnest
