We invite you to experience our 24th edition of the Savannah Music Festival (SMF), an annual 17-day celebration of musical arts in one of America’s most beautiful cities. It is here that we stage musical productions throughout the days and evenings in the downtown historic district, allowing you to walk from one concert to the next through gorgeous squares under the canopies of live oaks amidst Savannah’s fabulous springtime weather.

At SMF, we live for live music, and the exchange between artists and audiences that comes whether it’s a 400-year old masterpiece or the world premiere of a commissioned work. Our annual collection always includes bluegrass, jazz, blues, popular and contemporary “Americana” styles, along with original programs by some of the world’s leading classical musicians performing styles from every era. We are particularly excited about the new outdoor venue at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, one of our community’s great little jewels, where we will stage dance parties for fans of Cajun, Salsa and Zydeco dancing.

This year’s original classical music programs range from modern dance and recitals to chamber music and symphonic concerts, replete with several premieres. We are elated to present the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, whose intense collaborative method of creation includes choreography set to Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet for Strings and Franz Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” Quartet. With the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, we have co-commissioned a new piano concerto from Marcus Roberts conducted by maestro Robert Spano. Associate Artistic Director Daniel Hope once again brings an exemplary group of friends and colleagues, including renowned mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, to perform a wealth of chamber music masterworks as well as premieres of new works by composers Charlotte Bray and Alexandra du Bois. Savannah native Joseph Conyers, Assistant Principal Bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra, makes his SMF debut in several programs.

Jazz fans will not want to miss Savannah debuts by Ahmad Jamal, René Marie, Charles McPherson or Jane Monheit, while greats such as Houston Person, Joe Temperley, Martin Taylor, Julian Lage and Lionel Loueke return for special performances, including the premiere of a commissioned work by Walter Blanding. Our annual Swing Central Jazz Finale will feature an unprecedented “Saxophone Summit,” showcasing a range of the finest saxophonists in our time, while cabaret fans should flock to see one of the art form’s brightest talents, Jennifer Sheehan, in her critically acclaimed show “You Made Me Love You: Celebrating 100 Years of the American Songbook.”

As always, a healthy mix of eclectic American artists is part of SMF 2013, and will showcase the talents of Emmylou Harris, David Grisman, Jerry Douglas, Tab Benoit, Keller Williams and the Travelin’ McCourys, The Red Stick Ramblers, Sarah Jarosz, Charles Bradley, J.D. Crowe, Mike Marshall, Lee Fields, Cedric Watson & Dirk Powell, Otis Taylor, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, and up-and-comers Joy Kills Sorrow, Lake Street Dive and many others. Our Acoustic Music Seminar returns under the direction of Mike Marshall, in which we will create a bridge between talented young musicians and masters of the acoustic music idiom such as Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky, Rushad Eggleston and Julian Lage through a weeklong educational intensive. Plus you can always experience extraordinary international artists, including concerts in 2013 by fado singer Ana Moura, Malian guitarist Boubacar Traoré, Chinese cellist Li-Wei Qin and British songwriter and rock guitarist Richard Thompson.

Della Mae (above) is an accomplished young bluegrass group who has shared stages with Willie Nelson, Del McCoury, Laurie Lewis and Leon Russell. Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Celia Woodsmith and two-time National Fiddle Champion Kimber Ludiker join Jenni Lynn Gardner on mandolin/vocals, Courtney Hartman on lead guitar/vocals and Amanda Kowalski on bass. A powerhouse all-female bluegrass band with classical training, they show off their considerable technical talent through Texas style fiddling and vocal abilities beyond their years, playing instruments with a finesse and vivacity to match.

Returning to Savannah after a four year hiatus, North Carolina’s Steep Canyon Rangers (page 6, top left) are proof that traditional bluegrass music can adapt to its times without losing its history. In just ten years, this 5-piece band

has graduated from stairwell jams at UNC to America’s greatest stages, including the Grand Ole Opry and an album and national tour with actor/comedian/banjo player Steve Martin.

SMF's annual Zydeco Dance Party changes venues in 2013 to the beautiful new Ships of the Sea North Garden. Accordion and rubboard drive this distinctive Creole music from southwest Louisiana, presented by one of Zydeco’s rising stars, Lil Wayne and his band Same Ol ’ 2 Step.

Dancers take note: because of increased capacity in the North Garden, this year’s SMF dance parties host two shows each night rather than three, adding 25 minutes to the length of each set for a complete length of 85 minutes, so pace yourselves.

Traveling from Mali for an exclusive 2013 U.S. appearance, African guitar master Boubacar Traoré (page 8, top left) is one of West Africa’s most revered musicians. The historic link of American blues to the music of Mali is evident in Mr. Traoré and his trio, which is both ancient and modern.

Acclaimed multi-instrumentalists from Louisiana, Cedric Watson and Dirk Powell (top right) lead a band that explores the West African influences of Creole and Cajun music. Dirk Powell has worked with Loretta Lynn, Levon Helm, Sting, T-Bone Burnett and Tim O’Brien, founded Balfa Toujours with his wife Christine Balfa and is currently the Artistic Director of the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. Cedric Watson captivated Zydeco fans at SMF in 2010 with his band Bijou Creole, and moves with ease between fiddle and accordion. This incredible double bill features two original ensembles led by two of the most distinct saxophone voices of our era. Charles McPherson (bottom) began his career with Barry Harris and Charles Mingus before leading his own groups and making dozens of recordings as a leader. He was the featured alto saxophonist in the Clint Eastwood film "Bird," the story of Charlie Parker. At 73, he is playing at the height of his powers, combining passionate feeling while never sacrificing the fluidity of his melody making.

