DRR IN
Cuba Hurricanes are endemic to Cuba’s history. The island’s location between the US Gulf Coast and Windward Islands puts it in the path of devastating and frequent hurricane strikes.
Save the Children’s Presence in Cuba Over the past 2 years in Cuba Save the Children has implemented 2 programs with over EUR300,000 from DIPECHO. Collectively the programs have reached over 16,600 children directly. In addition, we reached over 176,000 beneficiaries directly and indirectly.
Preparedness activities The ‘Community based and institutional preparedness to drought and hurricanes in Las Tunas Province’ project built local capacity for emergency preparedness and response through disaster preparedness awareness campaigns, rehabilitation, equipment and training in risk reduction and

mapping. School brigades for preparedness and response to emergencies (BEPRE) developed EWS and led the EWS alert, evacuation procedures and routes at school. The ‘Child Participation’ program focused on emergency preparedness and environmental education for children. Through a child participation focus, the Cuba program succeeded in engaging key government entities at one end of the spectrum while developing sustainable youth leadership in risk management and disaster response at the grass roots. The project developed participatory methodologies for environmental education for children, including disabled children. It resulted in the creation of spaces for dialogue between children and political powers, environmental groups and other influential individuals.
