I DEATION The process of ideation was one of the most exciting steps in the creation of Ovonto. I began by researching the creators of the brand and the product it was creating. One thing that captivated me about OVO was the minimalist aesthetic and the grass roots feeling I got from the website. I felt like I had stumbled upon something that felt exclusive while being the voice of a generation of hip hop fans.

C R EATION In the creation of this typeface, I wanted to give the viewer a feeling associated with the brand. The feeling of emotionless simplicity. I started every letter off with one of 2 basic shapes: a rectangle and a circle. From there the dimensions could be tweaked to make it optically sound.

PE R FECTI O N After the basic forms were nailed down, they had to be cleaned up to give a unified look. I examined every stroke width and angle to make sure the letters looked legible and neat inside of words and at different scales.

E LI M I NATI O N One important part of refining the shape of the letters was eliminating sharp edges and curves that didn’t fit with the concept of simplicity. Sometimes, even is the letter was mathematically shaped right, it looked too busy. Elements such as the counter on the majuscule G had to be thinned out to make the letter appear cleaner as a whole.

PROBLE M S When creating a typeface that is meant to look streamlined and clean, any curves that aren’t executed properly, can become a problem. The lowercase y was especially difficult to perfect. Too much of a curl on the tail, and the letter appears too effeminate. When making adjustments, it was like I was walking a fine line between illegible and too characterized. I solved this through slightly changing the degree of the curve while keeping the stroke width the same.

EXAM PLES The final step in creating the typeface was placing it on display. Here are some posters and online shopping tools that are one of the main outlets of income for the brand. Ovonto gives the website and merchandise a newer, more crisp look. The degree of sophistication is taken to a new level which translates the brand’s exclusive identity to the buyer more clearly.