Commissioned by SMF, the world premiere of "Tick Tock" by composer and saxophonist Walter Blanding brings together an all-star cast of musicians. As a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Quintet for nearly 20 years, Mr. Blanding has traveled the globe and absorbed a wealth of musical influences that come through in his original compositional style, written especially for this septet. About the world premiere “Messina: Songs of the night” When composer/arranger Robert Sadin first heard Patrick Messina (top left) perform at SMF 2011, he immediately began thinking of the magical province of Messina, Sicily, the namesake of this program’s great clarinetist, Patrick Messina. This region has been a central artery in the intersection of the world’s cultures. From the Moors to the Vikings, to the Romans, Sicily has been drenched in the richness of human character and culture. in Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. With the revival of the classical tradition, Italy had rediscovered the “old” world and started the cultural transition in Europe from medieval to modern. Continuing and complementing the process, Portugal’s voyages of discovery shattered the old European boundaries and opened up a “new” world. Culture did not simply flow one way out of Renaissance Italy, indeed there was a cultural interplay between Portugal and Italy, between “old” and “new,” in which both parties made contributions valued by the other. In o ur ever-shrinking world, these connections are stronger than ever, as this program makes clear.

Mozart Piano Trio in B-flat Major, K. 502 Zwilich Septet for Piano Trio and String Quartet Mendelssohn Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20 This “all in the family” production features one of the most acclaimed piano trios in our time, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson (KLR) Trio (top right), joining forces with the Miami String Quartet (MSQ). SMF favorites Benny Kim and Keith Robinson are the first violinist and cellist of the MSQ, and Mr. Robinson's sister Sharon Robinson, is the cellist for the KLR Trio. Together they will perform Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Septet for Piano Trio and String Quartet, a work that was cocommissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Detroit in 2009 for these two ensembles.

Schubert Octet in F Major, D. 803 Beethoven Septet in E-flat Major, Op. 20 Franz Schubert penned the D.803 Octet in F Major in 1824, modelling it after the immensely popular Septet, Op. 20 of Beethoven. It has the same number of movements (six), though Schubert's Octet adds a second violin as the eighth instrument. This final program in the Daniel Hope & Friends series adjoins these two immensely powerful works, serving as the exclamation point to Mr. Hope’s extraordinary 2013 series.

Twelve of the country’s finest high school jazz bands go head-to-head in SMF’s prestigious Swing Central Jazz. In this unique workshop and competition led by pianist/composer/educator Marcus Roberts, more than 300 high school students and teachers spend three days immersed in the world of swing and big band jazz. Based on a collective approach to instruction that mimics ensemble playing, students receive instruction from, directly interact with and perform alongside jazz musicians such as Wycliffe Gordon, Marcus Printup and Jason Marsalis. Prizes are awarded to the top three finalists at the finale on March 29 at the Lucas Theatre. SMF’s Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS) is a groundbreaking mentorship program for young musicians, involving five days of hands-on instruction for 16 of the most promising and talented young string players in America. Led by acclaimed mandolin player Mike Marshall (bottom left), this year’s students will learn from world-class musicians and artists such as Julian Lage, David Grisman, Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky, Jerry Douglas and Rushad Eggleston. After a week of master classes, workshops and jam sessions, AMS culminates in a sensational stringband showcase for festival audiences. “ AMS is an amazing opportunity for our clinicians to connect with young musicians who might remind them of themselves 25-35 years ago, giving them each a chance to impart practical professional knowledge. Since 2008, the Charles H. Morris Center in Trustees Garden has been SMF's premiere club-style venue. With flexible seating to accommodate dance parties, concerts and cabaret, this space also boasts on-site parking, beer, wine and beverage service and adjoining areas suitable for pre- and post-concert corporate/private rentals.

On the east side of Johnson Square is Christ Church Episcopal, often referred to as the Mother Church of Georgia. It was the first church in historic Savannah, and boasts an exceptional acoustic for vocal, organ and chamber music.

The Johnny Mercer Theatre at the Savannah Civic Center holds just over 2,500 patrons, making it SMF’s home for popular touring acts. Over the years, we have produced shows there with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Wilco, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, The Avett Brothers and Band of Horses, among many others. Beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages are served in the lobby.

Temple Mickve Israel 20 East Gordon Street

Renovated and reopened in December of 2000, the Lucas Theatre is one of SMF’s primary performance halls with seating for 1,165 patrons and concessions in the lobby (including beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages). The stage lends itself to many of the performing arts, including dance, orchestral music and jazz, country and pop concerts.

New this year, the North Garden will be the home of concerts and dance parties on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. With a capacity of nearly 450, this new indoor/outdoor space will be the perfect setting for many productions. Limited parking, beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages are available at this venue, as is an adjoining area for pre- and postconcert corporate/private rentals.

Located on Monterey Square, Temple Mickve Israel opened in 1878 as a home for Georgia’s oldest synagogue. The Gothic Revival building seats 300 people, and will host an opening night performance in 2013 featuring acclaimed mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter.

Located on Telfair Square, the Trinity United Methodist Church is one of SMF’s primary venues for classical music. With a wonderful acoustic, plentiful sight lines and a simple, elegant interior, this historic place of worship opened its doors in 1850.

SCAD’s Trustees Theater is one of SMF’s primary performance halls, seating nearly 1,100 patrons. Non-alcoholic beverages and snacks can be purchased in the lobby. The Savannah Box Office, located outside of the Trustees Theater, acts as the primary box office for SMF ticket purchases, and is open Monday–Friday from 10 am–5 pm.
