We are delighted to present the 25th edition of the Savannah Music Festival (SMF). During the past quarter century, the growth of our organization has gone hand in glove with the advancement of our city, and SMF is now Georgia’s largest musical arts event and one of the most distinctive cross-genre music festivals in the world. While stimulating arts education and fostering economic development carry equal weight in our organization’s core mission, it is the clear and unfiltered exchange between hungry audiences and willing artists that continues to fuel us. We live for live music! This year’s 17-day feast of musical arts is our most ambitious undertaking to date. As always, from morning until late night we stage musical productions throughout the historic district, allowing patrons the opportunity to travel by foot, bicycle or pedicab from one event to the next while relishing our springtime weather. Each year, I meet hundreds of festival attendees who travel from all over the country specifically to experience our eclectic mix of indigenous American musical styles. Whether it’s bluegrass, blues, country, gospel, jazz or the many emerging blends of Americana music, SMF features a wealth of it. Country music star Vince Gill, blues giant Robert Cray, bluegrass icon Ricky Skaggs, and dozens of Americana music masters such as Béla Fleck, Tim O’Brien, Darrell Scott, Taj Mahal and Mike Marshall (director of our Acoustic Music Seminar) represent the established guard this year, while the contemporary

sound of Americana is covered by the Punch Brothers, Aoife O’Donovan, The Lone Bellow, Noam Pikelny, Becca Stevens, Chris Eldridge and Julian Lage. A very special SMF production, “Ladies Sing the Blues,” features outstanding female singers channeling Ethel Waters, Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. Major jazz programs include: a fourshow run by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in the intimate confines of the Charles H. Morris Center; an afternoon matinée featuring jazz master Branford Marsalis; a “Piano Showdown” with veterans Marcus Roberts and Cyrus Chestnut squaring off with twenty-something wunderkinds Aaron Diehl and Christian Sands; a swinging double Savannah debut of jazz singer Cécile McLorin Salvant and the Christian McBride Trio; and a concert devoted to the classic collaborations of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley. Daniel Hope, who occupies the Mr. and Mrs. Curtis G. Anderson Associate Artistic Director Chair, is now in his 11th season of crafting one-time only chamber music performances that continue to bring this series a wealth of international acclaim. Daniel invites new friends for each festival and this year acclaimed tenor Michael Schade will be featured in two programs. There will also be three unique chamber orchestra productions: one conducted by Daniel Hope, one by Simon Crawford-Phillips, and another by Philip Dukes. The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, co-led by longtime SMF favorites David Finckel and Wu Han, will premiere a program that will

also travel to their own series in New York City. Daniel will be the soloist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, who make their 9th consecutive SMF appearance, under the direction of Robert Spano. We are also thrilled to present debuts by mezzo-soprano Tara Erraught, pianist Benjamin Hochman, mandolinist Avi Avital and the Jerusalem Quartet. Participating international artists will come from Scotland, France, Israel, Germany, Mali, Austria, Pakistan, Ireland, Niger, England and Spain. We are delighted to collaborate with the Flamenco Festival International in Madrid in presenting two of the most renowned Spanish artists of our time—Estrella Morente and Tomatito—and their respective ensembles. We have also conceived a project connecting two distinct musical styles titled “Flamenco Meets Jazz” that pairs virtuoso Spanish guitarist Dani de Morón with the sensational Aaron Diehl Trio, which will play here before traveling to the International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada. Qawwali singing, Irish and Scottish music, as well as two of West Africa’s most renowned contemporary artists will all be on display. We invite you to join us throughout our 25th anniversary celebration. XVI:49 Mozart Sonata in A Major K. 331 (“Alla Turca”) Schubert Four Impromptus, D. 935 (Op. posth. 142) Pianist and Hamburg, Germany native Sebastian Knauer (top left) is a mainstay of SMF chamber music programs. His nuanced approach to all piano music, whether it be Mendelssohn, Mozart, Copland or Gershwin, has made Mr. Knauer a favorite of music lovers throughout North America and Europe. A prize winner at numerous competitions, he gave his concerto debut at the age of 13, performing Haydn’s D Major Piano Concerto in the Hamburg Musikhalle. Since then, Mr. Knauer has performed in major concert halls throughout the world with leading orchestras and conductors. This opening day recital is a program celebrating masterworks of the first Viennese school.

FLAMENCO MEETS JAZZ: DANI DE MORÓN/ AARON DIEHL In partnership with Flamenco Festival (see page 9 for more information), SMF fostered this creative collaboration blending two extraordinary instrumentalists and two beloved musical traditions of Spain and the U.S. Dani de Morón (top right) is one of the rising stars of flamenco guitar and he, along with a Spanish percussionist, will join jazz pianist Aaron Diehl and his trio in this original SMF production. Only 27, Mr. Diehl has blown away Savannah audiences in every setting in which he has played—solo, duo, quartet and in large ensembles—and this original program promises to be imaginative and dynamic.

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen them at Preservation Hall in New Orleans, you know just how special it is to experience this marvelously swinging band in a small space. Making their debut in the wonderfully intimate Charles H. Morris Center, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band will ignite this room in a two-night residency, showcasing the classic American sound that was created in the Crescent City 100 years ago. The band (Charlie Gabriel, clarinet; Freddie Lonzo, trombone; Ben Jaffe, bass & tuba; Rickie Monie, piano; Joseph Lastie, Jr., drums; and Clint Maedgen, saxophones) has traveled worldwide spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate classic New Orleans Jazz. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Bonnaroo, for British royalty or with the Del McCoury Band, this music embodies a joyful, timeless spirit. This double bill pairs two very different and talented Brooklynbased ensembles that blend folk, rock and country, with roots ranging from the South to the other side of the Atlantic. Aoife O’Donovan (top) returns to Savannah as a leader, following her SMF performance with Crooked Still in 2011. She has collaborated with artists as wide ranging as Alison Krauss and Dave Douglas, and is fresh off a yearlong recording/touring project with Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma and Stuart Duncan. A widely celebrated group that came together at a Park Slope diner over the songs of front man Zach Williams, The Lone Bellow (left) have made a huge impression with their beautiful harmonies, emotional force and a presence that sounds remarkably experienced. This is the first of two nights featuring Aoife O’Donovan and The Lone Bellow at Ships of the Sea North Garden.

TOMATITO “SOY FLAMENCO” The fervent Spanish tradition of flamenco music is championed by multiple GRAMMY Awardwinning guitarist Tomatito (José Fernández Torres), who brings his esteemed ensemble to Savannah for opening night of the 25th anniversary festival. A soloist of endless capability and major significance in the style, Tomatito has collaborated with a wide range of artists including John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia, Camarón de la Isla (with whom he worked for 18 years), Chick Corea and many others in music, film and theater. Those who experienced the sonic delight of Paco de Lucia’s closing night performance at SMF 2012 can expect similar musical heights from his friend and colleague Tomatito, who the Miami Herald calls “one of Spain’s greatest guitarists.” This is the first night of world-renowned flamenco, including virtuosic dance and soulful vocals, at SMF 2014.

A presenting organization based in Madrid, Flamenco Festival is dedicated to the promotion of world-class flamenco artists outside of Spain. Their annual events in London, Moscow, NYC and Tokyo showcase icons of traditional flamenco along with the most innovative, emerging young stars of flamenco dance, music and song. THE AVETT BROTHERS In 2001, banjoist Scott Avett and guitarist Seth Avett formed The Avett Brothers (top right) with standup bass player Bob Crawford. Growing up in Concord, NC, the boys immersed themselves in their musician dad’s record collection, falling in love with Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Crosby, Stills & Nash. There are few tenors in the history of bluegrass music whose abilities and oeuvre can be compared to those of Ricky Skaggs, who by age 21 was already a “recognized master” of one of America’s most demanding art forms. Simon produced recordings by The Band, Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel and Blood Sweat & Tears. He is also a unique songwriter. Born in Harlem in the early 40s, blues musician Taj Mahal (top left) is the child of a gospel singing schoolteacher from South Carolina and a Caribbean-American jazz pianist. Throughout Taj Mahal’s career, his heritage and Harlem upbringing have influenced his unique take on the blues. The 72-year-old GRAMMY-winning guitarist/singer makes his highly anticipated SMF debut.

As tough as it might be to categorize the music created by Casey Driessen (below) and his magic fiddle, it’s welcoming and familiar while sounding like nothing you’ve ever heard before. You might call him the heir to Vassar Clements in that he straddles the line between roots and jazz. But if you’ve ever seen Driessen perform solo, you’ve experienced his limitless energy and spontaneity, as he mixes his signature percussive fiddle style with digital loops and effects,

Representing the Scots are Lau, who will share a double bill with a quartet of Irish players assembled for this occasion. Two members from the Irish supergroup Lúnasa, flute player Kevin Crawford (below right) and Uilleann piper/low whistle player Cillian Vallely (below left), will join renowned Irish guitarist John Doyle, one of the genre’s leading guitar players. These three are joined by fiddle player Duncan Wickel, a participant in SMF’s 2012 Acoustic Music Seminar who is now sought after for his proficiency with an array of musical styles including Irish tunes, jigs and reels.

TIM O’BRIEN & DARRELL SCOTT Two of the most revered musicians in Americana music, Darrell Scott (below left) and Tim O’Brien (below right) met 15 years ago when they began playing, recording and touring together. Their new recording comprises five originals by each of them, along with a pair of classics from Hank Williams and George Jones and a spirited rendition of the John Prine classic, “Paradise.” Says Scott, “Our strength is playing in the moment, so if you record with us across from each other, leaking

CLOSING NIGHT DANCE PARTY: RED BARAAT A party band whose live energy is hard to match, Red Baraat (top) is a brassy big band, whose classic funk and bhangra blend is nearly impossible to resist. Brass band instrumentation, which made its way into India on the trail of British colonialism, is an important part of Northern Indian culture, and contributes to the traditional wedding celebration. They play during the baraat, the ceremony in which the groom travels to the bride’s house, accompanied by his family, in one big, colorful, noisy procession. Thus, the joyful, celebratory nature of Red Baraat’s music is well-rooted in tradition. Red Baraat however, has a distinctly North American sound, with an attitude that brings to mind New Orleans’ finest brass and funk bands, and an urban aesthetic that is club-ready and far from folkloric. This will be a great way to close out SMF 2014!

Recently renovated, SCAD’s Trustees Theater is one of SMF’s primary performance halls, seating over 1,100 patrons. Non-alcoholic beverages and snacks can be purchased in the lobby. The Savannah Box Office, located outside of the Trustees Theater, acts as the primary box office for SMF ticket purchases, and is open Monday–Friday from 10 am–5 pm.
